Lawr had been given more medication and was sleeping, so Melvin went to get something to eat and returned to sit on a bench outside of his room, leaning his head back and closing his eyes, but finding sleep impossible. When he closed his eyes, the Sahara came to him.
When he opened his eyes, he saw them moving across the floor and curling against the desk in reception. The shadows made him feel small and young.
His eyes followed a slinking centipede curling about the hallway as it dashed out and avoided a pair of shoes headed this way, and Melvin looked up to see Rodney. His expression, already haggard and exhausted, tried to come more to attention, but it slipped out of his grasp and he felt himself slumping in the chair.
"He's sleeping."

Rodney had been avoiding Melvin for the majority of their time together in the house, resenting his presence to the point that someone, who was quite possibly literally Satan, had asked him if he'd wanted to do something about it. Satan had given Rodney his personal address over it.
The opening to hell was, as far as Rodney knew, in Deus's basement.
He couldn't ask Melvin why he was there, but he did peer in to see if Lawrence was visibly harmed or molested.
All he said, however, was an uncomfortable, "Oh...good."

Melvin had been fune with the unspoke agreement of avoiding each. It avoided putting up a fake act that everything was fine. As long as Melvin remained in the house, he felt he won. Rodney could be Lawr's husband, but Lawr would never get rid of him. After everything, he didn't trust Rodney at all with anything.
"He could have died, you know. They wanted to toss him out of the only shelter I could find. He was bleeding out onto the sand. He wouldn't be here if I wasn't protecting him. Where were you?"

"At home, Melvin," Rodney said. "You...already know I don't do well, in- in battle or even- f-fights. I...would have just been an-another burden on him. But...th-thank you, for- bringing him home."

"You don't always have to fight. Sometimes its just carrying him to a portal. If you can't fight, at least shield him or make sure no one tosses him to the wolves. We can't be at a million places at once but it would help if we could cover our bases."
His eyes darted to the right quickly as he tensed before relaxing. "We both want him alive as long as possible."

"Y-yes, all that's- I would like to." Rodney started, fiddling with his sweater and upset that he was having to explain his handicaps to Melvin of all people. "I go to pieces if anyone raises their voice, much less a b-battlefield. I- Melvin, I'm n-not in Moon for a reason. It isn't about- pacifism. I- it's important work, everyone here does. I know-" his voice strained, "I know I'm not fit for it, I know they haven't promoted me all this time, for that, and I'd like to- to manage it like any other...normal person, here," he felt himself going to pieces now, and didn't want to do it, especially with Melvin, who he strongly suspected didn't have Lawrence's best interests at heart in the first place.
"Yes, I...I suppose we've got that," He admitted, not making eye contact. "Not wanting him dead."

"It would make everything a bit easier if you could. Two is better than one and I can't go seeing what happened to Rin happening to Lawr. Those chances are lowered if you are there, and if I get captured or turned or seperated, someone needs to be there that won't push him i to the first famine den they find. Neither one of us will enjoy his company then."
His eyes wandered to look past Rodney as he watched something. "They will throw you into a battlefield. Caelius has a short temper and threw an entire classroom of newbies to a Titan. He could do that to you. Lawr would kill himself if you got captured or worse."
And if Lawr went then Melvin would need to go to to keep Lawr from dying.
"So... " And he made a vague gesture. "What.... Can help?"

"Y-yes, logically," he agreed with Melvin again, "It would all be better if I was a help instead of a liability."
But he wasn't.
"I came here...expecting to die. But...it wasn't something I was afraid of. It's- only thanks to Lawrence that I haven't. In...in spite of the other things he's done, the other people he's...h-hurt."
He clutched at his sweater, looking along with Melvin into the room.
"I'm going to try. I don't know how it will go."

"For what he has done and could do is also a reason you should be there. He got his hand cut based on a bad call. Voices of reason should be there to help ground reality and facts he could otherwise be ignoring for a shiny reward."
And he sat there, watch Rodney continue to pull his sweater, he felt only more tired in turn.
"Have you been sparring to get more accustomed to a fighting environment?"
And to be more clear.
"I'm not trying to demean you right now and I'm really too tired to get pissed about much by the way. I'm running on empty so I'm not about to leap out of this chair." Rodney's nervousness aways felt exhausting to witness to be that high strung and tense.
