[ JOB LISTING ] Assistant Sales Clerk
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star
[ TASK ] The key word here is Assistant. You will be helping with the front of house operations and other minor tasks. Roll 2d4. The first die chooses the task for the day, the second die is the 'event'. RP accordingly! Events can be major or minor, it is up to you. (If I roll 2,4, then I have task 2, and the 4 dictates my event.)

  1. Adelaide would like you to watch the front of house. It's not terribly difficult, as customers usually just come in to browse and - Oh, no. That woman over there isn't watching her three children and they've decided to play tag among the priceless, delicate displays. Event: If your second dice is odd the children nearly break a vase. If it is even they pull a tapestry off the wall.

  2. "Here is the duster. This cleaner is for glass, this one for the shelves." As the newest member of the team, the tedious task of dusting everything in the main gallery falls to you. Try not to break anything, and remember: Adelaide is looking for a streak-free shine! Event: If your second dice is odd you have trouble with some greasy fingerprints on glass. If it is even Adelaide isn't pleased with your work and asks you to do it again (just rp no rolling!)

  3. Coffee run! Adelaide is requesting one mid-sized cafe mocha, extra chocolate and whipped cream, as well as six other drinks for various staff and clients. Her favourite coffee place is two blocks down the street. "Oh, and don't forget a half dozen of their triple-chocolate muffins." Event: If your second die is odd the coffee shop clerk gives you too much change. If it is even the coffee shop clerk winks at you, slipping an extra muffin into the to-go bag.

  4. Unloading duty. A shipment has arrived and your job is to help unload the truck. There are 20 wooden crates, weighing anything from 2 pounds to as much as you. Event: If your second dice is odd as your reach for a box a large rat crawls out the box and up your arm. If it is even nearly all of the boxes are very heavy.

One of the best parts of modernization (and there's a lot of good parts okay, even if she's having some trouble remembering ALL of them) was the clothes. Unfortunately, America was kinda broke, or at least, she hadn't been able to remember where all her savings were. That wasn't a problem for her, of course, if you don't have money then make it.

Good thing there were always small jobs available from other members of the Clan Fam. This one looked especially good, because hello! Even if she didn't have money to shop (yet) she could at least shop with her eyes!

Currency. It was what Otto was lacking. Especially since he had a very dangerous obsession with new jewellery. Having said that, the blonde haired black clothed being moved down the shops as if on a mission. He needed a job. But just a small, short one. Enough to get by, but without the commitment of a long term one. Who knew when his own missions might come back to take priority.

As for the modernization, he was getting more used to it than he would have preferred. There was something to be said for the simplicity of the old ways, so engrained it was like breathing life itself. But something magical and new drew him towards these new concepts, as if remembering an old dream.

He happened upon someone else staring forlornly into shop windows. "Are you broke too?" He asked casually, tugging at his own empty pockets. "You just got that sorta lost look in yer eyes."

The younger horseman nodded a strong affirmative, ponytail bobbing fiercely. "I'm pretty sure I have like, lots of gold and stuff somewhere...I just need to get by until I remember where I put it!"

Glancing into the window again, she decided to march toward the doors, "This one is fancy as hello, I bet they'll pay really well."

The antique shop was huge. It couldn't even be called a shop, that word was way too small. More like a for-profit antique museum. They could definitely afford her services. "You coming?"

Otto followed her in, his arms close to his body as if entering the large space was an intrusion. A small part of him felt as if he wasn't good enough to be here. Then he checked himself.

Shaking his head at his own doubts, he breathed out a sigh. "Yeah.. Know anything about antiques?" He knew... little. He ought to know more, but such knowledge was lost on him at present. Maybe knowledge wouldn't matter. It was a people skills job, right? He knew people. Knew how to beat them up, or kill them quietly. "Whatever.. We got this in the bag."

Easy peasy!

Walking a little more confidently, he approached the desk. He placed both hands down, as if this was a demand and not a request. "Um."

That was as far as he got before he lost all guts.

"Yeah! Well," America amended, "kinda! There's lots of them around the Conquest floors." Fortunately for the two, the lady at the desk knew the look of Looking for a Job and led them right to the boss.

Sitting upright, hands in her lap, the noble did her best to look attentive and competent and like, totally the best decision this lady has made all day.

"We serve as the middle man, getting clients what they want or need. Your job here will be to assist with that. In house things, of course. Field work is reserved for the most senior and trusted of us. Perhaps one day that can be you." The boss lady smiled at them. "You were here about the job, right?"

"Yes ma'am!"

During the interview, Otto's gaze seemed to lose all gleam. This was boring. He was bored. Jobs were supposed to just be given to you. Orders from higher up. Nice and easy. He accidentally stopped listening until he heard America speak up chirpily. His eyes darted to her, then back to the woman.

"Uh, yeah." What was he agreeing to? Oh well. Probably something about don't touch the velvet rope. "Can we start now?"

The first task they were given was, sadly, not a cushy counter job but a tough and dirty job unloading heavy boxes. Like, really super heavy, holy carp! Heaving one box up she gave Otto a side glance to see if he was stronger than her.

"How you holding up?"

Part of her wanted to try getting him to do all the work for her, but another part also wanted to win by carrying more of them faster than he could.

Otto was glad it turned out to be grunt work. It involved a lot less thinking and a lot more doing. He looked over at America, finding she was carrying more than him. Out of a sense of competition, he wanted to look tougher. So, Otto stooped to pick up bigger boxes and piled them up before lifting them.

Bad move.

As soon as he was up again, a large, dirty looking rat snuck out the bottom of his box and crawled up his arm. He felt it more than saw it, yelping as he dropped the boxes and all they contained onto the floor. With a grunt, he flung his arm outward to dislodge the mangy rodent.

Mr Rat went flying, spindly limbs spread into the sky as it's engorged body certainly full of garbage food spun through the air. With a raspy squeak, it landed elsewhere, with only the scraping sound of long nailed feet scampering into the distance.

Otto stared heavily at the boxes he'd dropped, and lifted his gaze to the now silent end of the room where Mr Rat had gone to. Shame coloured his face as bright as war paint.

"Well." He murmured to himself.

"It flew pretty far?" America's tone tried to be sympathetic, but was maybe also a little smug as she moved to help carry the dropped load. Not every one could be as great at everything as she was, right?

"This better pay good if we're gonna be getting attacked by mutant rats, though."

"I'd rather turn this into an extermination mission at this point." Otto grumbled, feeling itchy just thinking of the rat. Some deep part of himself had been disturbed by the contact between his skin and that of a dirty rodent. A warrior ought not to be shaken by something so trivial. Yet that nagging sense of unease lingered ever still.

"I coulda hit it farther if I had a big stick." He kicked another pile of boxes to check for more rats. "Maybe I don't need the money as much as I thought."

If America had hoped for a hard working companion, such notions died post-rat.

Once America was done hauling all the boxes and declaring herself The Winner, she decided to hunt for rats too.

"I bet I can find more than you!"

Because she never got tired of winning.

Otto smirked with confidence. "Please. I got this in the bag." And with that, the Rat-Extermination began... Otto was off to a slow start. But if you asked him how his progress was going, he'd insist that such matters were to be done with sleuth and care.

Otto stuck to the shadows, his eyes peeled for rats who lurked in the dripping dark corners of the warehouse. He needed to be quiet and quick, lest he scare the rats off and lead them straight to America. He found one rat nibbling on the corner of a mouldy box, snatching it by it's tail. Another one was found inside a large box full of questionable objects. The last took what felt like an eternity, as Otto chased down the rat he'd been first accosted by in the first place. It was a pursuit montage worthy of Benny Hill, with foibles on both parties on comedic levels of clumsiness.

Otto returned to the centre of the room, grasping three wriggling rats by their tails. He was out of breath and sweating buckets.

"America? I caught three of them! One of'em is the b*****d that attacked me earlier. Just try and top my score!"
