Heras Box

Nivalis grimaced at the ground.

As much as she enjoyed the opportunity to stray from camp (though no farther than any other girl her age could've gone), the reasoning behind it, in this instance, was unfavorable. Her maglardilla, Cidae had managed to escape from the confines of the tent. It wasn't a fast creature, nor was it intelligent. Cidae couldn't have escaped far. But it also looked like food, and there were probably some beastie Yael natives that would be excited to make a meal of the dumb bug familiar.

Niva wouldn't have cared to be rid of the creature. She didn't like animals as pets, and Cidae in particular was extremely useless, except this particular specimen had been a gift from Zinnia. The younger Elaria was in the Great Mother's arms now, but she had instructed Nivalis that Cidae was a present, and so could not be disposed of on a whim.

It was a pain, but Niva couldn't leave the thing to die alone, and it would not make it back without aid, of that she was sure. It was still a boring, unnecessary task, and since she hadn't thought to ask any of her sisters to accompany her, and with nothing else to fill her time while she searched... Nivalis exhaled, and raised her hands in front of her. She still had a too-minimal control over her magic, but the Matron had said it was something she needed to learn to be better in communication with the forest around her.

And she was searching through the forest.

With a sharp inhale, she bolstered her resolve and tried to force some brand of anything to happen in the space around her: a gust of wind, a branch on fire, a rumbling in the earth. What she got was a whole lot of nothing. She puffed out her exhale and snorted in dissatisfaction. If this was how the whole day was going to go, it would be a long one.

Yava jumped from one tree to the next as he ran along in front of Akeldama. They were out in the woods practicing together again which was fairly normal and the Maglardilla had gotten used to the routines rather quickly.

The Elaria ran with her spear in her hand keeping her eye on her familiar as well as on her surroundings. Nothing ever happened when she was out on her training sessions but when her pet bug trailed off the normal track she skidded in the dirt to adjust her own path. What was he up to now? Did she need to punish him for losing focus so easily?

The maglardilla chittered loudly before finally coming to a stop near another insect. Akel almost barreled into him when she saw the other bug. Did someone else in her village have one? And if so where were they? Didn't they know that insects weren't a match for the other beasts on Yael? she blinked her bright green eyes and turned her head to look around. "Odd.."

What an unfortunate way to spend her afternoon, a waste of time, a waste of effort. All for this dumb bug that she didn't even like. Nivalis huffed as she batted a low-hanging branch out of her way and stepped forward onto a narrow pathway that led from their camp toward a secluded training grounds. Cidae wasn't often allowed out of her tent, disgraceful creature, so it wasn't as if it would recognize the way home. Maglardilla were stupid creatures, of this Niva was certain.

She wouldn't have thought to ask for help searching for the beastie, seeing as it was useless and didn't deserve to waste her sisters' time, but when she spotted one of her siblings standing on the pathway, peering about, Nivalis couldn't help but think that while aid wasn't needed, company was always welcome.

She strode forward.

"Sister," Niva called as she approached, beaming and waving a hand in greeting. "What fortune to have come across you. You must've been out training, and- Oh." She made it close enough to be able to see past her, toward the specimen- two specimens- on the ground. She grimaced. "You've found my... pet."

The familiar call had her turning around to look at who it was that joined her. When she noticed it was none other than the mystic she nodded her head in greeting. "Sister." Akel moved aside as Nivalis said that the other Maglardilla was hers. It was enough to make her raise an eyebrow in curiosity.

"Training it then? If so then don't let it out of your sight for too long. They aren't strong enough to battle the native beasts of Yael." She wasn't trying to lecture the other Elaria but she did want to make sure that the girl didn't lose her pet to an unfortunate end. "I worked with Yava on his speed so he can escape them more easily than before.' As she said the bug's name it moved over to where Akel was and seemed to rub it's membrane against her shins. It was a stupid insect but it knew simple commands and it's name.

"'Training it,'" Nivalis repeated, incredulous enough that the exclamation was almost a bark of laughter. "This useless thing?" She toed her own maglardilla, unable to keep a faint grimace from her features. Animals were the worst, and if it were up to her, she wouldn't waste her time on a bug like this, at all. Insects weren't at all like Naqenni's janarim or Zayana's limbara. Those beasts at least had some utility. Ferocious like their masters, large enough to ride, and nothing like Nivalis' bug.

She shook her head. "No, I don't have any use for a maglardilla. If it is too slow to escape predators, than it shouldn't have wandered out of my tent." Niva put her hands on her hips and glowered down at the specimen admonishingly. "It's lucky I let it stick around at all, because I wouldn't usually keep something with so little value."

"However..." She stooped to collect the thing up into her arms, lest their be more hide-and-seek escapades. "It was a sister who gave it to me, one who is no longer around. She told me I couldn't eat it and that it couldn't fight, and that I ought to keep it around as 'yard art.'" She gave the maglardilla a disgusted shake, and it's thin, spindly legs rattled together at the movement. "So that's what I'm doing."

For the first time, she eyed the second one, the one that belonged to Akeldama. Niva hadn't even realized their were others of teh species on Yael at all, let alone any belonging to her sisters. "You're... training it?"

Useless. Little value. These made Akel narrow her eyes a bit. She might think her bug was stupid sometimes but she had trained it to be useful. When Nivalis shook her Maglardilla Akel moved forward as though to stop her from doing so but didn't. Instead she bunched her hands into fists.

"Yes. I'm training it." Her answer was short and to the point. "If it is to be mine then it will be worthy. I would never own something simply for.. yard art." She would plant a bush or something if decoration was what she wanted. No, her insect moved with her as she ran and was useful in helping her hunt. It was her second pair of eyes without making startling noises. "Yava is useful when I hunt." Akeldama wasn't sure why this sister was so adamant that the bug could be nothing more than decor. If Yava was so lazy she'd make him work harder.

"Oh, believe me," Nivalis hummed as she tucked her creature beneath her arm. "I don't want to own it at all." She wondered if she ought to have told Zinnia as much while the girl was still alive. The younger Elaria had been so spunky and high spirited, she might not have taken offense to it, even if she had been pushy and insistent that Niva adopt this specimen that she didn't want.

But it was hers now, whether she had need or want of it, or not, and Zinnia was no longer around to play with and tend to the creature when Niva neglected it. The task fell to her, though she doubted she'd ever consider it one of special import.

"Ah, I wish I had your patience for making things useful," she murmured. "But animals, bugs especially, are of no interest to me. This one was a gift, so I can't be rid of it now." That, and it was still all she had left of her younger sister. She hated insects, but she loved Zinnia. Niva did't need the maglardilla to be useful and still wasn't sure if it even could be, despite what Akeldama said, but it was hers, and she could only try to keep it alive. "It wouldn't be so bad, if it didn't go running off. I don't like to devote much time to things that don't interest me when I've still got so far to go in more important areas..."
