He wasn't late exactly; but it was now 12:06, and Nathaniel had promised to be at Hart's by 12:00 on the dot, which meant that, by Nathaniel's own standards, he was late. He didn't like showing up late to anything, even if it was just a friend's house.
He brushed dirt from the leg of his jeans and knocked at Hart's door, slightly out of breath.

Hartley hadn't forgotten he was expecting company but he hadn't exactly been keeping track of the exact time either. So the fact that Nathaniel was late didn't really register when he heard the knock. He'd been out on his balcony getting some cherry tomatoes to go with his lunch and hopped up when he heard the door. Smiling as he checked the peep-hole he tugged the door open. "Hey, perfect timing. I was just getting together stuff for a salad." He smiled as he held the door open for his friend. "You want one too? Or did you eat something already?"

Nathaniel, carrying a satchel bag slung over one shoulder and a plastic grocery bag in the other, gave Hartley a relieved look as the door was swung open.
"Sorry I'm a li'l bit late, my bike had a flat tire," he said, sounding slightly out of breath as he stepped inside. "Uh, and if you're already makin' one, then I wouldn' say no to a salad. I brought some supplies for later, some new plants for y'to check out."
Nathaniel held up one of the bags, smiling. "How are you?"

"I didn't register you were running late honestly." He smiled as he headed back into the kitchen. "You know I can't keep track of time enough to pay attention to a few minutes. Besides I was outside getting tomatoes since I finally have some thanks to you." He picked one up to show it off before snagging a knife so he could cut them up. He had a large bowl full of the beginnings of a salad which he added the tomatoes to once they were sliced. He tossed in a few more things and finally some croutons before tossing everything together with a light dressing and splitting it into two bowels. "What sort of plants did you bring? Something I'll have a harder time killing I hope?" He took the bowls over to the small table so they could eat.

He followed Hartley into the kitchen, Nathaniel setting the plastic grocery bag full of supplies down onto one of the chairs. Reaching for the strap of his satchel, he pushed it over his head and then let it slide to the floor, resting against the legs of the same chair.
"Those look great," said Nathaniel, eyeing the tomato with genuine pleasure. "I haven't been able t'keep tomatoes where I am, but I've been growin' some herbs and things pretty well. I have a whole pot of basil now, and some cacti too, of course."
He glanced around, then picked up the plastic bag again, sat down in the seat himself, and set the bag on the table this time, Nathaniel tugging it down so he could reach inside.
"I have some petunias, just for pretty things," he said, lifting one out and setting it carefully beside the bag. "I picked up some seeds for y'too, there's a lot of vegetables here. N' I brought you one of my basil plants, and also a mint plant, too, it smells real nice, but I wouldn't put it too close to anythin', otherwise everythin'll be smellin' like mint," Nathaniel added, with a laugh. "It's pretty strong stuff."

"I don't know how I've managed to keep them alive other than having your help but it's nice to be able to have fresh ones around all the time. Saves on having to buy containers of them." He still bought them when he needed larger amounts but making lunch and being able to pluck just as many as he needed was great. He set their lunches down before dropping into a seat and leaning over to smell the flowers. "Do those have to stay outside or can I put them in the window? Will they get enough light?" He'd like to have some of the petunias inside if he could just for color. "Cacti are definitely going on my desk. I got a new big pot ... most like a mini bed, for veggies so hopefully I can actually grow some of them." The mint would be nice too. He did like the way it smelled and he could use it for baking stuff.

"You're doin' jus' fine, I think," said Nathaniel encouragingly, flashing Hart a smile over at the counter. "Fresh ingredients are better for things, anyway. I just wish I had a lawn so that I could have m'own garden, but so far I haven't been able to find a place, or even somethin' with a balcony."
Instead he got a little studio something or other. Nathaniel reached for a fork as Hart came to sit across from him, poking at the salad with relish. "Some should be by the window, so they can have sunlight, but the cacti and such probably don' need too much."
He took a bite of salad, which was delicious, and then another before answering again. "A mini bed sounds great. I don't have enough room with all of my things for m'own, so I'll just have to come here and see how yours are doin'. This is real good, by the way," Nathaniel added, gesturing at his salad with his fork. "Delicious."

"I'm only doing fine because you're helping me so much, i am awful with plants for some reason." Hartley knew that, for whatever reason, he had no luck with plants but having Nathaniel helping him out was wonderful. It meant he had some plants and the apartment was green and it felt wonderful to have some. He was forever thankful that Nate agreed to help him. He nibbled on his salad, glad the other man liked it. "If you're looking for something else maybe I could help? I can poke though website or something and maybe we can find you a nice place with some gardening room? Not that i'm going to complain about you being here though." He liked having friends around and he knew Afton liked it that he didnt' spend all his time with him. Making friends was supposed to be a good thing.

He appreciated the idea that he'd been useful, since Nathaniel was, for the most part, someone who thrived off of the acknowledgement that he had done well. He didn't need the verification, but it was nice to hear all the same; and it did make him more prone to helping more.
Nathaniel forked a bite of salad into his mouth and chewed thoughtfully. "That'd honestly be great," he admitted, trying not to think about how much he yearned for a place that was just exactly what Hart was describing. It wasn't necessary for him to have something enormous, but it would be nice, he thought wistfully, if he could have something even a smidge larger, with a nice, open sun room.
"Well, I mean, I can still come here too," said Nathaniel with a smile. "If I had somewhere else t'work, that'd just be icin' on the cake n' all."
