 Sugar Maple walked the halls of the school looking for a quiet place to read her book, she was reading Jacklyn and the bean stalk the tale of a little imp who was very poor and their adventures. Seeking out the singing golden nuzebat, it was then that Sugar heard what sounded like music or singing coming from one of the classrooms. Sugar peeked into the room she didn't say anything she didn't want to scare the freshling who was singing in the room. She wondered if their song was magical it was very pretty to hear and Sugar liked it a lot.

Eloise had run through her scales twice before starting on the new song she had made up. It was a fun one. At least, she thought it was a fun one, and she though it complimented her vocal range quite perfectly. But…of course it had, she had written it.
The song finally came to an end and the little elf flopped backwards into a chair, though glanced over towards the door which hadn’t been open when she had started singing, she always made sure to keep the doors closed, lest she get into trouble for not being where the attendants could look after her better. But…someone was watching her! And it was another freshling like herself.
“Oh! Hi! You can come in if you want! Did you listen to my song? What did you think? I wrote it myself!” She removed herself from the chair and scampered over towards the door. “I’m Eloise. I’m going to be a famous singer one day, at least…that’s what I keep telling people. I figure if I keep saying it, one day it’ll be true!”
It was a pretty good rule of thumb, at least so far as she thought. “What’s your name? I have more songs I can sing, so if you wanna listen to me practice, I would love that!”

Sugar Maple blushed at being caught she tried to duck back behind the door to see if the other freshling might not have really seen her. She heard their voice then so she knew she had been caught. "Umm hi." Sugar said softly "Uhh are you sure? I didn't mean to disturb you." Sugar nodded when the other freshling asked if she had been listening. "Umm yes you reminded me of the magic golden nuzebat in my book. Your song is very pretty." Sugar blushed again. She wasn't very good at social situations. "Umm I'm Sugar Maple, and uhh I don't know what I want to be when I grow up, but I like books and reading." Sugar smiled a little at Eloise confidence. "Your very good, I bet you will be a famous singer one day." Sugar wasn't sure if she should repeat herself since she already said her name shortly after Eloise said her. She answered the invitation with. "Umm are you sure I won't bother you??"

Eloise nodded her head excitedly. “Of course I’m sure. I love it when people come and listen to me singing! Normally I look for someone to come and listen to me, but today nobody was around…you’re the first person who my music has ever drawn in! I think that’s a really good sign, maybe it means I’m already starting to be famous without knowing it!”
Her eyes sparkled with excitement. “It’s really, really nice to meet you, Sugar Maple! I…I like looking at pictures in books, but I’m not…I’m not really a fan of reading or classes…I’m actually just really excited to be older so I can take better classes like music! I want to take music classes so badly…and I wish they would let freshlings join in on the classes…I could do so good I bet! I’m going to go to Grendel when I graduate here and it’s just…”
She sighed happily, looking towards the window. “It’s just going to be awesome!” After a moment, the Elf grinned again. “I have another song I’m working on, if you wanna hear that one! I’m working on writing it all by myself!” It was always important to stress that. If she stressed that...it sounded more impressive...and if it wasn't a good song...well. She was only a Freshling, after all!

Sugar Maple sat down quietly to listen to Eloise sing, she wasn't sure what else to do she didn't want to be rude after all. Sugar smiled she liked that Eloise was happy, she didn't feel the need to say anything else at the moment. Sugar was fine with letting Eliose do all the talking at the moment. She nodded when Eloise said it was nice to meet her and maybe when Eloise ran out of breath Sugar would find the confidence to try to add something in but Sugar didn't want to interrupt. Sugar nodded without saying anything she was ready to listen to the song that Eloise had been working on. Sugar Maple wasn't bothered that she didn't feel that it was the right time to say anything it was ok.

Clearing her throat, Eloise drew in a breath and went through the other song she had been working on, it was quite pretty, but there were a few lyrics that didn’t quite mesh, as well as some of the notes weren’t quite perfect. Yet. But, that was why people practiced!
When she was finished, the Elf smiled sheepishly and looked over at her new friend and wonderful audience with a little grin. “Well? What did you think? I know it needs work, but I’m honestly curious about your opinion…so if there’s anything you think that I should change, don’t hold back with your suggestions okay? I want this song to be amazing when it’s done!”
She watched Sugar Maple eagerly, waiting to see what the verdict was going to be.

Sugar Maple smiled sweetly and she clapped her hands when Eloise finished her song, even if it was terrible Sugar would have said she liked it but luckily she didn't have to lie to make the other freshling feel better the song had been lovely. "It was lovely you are very good at singing." She said her tone honest and heart felt. Sugar thought a moment "Get a cute sparkly dress so you can look pretty while you're singing?" She suggested, she didn't know anything about music to suggest anything about pitch or scales. "So what else do you like to do?" Sugar asked softly.

Eloise glowed with the praise, her whole face lighting up with a smile. Sugar Maple was right, of course. She needed fun clothes if she was going to get noticed and famous one day but…well. Not everyone knew a lot about music, so she couldn’t fault the other girl for not having real constructive criticism. If she were honest with herself, she would have been really surprised if she had, they were just freshlings after all!
“What…what else do I like to do?” She blinked, this wasn’t a question she was used to and quite honestly, she wasn’t really sure that she even had an answer. “I um…”
The elf crossed her arms, face scrunched up in thought. “You know, I’m not actually really sure. I just…sing. I just kind of figured…that if I was good at that, I wouldn’t really need anything else, you know? What…what do you like to do?” Normally…she didn’t actually care what other people said but…for once…
She was curious.

Sugar Maple smiled she was happy that she had made the other freshling happy with her compliment, though it was easy to give since it was an honest compliment, not a false one. Sugar thought a moment and then said "Well I like to read, I like drawing, I tried playing soccer once I wasn't very good at it though. I think it's good to try new things to see what else you might like, next I think I might want to try gardening since I'm part dryad I hope I will be good at it." Sugar said softly. She looked around the room and spotted a small chalk board on the wall. Sugar Maple picked up a piece of chalk and drew a few music notes and flowers.

Eloise stared at the hybrid, confusion evident on her face. The girl had so many ideas…so many things she could try to be good at and…
And all Eloise had was singing…but…that was all she had wanted…right? To sing and to be a star and to make people feel happy and excited when she was around?
She watched as the other freshling began to draw on the blackboard, and realized that drawing was something that did look like fun…and reading…she really didn’t like reading, it was so quiet and boring…but…but others found it fun.
“I um…Sugar Maple, I think I’m going to go back to my room if that’s okay…I’m not really feeling so good all of the sudden and I think I might take a nap…” The Elf kept her eyes on the hybrids drawings and gave a tiny smile. “It was really nice to meet you, and I would like to be friends if that’s okay with you…maybe next time we hang out…you could teach me how you draw flowers so well?”
It’s good to try new things and see what else you might like…well. Fine. Then she would…but…
She hoped that the thing she still liked best was singing or else she wouldn’t know what else to do.
