Before they even got to the room he threw the door wide open and stared down the walkway he knew they'd be coming from, as if that would summon whoever it was faster. "C'mooooooon..."

Seren walked quietly out down the hall to the Pod room. She'd been assigned to 'put pamphlets where they can be given to new hunters, then assist if needed with whoever had pod duty.' She felt both irritated at the 'idiot newb' treatment and irritated that she had to come back here already. It'd been like 2 weeks. Bah humbug on them, but here she was. She had the last stack of stupid papers in her hand and was going to just leave them in the Observation room. She couldn't wait to go back to her dorm and sleep, though. When she walked in, she blinked at the person she didn't know waiting there for her. "I have pamphlets, where do you want them...?" She finally said, after studying the other person for a moment. She slid through the door, and around him, glancing at what chairs were open. She could tell where he'd been based on the magazine, and decided NOT to be a little evil and steal it. Instead, she leaned on the back of a chair right by the door. "I'm Seren, by the way."

Rhys let her slide past him without much of a concern. He was hoping it'd be a familiar face so when she showed up it was sort of disappointing but at the same time...interesting? Meeting new people wasn't his favorite thing to do, but he could deal. "Rhys," he said as he flopped back onto his chair. "And by the door's fine, just as long as they're easy to get to."
He took a second to look her over, making his own initial judgments in silence (and hearing but ignoring Zeph, who was growling at him for it) before finally asking a simple question. "So how long you been out? You got that 'fresh and new' vibe comin' off you."

She nodded and flopped them on the nearest flat surface by the door, and then looked at him as well, studying her erstwhile 'pod observation mentor', if one was so inclined to call an evening watching pods with a complete stranger so she could learn how it was done something that REQUIRED mentoring. Her expression as she took in his appearance and the way he moved and spoke was completely void of emotion for the moment. Diwata, on the other hand, was yelling in her head to chat because this was the first individual of the opposite gender Seren seemed likely to spend time with, even if it was work. After a moment, Seren shot a 'SHUT UP' thought to Di, and said "Yeah. 2 weeks. Yay me, total newbie. Sorry if I mess up, I know s**t all so far, practically." She closed her eyes and sighed, then dredged up a smile and opened her eyes again. "That said, nice to meet you, Rhys."

Rhys, when he was done with the once-over, just shrugged and kicked one of the chairs towards her, a way of inviting her to have a seat. "No big. Pod duty's perfect for newbies," he started, "since basically nothing ever happens. Boring as s**t but someone's got to, so here we are."
"All you really gotta know is the lay of the building and where to direct someone if they wake up," he went on, then tapped the desk full of surveillance equipment. "Basically we kill time watching these screens." He fished around in a nearby drawer and eventually came up with an old, falling-apart deck of cards, then started dealing out a game of Hold 'Em.
"Questions? I'll answer 'em while we play."

She settled in, and tossed a lock of her colorful hair off her face, annoyed at it for the moment. "Yeah I guess, I just... Dunno, seems weird being here so soon. Shouldn't I be more focused on... I dunno, training or something of that nature?" She shrugged, and sighed. "Maybe I'm just expecting too much, I suppose. It just seems like it'd be logical. Newbies get trained hard, THEN do the stuff once they have a ******** clue and can make sure they don't like... ******** something up." Part of her was quite convinced she would be successful at ******** up. After all, she did such a good job with her own life. She sighed, and took her cards from him, eyeing her hand. She wasn't particularly good at poker, but at least it was something to do. "Um. How often do these things... hatch...? Like once a week, a month... Less, more...?" She was praying for NO action of that nature tonight. Actually minimal action of any nature, she didn't know the guy at all, and frankly she couldn't see this as a place where anything more exciting then cards would be even slightly comfortable.

Rhys was lounging back in his chair, very obviously a little more relaxed and not-going-insane now that there was someone to talk to and something more to do than read a magazine he'd read at least three times before. He kept his eyes on his cards for the most part, only looking up for a second when she was talking. "Just look at it like training your patience, I guess?" He snorted, then mumbled, "This place is pretty hard training for that, lemme tell you."
"Anyway, you'll ******** up at some point. Just a matter of when. This place is too unpredictable for anyone to know how everything works and get it all right, all the time. Do what you're assigned, train when you can, don't die. Pretty much all there is to it."
Not that he was much of an expert as far as the island was concerned; he'd been shipped off to an outpost for over a year and a half. Still, it gave him a sense of accomplishment being able to make a comment based on what experience he did have.
The word "hatch" got another snort out of him, and he leaned forward to lay out the turn before answering. "The term is 'open,' I think. They're not aliens, just people taking really long a** ********' naps. And it depends. No one's woken up on my shifts but I'd say once a month at the very, very least."

"Training my patience?" She sighs and riffles her cards, a moue of irritation on her face. "I'm tired of patience training, after 18 years of patiently waiting to be legal on my own." She shook her head, and made a displeased face for having even said that. "Never mind. I suppose it can't be all learning to use my damn huge sword correctly." She paused, then snerked a little, unable to resist a snarky moment. "Probably better then my ex was with his." She then shook her head. "Sorry, sorry. I learned to use dirty jokes as stress relief." She listened to his comments about ******** up and just gave an ugh expression. "I suppose that's life, ******** up at some point, but I'd rather not when some one else's life is on the line. Hope if I do, I can keep them from dying." She paused then studied the cards on the table. "Though I guess that's less likely here. Here ******** up would mean what, some one puking on my shoes?" "Eh, hatching, opening, what's the difference? You have some one who is pretty useless due to the 'fun fun fun' of being in that thing for who knows how long, just like a newly hatched baby is generally not able to do much. I dunno, doesn't seem to make a difference, but fine. 'Opening' it is." She brightened up at his comment about no one waking up on his shift. "Oooo excellent, maybe your luck will rub off on me."

Rhys couldn't help laughing at least a little at the dirty joke, but he didn't comment. No, he let her go on talking for a bit while he assessed his cards, only realizing now that they hadn't actually made any kind of bets after the opening flop.
"Idiot," he muttered before throwing his cards down. "Forgot to ********' make the bets. Give 'em back, gotta deal again."
"And trust me, I'd rather one of these pods opens up while I'm here. Least I'll feel like I got something done other than sit on my a** for whatever number of hours."

"Bets? If you want. You do realize I have like no money, being 2 weeks in?" She sighed, and closed her eyes, then shrugged. "Eh. Whatever. It's not like I need to buy food, pay rent or some s**t anymore." She shoved her cards back on the deck and leaned back, staring at the ceiling. "Ugh. Wish I could see the sky in here." She wanted to be where stars were visible, because they made her feel more alive then anything else, lately. She looked back down, and shrugged again. "Meh, the idea of dealing with some one almost as unaware of what the ******** is going on makes me feel like a complete disaster waiting to happen. But eh if it happens, it happens I guess."

The bet thing was true, and he doubted she had anything he was too interested in having anyway considering how long she'd been out of her pod, so Rhys shrugged and started dealing out a game of Gin Rummy. They didn't need bets and it was easy enough to play casually.
"That was all of us at one point," he said as he fiddled with the cards in his hand. "Can't imagine how the first hunters felt when all of this started." He'd never actually given the history of Deus too much thought; they existed for a reason, obviously, and that reason he'd seen and sliced through and ran from first-hand. The trainee hunter glanced over at the screens to check and make sure that nothing was happening, then looked back over at the newbie.
"And if you wanna see stars the best views are from the cliffs by the beach. Don't go alone, and definitely not right now. There's an issue with the weather and stuff coming up from the beach that wanna kill anything that moves."

Seren smiled a thank you at him for switching games, even if she was crap at Gin, because it at least gave her something that felt safe to play. She examined the set of cards in her hand, thoughtfully, then drew a card, placing an ace in the discard pile. "Well yeah, I am sure... I just, dunno. Don't want to be responsible for ******** up some one else's new start, I guess?" She made a face at the idea of being responsible for that. "It's one thing to go fight things... Once I have a ******** clue HOW beyond 'the sharp part is used to slice off the soft bits,' that is. I can do that, because it's more about protecting the lives of others. Being responsible for helping some one get started?" She shook her head, and stared at her cards. "Meh. Well hunters have been doing this for some time, so I suppose it works out somehow." Her gaze lifted back up to focus directly on him as he spoke about the cliffs. Her eyes went wide, then she looked disappointed at the part about the weather and the Murderous Things. "Damn. Hope that gets cleared up soon, because there's nothing better then being able to spend a night just staring at what's out there."

He drew a card of his own and dropped another ace, then absently gave another shrug. "I guess it's a good sign that you're worried about your potential teammates. Me, I kinda worried about my own a** first. Can't save someone drowning if I don't know how to swim, know what I mean?" Which was probably why she was so concerned with training, but from what she was saying it sounded like she was just worried about what other people might say about her on the field.
"Eh, someone'll call a meeting and we'll figure it out. I'm just happy to be housed in the dorms. People living in town have it real rough right now with all the damn rain."

"I guess? If I go down, I go down. Better I not, because it's one more fighter against the ********, but if I do, I intend it to be doing something useful." She clearly wasn't that worried about the possibility, sort of like she accepted it as inevitable, so why not do something useful in the meantime? She shrugged. "But I'll be more effective doing things to stop Them if I know. So training and fighting, those are my immediate priorities." She smiled a little, coldly. "Then I can be useful in helping cut back on some of the mess." "I can only imagine. I honestly wondered if it normally rained this much. It's good to know this isn't the standard." She continued play, and eventually lost to him, but took it in good humor. When their Pod Duty shift was over, she gave him a friendly enough smile. "See ya round, Rhys. Thanks for making Pod Duty not interminably boring."

He gave it a bit of thought, then nodded. "That's pretty fair."
And the night went on in a much more tolerable manner now that he had company. Zephira spent the time waxing poetic about something he didn't care about, but his conversation with Seren over a number of card games thankfully drowned most of that out. By the end of their shift he was ready to go down for a nice, long nap--mostly to shut Zephira up because she literally was still going.
"You, too. 'Ey, if you ever need a sparring partner or someone to run the courses with, hit me up." And he was off.
In the distance though, she and anyone else in the immediate area would have likely heard him yell a resounding "shut the ******** up" at nobody in particular.
