Slipping into the Catfe felt familiar now, almost homey. Ash remembered when the place had opened, but how long had it been open for business now?

Slipping through the special cat door, she lifted her nose to the smells of coffee and other cats. It teased her and her tail rose to curl like a question mark over her back. Small paws carried her forward with silent little steps, though with the hum of conversation and the whir of the espresso machine, it was pretty doubtful anyone would have heard anything short of a shout from back here.

Time got away from her once in a while. Things that happened in a very short time felt like years, while years passed without her knowing it. It was a strange feeling, though not as strange, or as immediate, as the nakedness she felt when she slipped her visor and necklace off to leave them on the table in the back. She could have been any silver Burmilla when she emerged and trotted towards the front, if any Burmilla came with a golden star on their forehead.

Green eyes searched the room from knee height for the familiar blonde head, even as it pained her a little to ignore the clucks and cooing that tried to entice her to visit a table and deign to bestow her attention on one of the lucky humans. They weren't her objective today, though the promise of treats was tempting.

"Mhow!" She called as she headed for the kitchenette at the front, the little space that held the register and the things for making food and drink. It was a start in her hunt, and a decent guess considering the man she was searching for owned the cat haven everyone was so enjoying.

He had the benefit, this summer, of not being asked by the department to pick up any of the summer courses as a Grad Assistant, rather his committee had asked him to focus on research responsibilities and his thesis. With the storefront so close to the campus, it was delightfully easy to get materials he needed from the library or archives and bring to the storefront to work with while minding the ebb and flow of traffic. The cats handled most of the hard work, as it was.

Even with as many adoptions as they’d managed since opening, he still had enough time with the Catfe fluffy staff to learn the individual voices and trills. One that didn’t register to his hindbrain as regular drew Quenton’s attention from the book stand he had propped next to the ipad ‘register’. Someone let one of the cats out? But no, that isn’t a normal— Ash!

How long had it been since he’d seen the burmilla? Each time was too long. I wonder if she’s claimed a specific senshi she stays with now. Or a team.

The blonde drew the pager-phone and sign from below the counter to set onto it, a cat shaped cookie from the day’s tray, and locked out the ipad and barista entry behind himself as he left the entry towards the catroom and the waiting silver body. Meeting her up he crouched, to allow her the decision of just a hello, a scooped carry in his arms, or a shoulder ride towards the plushness of the VIP lounge where she could freely chatter and eat the human-food cookie if she liked. Quenton didn’t smile, he never did anymore, but squeezed his eyes in warm greeting to her.

Ash tried to look patient, she really did. She wanted to looked poised and regal, standing behind the wall waiting for Quenton to answer her cat-language demands and come get her, but there was a twitching shiver down her tail that said she was not. She was small, and demanding, and impatient, but to her joy, the tall blonde never seemed to think badly of it.

He appeared in short order, thankfully, and without a word, bent to offer her himself. Such a good boy. Always so thoughtful.

She was neat about gathering her haunches under her and sitting up pretty, stretching out her paws until he scooped her up. She settled with all confidence in her right to be where she was, and all the trust that the human holding her would not let her fall. It gave her a wonderful vantage point to look over the busy Catfé from down her little nose, her tail draping luxuriously over the crook of Quenton's elbow, and she sniffed, just a little, at the true cats lazing about and begging for human attention. (As though she were not a hundred times guilty of the same thing.)

Sadly, there was no talking allowed while there were customers about, but a deep, rumbly purr was words and greeting enough for now, at least.

It took little to cross the space on long legs, and Ash was less than no burden while offering a pleasant thrumm. Quenton heeled the VIP door shut behind himself, leaning forward to gently tip the silver-grey puff onto the solid table in the center of the seating. For security's sake, he took a second moment to key the lock.

"If you want a drink I can go make one for you once a few minutes have passed. The cookie is Espresso-ganache Sablé, if you want it." He set it down near her, while finding a place himself on the near curve of loveseat. "But how have you been? Where have you been? You have been missed."

His tone lacked accusation of any sort, instead heavied with wistful welcome and earnest greetings like to Victorian ocean-liners found at dock after months away. "At least not wounded, from a glance. All one piece."

Being carried by a firm set of arms, held against a warm chest, was one of life's great pleasures. It was one of the perks of being cat formed here on Earth. No one made a fuss if you didn't feel like exerting yourself to walk.

When her comfortable cradle titled and her weight shifted, the Mauvian took the cue and slid smoothly to the table as though she had been ready for it. The silky length of her tail arched up above her back as she made a short circle of the table to inspect her surroundings before the offer of a delicious treat caught her full attention.

"Ah! Such a sweet boy you are, you think of everything!" Ash chirped as she fell on the cookie, settling herself down on her stomach so she could curve two silver paws around the food. She crooned softly as she ran her sandpaper tongue over the edge, scraping at the crumbly border.

"Ah, darling... I've missed you too. I'm sorry I haven't been around terribly much. I suppose I should be better about that..." Her enthusiasm dimmed as her green eyes widened behind her visor, her expression part regret and part hesitation. Her paws shifted, fiddling with the cookie like a child caught by a parent.

"I've been spending a lot of time at home with Nadia and Colin. Or in HQ, fixing it up. We found something there, have you heard?" The chance to share brightened her a little, the small triangles of her ears perking forward before swiveling back again.

"I am all in one piece. And quite healthy. I've been feeling... guilty about my inactivity, actually. I just... after going into the rift like that... fighting beside everyone... seeing everything..." She shifted guiltily, playing with her cookie more than she was eating it. "I always said I wasn't a fighter. It was very hard, for me. I just needed... a bit of a sabbatical, if you will. I hope you aren't upset with me... It was never my intention to abandon anything. I know I could have communicated that better, and I am sorry for it. I have missed you, too. I hope you've been ok?"

Nadia and Colin are home, then. Or alternatively so. Colin didn't say so much, but neither have I asked. I knew Tribble, well enough. Which Senshi or Knight is Nadia, I wonder? It was possible that the person was a civilian only, but there never seemed much play or likelihood of civilians being party to, supportive of, or deeply involved in the war as much as he'd used that very ruse himself with Knight Scholomance. Alois had become a convenient cloak as a corpse.

He had not expected admissions of guilt or accompanying implications of apology. How much is mincing, excuses, reasons in such things. Equivocating. We always all have reasons for the choices we make, if they hinder others. And seek pardon at least on the grounds of them. Understanding. It is all understandable, and owed no more to me than as a friend. "I am alive and in one piece as well, as you can see, Ash."

A hope of reassurance, with no need of showing new scars beneath the clothes that were as much armor as the stoicism he wore on face—pillar of calm, stone-hard sufficiency, succor, strength. Inhuman. "The mind and will need as much care, and healing, as a body. I am glad you took a breath, instead of incur damage. We all need you, Ash. A sabbatical is worth it, to have you back at full vigor. If there's ever anything I can do or offer, if you're feeling brittle again, let me know. "

" I have not heard of goings on at the Headquarters. Faust shares little of Mauvian goings on. " And it was better, conversationally, to hear news from a second source, and second point of view from Faust's on most occasions. All the more a source that could read. It was likely to please Ash, as well, to garner some sense of superiority over another Mauvian in helpfulness. Pleased Mauvians meant peaceable kingdoms. "What has happened? What was found?"

His forgiveness came easily and with it, her burden of guilt evaporated. It wasn't often Ash acknowledged her own selfishness, it was comforting to have her moment of vulnerability handled with care. The silver cat brightened immediately and the bite she took out of her cookie was much healthier this time, her enjoyment obvious in the treat, and in her friend.

"I'm glad you're okay. You're a good senshi, one of the best, so I don't worry nearly as much about you as some of my... less careful senshi. But its still a happy thing to know." She smiled, her almond eyes happily squinted. "I will let you know, next time I need support. I know you'd be there for me."

Ash was happy to move on to a more pleasant subject than her shortcomings and she straightened up, settling into a prime position for Gossip.

"Well, last time the cats gathered in HQ to pass out the communication devices, we found a youma in the walls, right? Of course, we managed to subdue the beast and dust it, but it left a sizeable hole and a lot of damage behind. Its been just sort of... cordoned off as unsafe and left there, but it seems that it was more than just a wall. There was space behind it!" Her eyes widened with glee and excitement, her tail twitching behind her. "A whole section of HQ, hidden and blocked off, can you imagine? The computer there must have been disturbed by the reopening because it sent out a distress beacon and drew us all in. We had to deal with a little robotic guard that didn't recognize any of us, but once that was deactivated, we found a whole suite of rooms! It seems they can be coded to a cat's energy signature, I've already marked out my own of course, and they're just... big empty rooms that would make perfect living or working quarters!"

"Its quite exciting to think there was more down there." She said as she sat back, pleased. "I always found it strange that the whole of our operations was just... one room we all had to share. I'm still curious why it was blocked off and I can only assume it was some sort of living quarters since that's naturally what the rooms seem to fit, but who really knows? I haven't gotten far in my explorations or access of the computers, I'm afraid... but I love a good puzzle like this. AND a little room of my own, now."

“A Puff of Mauvians…” The words trailed off, spoken softly anyway and not actually a part of active conversation. Even knowing that such things must happen from time to time, the mental imagery of so many gathered in one place was a temptation and sheer delight. As much as days when visiting one of the sister shelters to pick from the resident clowder of cats which would be new employees at the Catfe. So many delightful cats in need of snacks and adoration. And a Youma. Which is a dangerous thing to have to deal with in their very base. Imagine a youma on a senshi Homeworld, and the damage it could do…

“A robotic guard...an AI? Deactivated? Who programmed it and who made the HQ….” The fact that the place existed was already a mystery enough, but the history grew more ominous in context of all the rest of the mysterious war and it’s own origins, and Destiny City’s place in the whole of that. “I wonder if there was something here, on this part of Earth, at the time of the Silver Millennium. Something to give reason why such a headquarters would be here. Why so many senshi awaken here. Why the Negaverse has so many operatives here. What was Destiny City, or the land of it, before, where history books are dark and inaccurate. “

“Why it was blocked off is an excellent, and worrisome question as well. Why would such a thing be blocked off….and who did it?....”

"I know, right?" Ash squealed as Quenton worked his way through his thought process, bringing up questions she herself had wondered and worried at like a catnip toy. Her slim paw pounded the counter in excited emphasis, her green eyes wide and bright behind her visor. Ears perked forward, she seemed as though she nearly vibrated with the enticement of new things, new mysteries.

"There are so many questions, so many possibilities!" She said, finally abandoning her treat to pace the table top. Her tail flicked behind her, emphasizing her words. "Was the place once a more robust and thriving head quarters for a larger group of Mauvians? Did their disappearance prompt the closing off, as unessential areas were depowered? Was there a lack of power supply, or a need to use less to remain hidden? Where did they all go, those who built it and then abandoned it, till the first of us returned?"

She turned, her head tilted at her friend. "I haven't heard who found the headquarters first, actually. Or who built it, if my supposition is incorrect and it was never fully abandoned. Beyond ********* and Zirconia, my contact with cats who awakened before I did has been very limited. Non existent, really. I wish I had more of those contacts, because there is so much of the Before that I don't know enough about. You haven't met any older cats, have you?"

Ivynian
PostPosted: Tue Sep 19, 2017 7:34 pm

“ ********* and Zirconia were my early sources for lore of any sort, for most of my early career as a senshi. Other Mauvians...Faust’s strength has never been pure Academia, like History. There was a fawn colored female (Cora) at the White Phoenix Offensive that upgraded me to an Eternal Senshi, but I never learned her name. Nor more about her as to where she patrolled, who she worked with. There were some corrupted ones that I’ve seen, with varying exposure to speaking...a red, dirty, somewhat smelly red cat that tried to give me plant bulb as a ‘Moon Pearl’. A white a black one at Wolframite’s meeting. There was another… I think she may have been of an older awakening. “ Quenton shifted, sorting through the possibilities until there was one that fit the possibility of being useful at all.

“She was small, a kitten in size, maybe. She introduced herself as ‘Diana, guardian of small lady.’ She said that Small Lady was gone, and not likely to ever come back, and it pained her. But she was staying now with a Sailor Pistol, and also spoke of a Mauvian Poseidon, who was cranky. She’d not known about the HQ, come to think of it. I checked back a few nights where I’d met her for a few weeks, but naught came of it after. I’d mentioned you and the HQ, and had hoped to meet with her and compare notes with Pistol and maybe even the mentioned Poseidon. “

He drummed fingers once along a knee as it crossed over the other when he leaned back in the plush seating. “I’d hoped as well that if meeting her again myself fell through, because of whatever reason, that they’d seek out the HQ and maybe come across you, as one of the other informed Mauvians about tech. I don’t think it was likely they had access to any of the Phone upgrades. Or knowledge of them. Have you heard of Diana or Poseidon? “

"Oh!" Ash chirped as she paused, the thought of a 'fawn colored female' sending her mind back through the list of cats she had met as something tickled.

There had been times where she had attending gathering of cats, now that she was paying enough attention to recall. There had been so many of them there, all moving about and being distracting... she'd only caught a few names.

"Did she have a sort of short cape on her? White with gold trim?" She remembered a girl cat like that, back when they had found the meteor in the park. What was her name again? She remembered showing up... greeting *********... lots of other cats and a man who'd been turned into a monster... and then of course, ********* taking sailor form. There had also been the time the cats had gathered in HQ for Snowball's new communication devices, and then more recently, with the hidden rooms.

"Most the cats I know are younger than I am, I think. Or roughly the same. I've never met Diana, or Poseidon, I'm sad to say. Maybe they decided they needed a break and stopped patroling. Maybe Diana went to join her Small Lady." The silver cat turned from the table center to pad towards the edge, a look of concentration and stillness in her face as she gathered herself and judged the distance. She lept lightly from the table, aiming for that upraised knee of his and the lap beyond, fully confident and trusting she wouldn't find it suddenly absent from beneath her when she landed.

"Maybe I should put a call out for information on our history, see who volunteers it. You should tell any senshi you find, who've been at this a while. Maybe they know some older cats I can talk to, and how to get ahold of them. They probably won't have the new communicators, since they didn't come to the meeting where Snowball passed them out. Has Faust learned how to work his yet?" There was an edge to her voice as she asked, as though she smirked, just a little, at the knowledge that he struggled. Any opportunity to show how much better she was than that... brute. Even if she was smaller. And not as good at physical combat.

Whatever.

“A white capelet with elaborate gold trim and bow, darker than fawn ears and tail.” He confirmed to her asking. A gold star. I remember her star most of all, and earnest, roseate eyes. She was small, as a person. Changed between felid and hominid seamlessly. Perhaps not so different from another small, emerald-eyed Mauvian I know.”

Quenton was in no hurry to move his lap or spill her about, and kept her landing pad secure. There was a more grim reality that was possible in ‘joining her Small Lady’, and he hoped it was not the truth. Hopefully they were both just out there, busy with something, somewhere in the stars but still alive and still fighting. Like the Fawn Mauvian. Like whoever Poseidon was. “I think it a worthwhile call to put out. As a culture, people in Destiny City are good at quick answers and wanting to be heroes, and bad at sustained action and call for empathy. Being able to do a quick infodump is something more attainable …..unfortunately. Rather than prolonged archeological digs and research. “

“And new technology is always a help. It’s been long enough since it was developed that maybe some who had given up have retaken up their powers. And likely new entirely have been found by various mauvians.” He couldn’t say one way or another if Faust had figured out any of the tech available to any stage of senshi or mauvian. “I haven’t asked after it of him, meā culpā.”

“Have you...Ash, found any new senshi?”

Ash's head lifted and she almost preened as she kneaded his lap with her paws. Up, down, up, down...

"I have gotten pretty good at switching between my forms. I just wish I had more freedom to do so, without the risk of bringing the Negaverse down on my head. At least there are some places where it's safe. Planets and Wonders, HQ, and now the rooms we discovered. That will be one of the biggest benefits I think." She said as she finally tucked her backside under and sat. Her paws still kneaded him, shifting her weight from side to side as velvet paws rose and fell in pushes against his thighs.

"I think her name was Cora? If she's the same female I remember meeting back at the park that night the meteor fell. She knew ********* and we talked briefly." She shrugged, both in response to her statement and his own about not asking Faust. It didn't really matter, ultimately, and no fault of his for not knowing. It was a... catty feeling, wanting to know.

"I haven't sensed any new senshi, myself, but I'm sure there have been new ones. Most of my time has been spent with the Oroboros group, with Aegir and Methone, the times I actually go out. I've taken quite a few under my wing so far... I'm sure the other Mauvians would like a chance." She chuckled, her tail giving a satisfied little flick. She angled a look back at her tall friend, her expression sly.

"What about you? Have you found anyone to patrol with these days? Or made friends with any new Mauvians that I should be worried are going to take you away from me?" Ash teased.

Cora. A pleasant enough name. And missing, still, at least from my knowing. How many lives do we all touch a single time. I dwell so long on it. But knew ********* is something. And where has she been? Possibly kept apart of the necessity in keeping Iris. Hostage by friendship...if it is so much. ********* at least showed caring.

Aegir and Methone he knew, if wholly separately. Methone had been with Scholomance-Isaiah, and seemed pleasant. And spending a deal of time with them. Aegir has said nothing of a great closeness to a Mauvian, in a pairing sort of way. Maybe to Methone? Or another of the Ourobouros? Teams are as much the same sort of association as any senshi with a mauvian. I should not be jealous. I do not make her happy in a keeping sort of way.
As much as any person can keep another.
Only until our hands let go.
I wonder if it is only a game that she plays at double-standard jealousy, saying she spends all her time with a team, and asking if I have others.

“No, I have not met new or old. I scarce meet knights or senshi when I am out. Officers, if not a youma. I am not well suited, anymore, to others. A few months back I went to the Surrounding, to the Wonder of Celsus for revelry he hosted...it was unwell. I left before it had much begun. “ Quenton carefully laid left palm against the soft arch of her back, heavy and slow in stroke back.
"Are the Ourobouros your team, now?"

“Will you a** the information of the rooms and headquarters itself to the Primer for young senshi and mauvians to find?”

The weight upon slinky back had an instinctive response in the form of ascending elevation and Ash's hips rose as the long-fingered hand slid down her spine, her tail lifted in enjoyment of the touch.

"Unwell? What a shame! Was this Celsus fellow a bit of a bore?" It was one of the only explanations she could come up with. Surely it wasn't Quenton's fault. He was positively delightful, caring and sensitive, as far as she was concerned. "I find it hard to believe you aren't suited to others when we clearly get along smashingly. I've heard nothing but good things about you, truthfully. Aegir certainly adores you."

Maybe... she should be doing more for this senshi than she had been. He was still one of hers, even if he had a cat of his own. Being alone so much wasn't good for anyone and she found it hard to understand why he was when he was so clearly wonderful. The people he met just must be... thickheaded, and as emotionally sensitive as rocks. Maybe she could do better. In fact, she was sure she could, if she focus and applied herself. Thraen needed the support of others, even if it didn't evolve into a team such as the Oroborous had.

Speaking of...

"I... suppose you could say that. I have been spending a lot of time with them... and I feel a closeness to them. That doesn't mean, of course, that I've given up on any of my wonderful, lovely senshi, or that I'm not there to support them. But its nice to settle down a little bit and focus, rather than running about gathering up all the lost lambs." She said as she finally settled, cat-loaf style, across his lap. "I do need to make an update to the primer... its been far too long, and there is a lot of new information to go into it. If you have anything you can think of that's missing, please send it to me and I'll sort it in with everything."

"If you did find someone, or someones, to team up with... what would you look for in partners?" She asked, trying to be circumspect and nonchalant about it.
