He can direct great focus toward whatever happens to interest him at the time, but often ignores anything and everything else. Without something to strive for, however, Shawn tends to be nonchalant. He will often show little to no interest in anyone or anything and gets bored quite easily.
►History: Born in the quiet Snowpoint City, Shawn would tell you he's just an average guy with an average life. He's not the offspring of some Ace Trainers, Pokémon Researchers, Rangers, Breeders, or what have you. His father was a civil engineer who dreamed of becoming a Pokémon Master during his childhood. Needless to say, his dreams were crushed when he was right around Shawn’s age. His mother ran a small business from home and was quite content to do nothing more. Initially, Shawn felt the same way. As he saw most of his childhood friends leave the city to begin their own adventures, Shawn remained home, seemingly unmoved. He didn’t seem to care about starting a journey of his own, at least not until his sister did.
Alice Chefley was born 17 minutes before Shawn and does not hesitate to rub that in his face. The two have enjoyed a healthy, if one-sided sibling rivalry for most of their lives. Anything Shawn could do, Alice would do bigger and better. When she finally left home, Shawn felt a sort of void. He tried to play it off at first, much like the way he did when one friend after another left. But as days became weeks, became months, became one year since Alice left, Shawn could no longer suppress his true desire. It was time for him to start his own journey, to step out of his sister’s shadow. Feeling especially emboldened, Shawn vowed that he would become so accomplished, his sister would be remiss not to give him credit. Shawn dreamed of becoming a top tier trainer, one who would be known for his brilliant and unconventional battle strategies. But to truly best Alice, at this point an aspiring archaeologist, he secretly made it a goal to discover something in the world she did not yet know about. Shawn would have to decide on a region and leave soon in order to accomplish such a feat, however. Alice already had a year of exploration and two regions under her belt. It was now or never.

After arguing with himself for several minutes, Shawn finally initiated the call. His anxiety only grew worse with each second the call went unanswered. Of course, he didn't know whether or not the person he was trying to reach was even able to answer, and the anxious teen didn't want to waste his time. Just as he was about to end the call, however, he received an answer. The video signal coming through revealed a young woman who couldn't have been much older than Shawn. She had striking green eyes, shoulder-length wavy black hair, and her skin tone was slightly lighter than that of Shawn's. The young woman sat at a desk in what Shawn could only assume was her office at her job, as there were papers strewn about and a few archaeological items serving as decoration. She seemed rather busy, as though she was attempting to balance multiple tasks at the same time, all the while almost forgetting she just answered a call from someone.
"I’m so sorry, this is just really rude of me," the young woman finally said while shuffling around a stack of papers. She didn’t really bother to check who was calling and continued with, "You think perhaps you can call me back later? I’m terribly busy right— now…" At last she looked up at the screen and saw a face that elicited anger, happiness, confusion, and more all at once. The young woman sat silently, covering her mouth as if to avoid a sudden outburst of emotion that she may regret later. Shawn was equally silent, but more because he didn't know what to say. He offered a nervous smile to the young woman, hoping she'd break the ice. "I-I don't even know where to start with you, Sebby," said the young woman in a frustrated tone.
"'Hello' usually works," Shawn quipped. He never missed an opportunity to be a smartass. The young woman on the other side was less than amused, but Shawn knew what he was doing. There was no way she could stay upset for long.
"Oooh I hate you so much!" the young woman said, still somewhat upset. She was starting to cool, however. "Do you have any idea how long it is since I've last seen your stupid face or heard your irritating voice? Don't answer that! It's been six months! Six months and not once have you bothered to make sure dear ol' sis is okay! Six months and you've more or less been ignoring me! I dunno what you've been up to or whe-- Wait a minute... What is that?" the young woman questioned, seeing something in the background.
"What, it's just Weiss. Hey, Weiss! Wanna say hi to Alice?" Shawn called out after his Snover. The sassy snow-covered tree paid him no mind. She seemed to be a lot more perceptive than her trainer and recognized that the young woman wasn't referring to her.
"Not Weiss, you idiot! I know who she is! You-- you're in a Pokémon Center? And that thing. I haven't seen one in person, but that was an Oshawott, wasn't it? Care to tell your twin sister who is supposed to know everything about you what's been happening in the six months you've been ignoring me!?" Shawn's sister was clearly quite annoyed. It was one thing for him to just ignore her for the last six months, but to not even update her on something as monumental as leaving for a new reason, as she hastily concluded, was something else entirely.
"Well, yeah," Shawn responded. "Why do you think I'm calling you now? I-I mean... Other than to admit I've been kind of a jerk. A little. Maybe. Uh, anyway. Surprise! I'm in Unova! I just got here, actually. And um... Yeah. I wanted to let you know, because uh..." The young man was struggling to admit his wrongdoing. It wasn't so much that he believed he didn't do anything wrong. It was more the case that he was too stubborn to admit it. Alice knew all of this, of course, and she also knew how to force an apology out of her younger brother. At this point he was simply delaying the inevitable.
"BECAUSE YOU'VE BEEN A BIG JERK AND YOU'RE SORRY? I think that works!" Alice chided, trying to guilt Shawn into an apology. She wasn't even particularly angry anymore, as much as she was annoyed with her younger brother's typical behavior. Her response itself was rather typical of her. Had she actually been angry, she more than likely would have hung up on Shawn, even despite how long it's been since the two have talked. "Look, Sebby," the older sister stated calmly. "I know you've been upset or jealous or whatever with me. I'm not dumb, you know. I could tell with each time we've talked right up until I told you I was headed to Johto and you stopped calling entirely. I also know you've felt that way for quite some time now, maybe for years. And before you start wondering how I know this, mom calls me all the time and we talk. I know we've had our differences and disagreements growing up, but I'm ready -- I've been ready now for a while -- to put that aside. As much as you annoy the ever-loving s**t out of me, you are still my stupid twin brother. And I want what's best for you."
"Hey, no!" contested Shawn. "That's not! I was supposed to say all that! I -- oh whatever. As per freakin' usual you beat me to the punch, sis. You've summed up pretty much everything I wanted to talk to you about. So uh.. yeah. I'm sorry for how I've been. And I wanted to call you to try and start things over, so I'm glad you're on the same page. But! You mark my words, not-that-much-older-than-me sister! I'm gonna become an amazing trainer. I'm not gonna be in your shadow anymore! And! I know you're an aspiring archaeologist and I'm not one at all, but what say you we have a friendly wager?" Shawn was feeling particularly emboldened. While his primary motive for calling his sister was to make amends, all the years they've spent growing up in which she's always one-upped him have come to a head. The younger twin was on a mission now, and he would not be easily swayed from it. "I am in no way doubting or discrediting your vast knowledge of all that archaeological stuff, but I betcha there's something out here that even you haven't heard of! Maybe not in Unova, definitely not in Sinnoh, but somewhere! And whatever it is, I'm gonna find it first!"
"Oh please! Do you know who you're speaking to, little brother? The Desert Resort and Relic Castle over there have been thoroughly explored! As have the Solaceon Ruins back home! You don't stand a chance, you dork! But I'll take your bet anyway. Winner gets bragging rights for life, I assume? You know, like our usual bets? That I have yet to lose? In the spirit of friendly competition, I wish you the best of luck, twin." The older twin was in a much better mood than when she first answered. She was genuinely happy, proud even, for her brother. It seemed to her that he was growing up. They both were, really. Their childhood was full of angst and hard feelings, at least for him, so she was glad that he seemed to be able to put that all aside and want to build something better between the two.
"Oh, we shall see, sis! Anyway... It's getting a bit late for me. I've been traveling almost nonstop to get here and I'm exhausted. I'll talk to ya later, sis! And I promise, it won't be in six months from now. You have my word!"
"I'm holding you to that, you jerk! You don't want to find out what'll happen if you do that to me again! Hey! When you wake up in the morning, check your PC! I'm going to leave you a little something to help start your journey! Love you, Sebby!" And with that the call was over. Alice would continue with whatever work was going on before heading home herself.
"Ugh, I hate it when she calls me that," Shawn thought to himself. He got up from his chair and stretched out a bit before shuffling lazily toward his room for the night, his Pokémon in tow. Tomorrow he would head out for the next city. From what he remembered, the first gym in the region should be there. But he knew he needed to train more before he could take it on. That was for tomorrow, though. Now, it was time to sleep.
