[ JOB LISTING ] Contracted Investigative Engineer
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star gaia_star

[ TASK ]
As one of the engineers it is your job to help apply the work of the metalworkers into new technology and develop products to better observer humanity and reap their data. This is where the hardware side of development goes on, though some software is tested at this level.

[ MECHANICS ]
Roll 1d6 twice, each roll is half the day.

  1. - You set up a complex motherboard array, newly developed peripheral, hardware or something else in development and yet when it is plugged in, for no discernible reason you can figure out it shorts out and goes on fire.
  2. - You come up with a more efficient way of drawing heat away from hot machinery in a flat plane, if you have already rolled this, you simply develop this further.
  3. - Somehow you accidentally stumble upon a means of pulling data from a data line without being easily detectible
  4. - You help to develop the ability to make everything smaller, phones, cables and spying devices.
  5. - You spend all of your shift trying to figure out the problems with a complex circuit and even with the help of your supervisors, no process is made at all.
  6. - You work hard all day and get your break extended by Tyr who is very pleased with the whole department's hard work.

If he'd felt like a fish out of water during his last job, that was nothing to how he felt now. Engineering was a far departure from the work he did as an alchemist, and embracing his phone was about as tech savvy as he was comfortable being. This was beyond simply navigating the apps on his phone. This, apparently, was making the electronics work in the first place.

Zyk didn't even know where to start.

Which was perhaps why they nudged him along to development, rather than setting him up with a soldering gun at a circuit board. Zyks task was to come up with a way to draw heat away from the machinery in an efficient way. Which took a bit of understanding regarding the transfer of heat through varying materials, but he wasn't in the dark on the matter.

What he ended up coming up with in the end was a water cooling system. A series of tubes butted up against the metal that had cold water running through them. They'd cool the metal, and carry the heat away to be dispelled by a fan at another point. Simple, but fairly effective. For a non engineer, it wasn't half bad.

He continued to work on the cooling system for another couple of hours before Tyr was there again, peering over his shoulder. It had Zyk turning in his chair, brows arched as he looked up at the other man. "Yes?"

he'd been expecting some sort of criticism, and honestly that would have been acceptable given Zyk's lack of experience in this particular field. Not welcome, but acceptable.

Instead, and to the famine horseman's surprise, Tyr had nothing but praise. He'd apparently been impressed when Zyk had been working with the metal smiths, and he was impressed now with the creativity Zyk was showing on his cooling project.

As a reward, Tyr extended Zyk's breaks. Which was nice, though Zyk would have preferred leaving early to hanging out longer. Ah well.
