Swaying Yew Bowyers

User Image
A large, low building with a firing range out back. Run by a grumpy man named Mikiya, the Swaying Yew Bowyers is a group dedicated to training the finest bowyers and fletchers around.
A Note on Affinities: Some things listed below have "affinities". The effects listed alongside them only occur by replacing the Chakra in a relevant technique with the element listed. If two parts of an item have the same elemental affinity, both effects will activate; otherwise, only one activates. This has a side-effect of treating any techniques so altered like they're elemental Jutsu at whatever rank corresponds to the amount of Chakra converted, rounding down to the nearest rank. This is still in development and may be adjusted in the future.

___A r c h e r y
_-_-_Basic archery equipment.
Longbow [x1]
< 400 Ryo >
A bow roughly the user’s height in length. While it is more difficult to aim, offers lower arrow speed, and is much larger than other kinds of bow, it can handle much higher draw weights and heavier arrows to make up for it. Learning bow techniques with this bow type takes 1 post longer to adjust for aiming difficulties. Has a range of 200 meters.

Recurve Bow [x1]
< 600 Ryo >
A short bow type known for firing arrows at high speeds. Though hard to string, it’s easier for beginners to draw and is more versatile and mobile than a longbow. Offers 1 post reduction for learning bow techniques C-Rank or below and a slight increase to speed for bow techniques. Has a range of 75 meters.

Compound Bow [x1]
< 1500 Ryo >
A short bow type that uses a pulley system and modern materials. While it is significantly more difficult to make than other bow types and requires a great deal of specialized training and maintenance, the compound bow is extremely light and fires well in almost all conditions. It is also much easier to hold at full draw, decreasing the cost of bow techniques by 5 Stamina, to a minimum of 5 Stamina total cost. Can use heavy arrows. Requires 2 posts of maintenance be done after a battle or 1 post after training or the bow suffers significant wear that causes it to snap if a technique of B-Rank strength or higher is used with it. Has a range of 100 meters.

Takedown Bow Grip [x1]
< 450 Ryo >
A custom-made grip for the Takedown Bow. As a standard grip is included with the Takedown Bow modification, this is intended for cases where the user has special requirements for the grip to accommodate a certain kind of firing or grip. Allows a bow to be treated as a different type of bow for use with a style, but does not affect draw weights and thus cannot make a non-Warbow act as a Warbow. Does not affect post reductions. Negates any wood affinity unless all parts are the same wood.

Replacement Bowstring [x1]
< 50 Ryo >
Sometimes a mistake happens and a bowstring snaps. Luckily, the Swaying Yew has an excess of bowstrings and will sell a new string for cheap.

___M o d i f i c a t i o n s
_-_-_Enhancements and options to customize your new bow.
» Modification: Flatbow [x1]
< -100 Ryo >
A modification for the Longbow that uses a rectangular cross-section, resulting in a thicker, weightier bow. This bow type suffers much less stress, which allows for use of inferior woods when crafting. It is also much easier to make for amateur craftsmen. (Crafting this bow type takes one post less but requires slightly more materials.)

» Modification: Warbow [x1]
< +600 Ryo >
A modification for the Longbow that makes it slightly longer and uses denser wood to increase draw strength to amazing levels. Shots ignore up to light armor, but any descriptive increases to the wielder’s movement speed are negated. Light arrows are destroyed immediately upon firing. Increases range by 1 meter per pound of draw weight the user has gained from styles, PA, or other training. Holding a prepared bow technique now requires 10 Stamina per post.

» Modification: Reflex Bow [x1]
< +200 Ryo >
A modification for the Recurve Bow that significantly increases its curvature. This bow type is significantly harder to string but is much shorter.

» Modification: Takedown Bow [x1]
< +400 Ryo >
A modular bow type able to be disassembled and reassembled for easy storage. The grip serves as the most important part, with limbs able to be swapped out during assembly. Easiest to transport, but requires a post be spent assembling before use. If used alongside the Warbow modification, an additional 200 Ryou cost must be paid to ensure the attachment points are strong enough to withstand the additional draw weight. (When crafting a takedown bow, each piece counts as a separate project.)

» Modification: Takedown Bow Limbs [x1]
< +100 Ryo >
Limbs that attach to the grip of a Takedown Bow. Extra care must be taken to ensure the durability and strength of the limbs is not compromised during the process to convert them to a useful form for the Takedown Bow.

» Modification: Self Bow [x1]
< +0 Ryo >
The bow is constructed from one piece of wood. It is significantly easier to make a bow this way, but the performance of the bow is wholly dependent on the type of wood used. This comes standard for all bows. Crafting a self bow takes two posts less.

» Modification: Composite Bow [x1]
< +150 Ryo >
The bow is constructed from multiple pieces of wood or other materials. While this method requires careful selection of materials and affixing the pieces together with glue, it provides increased range and power in a smaller package. Unfortunately, the bow also becomes susceptible to damage by moisture, so care must be taken to make sure it stays dry. Increases bow range by 25 meters and decreases its size slightly, but causes the bow to weaken and eventually break if stored or used in a humid location for more than half a day. Bow only has one affinity, chosen from the materials that constitute it.

» Special Wood: Rosewood [x1]
< +5000 Ryo >
An extremely rare wood found only in coastal regions, primarily in the Water Country. Though it is mechanically one of the best woods in the world for bows, its red color resulted in its use in decorative woodworking above all else and as a result it suffers from overexploitation. Fired ammunition ignores descriptive increases to strength and fortitude for any techniques that intercept it. Water affinity: Any hazards on fired ammunition splash outward on impact, causing a second dose to be immediately applied to anyone struck.

» Special Wood: Muninga [x1]
< +1000 Ryo >
A rare wood found only in the arid climates of the Wind Country and the southern parts of the Fire Country bordering thereon. Often used in woodworking and as charcoal or wood fuel, though it is also noted to be very good for soil health on farms as it fixes nitrogen. Naturally comes in yellow, red, and brown colors. Fired ammunition ignores up to two descriptive increases to the target's fortitude and range is increased by 5 meters. Fire affinity: Fired ammunition ignites and passes through non-reinforced flammable objects in its path without stopping and is treated as a rank higher when dealing with techniques that employ those objects.

» Special Wood: Yew [x1]
< +1000 Ryo >
A rare wood found in forested regions in the Fire and Lightning Countries, albeit more rarely in the latter. Considered the king of all bow woods. Yew wood, pollen, and foliage are highly toxic and prolonged exposure can cause various problems including blindness, making it difficult to acquire and work with despite its high workability. Naturally comes in tan, yellow, and orange-brown colors. Range is increased by 20 meters. Wind affinity: Fired ammunition is not affected by wind and other weather effects on trajectory and is treated as a rank higher when dealing with techniques that cause those effects.

» Special Wood: Osage Orange [x1]
< +750 Ryo >
An uncommon wood found in every region near freshwater lakes and rivers. The tree is extremely resistant to damage by changes in season or habitat, which has allowed it to propagate over such a wide range of environments. Comes in golden and bright yellow colors. When unstrung, a bow made from this wood can be used as a staff without affecting its usefulness as a bow. Earth affinity: Fired ammunition deals damage with its impact as much as anything else, causing half a meter of knockback per rank of the technique that fired it.

» Special Wood: Coastal Yew [x1]
< +1000 Ryo >
A rare wood found only in the Water Country. Though it is mechanically similar to standard yew, the change in environment has somewhat lowered the wood's suitability as a bow. It is as toxic as standard yew with similar workability. Comes with a pale yellow, tan, or light orange-brown color. Range is increased by 10 meters. Water affinity: The trajectory of fired ammunition cannot be read in heavy rain or fog.

» Wood: Tambootie [x1]
< +1250 Ryo >
An uncommon wood found mainly in the coastal areas of the Wind Country and throughout the Lightning Country. Though it ruins tools after working (which contributes to its high cost despite its availability), it is very beautiful after working and gives off a sweet scent, which help raise its price when selling a worked product. Interestingly, the wood contains a toxic oil that confers similar effects to yew exposure, and burning it creates a toxic cloud. Has a vivid golden or reddish-brown color broken up by black streaks. Lightning affinity: Any hazards on fired ammunition are conducted outward like electricity on impact, causing them to afflict regardless of intervening armor.

_-_-_Sometimes you need something special for your bow. Who are we to judge?
Sight [x1]
< 75 Ryo >
A sight that can be attached to a bow to make it easier to aim. Good for beginners or people who like the aesthetic. Confers a 1 post reduction to learning bow Formless styles up to C-Rank.

String Wax [x1]
< 150 Ryo >
Keep that bowstring looking nice with a container of our special wax! It'll keep you firing all day without worrying about wear and keep the noise of firing to a minimum. Good for 5 applications.

Bow Case [x1]
< 200 Ryo >
Travel in safety and style with our special bow case, designed specifically to fit one of our bows so it doesn't suffer during travel.

Arm Guard [x1]
< 125 Ryo >
A nice leather guard for your arm to keep the bowstring from bruising it after firing. Hey, if you can take the bruises, just don't get it!

Firing Glove [x1]
< 125 Ryo >
A glove for your firing hand that keeps the string from hurting your fingers. Got thick enough calluses or aren't worried about the pain? Then what are you looking at this for?!

Standard Target [x1]
< 250 Ryo >
A cool target model shaped like a person! If you're looking for something a bit smaller, we can swap that out for five targets shaped like small creatures. I suggest the latter if you're hunting the deadliest game of all: rabbits.

Big Target [x1]
< 300 Ryo >
A target shaped like some kind of big game, like a deer or a zebra. If you want something bigger than this you'll need to make it yourself, 'cause we ain't gonna do it here!

Hunters' Laundry Detergent [x1]
< 150 Ryo >
A bottle of specially formulated laundry detergent that makes animals less likely to spot you immediately. It's a well-known fact that ghosts inhabit normal detergent, but ours is 100% locally sourced and ghost free! Course, it won't help if you're running around in an orange jumpsuit.

___F l e t c h e r
_-_-_Yeah, you try firing a bow without an arrow. Don't come crying to me when it breaks.
Arrow Set: Light [x1]
< 15 Ryo >
A set of thin-shafted arrows of standard make. Contains 10 arrows of the purchaser's chosen style. While light and easy to wield, these arrows are easily broken and should not be used with heavy draw-weight bows. The speed of bow techniques employing these light arrows is mildly increased (up to the normal limit), but their range is reduced by 25 meters.

Arrow Set: Medium [x1]
< 20 Ryo >
A set of arrows of standard weight and make. Contains 10 arrows of the purchaser's chosen style. A good middle-ground between light and heavy arrows, this weight is considered the standard one for measuring a bow's effectiveness.

Arrow Set: Heavy [x1]
< 25 Ryo >
A set of thick-shafted arrows of standard make. Contains 10 arrows of the purchaser's chosen style. While heavy and somewhat difficult to fire, these arrows travel much more reliably through the air when fired from an appropriate bow and are better against armored targets. Reduces the speed of all bow techniques supremely unless shot from a warbow. Increases bow range by 25 meters when shot from a regular longbow or a warbow.

» Arrowhead: Bullet [x1]
< -10 Ryo >
A type of "bald" arrowhead designed for easy retrieval. A good, cheap arrowhead. Augments all arrows in a purchased set.

» Arrowhead: Blunt [x1]
< +0 Ryo >
An arrowhead with a reinforced, blunt tip. Used to hunt small game and creatures susceptible to stunning, as the arrowhead ensures that there is no penetration but delivers all force as blunt, crushing damage. Augments all arrows in a purchased set.

» Arrowhead: Grabbing [x1]
< +5 Ryo >
A hooked arrowhead designed not to penetrate deeply to prevent a misfired arrow from getting lost. Causes practically no lasting damage to living targets outside the weight of the impact, but can be used to effectively deliver poison. Augments all arrows in a purchased set.

» Arrowhead: Bowfishing [x1]
< +5 Ryo >
A barbed arrowhead designed to penetrate tough fish skin. Forcibly removing this arrowhead causes catastrophic damage to the area that requires surgery to recover from fully. On its own, this arrowhead does not cause much damage until removal. Augments all arrows in a purchased set.

» Arrowhead: Broadhead [x1]
< +10 Ryo >
The typical bladed arrowhead, typically made of hardened and sharpened steel nd used to hunt big game. The head flares outward to discourage removal. Causes mild bleeding on hit, increasing upon removal. Can easily cause severe internal bleeding when used with high draw weight bows such as longbows and warbows. Somewhat better at dealing with light and medium armors than other arrowheads. Augments all arrows in a purchased set.

» Fletching: Straight [x1]
< +0 Ryo >
Fletching with minimal curve to ensure the arrow does not spin more than the archer calls for. Generally considered to be the standard. Augments all arrows in a purchased set.

» Fletching: Curved [x1]
< +0 Ryo >
Curved fletching designed to make the arrow spin during flight. Increases penetration against non-armored targets mildly. Grabbing-type arrowheads instead cause surface damage at the impact point. Augments all arrows in a purchased set.

» Fletching: None [x1]
< +0 Ryo >
No fletching. This removes almost all stabilizing influences and makes it exceedingly likely the arrow will tumble through the air. Reduces range by 75% and removes all descriptive bonuses to bow techniques. Techniques misfire hilariously. Good as a gag present for the archer in your life. Augments all arrows in a purchased set.

» Fletching: Range [x1]
< +5 Ryo >
Exceedingly smooth fletching that decreases arrow drag while stabilizing it. Increases range by 5 meters. Augments all arrows in a purchased set.

» Fletching: Diver [x1]
< +25 Ryo >
Stiff fletching designed for use underwater. Augments all arrows in a purchased set. Water affinity: Arrows fly through water as though it were air.

» Fletching: Spiked [x1]
< +25 Ryo >
Metallic fletching taking the form of pointed metal fins. Augments all arrows in a purchased set. Lightning affinity: Lightning- or electricity-based Ninjutsu ignores descriptive increases to speed and reflexes for the person struck until this arrow is removed.

» Fletching: Porous [x1]
< +25 Ryo >
Fletching with tiny indentations in it. Augments all arrows in a purchased set. Wind affinity: Propagates powder-based or aerial toxins in a half-meter diameter cloud around impact.

» Fletching: Heavy [x1]
< +25 Ryo >
Fletching that runs up a significant length of the shaft, sporting very heavy weight. Augments all arrows in a purchased set. Earth affinity: Projectile weight is drastically increased, converting any strength and speed DR gained from techniques to a quarter-meter of knockback per DR.

» Fletching: Rough [x1]
< +25 Ryo >
Fletching with tiny upturns that increase the friction it feels with the air. Augments all arrows in a purchased set. Fire affinity: Projectile lightly burns flesh at the point of impact (not enough to cauterize).

» Payload [x1]
< +20 Ryo >
A small hook or container on the arrow designed for holding some sort of payload. Ideal for carrying messages, seals, or chemicals. Only available for medium or heavy weight arrows. Augments all arrows in a purchased set.

___O t h e r
_-_-_Some other stuff you could use.
Quiver: Small [x1]
< 50 Ryo >
A quiver holding up to 10 arrows. Being rather small and light, its main draw is that it doesn't hinder the wearer at all when firing. Only two quivers may be worn at a time during combat.

Quiver: Medium [x1]
< 100 Ryo >
A quiver holding up to 20 arrows. Being of moderate size, it is slightly more unwieldy than the small quiver while worn, reducing the speed of bow techniques by two descriptive ranks to accommodate the time taken to retrieve an arrow. Only two quivers may be worn at a time during combat.

Quiver: Large [x1]
< 200 Ryo >
A quiver holding up to 40 arrows. The size of this quiver makes it very unwieldy to use while worn, decreasing the speed and strength of bow techniques by three descriptive ranks to compensate for time spent adjusting the quiver and retrieving an arrow. Only two quivers may be worn at a time during combat.

Wind Whistle [x5]
< 25 Ryo >
A whistle that can be attached as a payload to an arrow. Emits a loud, high-pitched whistle when fired to allow for easy tracking of the arrow (or to harass an enemy).

Climbing Line [x1]
< 110 Ryo >
A lightweight but durable length of rope that can be attached as a payload to an arrow. If the arrow embeds itself in something solid, this line can be used to climb up to its position or haul whatever the arrow attached itself to.

Signal Flare [x1]
< 200 Ryo >
A large cinder that can be attached as a payload to an arrow. When struck, the cinder burns very brightly for two posts, allowing it to be seen at great distances.

Payload Chain [x1]
< 250 Ryo >
An extension for an arrow's payload that holds up to five payload attachments. Decreases arrow speed by three descriptive ranks and range by 5 meters per payload chain.

Artemis Souma

▴ Shishin▴ Nin Specialist ▴ 575/595 ▴ 185/185 ▴ D-Rank ▴

Artemis sneered as she threw down the last rag. There were some remnants of mud on her shoes, still, but her legs were mostly clean. She approached the Swaying Yew owner to introduce herself, but the owner was somewhat heartbroken over the lack of business and held little faith for her. Artemis could fix that, easy.

She stepped outside, breathing in deep and taking in her surroundings. There was no stage or any helpers to make this easier, but she liked a challenge. She cupped her mouth and shouted at the crowd of shoppers ignoring the Swaying Yew. "Ladies and Gentlemen! Are you prepared to defend yourself from dangers far and wide?" She formed a few hand seals quickly, creating a clone of herself. She made a wide gesture with her arms in lieu of an introduction.

She had her clone charge at her. Artemis dodged the weak punches with exaggeration, panting loudly to emphasize her exhaustion. "See how inconvenient this is?" Her clone pulled out her brass knuckles and swung predictably at Artemis. Artemis punched the face of the clone at the same time the clone swiped at her, leaving a fake bloody scratch on Artemis' cheek.

The clone dispersed into dozens of crows. Artemis pointed to her bloody cheek as she turned to the audience. "See my pain? This could've been avoided!" As the crows flooded the sky and harassed the onlookers, Artemis made a duck call to summon the store owner, who was armed with a nice warbow and custom arrows. "Oh, is that an amazing Swaying Yew bow?

The owner, playing the part of the hero, aimed at crow after crow and leased arrow after arrow. In mere moments, all of the visible crows had dissipated under the assault of the custom arrows. Artemis looked around at the now-safe shoppers. She paused, then began to slow clap for the owner. The audience took the hint and began an applause. "And you can save the day too! All you need is a bow and some fine arrows from the Swaying Yew today!!"
                                                                                  [ C | Performance | Complete! ]

                                                                                  [exit]

User Image Having gathered enough information to find out that the archery store had a range, Hikari was quick to head there. Making her way out back she grabbed her gun and got comfortable. First she decided to check the sight to make sure it was aligned properly. [1/4][1/6] Everything looked fine though the magnification made the targets seem a tad too close. Not much she could do about that though. Making a couple adjustments here and there she got all sighted in. [2/4][2/6] Now was the big test. Feeding some clay to her palm it soon spit it out into the base chamber. With her other palm she molded a bullet. [3/4][/3/6] The bullet was then loaded into the chamber. Taking a deep breath she gently squeezed the trigger. Meanwhile chakra was passed through the trigger towards the base chamber. [4/4][4/6] The clay in the base chamber soon detonated and the explosive force and pressure was forced into the bullet chamber. Then the bullet was propelled down the barrel and out of the muzzle. The clay bullet soon impacted on the target and exploded into it while the bullet penetrated the hay. [1/6] [5/6] The hay was left singed and smoldering where the bullet had exploded. It was a pretty good shot but the clay needed some adjustments. Soon enough Hikari had gotten the formula down right and was able to accurately shoot bullets.

Since she wall excited about it Hikari wanted a special shell to celebrate the occasion. She'd really developed her art form far now so it she created a special clay that had a slower burn inside the bullet. When she fired it up into the air it burned brightly as a flare. Brilliant absolutely brilliant. Now that Hikari felt great about her training she wanted to go earn some money. [1/1] [Exit]
