At first glance you think it might be a pet store. At second glance you think it might be an animal themed gym. You decide to find out which it is.

Upon entering the actual shop - Along the wall to your left you see cute little glass displays filled with a variety of pets. Furry and scaly and feathered - pets of all types. They look...a little strange. Along the wall to your right you see tanks filled with strange, large, orange fish. Dozens, perhaps hundreds of them.

The center of the shop is taken up by some kind of platform - it almost looks like a Sumo Wrestling ring. That seems...odd. Even more odd is all the gym equipment placed around the shop. In fact, there's a full gym in the back half of the shop, complete with treadmills and punching bags and ice baths - Right next to what appears to be a grooming station. What kind of crazy world have you entered into?

It's a pet store.

A very tall, very loud, very muscular man comes bounding up to you, a friendly grin on his face. "HELLO! Come over here. Let's see what you've got!" He pulls you right into the shop - wait does that dog have tentacles coming out of its back?

****

Allen is the owner of this obviously a pet shop. He's declared himself the pet trainer master, whatever that means. His determined face is legendary and in his arm he's holding some... fish?

gaia_star A reminder to go here on how to take on a job!

Quote:

[ JOB LISTING ] FLORESCE FEEDING
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star
[ TASK ] One of the most important things is to remember to feed your Floresce. It's simple. Get some Floresce Food out of the Floresce Food Box, carry them over to the tank and drop them in! Roll 1 d4 to see how it goes. : DD :custard:

  1. They watch you. There have to be nearly 30 of them - all large and very orange Floresce. With their wide eyes and gaping mouths, they watch you get the food. They know. As you near the tank you realize there is no lid. You realize the Floresce are swimming side to side frantically. Before you can react - THEY LEAP STRAIGHT AT YOU!! They hit you, flailing, and do their best to devour the food. You fall to the ground buried in Floresce.
"Fast Friends!" Allen is suddenly standing over you, grinning. "The bond between a Floresce and his trainer is VERY important." He nods sagely. "Do you think you're ready to take one home?"

  2. You gather as much food into your arms as you can. There ARE nearly 30 large Floresce in that tank. Somehow -perhaps there is water on the floor and you slip- you DROP THE FOOD. As you stoop to pick them up, large floresce start leaping out of the tank and land flailing on the floor. You now have a huge mess, and 30 Floresce, to clean up. At least the fish are eating.

"Ha!" Allen surprises you with a hearty laugh. "Making them work for their food! Brilliant training method!" He pats you on the back and sends staggering from the force of it.

  3. You decide to be careful, and drop one Food piece at a time into the tank. The Floresce... never seem... to get full. 2 hours later you empty the box of food - and the floresce are STILL gaping at you, begging.

"You're still here?" Allen stops by to see you. "Are they all fed. Do you want to arm-wrestle?"

  4. You bring great handfuls of food to the tank - and the Floresce splash and writhe and jump! YOU'VE INDUCED A FEEDING FRENZY!! While no (or very few) floresce actually leap out of the tank - they DO flail against the glass causing it to crack! It beings to leak.
Good thing there is a roll of duct tape nearby.

Allen doesn't seem to notice you at all.

[ JOB LISTING ] Pet Grooming
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star
[ TASK ] You've been asked to help with the pet grooming. "They come to us so they can look their very best!"
It's easy. Just bathe and dress the pet.

Step 1: BATHING: Roll 1 d4 to see how the bathing goes. Match the roll to the number below.

  1. OH NO. This little critter is a feisty one. It snaps and barks and bites at you. "Aw, look at how excited it is to go to the PARTY!!!" Allen is standing over your shoulder. If you complain about the pet biting you, he places a hand on your shoulder and solemnly says, "Be strong. Let your battle spirit win him over."

  2. This little critter is not bitey at all, but boy-oh-boy, is it energetic. The moment you have it's fur all covered in soap it knows. It makes a break for it, slipping out of your grasp and across the store, a barking, soapy, wet ball of fur. "A noble steed!" You hear Allen yell from another direction.
Roll 1 d6 until you roll even. When you roll even you catch the critter. For every odd you roll, Allen gives you a should of encouragement. "Keep trying! Defeat the evil of your doubt! Believe it!"

  3. You make it through the bathing okay, but as you turn your back to grab the towel, the critter jumps off the table and heads straight for an enclosure holding several snakes. Roll 1 d6 until you roll even. When you roll even you successfully rescue the beast from the snake enclosure. Every time you roll odd Allen gives you pep talk: "Believe in yourself! Believe in the me that believes in you!"

  4. No matter how hard you try, you can't seem to get this pet clean. If you tell Allen this, he will give you a speech about how what really matters is our heart. "Two hearts must beat as one. Once it's heart is clean, it's mind and body will be clean as well." He gives you a GREAT BIG BEAR HUG just to show you how it's done. You can't breathe. You think your ribs might be broken. "Now you know how much I believe in you!"
You decide that maybe the pet is just the color of soot naturally.

Step 2: DRESSING UP: This part is simple. Choose an outfit for your critter from the pile at the grooming station.

Roll 1 d10 to see how hard of a time you have getting the pet into the costume. 1 is easy, 10 is very, very hard.
No matter your troubles - be assured Allen is there to yell encouraging words. "You can do this!" Really Allen, it's okay to not yell so loud.

[ JOB LISTING ] Floresce Care Training
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star gaia_star
[ TASK ] You are told that you need to train the floresce. Train them how? you might ask? "WITH A TRAINING COURSE, OF COURSE!"

You are handed a large and probably orange Floresce. Your job is to take it to the Pet Gym in the corner of the shop. "Help it become the GREATEST fForesce it can be!!" The Floresce flails in your arms, it's great eyes not betraying it's thoughts as you carry it to the workout space.

The training is actually pretty simple! The fish know what to do!! (This seems to be a very common activity around here.)

This is a Three-Part Job. Step one is NAMING, Step two is TRAINING, Step three is TOURNEY!!

Follow each step below.

STEP 1: NAMING: NAME YOUR FLORESCE. This is very, very, very important. Please bold your fish's name in your first post.

STEP 2: TRAINING:Roll 2 d6. The first dice is the training method you'll be using, and the second dice is the fish's effort! (So if I roll a 1, 4 - I go to Workout Station 1, and my Floresce gave an Effort of GREAT!)

  1. Workout Station 1: The Uphill Treadmill
It's one of those treadmills that simulates walking up a hill. Put the floresce on it, and turn it on. Watch as the floresce flops and flails it's way along the belt! More than once while the floresce is flailing along Allen stops by to tell you, "TURN IT UP! Faster! Stronger! Harder!"

When the floresce grows tired, turn off the machine and give it some tasty Floresce Food!

  2. Workout Station 2: The Punching Bag
There is a great big leather punching bag. It looks pretty worn out. Simply stand back and let the floresce tackle the heck out of the thing!

Allen stops by to check on you. "Encourage it more! *PET NAME HERE*! Come on! One, two! One, two!" He throws a few punches of his own as demonstration before running off to help someone else.

  3. Workout Station 3: The Jump Rope
This is a workout for both YOU AND THE FLORESCE. YOU GET TO JUMP ROPE TOGETHER. It's fun. It's healthy. Please spend a lot of time jumping rope together!!! LIKE THIS!

"Good Job!" Allen says when he stops by. "Keep going until you hit 100 jumps!" If you are being sluggish about it - he'll gladly show you how it's done.

  4. Workout Station 4: The High Jump
A thin red-and-white bar is held aloft by two posts. On the opposite side is a cushion, and the near side nothing but a small platform. The Floresce simply jumps - and you raise the bar higher and higher until it can't jump over it anymore.
    ...
    ..
    ...
    ..
    ...
    ..
    ...
    OH NOOOOOO. In the middle of a jump - an escaped bird came by and STOLE YOUR FLORESCE. Goodbye fish!! ;-;

Allen pats you on the back. "We always remember the Fallen Floresce in our hearts." He is quiet for a moment, his gaze distant as if remembering old friends long since passed from this world. Then his very determined eyes look back at you. "Get a new Floresce. Start over! Never give up!" He leaves you with a hearty pat on the shoulder.

--Go back to Step One with a new Floresce

  5. Workout Station 5: The Boulder Push
Yes, that IS a giant boulder. Yes, the Floresce is going to flail itself at it to see how far it can move the boulder. You don't think it's going to move very much, no matter how much effort your Floresce puts into it.

Allan will stop by to show it how it's done. "Like this! Hi-ya!" His kick to the boulder will certainly crack it.

  6. Workout Station 6: Mental Training
A strong mind is just as important as a strong body! Take your floresce to the meditation corner and sit down with them. Get comfortable, close your eyes, and breathe in and breathe out. Breath in.... breathe out... Let your mind clear itself.... With each breath, tell yourself that YOU are the strongest. You and your fish ARE the strongest team..... When you are ready, simply let yourself come back to the here and now. You feel refreshed.
Your Floresce flops quietly next to you the whole time. It has no eyelids to close.

When you move to get up from your meditation, you realize Allen has been sitting next to you for.. you don't know how long. "Feeling stronger yet?" The grin on his face make you worry he's about to challenge you to something.

--Now that training is over it's time to look at your floresce's EFFORT:
**Effort Roll (second dice):**
1, 2, 3 = Good Effort. +10 to your Tourney Roll
4, 5 = Great Effort! +20 to your Tourney Roll
6 = AMAZING Effort!! +30 to your Tourney Roll

STEP 3: TOURNEY
The whole point of training is to prepare your fForesce for the JUMPING CHAMPIONSHIPS!! Now that you've successfully completed some training, it's time to test your mettle against Allen and his Very Strong Floresce!!
"Are you ready?" Allen asks. His face is nothing short of determined. "My Fish and I will pour our heart into this match. I expect you to, as well." The friendly pat on your back nearly sense you flying. "Let's go," he says, leading you to the Jumping Ground.

Roll 2 d100. The first die is how high YOUR fish jumped, the second is how his ALLEN'S fish jumped. Whoever Jumped the Highest is the WINNER!! (Remember to add your fish's EFFORT to your roll!)
(Example: I roll 21, 33. My fish had Great effort for +20 -- so the final score is My fish 21+20 = 41 vs. Allen's fish 33. I win!)

gaia_star gaia_star gaia_star

If you DEFEAT ALLEN - He seems pretty impressed but it looks like him and his Floresce are planning to work harder. He gives you a cheerleading fish of a random colour as a prize. Wait... there feels something off about it...

If you LOSE - Allan congratulates you, and hands you your Floresce, and you move on your way. He seems pretty happy he won.

She was wearing her civilian clothes, which really just meant she'd left her coat and her obvious medical bag at home. Her purse was still full of bandages - just in case. Otherwise, she'd pass for a civilian, or at least a horseman trying to pass as one. Her outfit was a bit frilly and no suited for working with pets.

Which was just as well, since she wasn't here to work.

"Hello," Aidel said as she made a beeline for the cash register, "I'm looking for the owner of this lovey shop. I'd like to buy a fish from him."

Riley had come to battle Allen so many times without ever once giving herself a chance to look around, and she decided that today she would change that. When she entered the pet store, she could see that Allen was occupied with another customer, which was all the better for her. She wanted to be left alone to peruse all of the different animals this strange pet store had to offer. She wanted to take pictures, and write notes, and observe every little difference a creature made of fear might have to one found in the human world.

There were so many surprisingly cute ones. That was what always surprised her. Some of the creatures born out of something as strange and terrible as a substance called Fear shouldn't be as cute as some of these were, and yet they were - fluffy, doe eyed, mewling, pawing, wiggling with delight. Her heart throbbed to see them, all behind the glass, begging to be pet.

She pressed her fingers against the glass, and some of them sat up, licking away as if they could get to her if they just tried hard enough.

And then there were the fish. An entire wall of them, all floating with vacant expressions as they waited to be chosen and trained. She still didn't understand how fish were so easy to train with normal training methods, but there was no logic in a Fear based world, so she simply walked through the aisle, and reached down to a fish she would have chosen and plucked out, has she been there to play.

It floated up and nibbled on her finger playfully, causing her lips to quirk up in a tiny smile.

Even the fish were precious, here. It was absurd.
PostPosted: Tue Jun 20, 2017 3:37 am

Andrew walked in and he was interested in fish. He made a bee line to go look at them, staring more at the odd looking fish then Riley at first. He was there with focus, till he noticed her. And then, scooted away. He glanced around for Sammy , wondering if she was escorting the crazy lady who was out of the labs for once.

He didn't see her, but he decided not to run any risk of it. Instead he took a position away from Riley, and went back to studying the fish. He was trying to figure out which one would be best for later winnings. They didn't look particularly energetic today, but that was fairly normal. Maybe that one over there fluttering about would be good. Maybe, but it might be wasting it's energy.

He sighed and glanced at the birds, glaring at one in particular. "Dumb bird." It had stolen one of his prize fish. it would have done really, well, he was sure of it. Maybe he should buy it and give it to Riley for her experiments. she did golems and not fear creatures, but he was sure she could find something horrible to do to it.

There was also a girl looking to buy more fish. He didn't blame her. they were pretty cool.

Zere had decided to check out the shop front, taking his newest fish with him, Boots.

Boots was kind of soot-colored, and he kept petting it, tracing over its scales and over the kind of skeleton fish markings it had.

He perked up as he saw Andrew, face brightening.

"Hey! We kind of battled together, do you remember? Do you still have your fish or are you looking to get a new one?" Zere was glad to see the other, more happy that there was a familiar face than anything else.

He glanced over at the other person. "Hi pretty lady!"

Riley was so entranced by the fish nibbling at her fingers, that she actually didn't even notice Andrew had come in. When someone spoke to her however, she let out a soft yelp of surprise and the fish swam far away from her hand.

She turned around, and raised a brow at the 'compliment'. Then she realized Andrew was there, and ********, ********, ********, <********/>".. Hi."

"Oh yeah, your first one got eaten bird the bird didn't it?" he said casually. Was it the same bird?

"Oh hi Riley." he said as if he had just noticed her.

"One of mine got eaten by a bird too. It was a good fish too." he lamented, and shook his head. He shot the birds another glare and looked down at the fish again. "I'm assessing."

Zere's face soured.

"... yes. It was." Thanks for the reminder, Andrew.

Staring at the bird, Zere wrapped his arms around Boots, turning away and glaring at it.

"... what exactly are you assessing..." Zere murmured, then blinked, an idea forming in his mind.

"You know... if it's the same bird... we could cage it so it won't happen again." A small smile crept its way onto Zere's face. "That way... if we get any more high jumping fish..."

He turned to Riley, giving her a nod of respect. "Greetings. I'm Zere. Did you come for a fish too?"

"Mmm." Was all Andrew got, hummed out through tightly pursed lips.

To Zere, she shook her head. It was clear she wasn't comfortable with conversation, and would have been happier left alone, but she wasn't rude enough to keep from replying. "Not this time. Just looking."

"Cage? I say we buy it and give it to..." he cut himself off from saying life division out loud. "Riley, you want a bird?" he glanced at her. "You'll want to keep it away from any fish you have, but I'm sure you can do something with it." he grinned with a touch of malicious intent showing through.

"I'm assessing the best jumper of course. I'll claim it later though. No time for training today." he bend down over them.

Stepping away from the bird, Zere kept protecting Boots as he eyed Andrew, wholly unsure of what the other was up to.

He didn't trust this situation at all, and the way Andrew was grinning...

"What are you doing," He stated, not quite a question. "If you do anything to Boots, I swear--"
