Joy remembered the red butterflies. She remembered catching glimpses of them after they all (or nearly all), briefly, turned into children. They were pretty but Joy had been on the island long enough to know that pretty things hurt you far worse than scary things.
So she avoided them.
It wouldn't save her from the outbreak.
It wouldn't save her from the swarm.
It wouldn't save her from waking in some strange place called the Dusk.
She may have seen the Shadow but was willfully ignoring it in her exploration. It was her weapon who acknowledged its presence and rasped Behind us.
Joy turned, brandishing her weapon at the Shadow. Who turned out to not be a Shadow at all.
