Vanaryn was nervous. She knew she had no real reason to, but she was all the same. Jacepi was visiting the Weyr, and her feelings had become so mixed over the last...shards. The last eighteen Turns. Her first baby, Jacepi's first baby, was all grown up. Jarah was a candidate, now.
She loved him, she did. But she had left him before Jarah had been born. She had told him she needed time, and he'd given it to her though he didn't understand why she wanted it. She had taken eighteen Turns, had three kids with other men. Why would he still have any feelings left for her when she'd done so much to hurt him? She hadn't meant to. Ugh. Everything was so confused when it came to him. She didn't know what to do anymore...

Jacepi had never been more nervous than he was today. Unless he counted when Jacel had been born. He'd been so afraid he would drop him. He'd gotten better at it, more confident with time. This wasn't that kind of thing. Every time he saw Vanaryn, his nerves seemed to increase. What if he did something stupid? He was off kilter now, what if he stumbled and embarrassed himself?
Would Jacel still be angry with him?
"Dad!" The boy in question ran out to meet him. No, then, Jacepi guessed as he wrapped his remaining arm around Jacel. "I've missed you! I hate it here! Did you come to take me home?"
Jacepi just hugged him, smiling sadly. "I've missed you too. Can you get Vannie for me?"

"I'm here," she said, coming up to father and son a minute later and giving him a smile. "I try not to let kids run around unsupervised," she teased. Usually she asked one of her older boys to keep an eye on him. He and Xibora didn't get a long well, and Adelly was even younger than Jacel. "How was your trip?" she asked, slipping her hands in the pockets of her leathers.

Oh, he hasn't expected that. He gave Vannie a small smile. "Fine," he said. He gently detached himself from Jacel and ruffled his hair. "Go see your brother, yeah, Jacel?" He said, gently pushing at him. "I want to talk to Vanaryn."
Jacel hugged him again and took off.
Jacepi looked to Vanaryn. "It's been a long time since I've come here," he said.

She watched Jacel run off, until she saw him meet up with Jarah. "Yes, it has," she murmured as she looked back at him. She smiled a little, her heart racing faster than normal. "How long are you planning on staying?" She felt heat warm her cheeks as she looked him over. Jacepi was still as handsome as he'd always been, regardless of the scars he'd sustained from Thread.

"Just until Jacel adjusts," he admitted. "Thank you for caring for him," he added, looking towards the two boys. Sending Jacel away had been the hardest thing he'd ever done. But his son deserved a better life than what he could provide.
"I'm sorry I'm imposing." He said, then.

She nodded. That made sense, but she was fairly sure Jacel would never want his father to leave the Weyr. If she were honest with herself, she wasn't sure she ever wanted him to leave. "Of course. It's really not a problem," she told him, waving off his next words. "You're not imposing at all. You're always welcome here." She smiled at him. "Are you hungry or anything?"

Jacepi smiled gratefully. "Thank you," he said. For letting him stay. For taking care of his son when he couldn't. "I really appreciate this." He hesitated for a moment, then shook his head, "Nah, thanks for the offer though."
"We could get something to drink, if you like." Water. Juice, anything to get the weird dryness in his mouth gone.

"Don't mention it," she told him. No, seriously. It was the least she could do after what she'd done before. "Yeah, sure. We can stop by the kitchen. How's that sound?"
She hadn't realized just how strong her feelings still were for this man. She wondered how he felt about her... As a sting struck her heart, she scratched that thought. Maybe she didn't want to know.

"Sounds good," Jace agreed. He offered his hand to her. "I don't know the way to the kitchens," he said. When he visited in the past, he'd always focused on Jarah. And usually when he and Vanaryn spoke, they argued.
That didn't seem to be the case today. "So you lead."

She couldn't help it. She blushed. Vanaryn was thankful the hue of her skin made it hard to see. Reaching out, she slid her palm against his and squeezed his hand lightly. "Sure," she said, a little breathless. She was so tired of fighting with him. She was glad that so far they weren't snarking or arguing.
"So how have you been since the last time we spoke?" she wondered as she led the way toward the kitchens.

Vanaryn was lucky. Jacepi didn't seem to notice.
He gave her a look. The last time he'd written, he'd just gotten away from the healers and pleaded with her to take his son. He couldn't care for Jacel in this way, boy how he always had. "Bored, I suppose. Jacel's been writing me left and right asking me to bring him home, but those letters are no good pinned on the wall. They just make me feel guilty."

She winced a bit. "I'm sorry. I'm trying to help him adjust but he's so stubborn." She gave a soft laugh. "Just like his brother. Like his father..." she trailed off, then shook herself. "I don't think he'll ever want you to leave." She smiled over at him. She hadn't been sure how to feel or act when she saw the extent of his injuries, so she hadn't said anything. Part of her was screaming that it was her fault he'd gotten hurt like this. If she hadn't run from him eighteen Turns ago, if she'd taken him with her to Western instead of leaving him at Fort, he would have been safe. So many things would have been different.

"I don't suppose he will. But I'll have to. You'll get tired of me eventually." He looked away briefly. She always did. Wasn't that why she'd given him the dragon sing excuse that she needed time and eighteen years had passed?
"I really appreciate you looking after him," he said, then. "Let's get to the kitchens." Before the unavoidable argument started.

"I won't," she said, the words spilling out of her mouth before she could stop them. She bit her lip but it was too late to stop now. "Get tired of you, I mean..."
She wasn't sure he heard her, or that it even mattered anymore. She had done so much to hurt them both, she didn't deserve a second chance. Instead of pushing the issue, she just kept walking toward the kitchens.
