Antiquity: Art and Antiques

The Building itself could almost be mistaken for a nice hotel. Warm stone tiles adorn the outside, and grand arches reveal windows which display good varying from old furniture to fine jewelry. Between the windows large pots hold tall plants, everything from rose bushes to palm trees. The center arch has a sign wrought in brass: Art and Antiques. It's a very classy antique shop.

Upon entering, you find yourself in a nice gallery. White tile floor, warm cream colored walls. Art and tapestries hang all around the room, and various antique goods are on display in warmly lit glass cases. Old vases and urns, beautiful jewelry, finely carved figures inlaid with pearl and obsidian, old artisan clocks, and old books and maps are just a few of the items available to look at. Everything is clearly marked with an explanation, history, and a price. It's free to browse.

User Image - Blocked by "Display Image" Settings. Click to show."Are you here about the job?" A tall woman with dark hair addresses you. "Come, this way. We don't have time to waste, I'll give you the tour and put you to work." The tour is a whirlwind. You learn that there are multiple levels within the building, a couple below ground even. Above the First Floor gallery there are offices, and a large room where auctions are held. The underground levels are used as both restoration labs and storage. It seems the back of the building is dominated by a large loading dock.

Adelaide introduces herself as the CEO and overall head of the business. She seems a little terse - the type of woman who isn't going to abide slackers in her workforce. Some might describe her as 'prim and proper'.

"Have a seat," she says, leading you to a very nice office. It's neat and organized. Along one wall is a small collection of ancient weapons, and along another a collection of various chess boards and pieces.

"We serve as the middle man, getting clients what they want or need. Your job here will be to assist with that. In house things, of course. Field work is reserved for the most senior and trusted of us. Perhaps one day that can be you." She smiles at you. "You were here about the job, right?"

Welcome to Antiquity: Art and Antiques! Adelaide is in charge here, and she rules with a gentle smile backed by an iron fist and probably a few knives.

To the public view - it's simply a classy antique shop. They are known for being able to track down rare items, helping people with money fill out collections.

All of this is a front (and a hobby, really) to mask the true business: Deals in illegal arms and weapons. They sell, transport, and supply all manner of firearms and other weapons.

There are kittens on the premises. They are human world animals and may not be taken to dusk, However, feel free to play with them in the shop!
They are: The black and white one is Socks. The grey one is Cloudeater, the other grey one is Velociraptor, the orange one is Banna, the cinnamon one is Cinnimon. gaia_kittenstar

gaia_star A reminder to go here on how to take on a job!

[ JOB LISTINGS ]

Quote:
[ JOB LISTING ] Assistant Sales Clerk
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star
[ TASK ] The key word here is Assistant. You will be helping with the front of house operations and other minor tasks. Roll 2d4. The first die chooses the task for the day, the second die is the 'event'. RP accordingly! Events can be major or minor, it is up to you. (If I roll 2,4, then I have task 2, and the 4 dictates my event.)

  1. Adelaide would like you to watch the front of house. It's not terribly difficult, as customers usually just come in to browse and - Oh, no. That woman over there isn't watching her three children and they've decided to play tag among the priceless, delicate displays. Event: If your second dice is odd the children nearly break a vase. If it is even they pull a tapestry off the wall.

  2. "Here is the duster. This cleaner is for glass, this one for the shelves." As the newest member of the team, the tedious task of dusting everything in the main gallery falls to you. Try not to break anything, and remember: Adelaide is looking for a streak-free shine! Event: If your second dice is odd you have trouble with some greasy fingerprints on glass. If it is even Adelaide isn't pleased with your work and asks you to do it again (just rp no rolling!)

  3. Coffee run! Adelaide is requesting one mid-sized cafe mocha, extra chocolate and whipped cream, as well as six other drinks for various staff and clients. Her favourite coffee place is two blocks down the street. "Oh, and don't forget a half dozen of their triple-chocolate muffins." Event: If your second die is odd the coffee shop clerk gives you too much change. If it is even the coffee shop clerk winks at you, slipping an extra muffin into the to-go bag.

  4. Unloading duty. A shipment has arrived and your job is to help unload the truck. There are 20 wooden crates, weighing anything from 2 pounds to as much as you. Event: If your second dice is odd as your reach for a box a large rat crawls out the box and up your arm. If it is even nearly all of the boxes are very heavy.

[ JOB LISTING ] Restoration Apprentice
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star
[ TASK ] You seem competent enough that Adelaide is willing to trust you with some of the more delicate work that goes on in the shop. Namely the handling of some goods she's gotten her hands on. It's either dirty or broken and needs a quick fix and a small polish. "You'll be in the basement today, follow me." Roll 1d10 to find out which object you get to work with.

If you roll 1-3
Adelaide hands you a small wooden crate. Inside are several delicately wrapped pottery pieces. "They're Greek. They're old. Be careful with them." Your job is simple. Re-assemble an urn using some special adhesive made for such things.

First Step: Separate the pieces. Roll 5 d6. You will have to do this at least twice. You are looking to get a 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 - in any order. You just need one of each. Once you have all six, you have your pieces!

Second Step: Simply RP matching them up/gluing them together. (this can be done in the same post as your last piece roll)

If you roll 4-7
You are given a painting to clean. Adelaide hands you a box of q-tips, a bottle of water, and a few very fine and soft towels. "It's a spit shine we are going for. Yes, spit." She gestures at the painting. "It's one of the very best things for cleaning old oil paintings like this one. Wet the q-tip, use it till it's dirty, then get a new one." She points at a table with a stool. "Get started." Roll 1 d20 to see what Adelaide thinks of your work. RP accordingly.

If your roll was 1-10:
--You work on the painting for no more than 5 minutes before Adelaide interrupts you. "You are pushing too hard. It's a light touch. Feather light." She watches you to make sure you get it right.
-----Look at the 1 d20 roll again. (no need to reroll)
-------If even she nods. "Yes. Just like that," she says with a smile. "Excellent work." You get to spend the next few hours painstakingly cleaning the painting.
-------If odd she shakes her head and sighs. "No. Lightly. Just," she puts her hand over her face and inhales. "Just go over there and watch how Remus is doing it." You get to spend the rest of the day observing.

If your roll was 11-20:
--Adelaide watches you work for a few minutes before nodding and walking away. It seems she trusts you to complete the task - so you spend the next couple of hours on it.
-----Look at the 1 d20 roll again. (no need to reroll)
-------If even after two hours, just as you are about half way done with the painting, Adelaide returns. "Yes, you are doing very well, indeed." She smiles warmly, and then sets down a second painting, even larger than the first. "I expect this one to be done after you complete the first." She nods and walks away.
-------If odd after two hours, Adelaide returns and leans over your work. "Oh dear. Oh no." She looks at you and her eyes are cold. "It's not bad, but it's not good enough. Start again. The colors should be vibrant and bright after you've gone over them." She leaves you alone with your work.

If your roll was 8-10

"Here," Adelaide says, leading you to a quiet corner with a table and some cleaning supplies. "I need you to take care of what's in the box."

Roll 1 d100 and look inside the box:

If your roll ends in 0 or 5

---The box holds several knives, all covered in blood. "They need cleaned, I expect a like-new shine. They are old, so be gentle with them." She glances at the box them back at you. "I expect discretion. We do not worry about what clients do outside of our store." She gives you a dangerous smile and walks away.
----If the roll ended in 0, you cut yourself at least once. (If it ended in 5 the cut is up to you.)

If your roll ends in 2, 4, 6, or 8

---The box holds a large amount of gold and silver coins. They are tarnished and covered in much and water deposits. "We are cleaning them for a client who found them off the coast." She doesn't say which coast. "They are indeed pirate gold. I expect them to be cleaned and as polished as you can make them." She nods once, then walks away.

---When you are finished, Adelaide inspects your work.
-----If your roll ended in 2 or 4: "Good work. Now, empty your pockets. All of them." She winks at you. "It's company policy."
-----If your roll ended in 6 or 8: "Could be better. I'll have Harv give them another once over." She glances at you. "Now empty your pockets. Company policy."
(No, you can't steal the coins.)

If your roll ended in 1, 3, 7, or 9

--The box is full of kittens. "These were found in the alley out back last week. We've still had no sign of the mother, and I have to be out of the office all day. You are on kitten sitting duty." Adelaide hands you some kitten food and some small dishes. "Don't panic, they are old enough for kitten food, no bottle feeding unless you really want to. Don't let them out of your sight." She leaves you alone with 5 kittens.

No extra dice rolling, just RP your character babysitting 5 kittens in the corner of a basement. gaia_kittenstar

[ JOB LISTING ] Inventory Manager
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star gaia_star
[ TASK ] Monitor and list all incoming and outgoing inventory.

"Okay, look," Adelaide seems very irritated. "We just had two trucks come in and drop off their goods. Those nincompoops," she points at two part-timers, "unloaded everything without marking things down." Eight large boxes are sitting on the dock.

She hands you a clip-board. "I need you to check each box's invoice and decide where it goes. If the invoice says 'Cavalry' you just put an X here," she points to the bottom left corner of the paper, "and have those boobs stack it over there. Don't actually count Cavalry boxes in the total number of boxes on the form. If it says anything else on the box, I need you to open it and make sure the invoice matches. Fill out your report when you're done."

Roll 8 d4: These are the boxes, and there are 8 of them. For each box follow the instructions below and RP accordingly.
--If you roll doubles, it means you have two of that particular box and need to follow it's instructions twice. Same with triples, etc.

  1. This box says it holds one complete silver dinner set. Roll 1 d10 to see what's missing.

    -----If you roll a:
    -------1. Everything is there.
-------2. It is missing the gravy boat.
-------3. Two spoons are no where to be found.
-------4. One serving platter is listed, but not in the box.
-------5. Three forks have magically disappeared.
-------6. One spoon and on butter knife are missing.
    -------7. Everything is there.
    -------8. Two plates are missing.
-------9. There are NO forks in this set. WHAT?!
-------10. Everything is there, but the large serving platter has a huge gouge on it. Best make a note.

  2. This box is supposed to hold on large grandfather clock. Best check for damages. Roll 1 d6. If even it's in perfect condition. If odd the glass on the front is broken. You had better make a note.

  3. Three large tapestries from the year 1400. Roll 1 d4. If you roll a 1 or 2, one tapestry is missing. If you roll a 3, they all have water damage. If you roll a 4, everything looks good!

  4. This box is labeled "Cavalry". No need to check the contents, simply RP ordering the part-timers to stack it in the corner.

When you are done checking all 8 boxes, fill out the form below and post it in your last post.

Liya had finished her very first part time job and was feeling giddy from excitement. Sure it had mostly involved opening boxes, checking the things inside the boxes, ordering the other part-timers around to move the boxes, all in all she hadn't done anything that would reasonably given her cause for that wide, wild-eyed grin. But Liya was a simple Horseman. Simple things made her happy. Like getting the first blow in a spar, getting first choice of food, and accomplishing something (no matter how mundane) for the very first time.

She also did have a couple of questions for Adelaide, "Hiiiii~ Forgive me if I'm stepping outta line but I wanted to know if you have any sort of background checks for those movers? Or, like, a quality evaluation on their skills? Aaaand if you did, have you considered using stricter measures?"

Adelaide looked up from the clipboard in her hand, her eyes settling on Liya and very clearly appraising her. After a moment she smiled. "Oh no," she set the clipboard aside, "not out of line at all. Those are just the sort of questions I like to hear my employees asking. It shows a knowledge of leadership."

Her smile was replaced by a frown. "As for those two buffoons - Well. They started like most of my employees start. At the bottom doing little things in an attempt to show me they are trustworthy and competent. The job itself is the test. They have failed," she ended dryly.

"It truly is hard to find good help these days." Another sigh. A pause.

Adelaide's gaze fixed on Liya again. "Liya, was it? Are you interested in a career in antiques?"

"Yup! Liya's right," she answered, eyes crinkling from her smile. She looked thoughtful at Adelaide's question, pursing her lips and making little hmmmm sounds. "Honestly I never really gave it much thought. I mean I liked carrying things around, woulda preferred it more if I'd been asked to move the boxes and crate, y'know?" She chuckled. "Course I'da been more careful since the stuff in it's supposed to be old and fragile. But that's not what you're asking, is it?"

Liya didn't think she fit in the world of art and antiques. She didn't really understand what made something art and what just made it trying hard to be art. "Dunno how well I'd be at, like, selling the stuff. But if you were looking for someone to go into security I wouldn't say no."

Adelaide smiled. "You've got a good head on your shoulders, Liya. You know when things should be handled with care, and you know when there are layers in a question. Just the kind of people I need around here."

She looked thoughtful. "Make sure you hang around and see if you can try out a few of the roles here. I do like my employees to know all aspects of the business, even if they specialize in just one. But you needn't worry, sales is usually... the least active part of the business."

Another smile. "Have you ever worked security before? Are you familiar with weaponry? Not that we use it often, but sometimes we do have valuable things around."

At the question about her involvement in security, the earlier smile widened (if such a thing was possible) almost to the point you could call her deranged. "Oh yes, security is one of my favorite type of tasks, you get to work with a squad, get to hone your focus, and depending on what aspect of security, you even get to meet all sorts!" She was certainly enthusiastic about it, and even looked somewhat relieved that sales did not play that big of a role.

She was certainly friendly enough but it was also very likely she would unnecessarily fuss over the customers to the point they'd complain to management. "Familiar like using them? I mean, most know which end you should hold and which end you try to bury in your enemy's body," she giggled, amused with her own joke. "Or did you mean familiar like studying them and who made them based on design and material?" She had to admit learning about the Clans' different preferences in terms of weaponry was fun and fascinating but she would always fall back on her go-to FEAR projected weapons.

"Oh! I also wanted to ask how you felt about referral programs, like if blood ties are any issue? We're not Conquest so family members don't get special perks just 'cuz they're family but I wonder if that also applies here?"

Rayu oozed into the shop. Didn't one of the other war ponies work here? He didn't remember which one but he thought he might bother them for a bit. He brought Some good drinks from The tower. It must be boring to stay out here all day and not have something to drink.

"Hey." he waved to Adelaide and then scooted up next to her. "Brought you something from home." he passed her a strong drink. Yes he was claiming her, and possibly the whole shop while he was at it.

"So this is your shop?" had he been in here before? Maybe he was doing something at some point, he didn't remember. Wait he did, it was inventory. Yes it was better that he brought the drink, inventory had not gone well for him. He made sure not to bring that up. He didn't need to remind her of the order that was missing almost half of everything.

"Looks nice, anything good happening lately?"

"Haha! That IS the most important thing to know about weapons." She seemed to appreciate Liya's joke. "Know more than that can certainly be learned, given time and interest. If you are interested in pursuing a career in security I might be able to lead you in the right direction." Her smile was sweet as honey.

"Hm." Adelaide tilted her head slightly. "A referral from someone I trust means more to me than blood. Kinship is important, of course. Knowing I can trust someone means the world around here. Any particular reason you ask?" She raised one dark eyebrow.

Adelaide, being a practiced business woman, was more than happy to deal with several people at once. Especially when they were kin. She smiled at Liya before turning to Rayu.

"Oh, hello. Why, thank you." If she knew he was 'claiming' anything, she might have been a bit more stern. "It is my shop. Has been for a while now, glad you like it."

She frowned slightly. "I found some kittens that need caring for. They are cute and I think that is very good."

"Oooo you have human pets? Can I see?" that sparked an interest. Yep he liked this friend. She was his friend now. War needed to stick together after all. All the better to increase their skills after all.

"Oh hey liya." his partner in crime got a small wave. He probably should have paid more attention when he walked in. what were they talking about? weapons? Good stuff. But at the moment he was more interested in kittens. Kitten and cute things. Were they scary too?

Chao smiled as she saw a familiar face when she walked into the antiques store. She was trying to think watch job she wanted to take. The Inventory Management was not something she wanted to try again.

“Hi Liya!” She waved to the girl who she had sorted the inventory with.

The shop owner speaking caught Chao’s attention as well as the enthusiasm of the horseman next her. So the owner had found kittens? Those where humans minipets, she was curious about them. She hopped that they owner would let them see the kittens.

“May I see them as well?” She asked politely

Liya was about to explain to Adelaide why she'd gotten on the topic of family and recommendations when who should show up but extended family. She would have to ask her original question for later, it was one of those rare few times where Liya wanted to maintain a level of privacy. "It can wait," she said as Chao joined their little group. Liya wasn't often one for discretion but some people just deserved it more than others.

"Yoooo~" she greeted Rayu and Chao. Her own interest in the kittens was sparked, and even she got in on the request, "Do you collect these kittens?"

Liya was given a knowing nod. There would be time later. Adelaide was going to be keeping an eye on this one, after all.

"I would love to show them to you!" Her smile was wide as she nodded at all three.

"Right this way." Adelaide ushered them all into her office. Under the stand where she held several old battle axes and one very large spear, there was a box.

"These,"
she said reaching into the box, "are my kittens. I found them and they are now the mascots of my shop."

There were five. One black with white socks, one orange, two gray with white spots, and one the color of cinnamon. They were small, they were adorable. "Here, you can each hold one." She held them out to the group.

Rayu was officially the happiest horseman ever. Especially when he was allowed to pick up the cinnamon colored kitten. "It's tiny, look at it's little teeth." He held it in a scareling position because that seemed like the right thing to do with the tiny minipet like creatures. This was HIS now.

It was too bad that all previous attempts to take home living creatures had ended in disaster, because he would totally take this one home. Perhaps the hop was the best place for it. but you'd better believe he would be visiting.

"And you know how to feed them? Human world minis can be difficult to care for. They die so easily."
