Through some freak of scheduling that day Lysander found himself on duty in a different part of the labs than Roswell. This didn't bode well at all for the success of the task. He'd been given the duty of cleaning up one of the rooms. Mercifully he had spotted a familiar name on the list and rather than beginning his task, he sat on one of the tables instead.

When Merric arrived his expression lit up. "How are you at cleaning?" he asked.

Merric was also on duty, but was mostly just trying to figure out how things even worked around here. He'd tried, in vain, to understand the inner workings of Deus, but so far most of his attempts had just resulted in a lot of paperwork and more unanswered questions.

But at least the duty rosters were simple enough. And at least he had Lysander to talk to on this particular assignment, even if the first words out of Lysander's mouth were a question that had Merric slowing his steps, brows raising in mild bemusement.

"Depends," he said, considering. "I used to have to clean up my lab, but I didn't have much in my apartment that needed cleaning."

Or really anything. Merric said, "Why do you ask?"

"Because today you get to show me how well you can do it!" he said brightly, making a grand gesture at the room as a whole. He'd at least come dressed more plainly than usual, his shirt loosened informally at the collar. He seemed in a good mood anyway. "Because I'm pretty useless and Roswell isn't here!"

"It's always so nice to have someone competent. Today we get to clean up an actual lab, you have experience!" He'd seen a few labs in his time, mostly belonging to his family but as a general rule the people there all very much preferred it if he didn't touch anything and immediately gave up explaining things when he reverted to the blank flat look he typically did when people veered into difficult subjects.

Merric was slowly coming to understand that Lysander without Roswell was sort of like a sunflower without a stem. Or vice versa, really. They seemed inseparable at best, which meant that being around either one of them without the other felt strangely bizarre.

But still. He liked both of them, and he liked talking to them separately as well, because in spite of that, they were not one singular unit. Merric gave the room that Lysander was gesturing at a look, eyebrows still raised. He himself was dressed as nicely as he ever was, except with a pair of suspenders barely visible under the pale pink vest.

Old habits were hard to break. Plus he only had so many clothes as it was.

"Are we supposed to just clean it or are we doing any experiments, do you know?" Merric asked, reaching to unfasten one of the buttons at his wrist and folding his shirtsleeves up to his elbows. "I mean, I do have experience in cleaning laboratories, yes."

He glanced around again. "Are there any cleaning supplies..?"

Lysander gave Merric a distant sort of look, like a horse might give someone who asked it if it understood calculus. "Cleaning supplies." he repeated, as if saying it out loud would make them somehow appear. "Err." Roswell certainly had some, he usually materialised in a pair of gloves with a bucket of supplies but Lysander didn't usually question where they actually came from. There were probably cupboards for that sort of thing, staffed by janitors and other nocturnal cleaning creatures. It wasn't the world for Lysander.

"I think its mostly cleaning, but no one is going to stop you if you want to mess with things, I won't tell anyone for one thing, I don't even know who you are supposed to tell."

He shrugged. "I'm sure whatever you do, you will do very well."

Merric squinted at Lysander for a long moment, as though trying to figure out if he was actually serious or not, but something told him that he was, and therefore, this was relatively unsurprising. Roswell wasn't really a servant, but he was a loyal assistant, after all.

"Well," said Merric, as he finished rolling up his other sleeve. "I'm sure there's some around here somewhere. Maybe in one of the cabinets..?"

He padded towards the nearest one and tugged it open to reveal a series of test tubes and glass holding cases, but no actual cleaning supplies. The test tubes were unfortunately empty, and Merric closed the door and moved to the next cabinet, where he found, again, no cleaning supplies, but instead a stack of paperwork that someone had probably shoved in there to hide.

Merric took it out, set it on one of the tables to peruse later, and went to the next cabinet.

"Are you doing all right, since the whole..." Merric waved a hand. "Island...thing?"

Lysander watched Merric work with the avid and guilt free interest of someone who was used to doing a lot of observing other people working hard. "Probably." he said helpfully. "People must get them from somewhere, and since they have us trainees doing all their dirty work while not paying us a single bean in return, they probably like, have a little storage area."

He watched the other man look through cupboards and seemed to deign fit to slide open a drawer in the desk he was sitting on. All that was in it a box of pipettes, he didn't know what they were for. "Could you clean something with these?" he asked vaguely.

"And er. Yes I've been fine, it just felt as unreal as everything else in this place, like an unfinished quest line more than anything else. The truth ring was unpleasant and fake. It didn't work, obviously, though for the sake of my vanity I'm going to take your comments on me as honest and true."

He adjusted his glasses and looked him over. "But my comments were not true, exaggerated by the magic of the thing."

He decadently lay back on the tabletop, letting one long leg dangle off the side to the floor. "Oh it was almost as awful as being here."

The next cabinet contained beakers, all of which were also empty. Merric frowned at them, then reached and plucked one out, turning it over in his hands to examine it. "I would say they're likely not pulled from thin air, except, well..." He made a vague gesture with his free hand. "Things have a way of confusing me here."

An understatement. Merric put the beaker back into the cabinet, then crouched to look in one of the lower ones, glancing over his shoulder at what Lysander was gesturing at.

A small smile tugged at his lips. "Not really, unless I wanted to spend hours and hours cleaning inch by inch," he said, getting to his feet again with a small wince. He opened a drawer and found some cloths that were clearly meant to be used for wiping down things, but nothing else. Merric grabbed several of them.

"Oh, yes, the truth ring," he said, feeling a distinct sense of muffled outrage still at the thought of it. He twisted around to give Lysander an exasperated look and found him lounging on one of the tables, Merric's face heating ever so slightly.

He had no answer to that, because it was undeniably true, and yet he wasn't about to admit that a second time, for the sake of his own diminishing pride. "That ring seemed to...I mean obviously it was a fake," he added, just because Lysander seemed to need reassurance on this matter. "It was like one of those palm readers who like to pretend they know what they're doing but it's really just all a show."

Merric slid open another drawer. "Roswell's a good assistant, though."

Lysander sighed. "I don't know why they put me in this group or whatever. Tree. I mean, I like trees, don't get me wrong, I have a lot of very strong feelings about nature as a whole and our place in it. But I've not see anything at all to do with nature here, it's all so unnatural in fact." He wasn't really a man of science, science took a certain level of mental effort that he wasn't willing to exert most of the time, usually when people talked he zoned out and let Roswell tell him the parts that were actually important. On his own he had to listen and constantly felt like he was giving away too much about himself. "It's really confusing, on the whole. I don't understand what they stand to gain from us, unless somewhere out there is a ransom to my family for my safe return."

After all if there was something many of the people he found friendly and real in this place had in common they were either very rich or very smart.

"It was definitely fake. There's no such thing as a truth ring and if there was I would have said other things out of it, I know for a fact. It's an approximation or something like it."

He sighed. "Mm, yes. He is. I had a lot of applications, but on that day in that place, something about him really stood out to me. He's something special. Has a brother too, you know, a twin. I sometimes wonder what it'd be like to have two personal assistants, or if that would be too greedy."
PostPosted: Mon Jul 24, 2017 5:20 pm

"You're a businessman," said Merric, with a nod of understanding. "Not a scientist. But I also agree that I don't really understand where they're going with this whole...tree thing, is it meant to be nature or is it meant to be science? So far it's leaning towards the latter, but nothing here is clear."

He pulled open another drawer, and when that yielded nothing, knelt once more to look in the cabinets beneath, Merric making a small noise of satisfaction. He pulled out a spray bottle of all purpose cleaner, and then a second spray bottle of Windex, straightening and setting both of them on the table.

"A ring that compels others to tell the truth sounds like something out of a comic book," Merric said. A part of him - the more irrational part of him - wanted to ask about whether or not what Roswell had said about his feelings for Lysander were true, but he wisely kept his mouth shut. It seemed a bad idea.

"He's an extremely competent man," said Merric, smiling as he reached for one of the cloths. The smile shifted to a slightly thoughtful expression. "I didn't realize it was a twin; I remember him briefly mentioning that he had a brother, however. Are they similar?"

"If I was to guess it's probably Norse. Pagan history fascinates me and if I was to assume its to do with Yggdrasil most likely." It was one of those few things like horses that seemed to hold his attention. "Bit of an insult to use here though anyway, I've not seen much knowledge here since I got here, just a lot of enslavement." He sighed. "Yggdrasil was a doorway to worlds though, maybe they are just mocking us poor captive saps."

"And yeah they seem to have a lot of strange artifacts and things here and to genuinely believe in their function. I'm not used to that either honestly. I mean, I believe in the power of magick but it is supposed to be earned, supposed to be specific, not to be disrespected as a... party trick." He looked a little grim about that. " The only issue I have with telling myself it is all a trick or manipulation is that it would mean Roswell humiliated me on purpose which I don't think he'd do." He sighed. "I don't know what to think of anything."

He didn't move to help but did smile brightly at the supplies and Merric

"And about his brother, not identical." He said. "And they are very different people that is for certain, though sometimes you can see the similarities. Fred's always been polite to me. I don't think they get along though, some sort of history. From er, before he worked for me. I tried not to ask.

He had heard of Yggdrasil, but Merric hadn't delved too deeply into that realm of things just yet. It reminded him of what Lysander had said before, about being a witch, or something about magick versus magic, and also that he had meant to ask about this and hadn't had a chance to yet.

"If they're mocking us, it's in poor taste," Merric murmured with a sigh. "I don't care about the whole..." He waved a hand and its ensuing cloth. "You know, the whole show of it all. Like we're all just there for them to play mind games with. It's a little insulting."

Merric gave a halfhearted swipe of the cloth at the table, frowning a little as he glanced over at Lysander. He couldn't pretend to understand the relationship between him and Roswell yet; but he did like both of them a great deal. It seemed very out of character for it to be deliberate.

Maybe he was overthinking. Or too curious for his own good.

"He's...extremely loyal to you, and honestly, he doesn't seem the type to deliberately humiliate you. Maybe it was just the pressure of the situation, or perhaps the atmosphere of the crowd, but..."

Merric curled the cloth over his fingers, trailing off. It felt wrong to ask about Roswell's past when it was not directly to the man himself, especially considering that Roswell clearly had not meant to reveal his somewhat sordid history whatsoever. The curiosity was still there, though Merric tried to work around it.

"He didn't seem...to want to mention him much," he said, and then, after a moment, "I don't really get along with my brother, either."

Lysander liked Merric more and more the longer the other man didn't try to make him do anything. He was used to people whining and nagging at him as if his existence was somehow a problem. It put him a little more at ease. "Yep. They are definitely toying with us, and I'm not going to stand for it, it's why we need allies against this and a plan to get off the island."

Roswell was certainly complicated but the idea of even a single crack in the other man's loyalty was distressing to the extreme. "I'm not sure." he said. "He never mentions himself to anyone, myself included. Anything I know I found out through my own investigations. But I need to trust him, I don't do well being suspicious of people. It just upsets me."

He plucked one of the pipettes out of the drawer and gave it a little squeeze, casting a slightly languid look at Merric. "What was your brother like?" he asked. "I have a brother and a sister. My brother is boring and my sister is kiiiind of a b***h."

It hadn't really registered to Merric that Lysander was not actually, in fact, cleaning; in all honesty, it seemed entirely normal that he wasn't, therefore this fact had slipped from his mind, a relatively mundane notion such as the sky is blue and pandas were the best creature on earth.

"Well, you'll have me as an ally, for that matter," said Merric, smiling a little as he lifted a beaker to wipe absentmindedly at it, though the movements were practiced, clearly regular to him. "You and Roswell both. We'll figure something out, I'm sure of it."

He lifted the beaker and examined it, catching Lysander's slightly distressed gaze before he lowered it once more. Merric nudged his glasses a little higher up his nose with the back of his hand and said, "Well, perhaps it was just...a moment of temporary insanity, or something. He's a good man, and trustworthy, from what I've seen."

Granted, he hadn't seen much, but he'd seen...well, he'd seen things he still wasn't even sure about, but that was beside the point. Merric eyed the pipette in Lysander's hand, the question, while not exactly unexpected, making his chest tighten a little.

"He's..." Merric trailed off, fingers slowing on the beaker and his wiping gestures. He was struggling to find the right words, ones that did not make him feel like an idiot. "...a rebel, of a sort. He's younger than I am, but we never really got along well at all."

He gave a little shrug, trying to act nonchalant, though the persistent humiliation always burned through his veins at the very idea of Barron. "He was the golden child, I suppose."

"Great, you seem the kind of man I can count on." And he meant it, Lysander felt like he was a good judge of character and trusted people who felt like truly good people. Merric seemed like one of them, and in the year which hadn't been a year at all they'd gotten to know one another a little better. The haze of the dream had lost the details but he knew the other man had been loyal and true.

"The younger ones are always the ones you need to look out for." he said a little wistfully. "I suppose in my family I was the rebel. Clive is the one my father said he'd give the company to. He's my younger brother. I was always too weird for my father." He smirked "Il ne m'a pas aimé"

Stretching he gave Merric an upside down look from the table. "Family are generally a bit taxing. I bet you are the better sibling. Just takes someone to notice that you are."
