Milotic is widely reknown for its astonishing beauty. It has provided inspiration for many artists and its soothing powers are reknown. Interestingly enough, it evolves from aPokémon that is almost universally regarded as hideous. Feebas is not very strong or smart, but it is tenacious, and capable of surviving in most any conditions. '

-Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to write the real Ugly Duckling short story surrounding Feebas and Milotic, set in the Pokémon universe. However, your fairy tale is much different than the story than most of us were originally told. Thats fine, you know how it really happened, so you can set us straight.

Opens:
July 8th @ 12am CST
Closes:
July 12th @ 11:59pm CST

Prizes
Feebas By LOLTERNATIVE
Milotic
By LOLTERNATIVE

Winner picks their prize, the other is raffled off among all participants ;D

Name of your Story: The Ugly Feebas' Evolution
Entry:

He had been hatched in a pond in Kalos, not far from Lumiose City, the only Feebas in an area that did not know of his kind. Even in a river system inhabited by the famously dim Magikarp, he felt mocked. The Marill and the Surskit would flee his approach, the Panpour and Corphish would tug at his fins, and the Froakie liked to practice throwing ice and bubbles in his direction. The Goldeen, Duckletts, Psyduck, and Squirtles just ignored him, while the Carvanha threatened to eat him.

He did have one friend among the Magikarp. She never seemed to understand what was bothering him, but she didn't really seem to understand why others didn't like him, either, so he took that small gesture. He liked to watch her jump, and encouraged her to keep going, since she seemed to like doing it so much.

One day, she jumped so high into the light that a Talonflame caught her in its beak. Flailing, something magical happened, something he never expected would happen to himself, or his friend. Evolution. The startled Talonflame dropped the sudden Gyarados and flew away, squawking, as the newly-minted Gyarados floated above the surface of the pond, spraying water and bubbles after the frightened firebird.

The Feebas gazed up, awestruck at his old friend. "How did you do that?" he asked wonderingly.

"It's so easy that we should have known long ago. Do I really have to tell you how to evolve? I have to go; I can't fit in this pond anymore," she responded brusquely, gauging its size against her own. It was true. There wasn't enough space for her to truly roam anymore.

Even so, the words hurt the poor Feebas. Was evolution really that worth it, if it was just going to take his only friend away from him? Well, true, she hadn't really been the best friend to begin with, but at least he hadn't felt this lonely in a very, very long time.

The Gyarados must have noticed, and she sighed. "Look, if you wanna evolve, you'll probably need to go on an adventure. Be proactive. And if all else fails, you can ask the Spirit of the Sea itself, mighty Kyogre, in faraway Hoenn. But if you're going to go, be careful. You might have to cross the open ocean, and that's no easy voyage."

The Feebas nodded miserably to himself. That night, after a farewell party held by the local Pokemon for his friend, he swore to himself that he would heed his friend's advice. Right. Kyogre. The mighty Spirit of the Sea. He had to evolve before then, right? Right?

Oh, who was he kidding? He hadn't evolved all these years in the pond, but even she, a Magikarp, held to be one of the stupidest Pokemon species ever to grace the world's waterways, had evolved into a Gyarados, before he knew anything about himself.

He made his way downstream, moving by the light of the Kalosian stars and moon, following the current every 'Mon had always said led to the sea. It seemed the obvious way to get to the sea, where adventure lay for certain.

It took a week, since, as he got shunted into bigger and bigger rivers, and out into a delta, he kept getting turned around. He was miserably sure that, if Feebas did evolve, they had to be something that wouldn't get lost so easily. What he didn't notice was that he'd lost a lot of weight and put on some muscle tone, becoming a leaner, more powerful fish as he persisted with his mission. It just wasn't the same as evolution.

Finally, he rose cautiously to the surface, gazing out across the horizon. It was so big, and so filled with water! Was this the sea? It was plenty big enough for whole schools of Gyarados!

He stared so long at the expanse of water, that he almost missed the cry of a bird above. His slow reflexes almost betrayed him as a Pelipper nearly scooped him up in its massive beak. Ducking below, he found himself face to face with a school of giggling Luvdiscs scooting past, and a baleful Skrelp shoving past towards the sea grasses.

"Hey, kid! Ya new around here?" came a voice from below. It had a funny accent, as though it didn't speak the local Kalosian language natively.

The Feebas looked down to see something that looked a bit like a Corphish, only smaller, and with earth crusted thickly on its back. It also looked like the Clawncher that had aimed beams of concentrated bubbles at him when he'd gotten too close in the delta.

"I'm a Crustle. Guessin' ya never seen a Crustle before, have ya?" it asked merrily. "Anyway, what are ya, kid? I ain't seen yer type around before. Oh, hey, want this scale I found?" It waved around a prismatic scale in one claw.

"Ummm, no. I'm from near Lumiose City. I'm a Feebas," he replied uncertainly. He took the rainbow scale shyly, bobbing his gratitude for the sudden and unexpected gift.

"A Feebas, eh? I heard a little from a long time ago in Unova about Feebas. Ain't native to Kalos or Unova. Basculin toys out there. How can I help ya?" the Crustle asked amiably.

The Feebas' heart sank slightly. So there weren't any Feebas who lived nearby. He hadn't really expected to ever meet any, but he'd vaguely hoped someone in the seas of Kalos might know of them. And if they were the toys of other Water Pokemon, odds were that Feebas were just generally cursed.

"I want to know if Feebas can evolve. What I can do to evolve," he replied earnestly.

The Crustle paused, scratching at itself for a moment before answering. "Can't say as I've ever heard that. I could be gettin' my story mixed up, but I do remember a story of a Feebas turning into something else. Could happen, but you might need something real special to do that, like the Clamperl do when they ditch their shell. Don't know what it is, though. You could ask the Wailord. They might know."

"The Wailord? Which ones are they?" The Feebas asked hopefully.

"The big ones over there, in the pod," the Crustle said, pointing.

The Feebas' eyes went huge. The Wailord were huge! They wouldn't even fit in his native pond. Even the smaller things swimming in the pod looked almost as large as a Gyarados.

"Don't worry about it, kid! They're real sweethearts. You can ask 'em anythin'. Anyway, gotta get goin'. See ya!" And with that, the Crustle scuttled away toward the beach, leaving the Feebas to stare at the Wailord pod.

Taking a deep breath, he swam toward the pod, intent on getting his answers. Clutched awkwardly to his body was the opalescent scale.

As he approached, a group of Pokemon with long, dangling tentacles by the score and cruel beaks floated up to the Wailord and began attacking them. Despair and outrage filled the little Feebas. After all he'd dealt with his whole life, some sea Pokemon he didn't know were about to take it all away from him! With a cry of rage, he blindly charged the strange things, slamming into them again and again in desperation.

Startled, the strange Pokemon turned to him and seized him in their nebulous tentacles, beginning to squeeze him. He kept fighting to the best of his abilities, starting to feel faint. He was going to die, like his friend when the Talonflame had caught her. Only he wouldn't evolve out of it. The Crustle hadn't even been sure that Feebas could evolve.

A light began to suffuse the Feebas, and the scale he clutched so tightly melted away into the glowing Pokemon. He didn't notice until he reached out to flail with his tail fins, only to find them longer and stronger. Whirling around to face his suddenly strange tail fins, he found that he was only moving his head, and not his whole body. His tail looked nothing like it did before. His whole body looked strange.

Suddenly, he was jolted as he squirmed around to see the Wailord attacking these strange things, these Tentacruel.

Had he, the ugly Feebas, evolved? How had he--OK, stupid question. He could sort out the matters of the scale and the adventure later. Invigorated, the Milotic helped drive the Tentacruel away. He watched them retreat only briefly as he whirled around, trying to get a better look at himself.

The Wailord had swum over to him as he tried to take stock of his evolution. "We thank you for your act of courage, Milotic," the leader keened gently. "May we grant you a boon?"

The Milotic paused. "I think my main questions are already answered," he finally confessed, "but I have a new set. Where can I find out more about Milotic and Feebas?"

The Wailord smiled, and hauntingly sang its answer.

Name of your Story: The Ugly Feebas and the Prism's Song
Entry:

Once upon a time a young Feebas was caught in a storm and washed out to sea far far from the river he'd called home. He awoke frightened in a strange new place, a reef full of color and many pokemon unlike any he'd ever seen before. The other pokemon had never seen anything quite like him before either. Nothing so plain and drab had ever lived in their reef before, at least that they bothered to remember, and they didn't hesitate to inform the newcomer of that fact. The poor little Feebas was not a stranger to being alone, but that was because in his little river it had been rare for him to encounter others. Now he was surrounded by vibrant life and he longed to be a part of it, but no matter where he turned he was dismissed and mocked. "Silly plain little fish, there's no place for you here," they would say before laughing and swimming away. And so Feebas continued on alone, exploring the reef and surrounding waters and wondering if someday he'd find a place he could again call "home."

Among the pokemon on the reef one was admired by all the rest. She lived aloof and alone passing through the reef daily singing songs both soothing and full of joy. Feebas took to watching her from the dark little corners where he'd hide from the mocking of the other pokemon. She was the most beautiful pokemon he'd ever seen and her beauty and her songs called to him in a way he could not explain. When he wasn't watching her, Feebas explored the areas around the reef. His small size allowed him to slip into places like shipwrecks and he found beautiful jewels and other bits and baubles. Some of these he used to decorate the otherwise dreary little hole in the edge of the reef that he called his own. Others he would leave in the path of Milotic when she made her daily journey around the reef. She accepted each of these gifts with pleasure and it was reflected in her song.

Milotic was aware of the newcomer to the reef and that he was the one leaving the gifts. She happily wore the jewels as she swam, always keeping a lookout for Feebas. She added a curious calling to her songs and finally with a new jewel Feebas waited for her. She smiled at him as she accepted the gift. "Thank you, I was hoping to meet you little Feebas. Will you swim with me? I have a story I'd like to share."

"Me? Swim with you? I... yes... I'd love to hear your story."

She smiled a mysterious smile and continued on her usual circuit. They swam through the reef the other pokemon watching wide-eyed as the strange pair passed by. The Milotic sang her usual song until they reach the edge of the reef and continued beyond. Then the song became the story... her story. It was a story familiar to Feebas, a little fish washed out to sea left to survive on her own, left to feel less than the bright beautiful pokemon and the reef they called home, but where she unwelcome. She too explored places where others would not go and one day she stumbled upon a dazzling prism scale. She lifted the scale and suddenly the world was filled with music and she lifted her voice to join that music. At first her voice was small and creaky but she began to feel a strange tingling all over her body and the music moved through her and she was surrounded by light, like she was caught inside the prism scale. When the light faded her world was changed forever, no longer a lowly feebas she was Milotic.

"And so I share my song and joy with others, but I can never forget how they treated me when I first arrived. So I'm never able to share more than the song with them, I've still been so alone all this time." Milotic swam around the stunned Feebas who was trying to comprehend that this beautiful creature had once also been a little ugly fishling like himself... She smiled her dazzling mysterious smile before flourishing her tail and revealing the dazzling prism scale that she then held out to him. "Perhaps it's time for me to share more than my song with someone who understands..."

He heard the music even before he touched the scale and was overwhelmed with the dazzling music and dancing light.

When next the daily song was heard on the reef it was two voices raised in happiness and joy as the pair of Milotic danced together sharing their voices and their love with the inhabitants of the reef and all the wide beautiful sea.

Have you won a soquili: Nope
Have you won a Familiar: Nope
Preference: Milotic, Feebas

Name of your Story: Bros is Terrible at Titles
Entry: As was well known in the pokemon world, there were quite a few ugly pokemon. Trubbish, Garbodor, Muk, Grimer, etc. But do you recall, the most ugly one of them all…?

Anyway Feebas was what you could consider to be quite an ugly pokemon, what with it’s swollen lips and it’s black mascara around it’s eye, which was hard to find by the way! It’s not cheap finding some that’s waterproof! And well… okay not really sure why it’s considered so ugly when you have pokemon like Exploud that has holes in it. HOLES! And Grimer is supposed to be freaking radioactive!

But I’m getting off topic here. This is a story of when a tough as nails Feebas meets a Milotic and stuff happens.

One day, a Feebas (nicknamed Feeb by this author because they are lazy about typing out Feeb every time) was swimming around, minding his own business. Now, this was no ordinary Feeb, though it looked just like all of the other ones, it wasn’t even shiny, THIS Feeb was tough as nails and refused to be caught! And it disappointed hopeful trainers who wanted to catch and evolve it when they finally found the right square to fish in their game! (See generation 3 original version folks!)

So one day, Feeb was swimming around and suddenly, something bright and shiny. However, Feeb wasn’t interested in such things as it would ruin his totally tough and ugly image that he proudly boasted of. Unfortunately for him though, said shiny and bright thing actually got closer to him! And to his horror, it turned out to be a milotic! And not only that, but it was singing that shiny song from that recent movie! The HORROR! Feeb tried to swim away, but the milotic continued to follow! It was pure torture to poor Feeb! Not only did the shiny-ness burn his eyes, that he couldn’t cover by the way! But this milotic was singing off key! And poor Feeb couldn’t cover his ear-holes either! Darn small fins! He cursed whomever had designed his species, if only they could have had longer fins like a golden!

Soon, it was too much for poor Feeb to take and it caused him to faint. It seemed that the milotic had been using Disarming Voice by accident. The milotic looked upon the Feebas and paused for a second, wondering what to do…

Eventually Feeb would wake up to a mocking crowd of other water-type pokemon and looked at his face on a reflective rock. Milotic had drawn all over his face with… something! We won’t guess what the something was. Not only did Feeb still look ugly, but now he looked ridiculous too! Like some sort of grayish-clown!

At At least trainers didn’t try to catch him anymore after that.
