Medical Condition: Epilepsy Epilepsy is defined as a chronic neurological condition characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures. The most common times of occurence are under the age of 18, and above the age of 65. Some epileptics have a certain trigger that can cause seizures, but if this trigger can be classified as a normal part of everyday life, then the seizures are considered to be "unprovoked".
Parital seizures can be divided into two categories, simple and complex. Simple seizures have no effect on consciousness, and only cause sensory distortions or sensations. Complex seizures do have an effect, not necessarily meaning fainting, but possibly repetition of actions and speach or verbal sounds, blank staring and lack of knowledge of the seizure's occurence, dissassociation, or tunnel vision. The effects of a partial seizure also depend on the part of the brain in which they take place, ranging from anything to hallucinations to muscle spasms and convulsions.
More serious seizures can be classified as following (exerpt from Wikipedia): Generalised seizures can be sub-classified into a number of categories, depending on their behavioural effects:Quote: Absence seizures (sometimes referred to as petit mal seizures) involve an interruption to consciousness where the person experiencing the seizure seems to become vacant and unresponsive for a short period of time (usually up to 30 seconds). Slight muscle twitching may occur. Tonic-clonic seizures (sometimes referred to as grand mal seizures), involve an initial contraction of the muscles (tonic phase) which may involve tongue biting, urinary incontinence and the absence of breathing. This is followed by rhythmic muscle contractions (clonic phase). This type of seizure is usually what is referred to when the term 'epileptic fit' is used colloquially. Myoclonic seizures involve sporadic muscle contraction and can result in jerky movements of muscles or muscle groups. Atonic seizures involve the loss of muscle tone, causing the person to fall to the ground. These are sometimes called 'drop attacks' but should be distinguished from similar looking attacks that may occur in narcolepsy or cataplexy. Status epilepticus refers to continuous seizure activity with no recovery between successive tonic-clonic seizures. This is a life-threatening condition and emergency medical assistance should be called immediately if this is suspected. A tonic-clonic seizure lasting longer than 5 minutes (or two minutes longer than a given person's usual seizures) is usually considered grounds for calling the emergency services. Epilepsia partialis continua is a rare type of focal motor seizure (hands and face) which recurs every few seconds or minutes for extended periods (days or years). It is usually due to strokes in adults and focal cortical inflammatory processes in children (Rasmussen's encephalitis), possibly caused by chronic viral infections or autoimmune processes. May has a type of epilepsy known as Temporal lobe epilepsy. It is the most common type of epilepsy found in adults, with seizures beginning in the teens and late childhood. Most of these epileptics have complex type partial seizures.
She usually has seizures on a weekly basis, although she may bring on one if she becomes too exited or stressed.
Personality: May is a somewhat antisocial girl. Many children were afraid of her when she was young because of lack of understanding of her medical condition, and as such she has grown up somewhat distant from people. She tends to be more friendly when communicating with a long distance method, such as phone, email, or letter. However, she is not by nature a warm person. May isn't cruel to others, but she is a brutally honest person. She'll come out with what's on her mind, even if it may seem insulting to another person. She usually comes off as sarcastic. May also tends to get bored easily with routine. She absolutely hates her all too common visits to doctors, and has a dislike for them because of it.
Biography: May was born into a normal, middle class family home in Newport, Rhode Island. Even as a child, she was always wandering off exploring the world around her. However, this curiousity often got her in trouble with her parents and the neighborhood animals. At one point, after climbing over a fence, she was chased about by the neighbor's extremely unfriendly orange tom cat, leading to her preference of dogs.
While in elementary school, she was often teased by her larger peers. At one point, a particularly mean bully dropped the class pet, a mouse, down her shirt. It took her nearly half an hour to dislodge the rodent, leaving her with a fear of most things small and fuzzy. Most of the bullying took place in groups, leading to her dislike of crowds.
At about age nine, she was diagnosed with epilepsy. Several seizures took place in school, freaking out classmates, and leaving her somewhat distant from her peers. Around age twelve she recieved a seizure alert dog named Muffin, who had been trained to get her parents or a nearby person in case of a seizure. She deeply fell in love with the dog, taking him with her nearly everywhere.
Because of her love of art, she began to draw comics upon entering middle school, up through high school. She is the owner of a web comic known as "Princess Fantasy", about a unpopular girl who meets a merman prince, and tells him false stories about her life, and eventually becomes friends. She has been commended several times by art teachers for her work, though she considers it more a hobby than a serious profession.
Reason for Coming to Island: She was told that it was a medical clinic that could look into, and possibly cure, her epilepsy.

Picture:

Species Information: The Spinifex Hopping Mouse occurs mostly in Austrailia, in the arid zones, in both its namesake spinifex-covered sand flats and dunes, as well as mulga and mlaleuca flats. The population tends to fluctuate depending on weather, multiplying on rainy, wet years.
The Hopping Mouse are nocturnal, and travel by night, using their powerful hind legs to move swiftly across the ground.
The Spinifex Hopping Mouse is slightly larger than the common mouse. The hind legs are greatly elongated to give it jumping power, with smaller forelimbs, and a long brush-tipped tail. The fur is chestnut or fawn on top, pale underneath, and grey near themuzzle and eyes. The tail has some fur, and is mostly pink.
The Spinifex Mice live in family groups in deep burrow systems, maing nest chambers about a meter below surface.
