User ImageHello! Good morning!
My name is Nurse Harmony and I am one of the registered nurses from Destiny's Star that have volunteered to help the local Destiny City Blood Bank in their blood drive. Did you know that every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood? The annual average amount of units we use every year in the U.S. is thirty-six thousand - that's a lot!

Luckily, thanks to generous donors like yourself, we are able to keep up with the demand. Because of you, your neighbors and loved ones will receive much needed transfusions - you're the real hero, here!

Please form a line right here at the sign-in table - no shoving, please! Once you're signed in and your blood type is determined, a nurse will come fetch you and take you to one of our extra-comfy chairs, where you'll have an IV started and in no time at all, you'll be helping saving a life.

When you're finished, please take your time and enjoy some complimentary refreshments over at our table by the exit - we have plenty of soft drinks, juices and cookies to go around!

~

((OOC: Your character is here to donate blood. You are welcome to either write a solo or come in with a friend as you navigate through the Blood Bank's stations in the seminar room. Feel free to make your post(s) as short or as long as you'd like, but remember that every 500 words you write will qualify you for a ticket in the Immunization Raffle!

If you would like to interact with Nurse Harmony or any of the other staff, please quote Ghouliboo, as she will be the staff member(s) on hand assisting. This is not necessary, however, if you'd like to do something on your own or with friends!

We humbly have only one request: in at least one of your posts, please roll a single 6-sided dice. If you roll a 1, 3 or 5, you will mysteriously feel a bit extra exhausted after giving blood....maybe giving blood was more tiring than you thought it would be?))

Giulia Montgomery

Giulia was blood type O-. That was one of the first things that she had learned when they moved back to Destiny City. With the amount of accidents that they had in the city, just in case anything went wrong, she and Aidan had both been required to get little medical bracelets that they had to carry around with them as they went to school, or over to a friend's house, or anywhere else. In case they were out with nanny, or out with a friend, they needed to know what allergies they had, and their blood types, and any other unusual facts that a medical professional might find relevant.

Blood type O- she had learned, was an important blood type. Anyone in the world could use her blood, when she was old enough to donate it. That was because her blood had some Anti-Jenns in it, and there was some other little thingy in it too. She wasn't exactly a hundred percent sure what the other thingy in the blood was, but she didn't have them, which made her super special in that she couldn't have them (meaning she couldn't be given any blood that did have them or she would get sick) but the fact she had O Anti-Jenns meant.... she couldn't have A Jenn or a B Jenn or an AB Jenn either? Or maybe the O had been 0 Anti-Jenns, or....

Either way, she knew she had to stay away from some sort of Jenns. Otherwise she would get really sick and it would be really gross and.... something bad would happen. She had to only have blood with O Anti-Jenns and no special thingies in it. And that was all there was to say about that.

Unfortunately, in this moment, while Giulia wanted very much to donate her blood since it could be used by anyone, she was very little. Apparently when you donated blood they took an awful lot from you, and Giulia being both only 6 still and kind of on the skinny side, she didn't have enough blood in her body to do any donating. And she probably couldn't help anyone on the inside either. She couldn't hold a needle, and she didn't know what anything was called. She would probably just get in the way. But there had to be something that she would be able to do to help out? Anything! Maybe she could pass out some pam... f... lets? Some of the little books. On why it was good to donate blood?

And there were cookies! That would surely get people to come let them stick a needle in? She would let someone stick a needle in her for a cookie. It was just like getting a shot, except that they were taking the blood away? As she sat there, quietly watching Jada (who was also an O-) donate some of her blood, Giulia very carefully considered how she might be able to make a big impact on the need for blood since she couldn't donate herself.

She wanted to save lives, and be the very best princess she could be!

Though, blood donation was kind of gross to watch, but it was a really good thing to do it if you could. Still, she couldn't watch it all. One day she'd do it, though. Maybe... when she was older. A lot older. Like soooo old, like... 17 or something. Sitting here and watching the blood giving was important for like... educating herself and stuff for when she was old enough to do grown-up stuff like this. She twisted her hands in her skirt, watching the needle pull and- and nope. Giulia went pale, and closed her eyes. It wasn't something she really was feeling like she wanted to watch, actually. Was it okay to donate blood with your eyes closed? Probably.

She knew that giving blood was really super important. She'd gotten a whole lesson on it in class. One of the kids in her school had gotten hurt, and when he got hurt, he got really bad scraped up. And because they were little, they didn't have much blood to give away. (It was why they couldn't donate blood.) So when he had gotten scraped, it had been somebody in one of the buses just like this one who had put their blood in one of the little plastic baggies. And then, the little plastic bag got tested a lot, which was why they needed to take so much. Because wven though there were rules, sometimes big people wanted to help a lot and so they told lies in order to help, but if they were sick and didn't know it, then their lie could have gotten him hurt. But anyway, they had taken a little bit of blood and used the little pouch to help try and replace the stuff he had lost in his accident, since he was little and needed to have the blood replaced.

His story got a little weird from there, and so Giulia opened her eyes to consider the blood ex tract shun that was happening in front of her. He said they put a needle in him and then there had been a thingy that squished the blood donation from the package and into him to replace the stuff that he was missing, but he hadn't gotten into very much detail because a lot of the kids got really grossed out and the teacher turned really pale and made him stop telling his tale. She couldn't blame the teacher, seeing how it went the other way.

At last, though, it looked like everything was coming to an end, and Giulia swallowed, and gathered her doll close to her chest. As they went to take the needle out, she turned her dolly's head away and buried her own face in the dolly's hair. That was really gross. Taking the cookie that they offered her for staying with Jada, she split it with her dolly as they left the bus.

Jada Chamberlyn

Jada had some hesitation about going to donate blood. She had a lot of medical history, after all, so she had read over all of the questions with interest. The preliminaries didn't look like she had anything to worry about in terms of having to reveal too much of said medical history, and as far as she knew, she'd never had any of the drugs that they asked about, requesting politely that the nurse who would be drawing her blood guide her through what they did before confirming if she had taken them or not. And as for any of the stuff that may have happened in Europe, she had been extensively screened before, and she had been permitted to donate previously, so... She blamed it on her blood type. O negative blood was a universal donor, which was something she had explained to both the kids. When they got older, they would be able to give their blood to anyone, but they would have to be very careful who they got it from in return.

The nurses were very smily and kind, and Jada was glad that she was going to be among the very first of their donators. As the day wore on, they would get tired and busier, and chances of them being as patient with the fact she had dragged along a six year old and a dolly, and a massive wave of anxiety. Every little squeak Giulia made had her mother-figure popping open an eye and starting to tense, in preparation to chastise the child for getting in someone’s way- but she seemed to be making herself right at home with a pamphlet, that she was reading aloud to her dolly. Jada sighed, relaxing back in her seat and trying to force herself to relax while she waited. She was never much fond of needles, but being a frequent blood donor sure would look good when and if people started peering at her charitable acts and causes, and she spent so much time at the hospital when she was a teen that giving back some of what she'd used... well.

Sometimes she wondered what had happened to those kind doctors and nurses. Almost none of them were still here. Closing her eyes as she nurse approached, she gave a soft hiss and wrinkled up her nose. Her fingers waggled, and a small hand fit into hers, and Jada relaxed. The rest of it was all going fairly easily, pain free and comfortable. It was cold, she was well-hydrated, and there would be a snack and a non-alcoholic sugary drink waiting for her at the end of it. Apple juice? Orange juice? Not a soda- she valued not having an ulcer and cavities.

“Excuse me,” she called to a nurse as Giulia played with her doll next to her, “Do you know about how long this takes? I haven't donated blood in a while, so I have forgotten a bit.” she swallowed, breathing in and out through her nose at the little flutter in her gut. Nerves.

Cassie Finlay

Usually, she avoided blood drives. She knew her blood type, AB Positive, after the quick test to determine her type. And from some of the pamphlets she got after signing up on the appropriate sheet, she quickly noted a few fact she'd no idea about. Namely, that AB plasma was used for treating everyone, regardless of their blood type, for injuries like clotting disorders, burn, and shock victims. Cassie winced. Considering a lot of the injuries people around here sustained? She could only imagine how often such treatments would be necessary.

It made her queasy to think about. She wasn't fond of needles, and the idea of willingly letting someone draw blood made her stomach roll, but...

But with everything going on around there?

She'd be donating blood, sure--and from the chart, only other AB Positive people could receive her blood type, a bummer, since apparently only around like... what? Three-point-four percent of the population had her type? So not super useful. But after speaking to the nurse at the sign-in desk, she confirmed that she'd be willing to also donate plasma. The part that'd actually be way more useful, and able to help a lot more people. Universal plasma.

She sat wringing out her skirt in the makeshift waiting room area, re-reading the pamphlets about blood donations, and then reading over the pamphlets time and time again about plasma donations. The description made her blanch, though it must not have been a really alarming amount for by the time the nurse came to retrieve her and lead her to the area they'd be working in, the woman was all smiles and gratitude that she was willing to do this.

However, it would only be a plasma draw, not blood and plasma.

"Oh no, that would be much too much on your body," the woman explained as she lead Cassie back. "If you want to go to another blood drive after a month of recuperating, you certainly can, but for now, we're just going to focus on the plasma."

Which didn't bother Cassie too much. Minus, of course, her general unease over needles and pain and…. Ick.

Once at the designated area, Cassie took a seat in one of the comfy chairs, leaning back and trying not to look at the needles as the nurse got everything prepped. A table next to her held all the tools and the instruments involved, but she tried to not even glance their way. Instead, she noticed how a TV had been rolled into the area. An animal show was on, showing cute baby animals playing and running amuck. The nurse caught her bemused expression and smiled. "You'll be here a little bit longer than for the blood donation period, but this will help that time fly by quickly."

Cassie at least had to agree about that. Cute animals were a good distraction, though if they had like, a therapy cat or dog that'd be even more effective… of course, it was even harder to focus on just the cute animals when she could feel the tourniquet being applied around her arm, and the nurse began to tap at her right hand, looking for the veins between the knuckles. This was always the worst part. Well ok. One of them.

She fidgeted where she sat, answering the simple questions as the nurse asked them. "So what school are you going to?"

"DCU."

"Oh yeah? What are you studying?"

"Anthropology."

"Really? That's very neat!"

And so on.

"Ouch!" She winced and would have jerked her hand away, if not for the woman holding onto her wrist. Cassie had to fight to keep herself from looking at the source of the offence, aware of the thick needle piercing her skin.

She couldn't move her fingers, couldn't fidget her right hand like she wanted to.

"Sorry, but it's all set now. Just sit back, relax, and let me know if you want anything to eat or drink."

She eyed the nurse warily. "Um…. Some juice? Or water? Please?" Hey, she offered… The nurse just smiled and walked off, pace brisk and Cassie sighed, trying to focus on the scene of the kittens rolling around playfully in the grass on the TV, rather than the needle and IV sticking out of her.

The more painful option. But what was this pain against those who dealt with the burns, the trauma, survived the casualties of their war? How many people were hurt daily by misfired magic, or youma, or Negaverse agents? And here she was complaining about needles? She stiffened her spine, scolding herself for focusing on her own situation rather than the good her small moment of pain could lead to. Yes, she was in pain, and yes, this was uncomfortable. But it would help someone. It was really the lease any of the senshi and knights should do… and Dark Mirror Senshi, and Negaverse agents…. Everyone really. They all owed it to the people of this city to spend their time and give back. Her mental rants got her through a few minutes at least. The nurse returned with a bottle of orange juice which she opened up for her and offered to Cassie's left hand, checking the IV and whatever other bits were over there before heading off to help out other donators.

She sipped the juice slowly, trying to still focus on its too sweet flavor and the TV. Now puppies and baby goats playing. Weren't they called kids or something? She snickered as a baby goat jumped and scampered along, bleating and trying to bump the puppies in the head. How long had even passed? She fidgeted, trying to pull out her cell phone without jostling her other hand with the freaking needle and stuff sticking out of it. Peeking at the screen, she sighed. Only ten minutes. Really? With a grumble, she settled back, sending out a few texts and even snapping a few shots of the area—without getting other donators in the photo, or her own setup—to confirm she was totally doing her part to support the new hospital.

By the time the entire forty-five minutes had passed, Cassie was a fidgeting mess. The nurse quickly pulled out the needle and she yelped again, before getting bandaged up and helped to the table of snacks. A Band-Aid was taped through her first knuckle on her right hand, a second and third one on her palm and the back of her hand to hold it in place. She nibbled a few cookies and drank a few more of the small bottles of orange juice before she began to feel steady enough to walk on her own out of the area. She felt… horrible really. Maybe she'd just given too much? Or too soon? Shaking her head—and regretting the movement with a small groan—she sought a… hopefully ok place to sit and chill for a while. Yikes this wasn't the best move on her part…

Ignacio had to admit that he wasn't exactly the biggest fan of giving blood. He knew it was important, sure, but he always felt a little sleepy afterwards. Plus, it involved staying still while a nurse jabbed his arm with a needle and then continuing to stay still while the blood slowly leaked from his arm into a tube into a big bag full of his own blood. The whole situation was just a little on the weird side, as important and vital as it was. And it required staying still.

That was honestly the part Ignacio hated most. He hated staying still. The idea that he just had to sit there for more than just a couple minutes while the blood was drawn made him antsy on its own, and there was likely a reason why he had a fidget toy in his hand, already messing with it while he waited for his turn to sign in so he could be hooked up to a tube that was hooked up to a bag.

He had learned early on that his blood type was fairly valuable. It wasn't O-, which was the most valuable blood type around, but O+ was still useful to anyone who had a positive blood type, including other O+ people, and so he knew giving his blood was the right thing to do. His mother, as a hospital nurse, drilled that into his head, too. 'The blood we give saves lives,' she reminded him, time and time again. She had made sure that he had started donating blood as soon as he was physically able to. Still, that didn't exactly make him any more eager as he signed the standard release forms and let them p***k him to test his iron levels -- which he didn't know why they needed to do, he knew he was fine.

And just as expected, a few moments later he was told, "You're fine! And we need O+."

Didn't Destiny City need all blood types with the amount of people that seemed to end up in the hospital, here?

That gave him a moment's pause as he headed over to be sat in the chair. Who would his blood end up going to? There were a lot of people here that ended up in the hospital. A lot of civilians, a lot of senshi, a lot of knights, and he honestly assumed a lot of the Negaverse followers ended up in the hospital too, as impossible to defeat as they sometimes seemed to be. It might have been bad, but he hoped his blood would end up in the veins of one of his fellow senshi or knights, or civilians. He didn't think that anyone deserved to die, necessarily, or at least it wasn't really his right to make that choice, but he didn't really want to help any of them, either.

His babbling thoughts had been enough to distract him while the large needle sunk into his arm, finding a vein to draw blood from. It wasn't enough to distract him, though, from the fact that his arm had to stay still and he couldn't move it until he was told. That honestly just made him want to move the arm even more, but he redirected his gaze determinedly, fidgeting with the toy he was holding and hoping that this would be over soon.

He hated this.

It only took a few moments before he was squirming a bit despite distracting himself with the fidget toy, only to be admonished by the nurse that was watching him. Right. He was supposed to not be squirming. Could dislodge the needle or cause it to wiggle or do any other number of bad things. Impatiently, he glanced to the side, looking at the flow of blood from his arm into the bag that was sitting nearby. How much longer would this take? For a moment, he tried to figure out exactly how much longer it would take by looking at the total amount of blood that had been collected already, and doing those calculations managed to waste a bit more time, but not enough to relax Ignacio, whose eyes rolled over to the other side, looking at his toy again before looking at the people around him.

Other people seemed to have much more patience with this. He didn't understand how they could tolerate sitting there for so long. It had only been five minutes according to the clock nearby, but it felt like it had been a lifetime since he had sat himself in the chair, because he couldn't move himself much at all.

At ten minutes, Ignacio finally gave up on the fidget toy and set it down, digging his phone out of his pocket. He popped open one of his social media applications and idly scrolled through the feed, forcing his mind to focus on something else other than the chair and the needle for just a few more minutes.

It wasn't long before he was back to playing with the toy once again.

At eighteen minutes, the fidget toy was switched to his laying hand, his fingers tiredly rolling it around. The nurse frowned, but she didn't stop him since he didn't seem to be actively moving his arm. That allowed him to take his phone back out and watch a video quietly.

The video was long enough for the needle to finally be removed by the time it was done, which relieved Ignacio. Finally. He scrambled out of the seat almost too quickly, causing the nurse to jump in surprise. He seemed a little too eager to move about, shifting from one leg to the other while waiting for the nurse to tell him he could go. Hopefully there would be some sweets. That was usually his favorite part of donating blood.

The nurse thanked him for his blood donation before telling him that there were indeed juices and cookies and where they were located. That made his eyes light up. After catching his balance for a moment, always slightly woozy in the few moments after he finished donating his blood, he eagerly bounded over to collect his reward for keeping still for something like an infinity. Or twenty-five minutes. Same difference really.

The entire violinist section she’d come with were going in. So with no good excuse to give for it, Cerissé too ended up being dragged along for the ride as well. The line to wait in was at least long enough for a 20 minute wait. So there she was, stuck with four other girls. One of which was a brunette she was fairly certain was named Colette. A nice enough young lady in intention, but when she got started;

“So I was over at the concession table and there was this guy there - very cute, Cerissé, I think you two would look nice with each other - but like-” it began. Colette was a talker. She flirted at poor innocent photographers, and now she was talking about the appeal of certain people on the bus staff as though they were at the store and she was walking through the meat section. Cerissé was embarrassed on her behalf.

A gentleman in the line ahead of them glanced back as Colette spoke.

He continued to stare as an older red haired woman decided to join in. “Well, I’d say you’re ill advised to be looking for a husband for dear Cerissé, she’s more married to her instrument than any man. “ Okay, one - Rude, two - TRUE, but three - RUDE. Cerissé’s expression remained impassive. “Well, at least my violin won’t leave me for a younger woman, Janet.” she stated flatly. Janet had never been married. It was not a personal jab at the woman who instead, laughed.

Colette also laughed.

Behind her, another pair of violinists - another brunette named Hariette and a blond named Josephine. They were talking about the food on the table. Hooooooboy. At least that sounded like a conversation she was going to enjoy. However, she didn’t get much of an opportunity to enjoy it. Instead, she found herself accidentally making eye contact with the gentleman that had looked back at their little group.

He was easily at least 8 years older than she was, but he smiled his best charming smile, and Cerissé instinctively offered one back.

“Sounds like quite the company you keep, miss…” he trailed off and Cerissé gingerly offered him a hand. “Cerissé Belcourt.” she introduced. A small look of recognition met her last name. “I assume you mean the daughter of Gregory Belcourt?” he inquired. She tried to not look surprised. “The same, yes.” she confirmed. The man took her hand, lifting it to his lips briefly. “Harold Baxter. Your father and mine are work associates,” he explained.

Cerissé sighed internally. Of course. She was going to be duped into work related shenanigans.

“I see!” she said, putting on a practiced voice, “Well I actually don’t know anything about what it is my father does, so I can’t really talk too much shop.” she stated sternly. Harold nodded slowly. “Of course. I certainly think such talk would be better left between the grown ups.” he agreed. Gently, Colette nudged Cerissé’s side then winked.

Oh no, Colette. No matter how charming any man was, they would never meet Cerissé Belcourt’s standards. She’d put them in place for a reason, after all.

“I’m here to represent myself and the Symphony, so it would be better suited to talk about such things instead. Do you listen to the Symphony?” she inquired. Harold’s eyes half-lidded, he put on a smile that immediately notified the thought she’d had: Absolutely false interest. “I can’t say I have. I didn’t realize it was full of so many lovely ladies,” he explained. Cerissé again held in a sigh.

“It’s full of talented women,” she stated firmly as the line moved along. Now there were perhaps 5 people ahead of them. Soon she’d get to take a seat and feel like the victim of a vampire.

Harold raised a hand, “Of course.”

Cerissé frowned and Janet seemed to brace herself. It was obvious as the look passed between the four violinists behind the pale haired second chair that a line had been crossed.

“Are you sure you understand?” she stated in a voice so firm, Harold looked startled.

“Yes, I-”

“I’m not sure you DO. Before I was myself, I was first a daughter of a rich man and a lovely lady. Not a talented woman who has worked very hard to get where I am.” She motioned to the other violinists behind her, “and they worked just as hard. If you’re coming to our Symphony to see beautiful people, you’re coming to the wrong place.

If you’re coming to the Symphony, come for talented, hard working, dedicated people.”

Needless to say, the conversation was quickly over. More so when the man was off for his own turn to donate some blood. Cerissé didn’t even look in his direction.

Instead, it was her turn to go up next. Her spot filling out paperwork, stating confidentiality information, blah blah, no I wasn’t cooerced into donating blood, no I don’t have some horrible disease, yes, okay, poke me with a needle, blep.

It was, overall, a painless process. She sat waiting with the needle in her arm for roughly 20 minutes, one of the nurses chatting occasionally to make sure she was doing alright. She watched as her fellow violinists were seated and as Harold finished up, pointedly not making eye contact with her as he retreated.

Overall, it was an uneventful adventure.

Until she stood up.

The world seemed to whirl around her and Cerissé had to brace herself a bit. After a moment of concern, another nurse helped her take a seat with some juice and a snack of some sort of cracker or cookie or....she read the back and the further she read, the less she wanted to put it in her mouth.

“Just rest here until you feel like you can walk, alright?”

Cerissé nodded.

She’d be sitting there for longer than she liked.

Deme

After wandering around for what seemed like hours, but in reality was only a couple minutes. Deme actually found something of interest. A blood drive. Now he wasn't the type that did this often, but he did hear from some people on his team that they had participated in one. Of course the one they participated in, was when he was out of town for a sports conference. So he never even knew about it until he returned. Maybe if he did this one, it might make up for that. Plus he knew he was super healthy so maybe his blood could help someone who needed it.

With that thought he walked in the blood drive, and patiently waited until it was his turn to sign in. He signed his signature quick and next to it wrote his blood type. It was O+, which he wasn't exactly sure what that meant or if they needed it. But it couldn't hurt to write it down right? After he finished he just stood to the side waiting for a nurse to come and show him where to go. To his surprise it really was just as quick as they had mentioned. Which was surprising to him, since it seemed like there were a ton of people here.

Without question though he followed her to a comfy chair and sat down. He did everything she said without question. Actually he wasn't even really watching what she was doing. Which was unusual for him, but he felt like they were pretty competent in what they were doing. After all this set up was pretty through and though out. I mean the CPR class he went to was actually really knowledgeable so he figured why not trust him. As they grabbed his arm and inserted the iv.

He felt a tiny pinch, but it didn't really bug him. After all he had fell on running trails that hurt more than that. "hmm... this isn't so bad. I don't know why people complain about this," he said to himself as he learned back in his chair. He had heard so many horror stories, not from his teammates but from like family members, and school people. Thankfully though, they were all wrong. To him it really didn't feel bad, even though he knew blood was closely losing blood in his body. He continued to just relax until he had filled up two bags. Which he assumed was the limited, since the nurse came back after the second one and took the iv out slowly, and wrapped up that part of his arm. She thanked him and pointed him towards the drink tables as soon as he finished.

He nodded towards her and headed towards the drink and snack table. Though the second he arrived and was about to pick up a cup. He felt mysteriously a bit extra exhausted after giving blood. "Maybe this is normal," he whispered to himself under his breath. as he fought with himself to pick up the cup and fill it with a drink and grabbed a snack. Before having a quick seat in the chairs he had found near the entrance.

Amigar somehow got pushed into what looked like another event. Since everyone at this event seemed to be in quite the rush. She wasn't sure exactly what it was, but it seemed to be pretty busy too. Just like the CPR class she had just come from. "Well I guess I could give it a shot," she said as she stood in the line she was forcefully pushed into. The line moved at a pretty steady pace from what she could tell. People were signing up and being moved to where they needed to go. It was actually an awesome setup and each person here seemed to know their job really well. It reminded her of the setup at her family's bakery. Everyone working so hard together to make the flow go smoothly and seamlessly for those waiting in line.

A smile was shown on her face with that thought as she got to the counter. She quickly read the signup sheet and saw it said blood drive. Hmmm... she'd never done one of those before.

"Um excuse me... but what exactly is the blood drive?" she asked the volunteer in front of her as she signed her name on the sheet.

"Oh it's a blood drive, where you give blood, just a little p***k, and you could save a life,"
the female volunteer said with a smile, "it's very quick and harmless."

"Oh okay," she said as she finished signing up and said a quick thank you and headed towards the waiting area. She took a quick seat and patiently waited for her name to be called. While she was waiting though she was able to kind of observe what was going around her, and read all the signs.

She just happened to see a needle on one sign and felt her heart race a little. She quickly hummed a song, and steadied her heart beat. See now not to many people knew but her and needles did not have a good relationship. It was more like a stay the heck away from me thing. She didn't go near them and they didn't come near her. "Toughen up," she said to herself under her breath, "You committed to this and you are going to do it. You don't back down..."

After saying that she heard her name be called... "Amigar Perry!" a female nurse in white called out. She quickly responded, "Here!", she said with a raise of her hand as she stood up.

The nurse smiled towards her and quickly showed her to her chair. Amigar gulped but continued to have a smile on her face.

"You can have a seat here, and please place your arm up here," she said as she turned to pull a tray towards their location.

"Thanks,"
Amigar said as she did as instructed gulping once more. This time though, the nurse caught a glance of her and smiled back.

"Is this your first time doing this sort of thing?"
the nurse questioned pushing the tray out of her vision.

"Yeah actually, i'm normally way to busy to ever do something like this,"
she said before continuing, "Well that and needles and I don't really get along well." Her face flushed a little as she finished the last part.

"I see well what is it that normally keeps you so busy?" the nurse asked as she wrapped the center of her arm to find the vein. "Oh and don't worry to be honest a lot of people don't get along with them easily, but I promise I will be here to make sure it gets along with you." The nurse said with a smile as she continued. Making sure to keep everything out of Amigar's view.

Amigar wasn't quite sure what was going on, but she was happy she had gotten such a friendly person. "Well I actually help my parents run our family bakery. I'm normally to busy either helping out there, or creating my own baked good," she said with a smile, "It's actually a really amazing french bakery. With a great setting and super friendly staff. That's actually why I'm covered in all this baking stuff. I didn't have time to go home and change before coming here for the CPR class." She looked down at her clothes, she really was a mess. Almost enough of one you could bake her up.

The nurse seemed super impressed, "Wow that is amazing that you are able to do so much at your age. I remember being younger and most everyone I knew was always to busy just trying to have fun." The nurse said as she continued, "I'll need to stop by though, it sounds like a delicious and super cute place. Plus who doesn't love desserts." She said with a slight giggle.

As she listened. Little did Amigar know the nurse had already begun drawing her blood, but with the good conversation it was enough to distract her attention away from what was going on. Enough in fact that she was almost finished. "Well I love baking and the store is like my home. Oh and please do! I'd love to even give you a treat on the house," she said with a smile, "I promise it won't disappoint. You can even chose from anything we have."

The nurse gave a smile as she withdrew the iv and began to bandage Amigar's arm up. "Well I definitely will then, and I look forward to stopping by sometime." she said as she then finished with, "And you are done! Not to bad huh?"

Amigar looked at her arm and was amazed she didn't even realized they had really begun. "I can't wait till you do, and wow I did it..." she said very surprised as she attempted to stand up and for some reason felt mysteriously really tired. Then again maybe it was just the aftermath of giving blood.

The nurse quickly caught her and helped her walk over to a chair near the snack table. Once she got Amigar in a chair she brought her two drinks and two snacks. "here drink and eat this, if you need anything let me know. It was a pleasure speaking with you, and I'll be sure to stop by soon." With that the nurse smiled and walked off.

"Thank you," Amigar said after her as she waved and opened her drink. She quickly finished and started on her next one. As she sat there she decided it might just be a good idea to sit here until her timer went off. After all she would call it a recovery celebration. Since she still couldn't believe she had done this. She couldn't wait to tell her parents once they got home, she thought with a smile as she relaxed in the comfy chair.

Rhona Lee -- Word Count: 1672

To say that Rhona was anxious would have been an understatement. Micah Elizabeth Anne had been terribly afraid of needles, so much so that the sight of one made her feel sick to her stomach. But how did Rhona Lee feel about them? It wasn’t so much the needles themselves that were making Rhona feel anxious as it was the fact that she didn’t know what was going to happen to her when she saw one. This was a new brain. It had new ticks. Would this be one of them?

Rhona stepped up to the table to sign in, looping her name in that unfamiliar script that she was still getting used to. How long had she been Rhona Lee? A year? Two? How much was there about her that she was still uncovering? So many things to discover about her new self – she suddenly enjoyed radishes, for instance. Before she couldn’t stand the texture. Now Rhona wouldn’t eat a salad without them. And salads were a new venture for her as well. Her voice was better – at least she fancied that it was – when she sang in her apartment. She was more patient now. Smoother of tongue and action. No longer did people grate on her like steel wool. She was able to be out and about without worrying about needing to socialize.

Maybe these weren’t even new attributes. Maybe Rhona was just… more herself.

“Rhona Lee?”

Her name dragged Rhona from her considerations.

The nurse held out her hand and Rhona shook it, much it seemed to the nurse's annoyance. Rhona watched dumbfoundedly as the nurse battled Rhona’s hand away and waved her hand in a way that must have been meaningful to her, but left Rhona without answers.

“Your hand, give me your hand,” the nurse finally snapped. Rhona sneered instinctually and snapped back, “There’s this new thing called language. You should try it out next time before you get pissy with people who can’t read your mind.” The nurse got red in the face and Rhona refused to give her her hand. No way was she letting someone this irate near her with a needle or whatever it was that she was going to be working with.

“Miss, I need your hand to tell your blood type.”

“I need someone who’s not irate to be sticking me with things.”

The nurse huffed and sat back, positively fuming by this point. Rhona would not give any ground to her. If she was going to be this way – that was to say, a b***h, then Rhona refused to give her any satisfaction. She stood there, arms crossed and eyes narrowed, marveling in the fact that Micah had always been stubborn, but this would have sent her careening into a temper tantrum. Rhona was still stubborn, but she knew how to compose herself with dignity whens he dug her heels into the dirt.

“Look, Miss,” the nurse hissed, “if you don’t want to donate, then fine, but don’t hold up the line.” By now heads were beginning to turn and stare at them. Rhona had no way of knowing what they though, nor did she really care. She stuck her chin out and squared her jaw as she spat right back, “I’d like to speak to whoever is in charge, please.”

The nurse huffed, shoved her chair back, and stalked away. Rhona knew that she had won.

She came back moments later with a middle-aged gentleman who smiled at her and held out his hand. When Rhona shook it, he responded in kind.

“What seems to be the problem?”

“I think your nurse might be tired. When I came over her held out her hand, but when I shook it she glared at me and spoke to me like I was stupid because I couldn’t read her mind instead of saying that she actually needed my hand to test my blood type.”

The charge nurse looked sideways at the other nurse, who withered at the glance.

“Then when I stated that she needed to speak to me instead of expecting me to just know what to do, she continued to yell at me and treat me like an idiot. I stated that I would like to have a nurse who was not angry sticking me with needles, a reasonable request, don’t you think?”

“I do.”

“Well, when I requested this she pouted and refused to allow another nurse to help me.”

“Is that so…?”

“I think perhaps she needs a break? Meanwhile, may I have a nurse who is in a better state of mind to test me?”

“Of course,” the charge nurse agreed, pushing the rotund nurse away as he did so. “Monica, can you come over here and test this young lady? Janet needs a break. I’m very sorry for the trouble ma’am. We hope the rest of your donation goes smoothly.” Rhona smiled back, finally, and took her seat before the new nurse who held out her hand and said, “I’m going to need your hand, miss. Just a little p***k to draw a drop of blood.” Rhona gladly complied.

Soon, she was whisked away to something that looked like a dentist's chair where she was hooked up to a blood pressure sleeve, a heart monitor, and had her arm tied up with a tourniquet.

“Have you given blood before,” the nurse asked, tapping the inside of her elbow in search of a good vein.”

“Not since high school.”

“Why the long wait?”

“Honestly? Donating blood got me out of class. So I donated whenever I could.” The nurse laughed at her, throwing his head back in mirth. It made Rhona smile. When he calmed down he continued his questioning.

“You wouldn’t happen to remember what arm was easiest to draw from, do you?”

“No sorry.”

“Well, this one looks good enough, but let’s check the other.”

The same procedure was applied to her other arm; tourniquet and tapping. It was decided that the first arm was better since the veins were larger and closer to the surface.

“Wow, you did donate a lot, look at these puncture scars? You almost have a port here. Are you sure it was just blood donations?” Rhona faked a nervous laugh in response and whispered, “promise not to tell anyone?”

“Your secret is safe with me,” he assured her.

He prepped her arm in comfortable silence, restraining her so that she wouldn’t twitch and move the vein that he had found. The alcohol wipe felt too cold and the sudden sensation made her twitch.

“Sorry,” she muttered.

“Happens all the time. People react more to the wipe than the actual needle. Stacy, can you come over here? Stacy is just going to do some explaining to you while I continue to prep your arm.”

A young brunette slid over to the other side of the chair, drawing Rhona’s attention to her. In her hands were a sample needle, several vials, and a little ball.

“I need you to squeeze this, honey,” she cooed, placing the ball in Rhona’s donating hand. She complied, and the nurse continued, “the way your hand pumps is going to keep blood flowing through your arm and into the needle. It’ll make the time that you’re in the chair shorter. Now, this is the needle we’ll be using. See how small it is? You won’t even feel it. The blood is going into these vials. One goes to our lab for testing, just in case you forgot about or didn’t know you had a blood condition. This one goes to the donation center for their testing, and this one goes to an independent lab. This way there are three results, which makes for a more accurate reading.”

“Done.”

Rhona looked over to the nurse on the other side just as he was taping some gauze over the needle now stuck firmly in her arm. Rhona gaped at him, unsure of when, exactly, the needle had been inserted.

“It’s an old trick,” he said with a wink. “If we can keep you engaged somewhere else, you never feel a thing. Most of the pain is all up here.” He tapped his skull. “Keep squeezing there honey. I’ll check back in about five minutes.”

So Rhona wasn’t afraid of needles. Or at least she wasn’t if she was properly distracted. Interesting…

As Rhona pumped the little ball in her hand, she felt her eyelids begin to droop. Odd. But maybe she was just comfortable. A nurse saw her dozing and woke her, reminding her to stay awake so that she didn’t go into shock, and she tried her best to comply but… it was just so warm and so nice. Five minutes went my quickly and the nurse came back, prodding her awake a second time.

“Don’t want you to go into shock,” he chided as he poked the bag. “You’re about done I’d say. By the time I get everything labeled and packed up you should be ready to disconnect.”

“Will that hurt?”

“Not if I can help it.”

The last few minutes Rhona drifted in and out of consciousness, tapping her foot to try and stay awake. It seemed like just a few seconds before the nurse lifted her arm and wrapped bright green KOBAN around a wad of gauze.

“When did you take the needle out,” Rhona marveled.

“Just now. Like I said, it wouldn’t hurt if I could help it. Now you stay laying down, I’ll go grab you some juice and cookies. I’m going to sit you up, try not to doze off while I’m away, alright?”

“No promises.”

She had managed to stay awake, however slightly, and when the nurse came back with the snacks and juice, Rhona thanked him and leaned back to snack and gather her energy. If her pallor was anything to judge by, she thought as she looked at herself in her phone’s camera, then she shouldn’t get up for fear of fainting right at that moment.

He would like to say he didn't know why he was here, that this was some sort of mistake, but it wasn't a mistake and he knew why he was here. One of his teachers the other day, during the time after lessons ended and before the bell rang, had taken the time to talk about the new hospital opening up in the city and what a relief it must be to the other hospitals in the city; due to the large amount of people affected by the terrorism in the city who needed medical care. She had gone on further to mention that they new hospital was hosting several events including a blood drive. Most in the class would have tuned her out at that point had she not continued on by pointing out that everyone was of age, and weight, to be donating blood and in fact she expected everyone to donate. She wanted proof that they had donated and would be giving points for it. Apparently she didn't think that was enough, though he was certain it was as he could remember the looks many of his classmates had worn after that, as she had pointed out how it would help so many people - maybe even people they knew or family members.

She had really pushed them all toward this, the added points being the main reason as she was no easy teacher, as he had walked in and not been surprised to see more than a few of his classmates waiting to donate or already having donated blood. he did, for a moment, wonder if she wasn't being bribed or paid in some way by the hospital to do what she'd done. She had certainly gotten a good amount of teenagers here to do something that he was sure few of them would normally do.

Going up to the desk he took the forms and moved to a seat tucked into a corner to fill it out, wanting to avoid his classmates, he kept to himself as he tried in vain to settle his nerves. He felt sick to his stomach and was seriously doubting that eating before had done him any good, it likely was making this worse. He had, due to his nerves, sort of binged out on eating and downed two bottles of water as well. So while the water might be good, provided you ignored his bladder, he was sure the food was not any good at this moment...it provided his stomach with possible ammunition it could vomit up at any moment if his nerves continued as they were.

They didn't get any better after turning in the paper work either, not that he figured they would, as it seemed the wait time was the worst part. With nothing to do it let his mind wander and allowed him to think of what he had just signed himself up for. Oh god...he really wished he had one of his plushies here if only so he could hide his face in it and block everything out. Block out the nurses, block out the curtained area, block out the chairs and the equipment - block it all out. But it wouldn't have done him any good to bring a plushie with him as his classmates would have seen and he'd no doubt hear about it come Monday.

No, he was here on his own and wanting desperately to curl up and hold himself but unable to do so for fear of what his classmates might say if they saw him acting like a child.

When a nurse came to get him he followed her to one of the private areas, whoever had been there had left the seat warm, and as he fidgeted in the seat she double checked with him the information he'd provided. yes, he knew he was blood type AB; his mother had him tested as a child. He knew it was rare as well, which nurse Joy informed him of, he didn't know or really care how rare his blood type was. It appeared though that Joy knew he was nervous, could see it, and her smiles were made to try and comfort and calm him. She spoke kindly to him even after the questions were done. She tied the rubber band about his arm and that was when he looked away.

Yelping and whining as the needle pressed in past skin and found a vein, thankfully on the first try, he let her continue talking to him. It kept him from looking and moving and it kept him occupied which he needed. He couldn't even focus on what they were saying to each other, just that words were being spoken and it helped - a lot. It kept the food down though it didn't stop his stomach from churning and that, while it might not seem like much, was a big thing because he'd felt damn close to vomiting as he'd walked here behind her.

When the time was up she was removing the needle when he twisted and yelped loud as he jabbed himself with the needle. When the needle did come out she dabbed some blood away that trickled out from under the bandage, that she'd placed as the juncture of lower and upper arm, he thanked her. Watching her smile and help him to his feet he let her point him to where he could get a sugar cookie, or two, and some orange juice. If he needed to sit he could do that as well.

Nodding his head slowly, feeling a bit light headed and still sick, he made his way to collect the aforementioned items and find a place to sit and try and calm himself before he needed a bathroom. He felt small and weak and sick right now, nothing he enjoyed feeling like, as he sat there with his head down and nibbling slowly at one of two cookies, a paper cup of orange juice on the floor by his left foot.

Rayna Farrell

Rayna Farrell was now seventeen years old. Perhaps it was still an act of teenage rebellion when she decided to go and do something that was a worthy endeavour, at least in her eyes, and that her parents had expressively and vehemently remained opposed to. It was perhaps that after seeing the multiple and unexplained bruises that Rayna often had trouble in covering up at times that she decided that enough was enough. Surely being seventeen meant that she could make her own choices on whether or not to donate blood. There was the initial clamouring fear in the back of her mind that she'd still react poorly to the whole experience as she approached the sign in table.

After signing in and getting her blood type determined, B+ it seemed, Rayna had been taken to an open chair in which she was situated comfortably before having her arm swabbed with an alcohol swab in order to disinfect the area in which the needle would be inserted. The strong antiseptic scent overwhelmed Rayna for a brief moment before dissipating a minute later. Almost hypnotically did the teenager watch the nurse preparing the IV ling and collection bag before she turned away from the sight of the needle. Rayna had never really liked needles and always tried to distract herself when needing to be around them or on the receiving end of one, like the various times she'd received immunizations. Taking extreme care to keep her head turned away from the nurse as the needle was inserted to sit just under her skin Rayna concentrated on keeping her breathing steady.

Once the needle had been taped in place Rayna squirmed a little in the chair before finding a comfortable position in which she could endure the time requested to remain quiet. Watching the blood flow from her arm, down an IV line, and into a waiting collection bag that never ceased its gentle shaking motion, Rayna knew that she was doing the right thing. Just how many times had she gone out in the daily battle that she was a part of only to receive injuries that could have been life-threatening? Luckily the injuries had not been that severe but there was always danger lurking around the corner. It was better to be safe than sorry and adding to the donated blood supply would speak to the fact that Rayna was willing to roll up a sleeve and help in a crisis.

Reflections were always a good way to waste time and Rayna was surprised that her mental musings had indeed made the time go by rather quickly. In no time a nurse was coming around to check on her. Satisfied with the results the nurse quickly began to "free" her patient. Rayna forgot to turn her head and watched the needle be removed from her arm with a small groan of disgust. The point of contact on her skin where the needle had sat bled sluggishly and Rayna sighed before taking the cottonball the nurse gave to her and pressed it tightly against the spot. Almost methodically did the nurse return with a bandaid that Rayna managed to apply to hold the cottonball in place. It would stay there until she was ready to leave. As the nurse cleaned up and took the bag of donated blood away Rayna pushed herself out of the chair and began to walk towards the area where a promised sugar rush was awaiting her.

As Rayna perused the selection of drinks and cookies though she began to feel just a little more enervated than she had expected to feel after donating. Was it because that it was her first time that she was experiencing this overwhelming desire to return to one of those comfy chairs and just let sleep wash over her? Attempting to shake off the fatigue that was now readily apparent Rayna picked up a few cookies and an apple juice. Hopefully the snacks would boost her alertness to an acceptable level otherwise she would have to perhaps seek some medical treatment while at the hospital. What a story that would make. Closing her eyes with a sigh Rayna willed herself to stay awake. Her chosen snacks almost lay forgotten in her lap as she tried to analyze those also enjoying the refreshments. Some individuals seemed relatively normal, if not a little pale and others seemed to be experiencing what she was feeling. Rayna had to wonder about that before shaking her head slowly. Maybe she just wasn't cut out for giving blood.

Life was full of perhaps-es and it was with a startling realization that perhaps her parents had been right and donating blood was no easy picnic. After downing the juice that she had taken from the table and nibbling slowly, but steadily, her cookies had also disappeared. Rayna had hoped that the sugar intake would boost her energy but so far it seemed as if there was no effect. Moving back to the table Rayna grabbed a sure-fix solution with a can of pop. Hopefully this would help perk her back up. If it didn't do the trick then, and only then, would she think about grabbing the attention of one of the nurses that were bustling around. Letting her eyes close again Rayna focused on willing herself to feel more energetic after a brief respite. The pop can was opened only seconds later and the teen sighed and stared into the opening of the can before sipping at the acidic beverage. It had to do the trick as she did not really want to disturb the nurses that were hard at work. Pushing herself out of the chair she had been sitting in Rayna did perhaps the most foolish thing that she could have done; she left. Moving toward the exit under her own free will Rayna was surprised as the room spun a bit as she walked. She clutched her drink tightly to her chest with one hand while the other allowed her to keep herself upright.

Making it to the exit and stepping out under her own power was quite an achievement in her condition and Rayna thought longingly about finding one of those "oh so convenient cots" that she'd seen nurses and doctors utilize in TV shows before sighing. She'd have to do without one it seemed.

Kathryn McAdams

Kathryn had decided a while ago that donating blood would never really appear on her own bucket list. That was before all the craziness happened in her life though. Even though the thought of giving blood still made her squeamish Kathryn knew that she could not just walk by another donation drive. Especially after failing to help that injured teen. Kathryn had no clue what had happened to the young girl that she had tried to help after a battle and that thought often surfaced from time to time that she was not adept at first aid as she believed herself to be. Walking to the end of the line that had formed Kathryn tried to not talk herself out of doing this one important task. In that respect she was successful. Soon it was her turn to give her information to the people at the sign in station. Knowing her blood type made it easier and let her skip at least one more potential jab to her skin.

Knowing that the process was relatively quick made it easier for Kathryn to follow a nurse to a vacant chair. Eyeing the setup had the young woman once again swallowing down that little bit of fear that always cropped up when she was uncomfortable about being around something. Steeling herself Kathryn forced herself to sit down in the chair and lean back. The swipe of a cleansing pad brought a brief chill to her skin as cold air washed over it and caused her to shiver. The p***k of the needle into her arm caused her to wince and after a moment closed her eyes to the sight of the room and all that was in it. Perhaps it was just better to block out the sight of that which made her squeamish. It also allowed Kathryn a moment to center herself. All in all though this wasn't too bad. With a sigh she decided to continue with keeping her eyes closed.

A light tap on her shoulder startled Kathryn and she realized that she had possibly dozed off. A nurse stood at her side and once assured that she was fine Kathryn watched in mild interest as everything was gathered up. Looking at the bag that held about a pint of her blood Kathryn was glad she had done this. That was until she was ready to get out of the chair. It took a few failed tries before Kathryn was able to pull herself out of the chair much to the chagrin of the nurse that was now assisting her. Being helped over to the refreshment table was sort of embarrassing but deep down Kat realized that without the nurse's assistance she would have never gotten out of her seat earlier. Once seated again and given a few minutes to recuperate and enjoy a small snack Kathryn glanced at her cellphone's display and sighed. She felt like gravity had increased and all she wanted to do was remain sitting down but there was more of this incredible place to check out. Letting out a small groan of effort Kathryn McAdams pushed herself to her feet and stumbled once before regaining her footing and walking out of the Blood Drive location under her own power.

It took Nurse Harmony all of five seconds to realize she was being addressed, the young woman turning towards Jada with a bright smile.

"Oh, the time?" Her head tilted as she offered the young woman a sympathetic look. Clearly another squeamish volunteer had shown up - bless their sweet, generous heart. "It should be over in a jiffy - maybe ten or fifteen minutes at most? We try to allow our patients time to recover for a few minutes, before allowing them to stand again."

Pointing towards the row of reclining chairs around the seminar room, she offered a more thorough explanation. "It's still early and we've got plenty of staff on hand to assist. I would be happy to personally see to your needs, if you're in a hurry?"

Moving down to the child's level, she grinned. "Just like I don't mind getting well behaved young ladies a juice box - if they'd like one?"
