It was still spring, maybe, but it was humid enough that Ever had stripped out of his white coat, down to a worn-thin t-shirt and shredded jeans -- unpleasant enough that he was considering kicking off his boots and doing this barefoot. Apparently, time spent abroad had left him unprepared for the heavy hand of a Bermuda spring and the sticky sensation of a potential oncoming storm. It left hair stuck to the side of his face, against his cheekbone, as he made a face at Scarlett. His left hand was still wrapped from fingers to near elbow in teal plaster, scuffed and scarred. The right one, however, worked just fine: wrapped around the hilt of his weapon with the sheath tucked into the back of his belt, chain rattling at the small of his back. "I'm just gonna defend. You come at me, and try to land a hit." But then he paused, considering. "Put a bet behind it. If you hit, I'll tell you something true about me. If you miss, then you've got to spill. How's that sound?"

Scarlett always forgot how miserable it was on this island in the Springtime. Her roots were based in evergreens and mountain breezes, not the suffocating heaviness of this tropic humidity. With no other choice, she had forced her hair up into a messy pony (that she was confident was about to burst its scrunchie) and faced Ever in as little clothing as she could manage while still maintaining some sense of modesty. She was sure she didn't have to tell him, of all people, how miserable it was to be fair under a blazing sun - she wasn't sure if her shorts were a blessing or a curse now with her legs bared to the heat. "Of course there are strings attached," if she weren't so uneasy with the bladed hands splayed in her palms, it might have seemed a friendly joke. She did manage a partial smile. Instead of agreeing to his bet, she took the moment to dig the heel of her chucks into the ground beneath her and let her eyes look down at the weapon, still silent. She wasn't even sure she had secrets to give. "Alright, why the ******** not," the words came on a sigh as the woman swung her gaze back up to meet Ever's. Even with that busted arm, she was pretty sure he had the advantage.

"What, do you have something better to do?" Ever raised his eyebrows in faint amusement as he settled into a ready position -- one foot just a bit forward, his bad arm raised into a protective position, and the dagger up. His eyes were bright, a smile flashing across his face as he looked her over. "You were the one complaining about how they don't give you anything to do." He gestured her in with the the very tips of his fingers, poking out of the cast. "You've got to prove you're putting the effort in." HP: 60/60 Defense: 2

"Shut up, Ever." The automatic response to his too-accurate check on her attitude was delivered with a half smile and not nearly enough bite to be offensive. Truth was, Ever wasn't an awful person to be sparing against and he was right, even if she would be damned before she gave him the satisfaction of hearing that out loud. She had to show some ******** spine at some point - she should have just considered it lucky that he was willing to beat it out of her. She tested the fans in her hands a couple of times, splaying them wide with a flick of her wrist and then closing them again, before she set her feet apart and leveled her eyes on him. Even with a busted arm, she felt like he had the upper hand. Oh well, ******** it, right? Her heels dug down in the earth for purchase and gave her the footing she needed to launch forward. One hand arced a feathered blade up as she closed in, fan splayed, so that it blocked some of his vision of her while her other swept at a more dangerous arc towards his body. Ever's instinct was to raise his sheath in protection -- except, of course, that he wasn't holding his sheath. It meant that instead he brought up the cast, realized what he was doing, and quickly twisted to bring the blade up instead. His expression was exasperated, with himself instead of her, and he only slightly defected the blow. "God, this sucks." He wiggled his bad fingers, ducking back out of her grip. And then he paused, weapon still raised, remembering their deal, and considered what he could share with her. "I speak a whole bunch of languages. Like four well. And the rest well enough." Just a beat, assessing, and then he gestured her in, looking more prepared this time. "My dad spoke French at home a lot." HP: 56/60 Defense: 8

Scarlett felt a very brief moment of success, even if her victory was mostly due to Ever being temporarily crippled in one arm. She stepped back and out of his range to reset as he grumbled and grudgingly gave up her first piece of victory knowledge. "Really?" Her hands brought her fans back to center as she tried to connect the idea of a mutli-lingual tongue to the man in front of her. It seemed improbable but so did a lot of s**t these days - it was at least something worth remembering later. Without wasting time, she drew back and charged him again, only this time he blocked her and she had no choice but to rebound - if it were a real fight she would have been at a disadvantage. As she took a few steps back and away from him, she considered their game of truths. "I used to compete in horse shows as a kid," her shoulders rolled with a shrug, "I was pretty good, too." "We had goats." It wasn't actually his turn -- but Ever didn't think about that until after the words were out of his mouth, as he settled back into a read position after handily blocking her attack. He grinned, halfway apology, with a little bit of a shrug. More to that, that would tie into what she'd offered, but he bit back to save it for teh next time she colllided. Now, maybe. He looked just a bit unsteady, maybe a smidge distracted, as he gestured her in. HP: 56/60 Defense: 3

The recognition of his own folly made her answer his grin with an amused half smile. For once, she seemed to be letting her anxiety over the battle wane in favor of good company; smart a** that he was, she was coming to find she didn't really mind spending time with Ever. She dove into him again, swinging her fans out and open in a long dual arc that seemed just a little off to her as she closed the distance - they swept clean through the air and barely grazed him at all. The half smile on her face was immediately replaced with something more annoyed as she jumped back and out of range again. "Damn it," she sighed and began to walk a slow, fidgety half-circle around him. The way her hands flicked the fans open and closed rhythmically suggested she was reconsidering her mistake already - her intent focus was a clear sign of obsession but she did, absently, remember the deal. "I was up for promotion to district manager of a local grocery chain before this, actually." HP: 40 Damage: -4

Paperwork had not lasted nearly as long as Zeke had initially thought when he'd sent Scarlett off to find Ever for a bit of practice on the training field. It meant he was able to join them before they'd gotten too far into it, taking a seat on a picnic table that was out of the way, but close enough for him to listen as they spoke.
The content of which had him lofting brows in surprise. Scarlett did not seem the sort to give up details about herself out of the blue.
Arms resting on his thighs, he laced his fingers between his knees. Settling in to watch the spar.

"It sounds like a thrilling life, I can't imagine giving that up for this, instead." His grin, though, as he blocked her easily, gave away the sarcasm behind the words. Ever shook his head just a little, rolling the shoulder of his bad arm to settle it. The weight of the cast pulled, just a bit. He should have put it in a sling. "Why are you here?"
