Unbeknownst to Riley, Sammy had watched the whole jousting situation between her and Andrew. She had taken not far off to watch secretly cheering Riley on. Sadly just as it wrapped up she had gotten a series of messages on her phone and had to look away.
By the time she glanced back up Riley was already wandering away. Likely to just scamper off back to the labs before Sammy could catch her. It took a bit of sprinting to catch up to the purple dreaded hunter but she fell right into pace with her munching on a candy bar.
"Alright, spill the beans," she declared, "You're a shape shifter, a clone, or some kind of doppleganger who replaced my favorite Lab Nerd with a brave bold girl who sends text messages and kicks a** in jousting?" Thankfully she had changed, or at least abandoned her tattered jacket earlier from the pit as she didn't stink of blood and guts.
"I saw what you did, you where laughing like a loon after you kicked Andrew's a**. I haven't seen you that excited since." She paused, "Honestly, that's the happiest I think I've ever seen you."

Winning the second match and watching Andrew impale himself on her sword was, for lack of a better word, satisfying as ********. After she'd put her mount back and most definitely headed for the labs, the sense of smugness she'd achieved from watching Andrew fall off his mount was gone. She was back to her old self, which made being approached by someone was enough to startle her into skipping a step away before even looking at who it was.
Sammy's observation about Riley being happy, and laughing, put her on edge. She felt like this was a weakness, and if Sammy had noticed, perhaps others had, as well.
"Are you saying I am neither brave, bold, nor do I have the ability to kick a**? What gave you these indications in the past? I have never shied away from a fight. I do not lag behind during missions, or request the easy or safe methods for my experimentation." She crunched her nose up, and then returned to walking down the path meant for the labs with the full confidence that Sammy was just going to end up following her. So she kept talking.
"I'll give you the last one, though. Laughter, despite how - good it feels - isn't really necessary in our line of duty. But Andrew deserved to be knocked a peg down, and I didn't really have to do anything but enjoy it as it unfolded. It was.. very satisfying."
And she almost smiled, before she caught herself.
"So yes. Admittedly, that was new. It won't happen again."

Character's name: Riley Character's clan: Life Hunter, Specialization: Golem Research Character's journal link: Here Character's Arcana: Judgement (Wild Arcana Bonus, +2 Arcana to others bonus) BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF MY CHARACTER: She's 6 foot even, thin, and a little on the nerdy side. Glasses, dark skin, thick purple-black dreds held up in a ponytail, and very introverted. She's always in the Life Labs, and has trouble talking to others. About anything. Ever. Her weapon is a double whip, attached by a chain, named Andeon.
Maybe it was in her head, but for a moment it looked like Riley had tensed up once she fell into stride talking to her. It wasn't an unusual reaction from her, but it did seem out of place given how openly joyful she was over her very swift victory against Andrew.
"In regards to missions and experimentation? Never would I call you a coward, that would be a bold face lie," she said easily. "But talking in the text channels? That's unusually brave, or charismatic? Is that the word I want. I'm not sure. But it is unusual by most standards." Riley was of course right, Sammy didn't even miss a step and continued to follow RIley on the path towards the labs.
"Laughter does belong, we need it, it keeps us going in face of a lot of the grim stuff we face," the last part was said a bit softer, "Besides, you know me, I laugh at a lot of things and I do my job just as well as you do yours."
The topic shifted towards Andrew and Sammy grinned in a wicked sort of way, "He always deserves it, grumpy little sourpuss was raining on the team meeting today." She paused, "Did you just, almost smile?" She leaned closer to Riley, "I saw it, your lips twitched as you mentioned it being satisfying, no, we're going right back there. Better, I'm taking to you the Pit so you can kick his butt good and proper like and I can watch while you laugh in triumph again."

She didn't argue. Even if she disagreed that laughter was really important for anything. It was pointless, and exhausting, to try and convince others of her sensible outlook on life. All that mattered was that she knew better.
"I've become far more interested in the environment the text channels present. As Haddy said to me, it is an even playing field. That's worth exploring." And becoming addicted to, quickly.
She adamantly ignored the question as to whether she'd smiled or not, and turned her head away. "I don't want to be anywhere near that man, not for another second. He'll simply keep taking pictures of me and trying to bully me into wanting him in some nasty, carnal way. I'm not a fool. I understand men's minds."
Oh lord, no she did not.
"He'd probably like it if I kicked his butt, as you put it. I'll pass."

I'm only quoting you so you don't miss this terrible, awful continuation of her misconception.
Sammy found the lack of an argument just a tad bit of a let down, she always liked pointless debate, but trying to get that out of Riley was actually harder than getting her to smile so she would consider the ignored and unacknowledged attempt at a smile as collateral that she was indeed the real winner here. Even if Riley was the smarter of them.
“Makes sense, I can be as tough as I want, we’re all just little screen icons and emojis in there,” she didn’t dare bring up that brain power, a sharp tongue, and other tools could be used as weapons there. That was an experiment she was in no rush to see Riley commit to.
They turned back to Andrew, Sammy moving quickly to get ahead of Riley walking backwards to face her. “He’s been eyeing you?” She said with two very raised eyebrows. “Taking unsolicited pictures?” She shook her head, “Oh no, you’re not going to kick his a**, I’ll do the kicking, I’ll chuck him into the Pit and let the shadows have a round with him when I’m done and I’ll film the whole thing for you. We’ll call it an early Birthday gift but I am not about to let the lazy pile of bones side eye my favorite Techie without permission.”
