They seem impressionable and willing to start a cult for you, if only out of boredom while their moms participate in their beachside bookclub. The message came when Kyle least expected it. A beach mission with an Intermediate or Full Hunter of his choice to provide support should he run into any hostiles while keeping an eye out for any odd incidents to report back to Deus. It made sense of course that he would ask Matt to join him. The older Moon hunter was strong, dependable and looked absolutely droolworthy in the pair of swim pants that he had changed into for the lifeguard duty that was to be their cover for the day.
After changing into a pair of red swim shorts himself, Kyle had stood beside Matt in front of the full-length mirror in the changing room gaping, momentarily distracted from the fact that he was about to run the entire mission all by himself. "So how's a promotion mission supposed to be different from the usual ones? Is it especially dangerous or something?"

“Depends, sometimes they go off without a hitch, sometimes they don’t end so well and the hunter has to go on a different mission.” For once Matt wasn’t dressed in a suit, instead he had changed into a pair of black wet suit pants with a purple stripe going down the side. Near the middle of his chest was the ragged edge scar, it had a dull red now but still an ugly look to it. “I did almost the same sort of promotion for mine, it isn’t that hard as long as you remember to pay attention to what you are suppose to be doing and not day dreaming.” Unlike Kyle, Matt didn’t bother to look at himself in the mirror instead he took a minute to braid his hair back and grabbed the rest of the gear they would need in their cover as a lifeguard. Even though it had been a few years he still hated to look at the mark. “Come on we should get started.”

"I see. Was your promotion mission at this beach too?"
Kyle had always wondered about the scar on Matt's chest. To the best of his knowledge based on the amount of time he had spent with the infirmary, it didn't look like it was part of any life-saving medical intervention so the Sun figured that it was probably inflicted during a fight. He would ask about it one day if Matt was willing to talk about it of course. But now was obviously not the time and place for that.
"Alright. Let's do this then."

Alright. So far so good. Everyone's staying within the safe zones that were demarcated by the coloured buoys and flags on the beach. There was absolutely nothing that Kyle had to worry about as a stand-in lifeguard for the day right now other than him being possibly burnt to a crisp because, of all the things that he had to forget despite knowing that he was going to spend most of the day under the sun, he had forgotten to put on some sunblock.
... wait a minute. Did he remember to bring some even?
< You didn't. >
Semaj helpfully volunteered the information in his mind which made him sigh.
< You need to relax. You can do this. Both Matt and I know that. Don't let your nerves get in the way of the mission and you'll be fine. >
The incubus was right. Kyle closed his eyes briefly and nodded. He can do this and he will see it through to the end.
Now that the self motivational moment was over and done with, he opened his eyes to look around him and realized that a mob of little children had gathered excitedly around his high chair.
"The King has awakened! All hail King... um... what's your name all powerful King?" A little girl called out to him with a smile.
A... King? What exactly did he do and since when did he amass such a group of... loyal followers? Kyle lifted a hand to scratch the side of his head as he wondered if he ought to play along or try to dissuade them from continuing this game of theirs.
"Um... Kinley. My name is Kinley."
"All hail King Kinley, the almighty ruler of this beach!"
Ah well. He supposed that there was no harm in playing along for now.

“No but similar.” He didn’t offer any other information up about it, there was no telling if the same sort of things he saw would show up even on this piece of beach but he wasn’t too worried about any of it. Instead Matt followed him out before diverging from him to walk along the area keeping an eye out for anything else that would happen along the beach.
---
So far so good, nothing really seemed to be amiss and despite the occasional “omg look away or I’ll be blinded” everything seemed rather ordinary to him. Heading back to the lifeguard stand Matt noticed a little herd of tiny humans bunching below Kyle chanting something with the name Kinley. Approaching he gave them all a dark look and started to shoo them away back to their parental units unless they wanted to be tossed into the ocean for the sharks to eat.

Quote: 3. A child on a floaty drifts far out into the water. They're crying loudly and people are panicking and it's your chance to be a hero of the people!
Kyle had admittedly been a little worried that he wouldn't be able to carry out his duty as a lifeguard should something come up while the kids had a field day dancing around his 'throne' and celebrating his birthday, his ascension to the throne and various festivals in King Kinley's honour. Thankfully they immediately dispersed with the arrival of Matt the Death Knight (some loyal subjects they were indeed) and that was the end of his reign over the beach as King Kinley.
Climbing down from the chair to thank Matt for saving him from the mob of little children, Kyle stopped himself when an obviously distressed woman ran over to grab and tug on his arm. "Please come! Quickly before it's too late! My baby got carried by the current far out in the water..." He turned to look at Matt and nodded. "It's ok. I got this." And then he was off, running across the beach with the woman whom he assumed was the child's mother until he reached the other end of the beach where a crowd had already gathered and was fussing over what they ought to do about the child who was on a floaty out at sea and crying at the top of her lungs at being separated from her mother.
Knowing that time was of the essence lest the child got swallowed up by a giant wave and drowned, Kyle quickly jumped into the water and swam free style towards the child, guided by the sound of her crying. As soon as she was within reach, he made a grab for the floaty, kicking as hard and fast as he could in the water so that the current wouldn't drag the both of them further out into the sea. Swimming against the flow of the current wasn't easy but Kyle eventually made it back to the shore with a big smile as the child was reunited with her mother who couldn't thank him enough as the crowd broke out in a cheer over his valiant deed.

Luckily for Matt the kids had scampered off instead of hanging around to bother them any further, he did not relish the idea of having to go through with his threat. Maybe part of his threat, or at least tossing them into the ocean part, legally, he really couldn’t feed them to any sharks (not that he really would). Just as he was about to ask Kyle how his shift had been going and if he had run into anything sort of trouble a woman approached frantically babbling about something, a child? A baby? Whatever it was she was saying between the frightened screaming and tears the younger hunter had understood it out and agreed to help her allowing her to take his arm and lead him away. Which meant now Matt was alone, this time at the lifeguard station in which he promptly took a seat and let the bottom of his sand burnt feet have a rest. It was a chance to sit there and watch the waves roll in one after the other, his mind slowly drifting the noise of screaming kids and chatty parents fade away in the background. The beach, he had never really understood how much he had loved the noise of crashing waves until he had moved away to college. The first few months were hell for him, he couldn’t fall asleep and when he did it was restlessness. It wasn’t until he had driven home for the weekend that Matt had realized that it was the ocean that was missing and for the first time in weeks he had fallen asleep sitting in the bench under the window. Without realizing he woke up with a start, not realizing while he was lost in thought that he had dozed off in the chair. Sitting up Matt looked around for Kyle, to see if the younger hunter was still ok and that things had worked out.

Kyle was surprised when, upon his return to the lifeguard station where he saw Matt last, he found the older hunter dozing in his seat. This was an unexpected yet pleasant finding. It wasn't often that he saw Matt sleeping soundly like this. The Sun reckoned that it was probably the effect that the environment had on the Moon - something that he made a note of in his mind to confirm with Matt another time after the mission was over and done with.
Sitting himself down in the next chair, he quietly watched over both the beach-goers and Matt, glad that all was as well as they could be until the other hunter woke up just in time for them to break for lunch. "Kid on a floaty got pulled out of the safe zone by a current. Got her back to her family in the end so all is well again." He updated Matt on the earlier situation that he attended to with a smile, a hand reaching out to take hold of his and give it a small squeeze. "Are you alright?"

Quote: 3. Terror of the Deep - Several people complain (and several more are all praise) concerning "the topless girl on the rock". Every time you go to look, though, the place they referred to is empty.
It was around mid afternoon when several people started coming to the lifeguard station about a topless girl whom they had sighted on a rock not far from the part of the beach that Kyle had swam out to rescue the child earlier in the day.
"Photo shoot or not, this is a family friendly beach and people should be more considerate towards others' presence!"
"Do you think she lives around here? My friend who came to this beach a week ago also saw her at the same spot."
"It was love at first sight! I wanted to ask her for her name and number but she slipped away into the water as soon as I approached..."
< Ooooh... a topless girl. This we definitely have to see for ourselves. Maybe she'll even do a lap dance if we ask her nicely enough. >
Semaj was understandably excited as was evident in his chuckling and the tongue in cheek comment about the lap dance. Kyle laughed as well and shook his head. The incubus was incorrigible when it came to things like this. It had admittedly taken him a couple of months to get used to this and know that he could count on his partner to be serious when the situation necessitated it.
< Whoa... don't forget that we're out here for a mission so don't get yourself too excited over something like this now. First we need to establish if she is human; next whether she is hostile or friendly then we can decide on the most appropriate course of action to follow up with. >
< Sounds reasonable enough. Could be a lost soul who needs some friendly guidance. Will be a shame killing her if that's the case. >
This was it then. The source of the mysterious incidents that Deus had sent both he and Matt out here for. As soon as they were done with this and being stand-in lifeguards till the end of the day, the both of them could head back to the island to file in the mission report and spend the rest of the evening however they wished.
However, things didn't quite seem to go as Kyle had intended for them to when there was no topless girl to be found at the spots where she was sighted. It was almost as if the mysterious topless girl was making it a personal sport of hers sending both hunters out to various spots on the beach on a wild goose chase.
"What do you think? She can't be a human if she can get from one location to another within such a short span of time. She can't be a ghost either since these sightings are happening in broad daylight. Perhaps it's a maiden from the sea like... The Little Mermaid?"

A blush crawled along Matt’s cheeks as he realized that Kyle was next to him and that he had been there while he had fallen asleep. It wasn’t something he was particularly proud of let alone was it something he should be doing while out on a mission with the younger hunter. Kasi snorted as if amused by the fact that the older was actually ashamed about something as simple as taking a nap. Giving a nod he squeezed Kyle’s hand in return. “At least it ended well, and I’m fine just sort of got lost in thought.” So far the mission hadn’t been too much for either of them, no weird monsters or fights or things that could at some point possibly kill the two of them. It reminded him vaguely of his own being rather easy. They got lunch, some overpriced food at one of the small shack like restaurants that were set up along the edge of the sand. A part of him didn’t want to even attempt the idea of possible food poisoning but it wasn’t likely that they were going to be able to get anything else for a while so they ate and Matt thought over about how different this beach was from the one he grew up on as a kid along with how long had it been since he had returned to it. It was almost scary thinking about how long he had been at Deus and how long it had been since Sara passed. After lunch they headed back to the lifeguard station and despite Matt’s wishes for a peaceful afternoon they found a small crowd had slowly amassed about a woman who was posing nude along the rocks. To him this seemed more like a personal problem of the people then really any sort of a problem for lifeguards to be dealing with and considering half the tans some of them had he suspect they probably laid on a towel topless themselves. After enough complaints they finally made an effort to at least take a look around to see the source of the problem, if just use it as an excuse to escape the constant nagging. Nothing, not that Matt was entirely surprised by the fact that the creature had slipped away after amassing too many fans. “Probably that or some sort of siren, selkie thing that is able to swim in the waters for long periods of time. She’s gone now and I doubt she’ll be back any time soon. It’s too risky with that many people now trying to find her.” Which meant they could finally head back home, file report, and do something a little less dealing with people.

Quote: 2. She is friendly and just wants to talk for awhile. She doesn't understand what's the problem with teasing a few humans at all. It's very lonely and boring where she lives. If you try to convince her to be weaponized, she will agree very easily.
A selkie... huh? Kyle already knew from the books that he read what a mermaid and siren was. Learning as much as they could about the characteristics of the creatures they could potentially come across was important and part of their training as a hunter as it could very well be what tipped the odds in their favour ultimately during a battle or negotiation. He might have read about selkies previously... or not given that he couldn't recall anything about them at all at this point. But no matter - he would just make it a point to look them up as soon as he had some time to self study back on Deus island.
It happened just as both Matt and him were done being stand-in lifeguards for the day and getting ready to head to the portal that would take them back to the island that was their home. A soft singing carried by the wind in a voice that couldn't have come from any human that walked the land from the way it sent shivers down his spine. "You heard that too. Right?" Kyle stopped to check with Matt. The thought of asking the older Moon hunter what they should do next had crossed his mind but the Sun stopped himself when he remembered that this was supposed to be his mission which meant that he was in charge of making the decisions and calling the shots. "Let's go check it out then." He couldn't just turn around and walk away from this without making one last attempt at investigating it now, could he?
The beach was mostly deserted at this time of the day when the sun had set and daylight gradually transitioned to the darkness associated with the night. Tracing the shoreline to one of the spots they investigated earlier in the day, Kyle stopped dead in his tracks when he laid his eyes on the fair-skinned topless girl seated on the rocks who looked exactly like any normal human being if not for the blue-green fish tail where her legs were supposed to be. A mermaid.
< Stop gaping and staring Kyle. It's ruuude... > Semaj wolf-whistled and cackled from a corner of his mind. < ... I'm not..! > Kyle protested at his partner's teasing though it was evidently too late judging by how red his face already was. The mermaid stopped her singing and smiled, amused by the younger Sun hunter's reaction. "I didn't know that there are still humans here at this time of the day."
"We were um... just getting ready to head back when we heard the singing." Kyle shrugged, taking a deep breath and exhaling to try to calm himself down before taking a step towards the creature. "Oh? Who might you be then? You seem... different from the other humans." Tossing a look at Matt, Kyle pondered over his options. Would it be a bad thing, telling her the truth that they were hunters? "I'm Kyle and he's Matt. We're hunters." He watched the mermaid closely as he spoke, ready to jump back and summon Semaj if she suddenly turned hostile against them.
The mermaid frowned. "Hunters? Are you here to kill me? But I didn't do anything wrong... I didn't hurt anyone at all." Kyle quickly shook his head. "No no no. We aren't going to hurt you at all. We came to investigate the reports that came in about a topless girl that was spotted frequently at this beach." The mermaid huffed. "And what's so wrong about that? I don't get why you humans need to cover yourselves up with those fancy clothes and all."
Kyle blinked a few times. Okay. Was he really going to get into an argument with a mermaid about a human's need to cover up to preserve one's modesty and ensure that they did other things other than engage in sex all day and night. < Focus on the mission Kyle. > Semaj interjected dryly though the amusement was evident in his voice at the thought that crossed the Sun's mind. < Okay okay. >
Let's try another approach then. "That's not the issue here Miss..." "Ephyra. My name's Ephyra." Kyle nodded. Her willingness to volunteer her name was a good sign all in all. "Like I've said Ephyra, that's not the issue here. What we're more concerned about is how people are going to react when they realize what you really are." He stopped for a moment to see how Ephyra was taking all that he had said.
"... but it's so boring out here." She whined unhappily. "I fell out with my family and ran away from home a few months ago. It's safe in these parts and I don't have anywhere else to go to..." It was Kyle's turn to frown now. While he could sympathise with Ephyra's circumstances, it still wasn't a good thing for her to linger around the beach where it was only a matter of time till someone realized that she was a mermaid.
< ... there is one other way. > Semaj quietly offered. < Weaponization. She can become one of us. Deus can be her new home. > Kyle licked his lips and sighed. Semaj was right. But how was he supposed to put the notion across to her in a delicate manner?
"You could... consider joining us maybe?" Ephyra blinked a few times at his words. "But how..." It wasn't as if he knew the weaponization process very well himself but he could at least show and tell her about Semaj who was his partner. "Every hunter is paired with a partner when they join our organisation." Picking up the cross necklace that was around his neck between his thumb and index finger, he smiled.
"This is my partner Semaj. He's an incubus and a handful given his obnoxious nature..." The necklace disappeared from around his neck at his beckoning, a pair of shurikens in his hands now which he showed the wide-eyed mermaid. "... but we're in this together. It can be a hazardous job but at least you'll have a home and a hunter partner of your own?"
Returning Semaj to his totem form, he stopped to allow Ephyra some time to think on what he had just showed her. "... ok. It's not like I'm doing anything else with my life out here so I might as well give it a shot." The mermaid smiled. Kyle shot an incredulous look at Matt. Oh my god. Did he really just pull that off?
"Ok. I'll contact my colleagues to make some arrangements. Hang on..."
