▐ LOCATION Flagship store and HQ

The flagship store of PHE is renowned throughout the world as a destination to visit. Even with the rise of internet shopping consumers often make the journey to visit the headquarters just to say they have been there. After all being part of The Herd as aficionados of the company’s merchandise have become known is as much about lifestyle as it is about the technology. The building itself is an impractical and sleek white affair, with minimalist white interiors and maximum use of glass, pine and sans serif fonts. Everything about it seems open, visible and inviting. The frontage conceals the enormous sprawling warehouse and office complex out back, inaccessible to the many consumers making their tech pilgrimage and retrieving their coveted pilgrim user access upgrade to the PHE store.

PHE is also known for their devout charity work and pristine public image, seen as an exemplary company both to work for and in the field of innovation. They are in the process of negotiating plans to build a theme park on these themes. They have come a long way in their branding from the smiling white pony of the early 80s to the present running horse logo nicknamed Shadowfax by the Herd.

The smiling minimalist front to the company conceals what goes on behind the white doors in the maintenance stables (where people bring their machines for repair) and sales rooms, behind closed doors machines, phones and notebooks are fitted with tracking software and nigh undetectable software alterations. This also goes on in an industrial scale in the hardware they provide to commercial businesses. This uniquely positions PHE in a way that lets them control data flow through intranets and the internet as a whole. They serve the aims of all four clans as an intermediary, censoring events where required and spinning social media in a way that suits the collective.

They offer jobs to technology minded horsemen, finding ways to control and monitor data flows, tracing risks to the clans before they begin, as well as subtly altering and moderating social media, using their tech and in-built software to utilise the internet of things to DDOS undesirable competitors to their plans.

▐ THE PRODUCTS The jewels in the crown

The hPhone, the hPad, pretty much anything a well known fruit based retailer sells has a counterpart in this company. Plus feel free to make things up.

▐ OOC Please note this in your posts

For the purposes of rp, the building is split into three areas, when rping, please note which area you are hanging around in -

▐▐ WAREHOUSE AND MANUFACTURING>> This is the part of the building where they store their various wares, horsemen who work here are chosen for their strength and endurance and do not need to be fit for an outward or public facing role. Of course the tech minded are also welcome here as some metal manufacturing and development happens here. Think good old fashioned anvil and forge crafting, what Death clan is good at.

▐▐ THE STORE>> The store has two main areas "The Stable" which is where repairs are carried out (and spy technology fitted) and the sales floor and showroom. Horsemen working in these area tend to be very proficient in human culture and are those most adapted to working with and convincing humans to part with their tech and their cash.

▐▐ THE OFFICES>> This is where all the online activities go on and the hub of the data management and funnelling activities between the various national hubs of the company. Tech minded horsemen work here and as this is the only all-horseman area, appearance is not enforced at all.

▐ TYR LARSSSON Philanthropist

Tyr Larrsson is a well known public figure, almost always dressed in an unassuming way, he is known for rejecting the traditional suits and ties approach to business on a large scale. Many an article has been written on his grassroots approach to business, always determined to have a retail outlet as part of headquarters so that he can be a constant part of the business they do, both front end and back end. He is often seen working in or visiting the flagship store and this can be part of why the fans of the brand often visit.

He is well liked by the employees as he takes a very reward-based proactive approach to both pay and career advancement and the discounts on the products themselves are significant.

On occasion, when they hire at headquarters he will be part of the interview process and induction, this is to ensure that he is aware of these processes as they are rolled out across the rest of the business as a whole.

Recruitment is done via a combination of agencies and internal referrals. It is not commonly publicised but almost everyone working at the flagship store is in fact a horseman.

▐ OOC Always open

Tyr is known for his door always open policy. If you want to speak to him, feel free to either stop by his office (linked) or speak to him in and around the building (quote Baneful).

Feel free to choose any career "path" below for your horseman, any of these are doable and it is fine to hop between jobs within the organisation.

▐ RETAIL Caring for the Herd

Quote:

[ JOB LISTING ] Greeter
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star

[ TASK ]
As a greeter in the store part of Horse, it is your job to greet members of the Herd as they enter, welcoming them to the end of the technological pilgrimage. It is your job to make sure they get their exclusive web store upgrade and if required, show them where the bathrooms are and validate their parking.

Anywhere else it's not an exclusive job, here at Horse though, it is a privilege!

Be nice to the humans customers, our reputation depends on it.

[ MECHANICS ]
Roll 1d6 twice, each roll is half the day.

  1. You run into an extremely socially awkward customer who wants to get the signature of everyone in the showroom and have to carefully talk them out of it because people are busy.
  2. A belligerent mother shows up demanding that you fix her hPhone which "isn't working properly", she has somehow set it to airplane mode. Either you help her fix it or you direct her to the stable.
  3. You greet someone entering the shop and for whatever reason they think that your choice of greeting or tone is offensive and give you a lecture on "proper etiquette"
  4. A celebrity visitor has arrived to the store and you are stuck herding their entourage and fans around for half a day
  5. Someone on the way in drops a very sticky drink all over the floor and you are tasked with mopping it up like a janitor.
  6. You run into Tyr in the shop either quote Baneful to chat to him or simply assume that he was very friendly and gave you a voucher for the store.

[ JOB LISTING ] Salesman
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star

[ TASK ]
As a part time salesman in the store, you will help to part customers with their money and sell them our products. Upselling is rewarded only when it is subtle, after all Horse isn't a crass establishment, we sell a lifestyle, not just a product!

Commission is generous and the rewards are many.

[ MECHANICS ]
Roll 1d6 twice, each roll is half the day.

  1. - For whatever reason it seems someone who is enamoured with a competitor's brand has come in just to argue with you about their merits and not buy anything at all.
  2. - The sale is very easy indeed, after all your customer is dressed in branded clothing and came here with plenty of money, you even sell them some accessories at three times the markup.
  3. - This sale is all right, the person doesn't want much and no amount of convincing them seems to get anywhere, they buy a case for their existing product and leave
  4. - Tyr stops by while you are making a very tough sell and the customer is so distracted by meeting the CEO that they relent and spend more than they intended to, even taking out some insurance on their product.
  5. - Customer wastes your time by seeming very interested for most of the morning, asking about every single product on sale, going through tests and examples and ultimately saying they will "come back tommorow" as they leave.
  6. - An older customer is getting rid of their hugely outdated phone and is only too happy to take you up on the latest hPhone along with lessons for it

[ JOB LISTING ] Tech Support
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star gaia_star

[ TASK ]
As one of our clever ponies at the tech Stable, your job is to fix customer's technology and troubleshoot it while making as much money as possible, making sure to fit and maintain our monitoring implants and software in the process.

[ MECHANICS ]
Roll 1d6 twice, each roll is half the day.

  1. - The hardware you are brought is a complete mess, it's screen is cracked in a way you can't replace, it simply won't boot correctly or it has been in some sort of terrible sticky accident. All you can do is commemorate its memory and send the customer over to your colleague on the shop floor, losing your commission in the process.
  2. - The fix is easy, the customer isn't very tech savvy and had simply tripped a background setting without meaning to, you can fix it in five minutes but those five minutes cost them dearly.
  3. - Somehow this customer has managed to break the monitoring process on their device, taking them off of the collective data grid, this has in essence bricked their tech, they bring it to you, you easily reinstall the spyware and they are on their way.
  4. - Some piece of hardware needs replaced, it is easily done but you tell them it will take 24 hours and charge them incredible prices for the part they need.
  5. - The customer wants nothing more than to talk to you about the store, the products, the CEO and everything else and none of your social hints to go away seem to work on them, delaying you in your work for half the morning
  6. - The hardware is outdated but somehow you get it running again, Tyr stops by and offers the customer a discount on an upgrade to a more modern product which they take and end up spending a great deal more than they meant to that day on in-store financing.

▐ WAREHOUSE Delivering stock and innovation.

Quote:

[ JOB LISTING ] Fork Lift Driver
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star

[ TASK ]
Though not a glamorous job it is an important one at HQ, with the heavy forklift operators dealing with more than simply pallets of product. In the headquarters they also handle blocks of raw ore and steel, ferrying these to the metalworkers in the research shops behind the warehouse itself. Some horsemen prefer this line of work as it does include quite a bit of manual labour and climbing through the warm and lofty rafters in a reminiscent echo of the jungle.

[ MECHANICS ]
Roll 1d6 twice, each roll is half the day.

  1. You spend a morning trying to figure out how the forklift even works, if you've driven it before you are on a model you've never even seen before.
  2. You drive into a huge stack of boxes and are relieved to see that they at least were empty, you spend the day trying to tidy them up.
  3. Things are very busy in the warehouse, you are rushed off your feet driving back and forth ferrying deliveries and before you know it is over.
  4. Things are quiet for a change and you get a chance to sneak to the rest room to chat to your coworkers.
  5. A secret delivery comes in a back door and is taken away by a group of Death horsemen in the direction of the warehouse workshops, you are thanked for your assistance.
  6. You get into an awkward conversation with co-workers and slink off back to your forklift to try and forget the discussion.

[ JOB LISTING ] Assistant Metalworker
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star gaia_star

[ TASK ]
The metalworkers are a side division of Horse, a place for Death horsemen and other crafting inclined clans members to test out new blends of materials for potential use in their products and to help supply neighbouring horseman front businesses with better materials for weapons and other creations.

As a part time metalworker you get to work under the master smiths and craft. It is hot, tough unpleasant work but it is what floats some people's boat.

[ MECHANICS ]
Roll 1d6 twice, each roll is half the day.

  1. - You mix in the molten metals in the forge as instructed but the result doesn't blend properly and when it cools you are left with a cracked mess and a very disappointed supervisor.
  2. - Following the instructions works out really well and you get a bar of some of the nicest purest metal you have ever seen.
  3. - Filling in a large metal mould for the manufacture of an important part goes off without a hitch, and you are given a big smile rather than the usual scolding.
  4. - Tyr is stopping by and you can either explain your days work to him (by Quoting Baneful) or you can assume he was really into it and took note of your name for potential promotions in future.
  5. - Everything goes really badly, no matter what you do the anvil doesn't like you, the forge hates you and everything you try to do is fraught with problems. -
  6. - You get to finish early for lunch or heading home as all the tasks for the day are completed in record time.

As one of the engineers it is your job to help apply the work of the metalworkers into new technology and develop products to better observer humanity and reap their data. This is where the hardware side of development goes on, though some software is tested at this level.

[ MECHANICS ]
Roll 1d6 twice, each roll is half the day.

  1. - You set up a complex motherboard array, newly developed peripheral, hardware or something else in development and yet when it is plugged in, for no discernible reason you can figure out it shorts out and goes on fire.
  2. - You come up with a more efficient way of drawing heat away from hot machinery in a flat plane, if you have already rolled this, you simply develop this further.
  3. - Somehow you accidentally stumble upon a means of pulling data from a data line without being easily detectible
  4. - You help to develop the ability to make everything smaller, phones, cables and spying devices.
  5. - You spend all of your shift trying to figure out the problems with a complex circuit and even with the help of your supervisors, no process is made at all.

▐ OFFICE Maintaining our networks

Quote:

[ JOB LISTING ] Errand runner
[ DIFFICULTY LEVEL ] gaia_star

[ TASK ]
The simplest and also in some ways the most demeaning job in the office sector, errand runners often end up being sent to make drinks, collect food and generally find people who aren't at their desk. When they aren't being sent here and there sometimes they get to do some basic processing of information but this is rare. Mostly they are stuck running all over the office and sometimes down to the warehouses.

It's a living and every job contributes to the Horseman family!

[ MECHANICS ]
Roll 1d6 twice, each roll is half the day.

  1. You are sent to make a variety of drinks for half the office. Being horsemen these range from elaborate teas for the conquest traditionalists to strange concoctions for war. It takes absolutely ages.
  2. You are sent on a run down to the warehouse to find out an update on one of the ongoing projects. Finding the head engineer is a task in itself and eats up half your time.
  3. Things are quiet for a change and you get some time to look over the social networks the company monitors but you don't need to do anything major, it's someone else's problem
  4. Everyone wants breakfast/lunch so its time to go out to the nearby shops to get every single horseman's order of food, it takes for ever.
  5. The water cooler is broken and you get stuck trying to fix it.
  6. Sent over to Tyr's office to tell him a message you get praised for your hard work and he says he's heard about your efforts to the company. Feel free to quote Baneful if you want a proper rped discussion or stop by his office.

[ TASK ]
Horse maintains a sprawling social media presence both to control public attitudes towards the brand and to gather information in general for the company, they have tendrils in every single major social media website across the globe and can control even political developments through this technology.

This is the hub of where these operations occur and information is freely shared and funnelled to other interested horsemen organisations. Your task is helping to maintain the more grassroots level of this operation and to stir up things a little on the human front.

[ MECHANICS ]
Roll 1d6 twice, each roll is half the day.

  1. - You accidentally get drawn into a chain of comments arguing a pointless discussion and waste several hours.
  2. - A few carefully deleted and altered comments turns the tide of a discussion in your favour leaving people praising Horse when the chain was formerly a complaint.
  3. - You are tasked with sorting through a huge list of data pulled by the montoring systems and looking for anything which might indicate some manner of dissidence or threat to the horsemen.
  4. - You spend several hours modifying instagram photos which hint at the precence of horsemen to discredit them.
  5. - You accidentally miss a post which starts a twitter argument about unfair business practices in the Horse company.

  3. - You spend all day helping to set up a large bot net for an attack by another division.
  4. - You help to develop one of the major projects going on at the HQ and it all goes nice and well.
  5. - You write a huge swathe of code using the helper program but somewhere in the 5000 lines is an unclosed tag which you must find.

Pale Horse was open for business and with a small gala they’d decided to open their recruitment day, there were a few games, a high tech ferris wheel and a few other typical midway fairground rides with a pale horse modern twist. The doors were open and customers were beginning to filter in and were being tended to by the employees.

Meanwhile on the other side of the store, in the enclosed area which was designated horsemen only, there was a small event strictly for those from the clans. It was here that Tyr was mingling before heading out into the larger human attended event, allowing himself a bit of relaxation before changing into his human guise.

A tall horseman Tyr slouched somewhat when he wasn’t trying to impress humans and dressed for the most part in slightly scuffed black armour when not wearing fashionable sweaters and trousers. He was greying about the hair, though it was always neat and tidy.

He flitted from horseman to horseman asking what sort of things they would like to see in the next generation of hPhones.

”Bonus Task Prompt”

For something to write in the ORP you can either speak to Tyr in person or have your horseman fill in the below questionnaire

- What features would you like to see in the new hPhone

- What do you use your phone for

- Are there any features you find very important in technology for your clan

- Have you ever done any part time work for our company?

- If yes, how would you improve this going forward?

It wasn't obvious on the Jewelry Maker's face that he had to work up the courage to approach Tyr, but those who knew Terr would be able to tell. There was a tension in his stance and a stiffness to his shoulders that weren't normally present. He wasn't dressed as opulently as some of the other Horsemen and humans present, but the pieces of jewelry he was adorned in were intricate and ornate in their design. But most importantly he had been the one to design the pieces and bring them into existence.

He could only hope they would prove worth Tyr's time. There was only one way to find out. He strode up to the assisting heir and bade him, "Greetings, Lo-" he stopped himself and somehow transitioned to "Tyr. I don't know if you remember me or my work, but I'm Terr. My performance during the part time job for the Metalwork department recommended I personally discuss the possibility of a permanent position."

To Terr's credit, his voice was its usual even monotone despite his nervousness. With all the scareflies currently fluttering in his stomach, Terr might as well be from Famine.

Tyr had very strong feelings about his own clan, deeply invested in how the clan of Death grew and developed, devoted to their cause and willing to do anything it took to support them. However, he was far from xenophobic, never someone who turned away talent regardless of what sort of shape it came in. He was even happy to work with humans in certain arms of his company, finding many of them to be both capable and intelligent in their own way. Talent was power and it was the thing he wanted most of all to help bolster his company and the greater ends of the four clans themselves.

He smiled at the cut off honorific, a genuine friendly smile. He could see the other man was tense and this was endearing. People who cared about their work cared about what others thought of it. “Ah yes!” he said. “Your supervisor mentioned a particularly talented part timer to me, I remembered the name. Absolutely I have heard of you.”

Wanting to put the other man at ease a little he spoke slowly, his posture completely relaxed. “I would love for you to continue to work for the company, we are always looking for up and coming metalworkers. If you would like to become a full time apprentice of the metalworker who recommended you to me I would be very happy to support that!”

A small part of his instinct told him that he was in the wrong neighborhood. Merope waded his way through the human crowds, nearly tripping over the extra large baggy pants he wore. Several of his belts dragged on the ground behind him as he all but swam through the cloth towards the horseman only area.

The misplaced wannabe skater boy looked around nervously, feeling like a fish in a pool of sharks. To pass the time, he filled out the questionnaire --

- What features would you like to see in the new hPhone
Waterproof casing please!

- What do you use your phone for?
Mainly texting. Some picture-taking, but mainly too much texting.

- Are there any features you find very important in technology for your clan?
Conquest is usually all about elegance. Me? I need something durable to stand up to my, uh, clumsiness. And things.

- Have you ever done any part time work for our company?
Yes! I socialed the media! I got really distracted by arguing with humans, so I stayed after to make up for it.

- If yes, how would you improve this going forward?
Improve what going forward, how socialing the media works? I'm not sure it can be improved, but being able to change other people's words was very helpful!

-- then figured he might as well go for it. It wasn't as if he was going to do anything else today (aside from working out how to do a sweet kick-flip but first he had to figure out how to stop tripping over his belts. Maybe another trip to a human clothing store was in order, followed by another trip to another store to replace the vase his last kickflip broke).

"Excuse me," he said as he approached Tyr and Terr. One hand was fishing in one of his many pockets, and continued to fish for several minutes after. At last he pulled out a phone. "I found this in the Dusk and, uh, I have a couple questions about it... namely how can I bypass the password to find the owner, and how can I get rid of the eviden- er, how can I fix it if it happens to have fallen into tea. If it has. Not that it has or anything recently like that or... what have you..." He trailed off, gulping.

Terr's chest swelled in pride at Tyr's response, uncaring of the pressure this meant in maintaining that reputation. The jewelry maker was not one to shirk from duties. He nodded and was about to ask for further details on what else was required of him for apprenticeship (was he going to need a portfolio? Did he require reviews from his peers? the list went on) when someone from Conquest arrived.

The Death Horseman's train of thought was thankfully not derailed by the interruption. He simply filed it away for later, instead adopting a neutral stance, which essentially looked exactly like his earlier stance only his hands were loosely at his side instead of tense and rigid.

"How long ago was said phone dropped in tea?" he asked, not because he knew how to fix it (he didn't) but because it was the only question Terr logically thought to ask.

Tanita was heading out to leave, after a successful day in the Tech Support side of the Store, when she noticed Tyr himself, a Death horseman she was utterly unfamiliar with and... Oh dear, Merope. It looked like her fellow horseman, and perhaps even friend, was after some assistance with the phone again. She pondered what to do, before politely walking up, and giving a half bow to Tyr. "Sir, I wanted to thank you for the opportunity to work in your Tech Support department today. It was an honor, and a very useful learning experience." She then stepped back, and gave Merope an encouraging smile. It seemed to her that he was living up to her belief in him. After all, he was doing everything he could to find the proper owner of the phone, and he was also trying to see if there was anything that needed doing to repair the phone.

She did not, however, offer to fix it herself. After all, she was off duty... And she felt this particular fix was probably well past her skill level. The fixes she had today were all quite simple, really, and she was amazed that she had been needed. Perhaps if more of them were like the sort of fix that Merope's problem might need, she could see why they would need as many 'ponies in the stable' as they had. "Merope... It is good to see you." She murmured quietly to him, so as not to interfere with whatever came up next. She also gave the unknown horseman a smile, to try to show that she wasn't trying to interfere.

Terr did not miss the greeting between the two Conquest Horsemen. And while the new comer might not have wanted to steal the spotlight, the Death Horseman was actually more than happy to let someone else do the talking. He didn't know what to do to fix the phone, he was more likely to make a case for the phone than the insides. Oh, he should file that idea away for later, maybe try to incorporate additional features into the case?

And even if he wasn't going to end up making a case for said phone, he was liable to make the phone go up in flames, as per his last job at Pale Horse showed. Terr still couldn't figure out how or why that particular setup would suddenly catch fire like that. Surely there was a problem with the design? Blinking, he focused his thoughts back to the present.

"I see you two are familiar with each other, I believe I am at a disadvantage." he stated evenly.

Vin was familiar with tech only as far as what was used to maintain tanks and specimen holding areas. There were a few gadgets used to document data that he had to enter information into, but he tended to prefer his physical binders and notepads if he had the option. This was only a problem if he decided to work outside of the Tower, though a few horsemen did curl up their noses (if they even had the flesh for them) if he so much as brought out a piece of paper and a pen that was't a stylus. It was getting to him to some degree, and he knew he did have to be better acclimated to technology as humans made it such a visual and commonplace part of their lives. Someone without one became a outcast which was the opposite of their goals in the clans.

He arrived in the one place known for it's technology and went in to the horsemen area and was given a survey for the particular needs for the clans, and he settled down to take a survey.

What features would you like to see in the new hPhone?
More games please and spreadsheets for recording information. Data sheets are great when we're not in the labs.

- What do you use your phone for?
We send messages to friend and keep notes. We also like Disease Inc game.

- Are there any features you find very important in technology for your clan?
We like to know what humans have as not having a phone is strange to them. We try to use our phone outside so that humans know we have one and do not find us weird. All phones start to look different too so best phone to impress humans seem to be best for being liked by them.

- Have you ever done any part time work for our company?
We have not but we are looking into helping. We do not know much to fit into business but would like to see more about it since it is very important to have around.
