Ollie was already on the sparring field: weapons in his hands, striking out loosely against one of the dummies that stood, a bit abused, on one end. At five-foot-nothing, his oversized coat cast to one side, in nothing but wide pants with a somewhat battered t-shirt, Ollie was absolutely not the most intimidating person on the island. He looked, instead, like someone’s kid brother, bright-eyed and cheerful and smiling most of the time, full of bouncing energy. Something about his expression while he was training, though, was a completely different story. It was focused and intense. His efforts were turned single-mindedly to striking out at the dummy, over and over, training muscles to remember the movement so that when he was in the heart of battle he wouldn’t forget it. And he wasn’t half bad, either. But it would be better against another person.

Paige spent most of her free time in the training fields. It was imperative for a sun to keep their skills sharp, for they were regularly called away to fight on the front lines. Plus it was a good way to see how other hunters trained, for she always kept a eye out for anyone who could use improvements in their techniques. As she made her way towards the dummies, she saw another hunter was already there. She recognized this one from the sun assessment, the teenager who took on the giant monster. Quietly she watched him strike against the dummy multiple times. The kids focus was astounding, his continual strikes hitting their intended target over and over. She had to wonder if he even knew she was there with how hard he was training. "I'm surprised that dummy's still standing" She spoke. "With how hard you're hitting it."

It was her voice that made him stumble, finally, startled enough that he missed and didn’t quite fall over. Probably a good thing he was so small, and quick, catching himself and half-turning in place to blink back at her. On his end, Ollie didn’t recognize her at all, but that was nothing personal. He simply had a failure to pay attentio to things like that. His focus, at the meeting, had been on impressing Hunter, for better or for worse. Probably worse. “Um. I mean, they’re pretty durable.” But it was definitely an attempt at a joke. He didn’t blush, but only because Ollie wasn’t a blusher.

Her words had disrupted him from his training, but in part she had intended for that, noting how he overbalanced but stopped himself from falling. "Hmm, I guess so." The joke wasn't fully understood. "They'd have to be considering we like to hit them all the time." She approached Ollie, glancing at the dummy he had been using, "You have some great focus, but I wonder how much you can focus on at once." Her hand was held out, the giant claymore appearing in her grasp. "Would you like to spar? I wanna see how good your focus can get." And test the limits of his concentration.

Ollie's eyes raked up over her weapon in a way that was impressed and, maybe, just a bit excited -- a strange reaction to a weapon that was about as big as him. His own antler knives seemed small in comparison, but somehow, that didn't seem to intimidate him. Instead, it made a smile spread across his mouth, slow but wide, both of his eyebrows raised. Carefully he slid into a ready position. "Sure."

Good. He wasn't intimidated, and seeing his eagerness to spar was encouraging. Paige went into her own stance, sword raised and ready to move.

She decided to strike first this time. He didn't seem to be concerned about offense or defense, so she would test him to see what he would prefer. She rushed forward, but her strike was slow. Easy to dodge but allowing her time to analyze his movements. < Careful, your own footing was off > Chided her weapon. < Don't underestimate your opponent > HP: 60 Damage: 1 Charge: 1/3

Underestimate him she had, perhaps -- because Ollie, in return, ducked under her weapon to take a slash at her shield. He was weaker than her, certainly. Less trained, definitely. But he also was faster, it seemed. And he seemed surprised by the strike, like he hadn't quite been expecting it. HP: 49/50 DMG: 4 CHARGE: 1/3

While she could do more damage, her weapon couldn't respond in time to the quick movements of the daggers. The chuckle in her head reminded Paige that just because she knew things, doesn't mean she couldn't be taught herself. Still, just because he scored a blow didn't mean he had the upper hand. She saw his surprise, her stomach still exposed as her weapon was up and pointed forwards. So she brought it down, aiming to hit Ollie on the head with the hilt before he could dart away. HP: 56 Damage: 5 Charge: 2/3

She caught him, and for a second time he was a bit surprised -- but that didn't stop him from lashing out in response, striking at her stomach. The movement was all muscle memory, but good muscle memory. He shot a look up at her face as he pulled back, weapon still raised. And he smiled, but it wasn't teasing. It was just bright and cheerful and easy, enjoying himself. HP: 44/50 DMG: 6 CHARGE: 2/3

She had been targeted in her stomach a second time, stepping back to try and keep it from happening again. Her movements were born from years of experience, but she had learned to adapt on the battlefield. Come up with new strategies on the fly to keep her moves fresh, unpredictable. She came at him again, legs bent low and her sword sweeping across Ollie's midsection. She was smiling too. It was good to see the teen enjoying himself. HP: 50 Damage: 6 Charge: 3/3

She struck, and Ollie's reaction, since it had been working, was to go to the same spot for a third time. It was only his speed that got him anything at all, since she was so ready for it now. Next time, he'd have to try something a little more novel, intuitive. He almost looked embarrassed about the mistake. HP: 38/50 DMG: 1 CHARGE: 3/3

He may have good moves, but they were the same moves, nothing she couldn't predict. He was doing the same thing every time, aiming for the same place. She wasn't going to let him, bring her arms down to cover her stomach and striking forwards with a powerful thrust. HP: 49 Damage: 11 Charge: 3/3

She was better than him; Ollie'd never thought any differently than that. She hit hard, and Ollie stumbled a little, thrown off-balance enough that he whiffed this time. The strike was mostly reflexive, without any thought behind it. It didn't even hit her clothes. HP: 27/50 DMG: 0 CHARGE: 3/3

She had managed to stop his quick attacks, watching the teen stumble back. The daggers where easily dodged, her weapon angled down so she could cut him with a powerful upthrust. "What will you do now?" She asked him. "You can't keep using the same moves. try something new, think about what I'm doing and try to counter it!" HP: 49 Damage: 11 Charge: 3/3
