The pale blue soquili stood at the top of a sand dune. Some dune grasses grew around her paws and were scattered here and there across the sand. She was the guardian of these parts. Protector, she guarded them carefully and woe the wrath that fell upon any who tried to despoil these lovely hills.
Pale blue glowing eyes turned slowly toward the ocean that battered against the shore not far. She could faintly hear the break of the waves from where she stood now. For some distance into the water was also under her protection. Meredith was grateful for her strong paws in the endlessly shifting dunes, and her powerful tail that easily propelled her through the pounding surf. Despite being a lonely life, she was content.
Until she caught an ignorant soquili or human doing harm to the fragile ecosystem. That she would not tolerate. Ignorance was quickly torn away, or the offending party was promptly escorted away. Her eyes turned back to scanning the dunes. All seemed quiet today.

Vadisian drifted in clear blue water, the stark darkness of his pelt all too apparent this close to the surface. Even before he poked his head up from the waves, he stuck out like a sore thumb in all this vibrant color. He was far more used to deeper waters, where shadows claimed the kind of color that surrounded him just now. The rippling white of the sun on the surface of the water; reeds that danced lazy, verdant circles through the surf. The bank was sandier than he might expect, pale and muted, leeching dusty particles into the current.
Wasn't all that bad, all things considered. He should consider coming out in the light of day more often.
The figure not far from Vad caught his eye, forcing the stallion's head into an almost comical double-take. He'd have to, especially if the sunlight drew out lovely creatures like that. The Kelpie was immediately interested in one such as himself - surely it wasn't unusual to be? Particularly when she was so very pale. So brilliantly colored. A shining gem, when he was used to nothing but shadows. "Morning!" Called the dark male by way of greeting, hoping his genial tenor would carry the space between them. The crests along his jaw and between his brows furled as well, attempting to seem as nonthreatening as possible. He'd have to be careful of that, however - being anything less than the "big, scary monster in the depths" wasn't something he was used to.

A second check of the hills proved nothing was moving much, except the grasses swayed in the never ending breeze off the ocean. She must have been staring at the dunes far longer than she'd though, for when she turned back toward the ocean there was an unusual dark shape in the water that hadn't been there the last time she'd looked. Meredith frowned as she watched it. The dark shape poked a head out of the water and a body followed. The mare realized it must be another kelpie.
She watched the stark black stallion make his way up onto the sand. Meredith eyed him critically as if she expected him to start messing up the landscape. Instead she got a friendly greeting. That wasn't something she'd expected. She let her tail swish as she eyed him over. He was quite interesting to look at.
"Morning, I suppose." The mare wondered what had brought him ashore.

He liked to think that there was a kind of grace in the way he pulled himself out of the water. Normally, there might have been: Vadisian was content to ignore the way his hooves slipped in the sand, or the water the fins on his legs slopped over the bank. As an afterthought, he tightened those against his legs as well.
"You suppose?" Vad shook his head briefly, casting droplets like marbles from his sleek pelt. His eyes returned to hers and an easy grin split sharp features. "I take it you don't get many visitors." That look she gave him at first certainly made it seem so. Like she expected him to...what? Track something nasty onto the beach? The stallion spent most of his time in water. He was rather proud of his cleanliness as a result, thank-you-very-much.
But hey. It was no big thing. As he'd thought, if she didn't get other Soq around that often, how would she know what to expect from them? He answered her swishing tail with his own, though he took care to downplay the stinger that tipped its end. Didn't want to give her a reason to think badly of him, right? Especially if she was prone to already.

She glanced toward the sky, "it is almost noon, therefore it wouldn't be morning anymore now would it?" Meredith snorted at the mention of visitors. "I get plenty of visitors. Most of them idiots!" Her lips quirked in amusement and she ruffled the fins along her shoulders. He didn't look like he was causing trouble at the moment, so she'd better be polite.
"Welcome to my shores. My name is Meredith, and I am the guardian here. Stay as long as you like, provided you don't disrupt the fragile balance of these lands." She gave an elegant bow with her introduction. "So what brings you ashore?"

"Is it really?" Vad squinted upwards, head cocked to one side as he tried to take in the position of the sun. It was awfully high overhead for the early morn. He couldn't handle the sight for long, however, and soon returned his gaze to the strange mare with another shake. Those dark eyes were a little blearier for having left her, and blinked a few times against the light. "You'll have to forgive me then. Spend most of your time swimmin' the deep seas, you forget the nuances of day." It all melded together into one Big Bright Shiney Time after awhile, anyway. Though, did that mean mornings were even more brilliant than he remembered?
As she continued, however, the brusque attitude began to make sense. Plagued by jerks, eh? "I can sympathize," he replied, the corners of his smile turning wry. "In that case, I'll be pleased to make your acquaintance, Meredith - and hopefully, prove to be a better quality of visitor. I'm Vadisian." The stallion extended an elegant leg, sinking into a bow to answer her own. His fins relaxed as he did, unfurling slightly. "You can call me Vad, if you prefer.
"I'm just a wayfarer, you know. Traveling here, there, anywhere at all. The fickle current just happened to bring me to your shore, I suppose." He grinned cheekily. "I hope I'm not interrupting whatever you happen to be watching over." Some ceremony, perhaps...? He'd hardly noticed any castles or hoards of treasure about when he'd arrived - but then, he hadn't exactly scoured the joint. Yet, she surely had to be guarding something more than sand and a bit of sea.
