Even with magical healing powers, Peter felt as though his side was healing much slower than the wounds he received usually did. Maybe it was because of how he’d been injured, the sharp piece of debris cutting open his side, requiring minor surgery to stop any internal bleeding. He was told he was lucky he hadn’t been injured any worse, because he would have likely bled out or died from septic shock.

Part of him not actually dying was in thanks to the efforts of Chara and Harmonia and even that knight whose name he never caught. Oh, and everyone else who helped dust that impossibly large youma bird.

He’d been fussed at, of course. His mother had cried once she was finally back in town, his father had given him a stern talking to about how he needed to really decide if this was what he wanted to do with his life, when he had so many opportunities laid out in front of him. Michael hadn’t bothered visiting him in the hospital, and Chris… he didn’t even think Chris knew, but he had his own issues to worry about.

Peter meandered the city, needing the outside air (because it definitely wasn’t fresh), and was feeling restless and anxious about nothing in particular, when he suddenly heard a loud clang and yelp of distress down the alley nearby.

His heart immediately jumped in his chest, because he didn’t normally find youma in the daytime, but it wasn’t impossible. His hand immediately dug into one of his many pockets of his cargo shorts, pulling out a tactical utility pen he carried with him, rather than his senshi pen. He didn’t need to power up to handle a youma, after all.

But when he turned the corner, he found something more horrifying.

"Benji, what the hell??" he sputtered, immediately running down the alley and reaching up to try and grab hold of the other’s shoulders as he hung upside down on the fence, trying to alleviate any pain or pressure from the fall, not knowing how injured he might have been, frowning in concerned. "Are you okay? What were you doing?"

Unlike Peter, in the end, Benji's injuries were more superficial than life threatening. Sure, he left with a weird crater of a scar on his cheek, and another one on his shoulder, but even his mother was surprised at how quickly they had healed. Aaaaand of course, with that came the lecture from his mother about how he needed to be more vigilant with asking for help and if he had been so he'd still have his eye. Blah blah all the lecturing put him in a sour mood and had him storming out of the fire escape window in his bedroom, completely ignoring the 'punishment' his mother had put in place.

It wasn't as if he didn't care about making his mom worry, but weren't you supposed to be worried when your son came home all beaten up and battered? Why did she have to go all viper on him and aim for his throat the moment he was released from the hospital! But for now he'd just head to campus... He had plants to check on. So there he went, down this road, across this street and back through an alley. Fastest shortcut there was.

Except it wasn't because SOMEONE PUT UP A ******** FENCE!

This was just a super shitty day to say the least! WHY was there even a fence here in the first place! It must have been at least seven feet tall, and made of wood that seemed more like it belonged in a scrape pile rather than made into a fence. And ********... He didn't want to walk ALL the way back around this endless stream of buildings just go in a ******** straight line.

So he did what any smart kid would do. He first threw his bag over the fence, and when it sounded like it hit the other side just fine, he went for it and started climbing, fully intending to just drop down.

But, as luck would have it, the fence WAS just as rickety as it look, and the top part of the panel splintered, cracked, and broke off the moment Benji's foot put any wait on it. As such, down he ********!" he yelped as he fell, face hitting the wooden fence hard above his eyebrow and fingernails scraping down the panels as he tried to prep himself for hitting the pavement. But that pain never came, instead a sharp and stabbing pain formed around his right ankle and he cried out again. He was dangling by his ankle now, blood coming from where the wooden splinters that had broken off the panel caught and cut the think skin about his foot, and bruises forming around the bone that was keeping him from falling now.

Before he could even manage a thought about how he could escape his current predicament before he felt arms come about him and hold him a little more upright before he had too much blood rushing into his head. Though counter productive, he leaned his head back just to see who it was, then grinned, a bit of a red tinge to his face from when he had smacked it against the fence.

"Oh, you know, just hanging around." This was a horrible time to be making godawful jokes, especially with the blood he could feel creeping down his leg and starting to stain his shorts. A slight, involuntary twist made him draw in a sharp breath. <********.... Don't ask questions, just help me down!"

Peter tried hoisting Benji’s shoulders up some more, but he paused to gape at the other teen when he had that horrible joke. By now Peter was able to assess some of the damage and could tell that Benji’s ankle was probably pretty messed up, and he’d probably hit his face against the fence, too. He’d be lucky if he didn’t end back up in the hospital.

"Hold on," Peter frowned, shifting to try and get a better grip on the other’s shoulders. Maybe if he pushed him up – No, that wasn’t going to work. He would have to worry about Benji falling if he tried just pushing him up more.

Carefully, Peter pulled the other away from the fence just enough to be able to shimmy between him and the wood planks, reaching for Benji’s arms to pull them up around him; one arm over Peter’s shoulder and the other around his chest to hang on for when he was suddenly turned right side up again. Peter slid one of his own arms around Benji’s shoulder to try and support his weight, and somewhat blindly reached up to the top of the fence to try and tug the teen down.

It was probably awkward with his face against Peter’s chest now, but it would be the safest way to get him down with hopefully no more injuries than he already had.

"Alright," Peter let out a breath, steeling himself for the pain he was already feeling in his side where he strained against the still healing wound. Two weeks just wasn’t enough, apparently. "I’m going to lift you up, so hang on."

Except it wasn’t just his ankle that was stuck. When Peter tried to grip hold of Benji’s leg, lifting him up to pull him free, he realized the laces had been snagged by a nail. He cursed under his breath, which was already starting to grow heavier from the strain, still feeling rather weak. Tugging at it wasn’t working, and he didn’t have the energy to push at the back of Benji’s heel to get the shoe off his foot.

His arms were starting to shake, and in that moment he wondered if maybe he should have listened to his brothers and father when they originally started suggesting that he try to focus more on starting to lift weights and build up his muscles, because while he was somewhat athletically built, he was also struggling from his previous injuries.

"In… bottom back pocket – left leg – there’s a utility knife," he explained, trying not to pant for breath or wince too much as he tried to keep the pressure off Benji’s leg by keeping him lifted as much as he could. "Lace… stuck…" he said through gritted teeth, doing his best to ignore the sweat breaking out across his brow at the effort.

Damn, his leg was beginning to burn and he could just feel more skin tearing as Peter tried to get him loose.

"Ow... H-hey..." His voice was softer this time, another hiss of pain escaping when Peter moved him about, adjusting his arms so that he was more stable. Gripping tight against Peter's chest, he did his best not to think about how the blood was mixing with sweat on on his forehead from the strain it was taking being stuck like this. The shaking that Peter's arms were beginning to do wasn't lost on Benji either, and he was close to saying to just go get more help when his friend gave the order to get a knife.

At first he was going to make some crude comment about not cutting his leg off, but obliged when it was further explained and scrambled his hands around blindly to get the knife, doing his best to grab it, then hand it to Peter.

"Just cut me loose and let me fall. I'll be fine, okay?! Don't hurt yourself to help me!"

"I’m not - hurting myself - to help you," he hissed, although it was a little too obvious that his voice sounded somewhat strained. He took hold of the knife and flipped it open, being as careful as he could to keep his arm around Benji’s shoulders, holding him up as best he could.

"I – can’t – get it," he growled through still gritted teeth, because trying to twist himself to see while reaching above his head was quickly draining his arm of energy. And just when he thought he was going to have to take a quick break, the tip of the knife finally caught the lace, and he quickly sliced through it –

And then dropped the knife as he grabbed onto Benji’s belt before he could flip over and onto the ground.

"Okay, okay – " he said with heavy breath, shifting so he could try and turn Benji sideways and get him lowered to the ground, biting back the pain as he stretched his side too much.

He ended up stumbling, but at least got Benji turned enough to not fall on his head by the time they both landed on the ground, Peter on his butt and the other, thankfully smaller teen over his legs.

"Let me see your leg," he insisted as he tried to catch his breath, his face splotchy and red from the effort, although Benji seemed to be in a much worse condition than himself. If he could determine whether or not he needed to go to the hospital, that would be a good start.

"P-Peter..." A tinge of worry laced his voice this time as the taller boy seemed way too determined to keep him safe, growling and hissing as he strained under Benji's weight. Then suddenly, he felt himself come loose, and he felt his legs start to tip forward. Once again, he fell.

Benji would swear he saw stars when they both fell, him landing ontop of Peter's legs, the wind knocked right out of him, and he squeezed his eyes shut tight panting hard from his own strain. After a moment of groaning and soft 'fuuuuuck...'s, he managed to open his eye, focusing on the boy under him, who seemed to worry about him before himself. Again.

"Peter, what about your side?! s**t, are you alright? Forget about my leg!" Rolling off of Peter's leg, he scrambled to kneel beside him, forcing up his shirt to see if there was any damage or if anything was pulled. All in all, magical healing was an unfamiliar thing to Benji, how long what took to heal and everything. In his mind, any more accidental bleeding meant exploded organs and that was FAR more important than a busted ankle and a shallow forehead gash. "What of that internal bleeding?!"

”H-hey!” Peter let out a surprised yelp as Benji grabbed at his shirt as soon as he’d rolled off his legs, forcing it up to see where the completely boring bandage was against his side. Well, and bruising galore, because even though the wound was closed and the internal bleeding patched, there was still a significant bruise all the way up and down his side, spreading out from where just the bandage was.

“I’m fine,” he insisted, shifting to try and pull his shirt back from Benji’s hands. “I’m not gonna bust open, if that’s what you think,” he frowned as he still worked on catching his breath, although he gave up on trying to get his shirt back out of Benji’s hands. Instead, he simply reached into one of his other pockets to pull out a small, almost empty water bottle and some gauze in a plastic package.

“Don’t make fun of me. I keep this stuff for times like this,” he grumbled, setting the bottle down so he could wait for Benji to be done inspecting him. The wound the youma caused would definitely end up being the largest scar he had, but he was no stranger to scars. Other than the one on his face, under his left eye, Peter was covered in nicks and scars from the various battles he’d been in over the years. He’d been to the hospital more times than he could count, and he was almost surprised child protective services hadn’t been called on his parents.

“Come here, please,” he requested softly, leaning his back up against the fence to try and get comfortable. He didn’t want to attempt getting up and manage to do something stupid. Like collapse.

“Just let me look and make sure it’s not at risk for getting infected or whatever.”

"Holy s**t, how are you not curled up in pain....?" There were so many bruises still there from where the bandage was, all up and down his Peter's side that Benji had no idea about. Sure he knew about the bleeding but had he really battered that badly? Rather than think about that whole ordeal more and let his worry take over, he conceded his grasp and allowed Peter to move away. Were he allowed, Benji would have touched the scars, looked at them, and asked about just what the ******** was his younger friend doing to look like he wrestled with a giant cheese grater and lost. Then the sting in his own shredded ankle made him wince.

"s**t... Fine, fine... You really are a boy scout huh? Lucky for me, I guess... " Sighing, he moved away, to sit beside Peter, but in a way where his leg draping over his lap. An apologetic look was given as he tried his best not to get blood on the other's pants and he winced again as he set about pulling his shoe and sock off, both damp and spotted in places with blood.

"It's not that bad, really. Probably a splinter or two, or six but I'll be fine. Thanks for helping me down, though... What were you doing back near that alley anyway? Shouldn't you be at home resting and everything? Are you okay?"

He didn’t want to admit to the number of pain meds he was currently on, so he decided to awkwardly pretend as though he didn’t hear Benji’s question about how he wasn’t curled up in pain. At least he wasn’t bleeding. Externally. No, he was sure he wasn’t bleeding internally anymore. Probably. It was just painful because of the damage that had been done.

“Always prepared,” Peter let out a half exasperated, half amused breath as he pulled Benji’s leg into his lap so he could inspect his ankle. He could have cared less about the blood, and instead he simply opened up the bottle of water and poured some of it right over Benji’s ankle, even as it rested against his leg so that the water and blood soaked into his own shorts anyway. They were just clothes, after all.

His hand reached down to pull out the utility pen he’d dropped back down into a side pocket when he saw Benji hanging from the fence. It wasn’t an actual pen, but instead was made up of multiple different tools that screwed together into a single item. He uncrewed part of it to pull out a pair of tweezers, the water washing enough of the blood away to reveal some of the splinters in his ankle.

“Sorry, this will probably hurt like a b***h,” he said, leaning over Benji’s leg to pin it down and more or less block the other’s view of what he was doing to him. Which was really just pulling pieces of wood out of the wound.

“Yeah, no problem. I got bored just sitting around at home. I wanted to walk, that’s all,” he admitted, pouring some more water when he needed to, but salvaging as much as he could. He would have said more, but he was concentrating on trying to fix his friend’s ankle.

"Always prepared..." Echoing back the word, Benji curiously watched what Peter was trying to do, amazed by how skillfully he maneuvered his body around so as not to hurt him. It was kinda gross though how he just let the blood soak into his pant leg as the water provided a small bit of relief to the throbbing ankle. He could almost swear he sighed in relieve at that.

And then the moment the first splinter was pulled out, a loud "********!" was hissed and he leaned forward, grasping onto Peter's arm and squeezing his eye shut as he fought back a whimper that wanted to come out.

"Damn, I feel stupid... I really shouldn't have hopped that fence..." He muttered against Peter's shoulder, his fingers gripping tighter onto Peter's shirt as a particularly thick splinter was yanked out. His toes curled too and he hissed again when that pain kept repeating over and over. He supposed there was more there than he thought. When he managed open his eyes again, he realized there was blood on Peter's shirt from his forehead now too.

"s**t... I'm sorry, I ruined your shirt. Didn't realize I was bleeding there too... Who would have thought the great Benji would be taken out by some damned fence... Bet you didn't think you'd be rescuing a dumbass from a fence on your walk, huh...?"

Peter supposed what he was doing was still rather dangerous. Proper protocol would have been to make sure he was wearing gloves and protected himself from any kind of contamination with any of his own nicks and scrapes, but Peter just figured blood borne pathogens were the least of his worries when he was spending his nights (and days) chasing after youma and getting into fights with dangerous people.

He knew it hurt, and he felt bad as he gripped onto Benji’s leg with his free hand to hold him still, still trying to make sure all the obvious splinters were out. The last thing he wanted was for it to fester and cause an infection.

Benji was muttering about being stupid, his forehead against the arm he was holding onto, which Peter didn’t mind because he knew it was a painful process. He was starting to think he didn’t have enough supplies, though. They would have to go somewhere to get Benji properly patched up. The hospital maybe, if he didn’t want to trust him with his recovery, which was totally understandable.

“Don’t worry about the shirt,” Peter said as he glanced over at the other to see what he was talking about. Not his shirt, but rather where else he might be injured. “You really did a number on yourself. But lesson learned, right? Just make sure you clear it completely next time. I don’t think it helped that your lace got caught,” he said as he quickly wrapped a few layers of gauze around Benji’s ankle, just a temporary fix, and wiped his hands off on his shorts before reaching to push the other boy’s bangs out of his face to see.

“Yeah, hold still,” he said as he reached for what was left of the gauze and water, soaking the fabric before reaching back up to push Benji’s hair out of the way again, trying to mop up some of the blood. “There’s some that got under your eye patch,” he pointed out, reaching to gently try and push it out of the way.

"Hn....." Another soft groan came from him as Peter kept working at his ankle, feeling his eyes water from the pain of it all. He knew it had to be done, and he knew there was no choice in the matter, but he he wasn't happy about it. The warmth from Peter's arm was helpful in making him forget so much pain, and he tried to focus on that and soon enough he didn't feel much pain at all, only a tight pressure from the bandage that finally made it's away around the wound.

"I DID clear it!" He insisted, pouting slightly that Peter would even consider Benji to be anything less than precise! "The wood was old and rotten in places. It gave out! I had calculated all things proper like and then the ******** decided to.... To uh... To break."

His voice trailed off slightly as Peter fiddle with his hair, pushing it back away from his eyes to work at the blood there. Had the other's eyes always been so bright? It was almost as if he was staring into a mirror, though Peter's eyes were darker than his own. And he was close, so close... Gah, it was stupid to think about how easy it would to just close the gap between them... And yet that thought brought a tinge of red to his cheeks, this time NOT caused by any damage he had done to himself. And it only got darker when Peter's hands returned to dab at the blood on his face.

"Huh...? Oh, right. Don't laugh if it's crooked, okay? It's too small." Without clarifying, Benji reached up, untying the knot at the back of his head and pulled off the blood-stained patch that he normally wore. With it gone, he opened the normally eye and seemed almost embarrassed by it. It matched somewhat to the other, natural eye, but seemed brighter, with speckles of glitter pretty obviously there around the iris. But it was only seen briefly before Benji closed both of his eyes shut tight. "It's weird, I know, but not everyone can be rich people, you know... It was bargain bin at best and it's better than having an empty hole in my head."

He paused, feeling that his words were more mean than he thought, and opened his eyes again to gaze up at Peter. "... It doesn't hurt anymore, so go ahead and clean it up if you want... The blood I mean..."

Peter waited until Benji was able to get the eyepatch removed, taking a moment to actually look at the other’s fake eye before Benji closed them both. There was no real shift in Peter’s expression. Maybe his eyes widened a bit with curiosity and intrigue, but there was no disgust, if that was what Benji was waiting for. And Peter definitely didn’t laugh, even before he realized that Benji seemed a little embarrassed about it.

“If you had one that actually fit, would you bother wearing the eyepatch?” Peter asked, although he was cautious about pushing too far. He didn’t know how sensitive the subject was for Benji. “You were injured, right? That’s how you lost it?” he asked as he dabbed at the scrapes across Benji’s forehead, his other hand still holding his hair back enough to be able to get as much as he could.

“I don’t think it’s weird,” he clarified after a few moments. “It sucks that you lost your eye, but… it’s actually kind of cool. No offense,” he quickly added, again not sure how sensitive the subject was. Maybe thinking something like a fake eye being cool was not the right thing to say. Peter knew he would hate to lose half his vision, but at least Benji hadn’t been hurt more than that. He could have been killed.

“You should still be careful,” he added, still fussing with Benji’s face. “Not having two eyes messes with your depth perception, doesn’t it? There’s another guy I know who only has one eye. It took him a long time to get used to it.” There was a pause, Peter frowning. “I don’t know him personally, but my brother and his wife do. But there. You’re good as new,” he said as he lowered the bloodied gauze from Benji’s face. “We should still get you somewhere with better medical supplies, though. Or even to the hospital, just so they can check on your leg.”

Though he was embarrassed by his lack of eyeball, Benji didn't really expect any negative response from Peter. He was expecting more of a series of questions and poking and prodding of it. Maybe not Peter actually touching the weird little thing, but still getting more handsy than he needed to be around the socket.

To his pleasant surprise, only the questions came out, and Peter's hands were just as gentle as they were before when working on his ankle. Well, he assumed they were gentle because it hurt like a ******** so even if he WAS gentle it still was painful. This time there wasn't any pain at all, only a small sense of awkwardness. Benji wasn't about to look away from the other though, not when he just knew the extra eye wouldn't follow.

"I dunno, maybe? When I'm just doing day to day things that don't require alot of movement I'd be more likely not to wear it. But when patrolling or successfully hopping fences I might still wear it, if only because of fear of it popping out. A proper one wouldn't but you never know.... Do you remember when my eye was just bloody and gross? It was injured way back when, but dumbass me refused to go to the doctor. At the time, it was all 'well, our insurance sucks a** and it's not that bad so it'll be fine.' Yeah, it would have been if not for the whole senshi s**t and having it get reinjured over and over again. Then it got infected and was unsalvageable so... Yeah." The subject of his eye wasn't that big of a deal, and he didn't mind telling more about it, it was when his fake eyeball was made fun of that he got irritated. Right now, he was calm and quiet, eyes closing again in relaxation as the fingers tended to his forehead.

Despite the whole situation in general and what caused it, this was nice. A first for Benji, being tended to without the person having been paid for or having someone yelling at him while they did so.

"Kind of cool? Really? Well, if I ever manage to get a new one, you can have this one, as gross as it is. How's that sound. Don't even need to lose an eye. Before I lost it, though, I was already pretty much blind in it. Running into walls and s**t happened alot, kinda funny really. Shame no one recorded it." He grinned at his own stupid joke wanting to lighten the accidentally dour mood he created. He wasn't one to stay down for too long anyway.

"No, I'm not going to the hospital. Do you know how much an emergency room visit is? Even with insurance, the copayment is through the roof. I'll just wash it when I get somewhere and rebandage it or something. I'll be fine." Benji was firm in his words, opening his eyes to give Peter a hard stare that eased up pretty quickly. He was only trying to help, and Benji knew he shouldn't be so mean about it. "But I think you've done a great job in giving first aid. If I had a Helping Benji or a Treating the Wounds of a Dumbass Badge to give you for your belt, I would. Sadly I do not, but... I think I have something else to give though."

He couldn't help it. There was no stopping what was going to happen. Everything lined up so perfectly for it, from their proximity to one another, to the gentle touches that Peter provided while tending to him, to how Benji's own heart felt like it was thudding against his chest while his cheeks were lightly flushed. Maybe he really did like Peter... After all, he hadn't really stopped thinking about their time together in the hospital, or about how he remembered waking up, one arm draped loosely over the other, fingers laced together... Friends didn't just do that right? Not at their age, he figured, so it meant something... At least it did to him.

It happened so quickly, so smoothly, a hand came up to gently grasp onto the front of Peter's shirt to pull him close, and another hand moved to the ground, stabilizing himself as he managed to lean forward without incident. Then he leaned forward to capture Peter's lips with his own.

With everything else going on, the kiss, to Benji, just felt right, and this time, he did not pull away.

Maybe things would have been a lot different for Peter if money was something he had to worry about. He liked to think that he didn’t take things like money and basic necessities for granted, but he also knew that his life was significantly different than a lot of others out there. He was at least grateful that his parents, while they didn’t hide their wealth, didn’t really flaunt it either. His father still worked well into his sixties, and his mother often helped with charity events. His brothers both volunteered while in high school in exchange for allowance, and the only reason the suspected that he wasn’t being told to do that as well is because his parents knew he would go out at night regardless of how tired he was.

Insurance, or not having insurance, was bound to be expensive, and Peter frowned because he knew that if he had to worry about things like money, his scar under his eye might have been a lot worse than it was. Or any other injury he had that put him in the hospital multiple times.

He didn’t say anything in response to Benji offering his eye if he managed to get a new one, but he did watch the other curiously as he spoke, talking about how he’d done a good job getting him cleaned up, and if he had a badge to give him then he would.

Peter supposed he should have expected it, especially after the night they’d both been stuck in the hospital. Even still, he didn’t pull away immediately as Benji reached out to grasp onto his shirt, pulling him close. Benji’s leg was still over his own, so it wasn’t as though he could easily move away, regardless. But Peter didn’t jerk away when Benji kissed him, nor did his expression shift into surprise. If anything, it grew a little sad and concerned.

There was a long moment where Peter patiently waited for Benji to pull back, but when he let the kiss linger, Peter gently placed his hand over his friend’s as he grasped at his shirt, and slowly leaned back.

“Benji… I think we need to talk about this… I don’t want you hurt. And I don’t want you thinking I’m leading you on,” he said softly, ignoring the fact that his heart was racing because, even if Benji was a boy, he’d still kissed him.
