Season: Early summer Weather: Warm and slightly cloudy Players: Rainhowl and DavyJnah Summary: In which Birch the chemist meets Darkhollow the medic.
Deep within the forests of the Endless Canyon was a massive, gnarled oak with great, sweeping limbs and knobby roots protruding from the earth below. It wasn't close enough to the main platforms that the Matron manned to be considered part of the center proper, but it was close enough to be considered prime real estate. A sign was nailed into the bark of the tree just above the entrance to the old oak's cavernous hollow. It read "Cottonwood Family Remedies," which had been carefully carved into said wooden sign long ago. Cottonwood had been Birch's great grandfather's name and the business had been passed down from father to son since his great grandfather had nailed that sign into the old tree.
There had been changes since it's original inception of course. Birch's grandfather had installed a roomy platform in front of the entrance to the hollow so that there would be more room to nest inside the tree. Business was conducted on that railed platform. Birch's own father had expanded that platform to wrap around the tree's trunk and had thatched roofing over said platforms.
Birch himself hadn't done much to add on to what work had previously been done, but he was busy enough that the idea never really occurred to him. The tan furred griffin tapped his beak with a claw as he peered into the shelf cubbies that he stored his herbs in.
"Garlic, I need more garlic. I'll have to flag down a gatherer next they come by. Chamomile, too."
His hollow, just as his stocks, was as well put together as he was. That was to say quite a bit, as he prided himself on his cleanliness and quick service. A chemist's, just as a medic's, work was never truly done.

She had been gliding around when she came across the little shop. The outside was immaculate and beautiful. Cottonwood Family Remedies. Which was perfect, she could come in and get a few things from this chemist for her own stocks to use on those who needed it.
"Hello." The dark Griffin called out as she peeked inside. The smell in here was very pleasant and even the proprietor was too.
She hadn't ever looked for a chemist before, having borrowed items from others to help her with what she needed. So now it was good to maybe have a chemist she could come to for medicinal purposes. Darkhollow approached the counter. Excited to place her first order.

Birch's ears twitched at the sound of paws touching down on the shop floor and the ruffling of feathers. First customer of the day! He quite liked what he did and was chipper as he bustled up to the counter where he made his trades and transactions.
"Good morning, miss!" She was a lovely griffin and he couldn't help but to discreetly admire her well kept coat and feathers. She didn't look like a gatherer as she didn't come laden with bags of supplies for trade, which meant she was a medic or was seeking some remedy or another for personal use. A smile tugged at the edges of his beak and he straightened the decorative leaves at his throat.
"What can I help you find today?"

A handsome male seemed to have appeared right there before her eyes and she had to blink a few times in apparent shock. He was actually really lovely. His light tan and off-white coloring and was that green paint he had on his body? She was just a little envious of him. Plus what was that on his neck, a broach of some kind? Then his eyes, the last thing she noticed in his compilation of colors.
"G-Good morning sir." She patted herself down feeling rather flustered in that very moment by his arrival to the counter. "I am looking for any sort of remedy. Maybe something to coat a a wound. Something for sleep too. Oh and also something for fever." Then she though about it, something to bring and old coat back to its glistering self, "Do you also have something for ones coat, give it a little bit of a boost in color?"
It was hard not to admire him as she spoke but she felt just as glowing when she asked about the potions she might need. Despite her coloring of black and white she fit in, but she was not looked at as a usual potential mate. Which it was fine of course for her, she threw herself at work instead.

Given her inquiries, he pegged her down as a medic. Whether or not she was still training under an instructor or had been assigned to a stretch of the commonwealth he was unsure, but it didn't quite matter to him. He had always been a fidgety and chattery thing when in training and he was eager to have a chat. The black, tan, and white lady had turned up just as he was becoming bored with his own company.
"I'm sure I've got something that fits the bill here. I'm Birch, by the way, a pleasure to meet you. A medic, yes? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I've not seen you in these parts before. Granted I don't get out from this old tree as often as one would like."
As he spoke he peeled his amber gaze away (sadly!) from his new guest and shuffled towards his stocks, skimming through them.

"Oh!" Suddenly aware she was being very very rude. How dare she not introduce herself like a good Griffin would. "Medic Darkhollow at your service." Giving a few mewling sounds and clicks of her beak and a flourish of a bow, almost knocking things over with her tail. "Oh my." Snatching the offending thing in her talons. "I am so sorry. I am really nervous. I recently was assigned."
Then he was leaving and her brown eyes watched him leave to go check his stores. Black ears twitching at all the sounds trying to listen here and there what was going on. This was a terrible first meeting. She was going to mark that off somewhere that she was going to do better to not get so flustered. Why did he have to be so darn pretty?!
"By the way, its nice to meet you Birch!" That was right she was supposed to say that too. Hopeless. She had been so confident when leaving and flying here. Thinking about just picking up things.

Birch had nearly missed the young black and white griffin's bow, but her movements caught his eye and he turned his head, tilting it to one side and flicking an ear. There was good humor in his eyes, despite the near disaster from her knocking the old ceramic bowl with her tail. Nothing had spilled, nothing was broken, so he really wasn't too concerned.
"Darkhollow? That's a pretty name for a pretty griffin. It suits." He gave her a quick wink before returning to his cubbies and retrieving a few canisters. "Don't worry, though, we were all new at one point. Being assigned is a huge milestone. Congratulations! Noble profession, medic. I might have gone that route if it weren't for the shop."
He set the canisters down on the counter before his newest patron and retrieved a bag from the first. "This one is a mixture of yarrow, peppermint, and the last of my ginger. I'm afraid I've got to order in some more. It's ground up and ready to go."

Her name pretty and her too? Clearly this male didn't really think so? Though looking at his face a bit harder she could see the sincerity there. He really was giving her these wonderful compliments and he face felt hot under the feathers. Carefully she retrieved the canisters and placed them within the pouch she herself carried.
"Thank you." The female chirped. "What do I owe you?" She asked. Darkhollow did have a few trinkets in her pouch that she might be able to use for trade.

"Wellllllll-" He tapped his beak with a claw again, as he was wont to do when thinking and weighing options. There were some things he needed, but they weren't really at the foremost in his mind right now. To be very honest, he had eyes for the lady before him and part of him wanted to just give her the items free of charge. It was very tempting.
"I could use more canisters or containers, buuuuuuut I haven't had a chance to go out for something to eat yet. Have you got any stores available at your station? If not I'd happily trade the medicines for a chance to hunt with you." As if right on time, much to his chagrin, his belly gave an audible grumble. He fluffed up his feathers in mild embarrassment, but offered her his most winning smile.

The song like laugh that left her beak was fantastic. Her beautiful brown orbs seemed to glow as he asked the question of food. Of course she loved food and a hunt would sound delightful. Work up the appetite even more would be good as her stomach gave a growl.
"I am quite hungry." She answered, "I do have a way to get more canisters or containers as well." As well as offering that. Even with the invite for food from this handsome male she still felt bad not actually giving something. Since it was her personal store as opposed to getting the items she needed from the commonwealth.

Her laugh was like music to his ears and he delighted in it. He adjusted the leaves at his throat, another tic he seemed to posses, and dutifully ignored her own stomach letting out a rumble. He didn't want to embarrass the medic who had seemed to capture his heart in such a short span of time. As a grifflet he would have scoffed at the idea of love at first sight, but what was this? At the very least it was infatuation, but she seemed like a kindhearted creature and he dearly wished to get to know her.
"As useful as they are, it's lunch that keeps us going. I think griffinkind will survive for a while if I were to step out for a bite to eat. Have a place you fancy or shall we just wing it?"

She noticed the tick as he touched the leaves at his throat. It drew her attention for just a moment before she listened to him. Giving just the smallest of glares to her stomach for acting in such a way. She didn't want to jinx what it was that she was feeling about the male so she would keep it unspoken for now. Darkhollow would need just a little more time with him and lunch would help.
"Agreed. How about we wing it. I like the idea of seeing what sort of thing draws to us first." The female answered with a musical laugh. The dark female really did like this male even though she knew her colors might make it harder to find someone to settle with, but he had a look in his eye that maybe it was possible he would see past that.

"Winging it we are, then! You can leave your things in my hollow while we're out, if you'd like." He practically chirped as he flipped a open sign to read "closed" at the front of his platform. He inhaled happily and glanced out through the wood ahead. It had been an awful long time since he'd gone out on a hunt for the sheer joy of it. Sure, he could barter off some fresh kill, but it never tasted quite as good as when it was freshly caught. He had a fondness for pheasant and had half a mind to pay a visit to Marrow if he had enough meat left over for jerky.
"Shall we?" He, on all fours, bowed and extended one wing towards the exit.

The trepidation in Darkhollow's eyes as he suggested her leaving her things there made her grip the pouch gently. It wasn't that she didn't trust that nothing would happen to it, she just didn't really leave to anywhere without it. What happens if she was out and something happened? A medic was always working even when having a day off.
"I would prefer to keep it with me. If you don't mind. Its not that I don't trust it would be safe, I just like it with me." She followed him though, would be much nicer to hunt something herself. She felt almost rusty since she relied on the other hunters and gatherers.
As he asked 'shall we' she took off with easy flaps of her wings to the sky. Waiting for him to join her as she did some fancy things in the air all to happy to be on the wind. "I might be rusty." She chuckled.

"Oh no worries dear, no offense taken. I'm just a bit of a clod when trying to balance a bag and hunt. I forget not everyone is as much of a klutz as I can be." He felt a touch embarrassed and resisted an urge to fluff out and and preen his feathers. He didn't really have time to wallow in self pity, not if he wanted to enjoy this time out, away from the shop where he had spent most of his life.
Once she left the platform he gave his green painted wings a test flap or two, then launched himself off towards the ground and caught the wind and carried himself aloft. He had to admit that she was pretty good on his wings. He'd never exactly been the swiftest or the quietest flier, but he handled himself well enough.
"No worries again, times haven't exactly been lean in the hollow, if you get my drift." He chuckled as he fell in beside her, relishing the sensation of wind through his fur and feathers. "I bet I'm just as rusty, if not more. Promise I won't be scoring your hunting techniques, cross my talons."
