The last day of summer was quickly approaching. Not to be confused with the day preceding the first day of fall, the last day of summer was the last day before school started up again. It was the last day for freedom, the last day for adventure, the last day for fun.

Ellenore Blackwall was currently out past curfew-- another thing she would not be able to do for the foreseeable future once school started back up again. If she wanted to sneak out and enjoy late night exploration for any longer, now was the time to do seize the moment. Now was the time to be free.

A blip on her phone screen caught her attention as she crossed through the park not far from her home, an orb or two showing up at the far edges of her Ghost Radar app. At one point rumor had gone around that someone had died at the playground and that's where she was headed. Unfortunately, that meant ignoring the orbs, for now and continuing onward, watching the app intently while running her thumb over the agate pendant she hadn't taken off since she'd given a matching one to Bea.

When she reached the playground she took a seat on one of the swings, heels digging in to the wood chips as she gave herself a nudge to start moving. She wasn't sure what she was hoping for, exactly, other than maybe convincing whatever stray spirits that there were around that she was mostly harmless and definitely worth approaching.

Lounging around the infant swingset of the darkened playground sprawled an individual who had little regard as to when children returned to school.

In fact, he had little regard for children at all, save for the tiny ones who carried lunchboxes and didn't seem to know any better than to feed some of their animal crackers and baloney sandwiches to the overgrown cat that approached them - and those tiny tykes tended to come around the playground year 'round with their mommies and nannies.

But, as the night had dragged on, the small kidlings had long since been tucked into bed, leaving the large Maine Coon to his own devices, namely, swinging himself on the baby swing as he stared at nothing in particular, paws and tail tucked in securely to the device.

A prickle down his spine and a rustle in the distance notified him of a peculiar visitor, but the colorful woman who approached the adult swing set yards away hadn't seemed to take notice of his presence.

Yet.

For the sake of acknowledging the strange girl, the orange Mau let out a loud yowl...mostly because he figured it'd be funny as hell to startle her.

A red orb appeared on the edge of the phone screen and she stopped swinging, the chains making one last drawn out squeaaaak as she slowed. Her eyes widened as she watched the orb drift in her general direction and.... Yooooowwwwllll.

Seance scrambled to her feet, tripping over the edge of one of her own clunky boots and tumbling down to the ground. Her heart felt like it was going to leap out of her chest, pounding so loudly that she could hear it thundering in her ears. Her phone had flown from her hands during her fall and somewhere in the dirt ahead of her the orb blipped and then disappeared into nothing.

She couldn't see the screen, though. She wouldn't know that.

The teen pushed herself up slowly, trying not to make a face as the wood chips scratched at her palms, clinging to the knit of her loose sweater. She groaned as she tried to pick some of the debris off while glancing around. "H-hello? Who's there?" Her voice was shaky and uncertain, lacking all of that bravado she generally managed to muster when she was talking to spirits in front of an audience. It was different when Bea was there, or Seb. Her friends gave her confidence; they gave her a reason to be brave.

Thinking of them she straightened out a bit, still sitting on the ground but attempting to be more observant. "S-show yourself! I-I'm not afraid."

Holy crap, this was even better than he'd imagined.

As he watched the girl tumble and scramble around, Bob let out a long, loud laugh. He couldn't help it - she looked like a newborn calf attempting to walk, or a drunkard trying to find their Uber lift home. She was a mess. Yes, he'd been the cause of it, but that's what she got for roaming around a playground when it was dark outside!

The prickle stabbed at his spine again, an annoying little reminder that this human wasn't just a simple human. Go figure that he'd stumble across another one - did these guys multiply like flies or what?

Hopping down from his baby swing, the large Mauvian stretched out his legs, tail whipping back behind him as he sauntered his way over to the panicked teenager. He didn't hide the fact that he was talking - nah - there wasn't a point if he was about to change her life anyways.

Man, for a cat who tried to avoid work, work certainly seemed to find its way to him.

"Hey, kid. It's just me, relax."

Creeaaaaak. The swing's chain, in need of some weatherproofing and probably a bit of grease, squeaked as the swing continued to rock back and forth even after the feline hopped down. The noise was eerie and everything about the way the massive cat stalked towards her was more than a little foreboding.

Seance took another awkward step backwards, nearly stumbling over her own feed again only to actually trip over the wooden frame surrounding the playground. Intended to keep the wood chips in, she was certain it would do no such thing when it came to talking cats-- demons, ghosts, spirits -- she had no salt. She'd come all this way to track spirits on her stupid phone and she hadn't even thought to bring salt.

The girl let out a startled noise as her backside hit the ground, landing herself in a heap on the dew-damp grass. Her mind scrambled and raced in an attempt to figure out what she should do next. What would Seb do? What would Bea do?

Seb would start recording.

Bea? Bea would....

Sea shifted her grip on her phone, unlocking it quickly with the swipe of her thumb and pulling up her contacts. "Relax? I don't think so." She aimed her phone at the feline coming her way, snapping a photo with full flash, forwarding it on to her best friend.

The bright flash made him pause, his sensitive green eyes wincing until they closed. Bob shook his head, white spots now distracting him as he hissed under his breath.

"Hey - really? If I took a picture of you without permission, you'd throw a fit. What makes it okay for you to take one of me without asking??"

When emerald eyes opened back up, they were glaring. He was close to turning tail and saying screw it, but if the pipsqueak had taken his picture, god only knew if she'd managed to get a recording of him talking as well. And that - that wouldn't do. He didn't need the Negaverse breathing down his neck any more than they already were!

"Delete that crap." He huffed, resuming his path towards her, "Don't be rude."

----------

She was on her way home from Baskin Robbins, a bag with a pint of chocolate chip cookie dough under her arm. It had been her own way of celebrating the end of the summer - nothing like drowning future sorrows in ice cream. Bea liked to plan in advance.

Her phone pinged and she glanced down, noticing the spooky looking icon she'd dedicated to Sea's contact picture. Clicking the bar, she brought the phone up to her face to stare at the picture. Wait... was that...

Oh my god.

The ice cream fell from her arm, landing with a loud, plastic crash against the sidewalk.

"You don't have thumbs. You need thumbs to-- to take a picture." She was going to die in the park. A massive orange cat was going to murder her because she took a picture in hopes of stunning it and it hadn't worked.

[Text to Boo] Bluebell Park. ]

[Text to Boo] Bea, I'm scared. ]

Ellenore Seance Blackwall wasn't one to admit things like that. She generally tried to be brave. She did things purposefully to provoke the attention of spirits. She had wandered off on her own more than once. She knew that there were risks involved in trying to communicate with the beyond, but never before had anything like this happened.

"A-alright. I'll delete the picture." She held up her phone, showing the cat the absolutely awful picture that she'd taken of him. The flash had been so bright that the glow of his eyes had nearly taken over his entire face, the black star on his forehead barely visible in the shadows between the shining glare. It wasn't flattering in the slightest and with the press of a button the photo was deleted.

Fortunately, the proof had already been forwarded and if she died in the playground there was at least enough evidence to start a new urban legend.

"I can help you find peace. I-- I know how to set spirits free and help them find their way home. I've read a lot of books...."

Ha... the kid actually deleted the picture. Sweet.

It wasn't every day that one of these brats actually listened to what he had to say. Goodness knew that if they did, he wouldn't be working nearly as hard as he'd been working and maybe, maybe, he'd have a little more respect given to him.

Bob opened his mouth to add another witty retort, but found himself speechless as the girl offered to set his spirit free.

Uh.

What??????

"Are you... are you smoking?" Not that he disapproved - hell, if she had a blunt, he was all for trying it, but, "Spirits? Peace? Kid - I'm a cat, I..."

With an extra set of leaps and bounds, Sailor Lovejoy made her way in the direction of the park. As soon as she'd read her friend's I'm scared text, she'd abandoned her phone, her ice cream and her identity to become a sailor scout, using the extra strength it provided to hurry her way over to the location her friend had messaged her.

It wasn't hard to find her, once she made it to the park. There wasn't but one lonely girl out there in the dark with one ominous looking fat cat staring her down.

"Sea! Sea, it's okay!"

She stopped, peering quizzically at this particular large orange cat. It was him again. Go figure her friend was afraid - she didn't know many cats that talked (okay, she knew approximately one) but from what she knew, they were mostly jerks.

"Sea, don't let him bother you - this fuzzy turd isn't going to hurt you."

_______________________________

The cat glowered as he recognized the familiar black and white senshi. "This turd has a name, you know."

"Cats don't talk." The words were past her lips before she could think about whether or not it was actually a good idea to remind the -- demon? spirit? creature? -- whatever that it was in a cat's body. Would it stress the being out to know that it wasn't whatever it might have been before? To know that it was a cat? If it was a spirit, would it become violent? Would it....

Her barrage of thoughts was cut short by the sound of someone calling her name. The voice sounded so familiar that she almost called back to it, only to freeze as she glanced up to see someone that was not Beatrice Kellye. "Oh my god. There are doppelgangers too?"

No one was going to believe her. The haunted cat and the doppel seemed to know each other. They were working together. "I didn't.... I didn't think things were going to end this way." She'd really thought that the 'something dreadful' she'd predicted during her tarot reading earlier that day had just been the start of the new school year... not her own demise.

"I don't know how you know my name, but I'm not smoking anything and I-- I'm pretty sure this isn't how I'm supposed to go."

Oh. Oops. Right, right - Sea didn't know about her super secret double identity. No wonder she was still panicking - shoot!!

"No, Sea, it's okay - test me, yeah?" The senshi looked around for something sharp to cut herself with, but there was, sadly, nothing deadly on the children's playground for her to utilize. "Salt, iron, silver - if you've got anything, I can prove I'm not a monster. It's me, Sea - it's Bea."

-----------------------------

The cat simply gawked.

"What are you doing?" He hissed under his breath, "Don't you know the meaning of the word secret identity? Not so secret when you're telling it to people."

Bob wasn't enthusiastic at knowing the dink he'd awoken earlier was somehow tied to this new dink who apparently had a fear of cats. Great. It was a regular 'ol night out at the circus.

Whatever.

"Call Boobs, then, pigtails." He grunted to the white haired senshi. "Your buddy's a special snowflake too."

-----------------------------

Dark eyes grew wide as the Mauvian's words finally clicked into place. Sea? Special too? What.... well, of course she was, why hadn't Bea figured that out yet!!!

Pulling out her compact, she called for her favorite Moth Momma - who else would be a better option to induct one of her closest buddies? Once that was done, it was time to try to uh. Explain things.

"Okay Sea. You gotta hear me out here," the girl started, hands raised up in a not gonna hurt you fashion, "Magic totally exists. But like... not as we're used to it. We're like, super heroes but with monsters - like, the really cool kind of magic."

At her boots, the orange cat rolled his eyes.

"I didn' bring any of those things with me...." Her voice dropped, lip quivering with disappointment in herself. She was supposed to be this great spirit medium and know all these things about monsters and ghouls and spirits. She had gone wandering after a wayward soul that evening, hoping to communicate, and she hadn't even brought her salt with her.

The thing was, if she paused to look closely at the young woman claiming to be Bea she'd notice that she was wearing metal. Sure, the only bit of it actually touching skin was her tiara, but those things were usually made out of silver, right?

The ginger beast was still talking and this was all so overwhelming. "Maybe I hit my head when I fell off of the swing," Sea muttered mostly to herself before flopping down onto the ground. She drew her knees up to her chest, resting her chin on them as she held one hand out to lightly tap her fingers against the grass in an attempt to catch the cat's attention.

"So-- so you're saying that all of the weird stuff that's been going on around down... Is real? And it's not terrorism or anything that the FBI can actually do anything out and... and it's more X-Files, but with magic?"

Lesath hadn’t been expecting the call from Lovejoy, and she was happy with the fact that she was even out, but sometimes things happened for a reason, obviously. She made her way to where the young senshi was and blinked, seeing both the Bob, and another girl there as well. A civilian girl. Well…if it was that type of a mix…

“Hello there. This is a regular party, isn’t it?” She was thankful that there was a mirror so close, it had been easy to find them, and it would be easy to bring this girl over to their team as well. For a moment, her attention turned to the orange cat and she grinned, opening her arms to him. “You coming up here for the ride, Bob-o? I’m assuming you’ll want to come home and for me to feed you again, hm?”

She glanced to the girl who looked rather…frightened. “Have these two been giving you a hard time? I apologize for that. My name is Lesath, and I promise, if you would like, I will explain everything, and get you some special powers to boot. At least…I’m going to assume that’s why I was brought out here.” Her hand extended towards Seance and she grinned. “It’s an adventure.”

The grass did catch Bob's attention, for all of a few seconds before the Eternal Senshi made her way onto the scene. Her aura flickered as she passed through the mirror (why in the heck there was one so close to the playground, he didn't know - Bob had stopped asking questions like that a long, long time ago) and as her arms opened wide towards the Mauvian, Bob took his cue.

Heavy paws crunched against the gravel beneath as he sauntered his fat little butt in the direction of the older woman. "Wouldn't miss a ride from you for the world," he finally responded cockily, taking a large leap into the blonde's arms, "Do I get a treat for finding this one too?"

Free dinner? Like hell he'd pass that up!

---------------------

Lovejoy, on the other hand, was quick to stoop down to her best friend's level. Lesath's arrival to their party brought a smile to the white haired girl's face but she knew that Sea's poor brain had to be reeling - goodness knows hers certainly was, after Lesath had introduced her to her secret identity counterpart.

"It's legit, Sea, I swear," she said quietly, watching as the older senshi moved to collect her friend. "Doesn't even hurt. One minute you're ordinary, then POOF, magical girl full of awesome... awesomeness?"

Okay, so she wasn't the queen of pep talks... but it wasn't half bad, right???

Magical girl full of awesome. Magical girl full of awesome. The white haired girl's words became the mantra that she used to ground herself in the moment as opposed to letting her thoughts run rampant towards the weird, strange, fantastical figments mentioned in the books she'd studied like gospel. Seance took a deep breath, releasing it slowly before confirming the words aloud.

"Magical girl full of awesome." She reached up to slip her hand into the one that had been offered to her, giving it a squeeze as she pulled herself up off of the ground. Bea wouldn't lie to her-- not about something potentially life threatening. Bea wouldn't put her in danger-- not danger that they wouldn't be able to get out of together.

Magical girl full of awesome.

"I'm Seance... And I'm in."

Lesath laughed and caught the cat in her arms, letting him rest against her as she took Seance’s hand. “It’s lovely to meet you. I promise this isn’t going to be something that you’ll ever regret.” She held the hand tightly enough that the girl wouldn’t slip out of her grip accidently, and gestured for Lovejoy to take her other hand, before heading back towards the mirror that she had come out of. “Now, this is going to feel a little strange…I’m going to go out on a limb and assume you’ve never gone through a mirror before.”

She allowed another grin, trying to reassure the younger girl and get her in to the mirror before she decided that she wanted to bolt again.

A moment later, the little party was through the mirror and into the vast, strange and ever changing area that they called Mirrorspace. And while Lesath still had a little hesitation after the whole fiasco of not long ago she smiled warmly, eyes lingering on the new recruit. “Do you see that mirror right there, Seance?” She was already tugging the girl towards it as she spoke, going slowly enough that she could at least have a small look around but, quickly enough that she hoped the fear wouldn’t have enough time to set in.

“All you have to do is walk into it. The black mirror will take care of the rest. I promise. And then Bob here,” She reached up and scratched the fat ginger cat behind an ear. “Will be able to tell us just who you are.”
