Lime grumbled, kicking over a trash bin as he looked down at the man who was cowering below him on the pavement. Some scum bag dealing coke behind some rag strip club. It was so trite and cliché that a literal prime example of scum would be around a place like this, but, what did Lime care? It was energy he was after, what did it matter where he got it? A hand diving into the man’s chest, Lime sneered at the scream. “Come on b***h. Louder.” He said, ripping the glittering gem from the body. “Could have at least have made it fun.”

Even if Mamertine hadn’t felt the energy signature, he would have heard the scream. If he were wearing a different outfit, he would have just pulled out his cell phone and call for the police, but like this?
Like this, it was his job to deal with problems.
The page didn’t waste anytime and bolted into a run. The sound of the scream made it easy to track the two down and, even if he didn’t quite know what was going on, he knew that he needed to intervene.
The starseed was already out of his body, so he put his full effort into it; when he spotted the man, he ran towards him and kicked him as hard as he could in the back of the legs even as he tried to snatch the starseed from him.

Lime did not see this coming. Not even felt it coming. Not until it was too late, and he was being sent across the pavement in a rough tumble, starseed rolling on the ground in the other direction. When Lime realized what the ever living hell had just happened, he blinked they promptly ******** CHRIST a*****e." He was just doing his job- couldn't he just catch ONE break? Just one? "Not even a warning? Now that's just cowardly."

Mamertine cared more about the starseed than he did the Negaverse agent; he moved to retrieve it before addressing the man. He lifted it up, protectively, and glowered at the agent. It was difficult not to be captivated by the strange glistening gem that apparently existed in all of them—and yet, somehow, didn’t appear in a single medical textbook.
It was a mystery he’d have to consider more at a later point in time; just because he had the starseed didn’t mean it was safe, or that this man wasn’t going to be a problem.
“I doubt you’d have given me the same courtesy. But if you’re insisting manners, the best I’m willing to do is ask you to leave, now.”
His eyes narrowed and he said, flatly and with little expectation, “Please.”

Lime's aggression was hardly stalled by the knight's polite attempt to send him away, rather, it only served to further incite him. Lime had his work, and, he was for once, thinking he could have a bit of sadistic fun out of it. Not like it was a fun job, but hey, had to get the kicks from somewhere. "Nah, guys like you put up a fight. You're best knocked out, though, you don't scream then." He felt it might do to try and get the other man riled, make this fight at least worth being interrupted for. "It's what makes half the fun, watching them squirm." Thats when Lime threw the nesting doll at him.

Mamertine wasn’t expecting the attack; the nesting doll hit him, square in the face.
It hurt, but not as much as it stunned him.
It knocked his head back enough that his vision was suddenly just sky. For a second, all he could do was blink. Slowly, he lowered his head so he could see Lime.
“Did you just throw a doll at me?” he asked, voice low and slightly incredulous. He was insulted, and confused.
“Is that your idea of intimidating?”
He might have a bit of a bruise, or a small welt, but for some reason, he’d been expecting so much more.
He wanted to punch this man, hard, in the face. Instead, he just gripped his gavel and hurled it at him in his own, petty, retaliation.

Lime was the type of person to act then realize said action had been a bad decision and regret it very quickly afterwards understanding that he'd just ******** up badly and there was no real way to recover from what he'd just done. Asked if he'd indeed, just thrown the equal of a toy at the man's head, Lime made a very long 'UH' sound. "Look buddy, I work with what I got, and what I got was a shitty doll. It's not like they just trust us with weapons out of the gate. They're not stupid. Well that stupid anyway." He smirked, but it vanished as the gavel caught him in the temple, making Lime clutch his head with a yelp of sudden pain. This guy had a gavel and he was giving him s**t over nesting dolls. <********. That your idea of justice?" He glared fist formed. "How about we do this old school style? Nothing fancy, just our fists? Preferably ending with mine in your chest."

“Or,” Mamertine countered, “You leave his starseed with him, and we part ways. I’ll be done with you for tonight, you can do whatever you intended to. Or,” he shrugged. “We fist fight, until we’ve worn ourselves out, and we crawl off in opposite directions. Is that really how you want to spend your evening? Because, it sounds like a waste of time to me.”
He glanced at the man on the ground and was quiet for a moment.
He didn’t try to attack the Lieutenant again; instead, he just seemed to be contemplating.
“Why did you choose him?” he asked after a moment. The body might be alive, but he understood the implication of losing a starseed. He added, even though he doubted he needed the clarification, “To kill.”

Lime snorted through his mouth. "Does it matter? Dead is dead at the end of day. He's useless to me alive, he's useless to me dead. His only purpose is a vessel for a starseed which has use. That's all." Shoulders went up then down and Lime didn't feel the need to justify his actions. He smirked. "But I'll let you in on a secret. You'd regret not handing over that starseed to me. Maybe not today or tomorrow, but eventually. If I walk away empty handed, I'll get reprimanded for failing my duties. If I come back with a few bumps and scrapes well then at least I have an excuse. So I mean really. Your call. Regret it, or leave me to it." Lime cracked his knuckles. "Either way, I come out on top is how I see it."

Mamertine was quiet for a moment, with the same judgmental expression he seemed to wear so well. “It matters,” he said. “I want to know why I should care more about you being reprimanded than I should about this man’s life. Your excuse is, pardon my language, piss poor. What is there for me to regret by not handing this over? I mean, really. I don’t see how you come on top either way, but if you’re asking me to give you a few bumps and bruises,” he shrugged.
“If that’s what you want, I suppose I can manage. But I’m not going to just give you this starseed.”

The scoff that Lime let out betrayed his depth of contempt for the man who lay motionless on the pavement. "You think this lowlife contributes anything to this world? Look at him." Lime kicked the body nearing the knight in the process. "He's trash. I'm altruistic, not really, but if you save him, you really think he's going to change what he is? What he does? Peddling drugs, people, he wants money and power and is more than happy to kill people slowly to do it. So that's how I see it. Give me his starseed, you potentially spare any lives he might go on to ruin. Let him live, save him, and every once of coke, every shot of heroin his clients take is your fault." Lime's smile was cruel. "I get reprimanded if I show up without a starseed. But at least all the people who's live would be otherwise ruined won't be on my conscious. Either way, I win." Kyuseisha no Hikari idk man thought it might be interesting

Mamertine tilted his head to the side just slightly. “People are responsible for their own decisions. The choice of a drug dealer, of an addict, that’s not my fault. You won’t guilt me into responsibility for their choices. What makes you so certain he’ll kill, though?”
Mamertine didn’t make any effort to return the starseed; he glanced at it thoughtfully, squinting his eyes at it as if closer examination would have been enough to see if this man was worth saving.
He wasn’t a fan of anyone out making Destiny City a worse place, but was death a fitting punishment for someone who peddled drugs?
The voice in the back of his head told him strongly, no.
But a murderer? Someone who had escaped punishment, so far?
He wasn’t so against an eye for an eye. Not when the evidence was laid bare before him.
He turned his attention back to Lime expectantly.
Mamertine only needed the evidence.
