They had always told her you didn't live long as a hunter, it was the first thing they'd done when she got on the island. And yet she had lived long. Ten years was an almost impossible amount of time on the island, with each day ticking down ever closer to the inevitable. She wouldn't see old age, it was a reality that dogged her steps relentlessly.
For her though all that had ever mattered was that she be with the ones she loved, that whatever danger she went into that she was with her family and friends. She'd never had kids and never would have kids, the weapon bond had meant that it would never be the case. All she had was Superbia, a young weapon and a weapon who would never grow up.
She knew that one day her endless luck would run out and secretly and selfishly she hoped that it would be her who died first, so that she would never have to experience the emptiness of a life without Barth in it. It was a selfish thing to think but that made it no less true.
She didn't think anything of the mission that day to the sahara, had thought nothing of the fight, nothing of where they found themselves. Everything was routine, everything was normal. The Sahara was dangerous but no more dangerous than any other location inhabited by a close cluster of horsemen. When it all went wrong she didn't at all see it coming and maybe it was best that she hadn't, it was instantaneous, painless in that it was so severe there was nothing to feel pain left.
And as she fell so too did her weapon, scattered to gravel in the sand.
