There was a youma nearby. Anakeion wasn't dumb - she'd seen it before she'd felt it, since she'd just been Amaris in a (cute as hell) romper at the time - but it was a youma, and this was a daycare towards the end of the day and it was -
Well. It'd been, she'd checked her phone before powering up, around 5:15 pm. This place said it closed at five even, but there was clearly still a couple of late-leaver kids in there whose parents hadn't showed up, at least one staffer - and this was a big rhino-type creature, bubbling-mud skin, boiling-hot to the touch. That part she'd figured out real quickly; her arm was gonna have a nasty burn, even if she'd managed to deflect the horn onto her bracer. But the kid was desperately sobbing in the playground, and her legs were still mostly bare as always, and she was a single Squire against a big nasty.
There was another aura around, but they were just - she couldn't tell level, not distracted as she was, countering the youma's hits with her staff and trying to lure it away from the children because every damn time she heard them crying she thought about Zinnia and Lepus crying, Zinnia burning, Lepus' terrified face as she'd swung the staff; if it was affecting her fighting that was - a problem - she couldn't stop.
Stopping wasn't an option. She couldn't leave children to die. Not again, never again.

Lacedaemon loathed battles. More, he loathed getting his hands dirty at all, but the things he did for the sake of answers. And for seeing another Castor Knight in combat. A woman no less. “My my.” He said, “Rather nasty thing, coming to take children.” He almost felt bad for having to kill it. The youma had simply picked the wrong targets is all. It would have been easier to have let it loose in say, a middle school. Easier to blame damages on kids rather than near babes. A heavy sigh, the knight jumped inbetween the youma and the younger knight, his staff raised and connecting with the beast’s eye. “Be a dear and get the child to safety won’t you? I fear out interloper here will prefer a more wholesome meal rather than a snack don’t you?” Staff lifted again, he slammed it down, armor forming over his body in a thick layer of crystalline cold. “Plus, between us, it will hurt me far, far less I think.”

"s**t ********," Anakeion yelped, temporarily caught by surprise at Lacedaemon's voice and performing a rather impressive - if untrained - cartwheel out of the way of the creature's horn, "when the ******** did you get here -" She dropped one arm to her side and let the ice form under her fingers and grow up her other arm, freezing her perfectly to her staff; it was nontraditional, but it worked. In layman's terms, she managed an amateur pole vault with a shortstaff. How it worked was questionable, but it did. She had to trust Lacedaemon to keep it busy. The girl in the playground couldn't be more than five or six, tear tracks down her face, green hair pulled back in a loose ponytail. "Hey. Kid." Anakeion crouched down, extending her free hand; she let the magic go, ready to call it back at a moment's notice. "We need to go. It's gonna be okay, alright? But you need to trust me." The girl looked up, still hiccuping with the force of her sobs, and reached one tentative hand out.

"Language!" He yelled, voice holding all the authority of a grown man who had, (if barely), raised two boys. From the corner of his vision, the woman was getting the child to safety, leaving him to deal with the youma. He wasn't supposed to kill them per his arrangement, but, this would be one of the exceptions. He was, technically, allowed to remove them if their loss would further a larger goal. Ice blue ices raked over the young woman again. He figured it certainly would count. "You should go." He warned the beast, knowing it likely had no idea of his alliances and his treaty. When it screeched some unholy sound, the knight grunted. He thought so, just a lowly grunt youma. "They cannot say I did not offer an opportunity-" Lacedaemon muttered, waiting for the beast to strike. When it charged, Lacedaemon did not flinch, rather, he held out his staff, orb first and aimed for the horn. When it connected, steam billowed out as the youma screamed in pain, smoldering black horn falling off it's body like a severed limb. "Dear, once you've taken care of the child, do join me will you? I think i will require you weapon as well to properly eviscerate this foul thing."

"LITTLE BUSY," Anakeion yelled right back over her shoulder, voice harried; she made a quick mental calculation, then squeezed the child's hand tight and hefted the kid up with a grunt, balancing the weight. (She'd had to drop her staff. It wasn't practical to carry it, still.) The girl was still sobbing, and she clutched one pale hand to Anakeion's necklace and held tight, her one anchor in this mess of noise. Captain Amynta, I'm so sorry, it fell and we couldn't get him out - She stopped mid-stride, blinking at something that wasn't there, trying to make the memories that weren't of this life go away. Anakeion put the little girl down at the back of the building, away from the howling of the youma and ice crackling and falling - she needed to get away from - it ran too hot at the back of her throat, hot and ugly, and she thought of the broken hand she'd seen reaching out from under - This wasn't then, her name wasn't Amynta, no no no. It was okay. Nobody was dead. She called her staff back to hand, swallowed the nightmare back down, and let the ice crackle back up her arms as she slammed the staff into one of the youma's joints - it cracked, audibly, and the thing bellowed in pain as the leg refused to support it.

When the woman struck, Lacedeamon followed, his staff coming down with force on the youma's skull. It, (or was it the ice? He never particularly cared to think on such things) gave way with a sickening crack. The creature shrieked, flailing in pain before toppling over onto it's side, slowly dissolving into dust. As he brushed the dust from his body, the armor he wore vanishing along with his weapon, the knight looked at the chaos that still lingered. "Shall we see to the children or vacate? I have no desire to deal with police, much less angry parents." He might have been a father but familial love was not kind and rather lacking. He just did not mesh with more paternal types in the least.

"I," Anakeion started, and she swallowed hard - now that the youma was gone, she was still shaking, gone pale and sweaty, breath coming fast. "I - can't. I can't. Sorry. I can't save them. I have to - I can't." She let her staff go, desummoned, and she wanted to power down and leave Amynta's ghost behind; something in her mind whispered it would be a poor idea, but only just. Lacedaemon was old enough to be her father. Even if it was a dubiously noble cause, she couldn't get it out of her head, that she wouldn't be safe if he knew who he was; because she was a college dropout and an intern with a sugar daddy and a little sister, and if anyone looked too hard at any of it they would have been able to pull her strings. She didn't power down. But she wanted to.

Whatever the woman was dealing with, she was not dealing with well. With a deep sigh, Lacedaemon ran over his options. He could leave her, let her be picked off, or- Or. "Come now my dear, just take my arm, act natural and we shall walk out of here together. They might call out to us but if so, fear not. I am a fairly skilled orator. I will diffuse this situation." A small lie. "Come now, trust me my fellow knight. I will not harm you." Yet anyway.

She was still shaking, didn't know how to stop; Anakeion swallowed but her throat was still dry. "Not super reassuring, y'know, right?" There were more words, bubbling up out of her chest, threatening to run rampant; she kept them quiet, barely, fingers fluttering like sparrow's wings at her sides. "But. Sure. That works."

He reached down and taking her hand in his, he laid his hand over her own, giving it a small but firm squeeze meant to assure her of his presence at the least. "Come, the longer we linger the more risks we partake in sweetling. I would prefer you walk on your own legs, but if they are not an option I will carry you." How, he would determine if it came to that. A tug, he would not tarry any longer that was certain. "I am not above removing you by force for your own safety. I may not be fond of resorting to such means but you are of his highness's knights. I will not abandon you here." Blue eyes looked at her with steeled demand. "Come. Lacedaemon will shelter you through this storm as is my duty." As his bitter task that was thankless and subjective.

Anakeion jerked her hand away, still hyperventilating, after Lacedaemon tugged at it; "I can walk," she said, managing to breathe a little slower with every passing second. "I can walk. It's fine." Her laugh was quiet, incredulous. "If I ever call Castor my highness I'm ******** possessed. It's a work relationship but I'm not that formal with anyone."

Lacedaemon growled, full stop, face a mix of worry and agitation. "Then walk. Now. The police will arrive and bullets will not be stopped by my magic I'm afraid. I speak from experience, it is entirely unpleasant." He waited for her none the less, eyes looking back to ensure she was right behind as he strode and navigated the narrow streets and alleyways until they were just far enough and he visibily relaxed. "..." A heavy exhale, he looked the woman up and down now away from danger. "Apologies, but I was not keen to seeing you or I come to harm. And, I have not met Castor. I only know him tangently. And poorly spoken of at that."

It might have been safe, to drop her glamour here, away from prying eyes; but she didn't feel safe doing it. There was still something about Lacedaemon she couldn't put her finger on exactly, but it was something that bothered Anakeion in a way she didn't like. She wasn't prone to trusting older men in her normal life, but this didn't feel safe, didn't feel good. She stayed Anakeion and swallowed back her thoughts before any of them could show up on her face. She was good at that. "Nah, Castor's great, we're pals." She ambiguously wiggled her hand in the air. "Kinda. Don't talk a lot out of uniform, but it's not like we hate each other or anything, our lives just don't run on similar tracks."

Lacedeamon had doubts about Castor being anything but a brash youth playing at hero. He certainly hadn't done much in Europe aside from kill agents here and there and supposedly aided in getting senshi and other knights to safety when they'd been captured or nearly killed. He was a gnat that hovered in Lacedeamon's face and his plans. "Are you loyal to him then or just doing what is required then?" He kept his tone fairly even, trying to come off as more curious than judgmental. "He had a reputation you see, with women." He had, but not for the reason most would have expected. "So I am often..uncertain is all. But you are alright now? Nothing hurt?" He motioned to her. "You seemed a bit at a loss for a while there. Not new to battles I hope."

Anakeion shrugged, ambivalent, or at least that was the concept she was giving off. "Bit of both. Things need to get done, but I'm more loyal to him than I think most Knights are to their royals; since most of those assholes aren't even in the city, if they're even awake or alive. It's good to mix loyalty and friendship, since you can't break one without breaking the other." A reputation with women had her rolling her eyes, though. "God, I wish. My bet's on me being like. Two years too young?" "But - no. 'm not new to fighting. I just - " she sighed. "Memories that aren't mine. It's a thing about kids and it's ******** dumb and I can't seem to shake it."
