It was over. Gelria had never been so happy to hear such a thing before in his life, and was going to just run home as fast as he could, when his eyes landed on his new found friend, the senshi he had been fighting the snake with this whole time.
Holding his injured arm tightly, the senshi made his way over, giving a wry smile. “Well…we’re not dead. That’s a good thing, right?”
He looked the redhead over and sighed. “You didn’t get hurt too badly, did you? I know I kind of froze up after I got bit and then the snake disappeared and I just…I just stopped living pretty much there for a while. I…I really don’t know what possessed me to even…think I could try and help anyone out…I’m still so new at this…you know?”
He reached up his hand, grimacing at the blood that covered it and sighed, nudging some hair out of his face with the back of it.
“I think…I think we won…though…right? I mean, we’re not dead.” It was a fact that he felt needed to be said again. Just to reassure himself that it was true. Because…Gelria wasn’t stupid. He knew that that snake could have killed them…and the other monster. The big monster could have easily done it too.

"We're not dead," wasn't exactly a ringing endorsement of their performance or their situation, but over his time living in Destiny City with these monsters and these superpowers, he had learned it was probably the best one he could expect. So, he returned the wry smile. "Nah, I'm alright." He'd been through worse. A lot worse. Encke pulled at his sailor collar just a bit, like that might release some tension. "Glad to see you are too. Had me worried for a minute there." Gelria didn't seem all that old, at least not to Encke. Not that any of them were. A twenty-four-year-old wasn't exactly the most mature of veterans either, though in comparison it might seem like a lifetime. Maybe he should try to offer some veteran-esque advice. "It's scary. You did a good thing by trying to help out. Don't beat yourself up about locking up or anything. It gets easier." Sorta. "That was definitely a win though. Those big youma are dangerous. The less of them, the better."

Nodding Gelria covered the wound on his arm with his hand once again, idly wondering what he would say to Xi-Wang…not that he’d be at the house…and he could always just wear long sleeves. No explanations needed, right?
Letting out a long sigh, he looked back at the other senshi. “How do you do it? How do you keep all of these things secret from the people you care about? I think…I think that’s my biggest struggle, because I have a guy I’m dating and I can’t figure out for the life of me how I can have this great bite on my arm and him not ask questions about it…and when he does…I’ll have to lie.”
Lying wasn’t a thing he really liked to do, but Ember had told him he wasn’t allowed to tell anyone who he was or awful things would happen, so now he was in such a moral dilemma and this older senshi seemed like he at least had an inkling of what the heck he was doing so…
“You’ve been doing this for a while, yeah? You sound like you know what you’re talking about at least. So how do you do it? How do you keep your mouth shut about these things when you’re going about your daily life? Like…seriously…and sorry if this is too much of a noob question…but…”
He shrugged, looking pretty miserable for a moment. “You’re the first senshi I’ve gotten to talk to…so…”

The question admittedly took him by surprise. He was expecting to be asked about the youma or the monsters or if things like this were frequent, not how he hid his identity so well over such a long period of time. And admittedly, that did bother him. Encke didn't really like secrecy. It wasn't really his thing. Why hide what you could be open about? Sure, over time entertainment reporters had made him value privacy, but that was different than secrecy. And besides, maybe there wouldn't be such strange hatred of the "terrorists" if people realized the senshi were their neighbors, too, and they were working to protect them. Though he supposed the same would end up applying to the Negaverse, who were the actual terrorists. The last thing they needed were more sympathizers. Then again, maybe public pressure they couldn't escape would shape them up-- "That's not an easy answer," offered Encke, realizing that statement was probably rather unhelpful. Duh. It wasn't false, though. When was it easy to keep a secret from the people you were closest to? In a way, Encke had somewhat failed at the secrecy part--it wasn't like his own love was entirely unaware of what Encke was up to--but no one else knew, still. "It sucks, I'm not gonna lie. You find excuses. You divert attention. But it's for their--his safety." He frowned a bit, realizing that wasn't an entirely satisfying answer. Maybe he should explain it further. "The alliances in this city are all over the place. It's hard to say your boyfriend would be safe if he knew. Imagine if they," he clearly meant the Negaverse, gesturing in the direction the youma had been in, "got a inkling that your boyfriend seemed to be alright with the terrorists. They could grow suspicious, see him as a target maybe. Maybe he knows something." Encke shook his head. He hated how that sounded. "So it's to protect them. When you frame it in that light, it becomes a bit easier." Though not entirely. Secrecy could be poison in relationships. He wasn't going to discourage him, though. Not to that level.

Gelria listened, trying not to say something snarky when Encke said that it wasn’t an easy answer…wasn’t that the whole reason he was asking the question? But, he stayed quiet and sighed as the redhead continued, saying everything that he didn’t want to hear. Honestly, he had been hoping that Ember had just been wrong. That the warning was unfounded and he could go right now and unburden himself to Xi and everything would be okay and they would cuddle and drink some hot chocolate…
But no.
He’d have to make something up. Something…intense. But…how normal was it to get hurt in a robotics lab? Pretty normal. At least he had a readymade excuse…and he could get it cleaned up and just never have to talk about it if he could help it.
Finally, the senshi let out a sigh. “What a pain…but…if it’s to protect him…of course I’ll protect him. I’ll do whatever I can to protect him…”
This was his life now. Secrets and lies. “Thanks for not ditching me with that…snake. That could have ended a lot worse…so…seriously, thanks. I’d shake your hand if mine weren’t covered in blood, but…we should do this again sometime maybe? I could use a friend who I can talk to about this stuff…”

Sensing the discouragement, Encke continued, "I know that's not really an ideal answer, but it's what things are like right now. Maybe, later on, things will become clearer and you'll be able to say something." Or it would just come bumbling out, or he'd get discovered, but hopefully neither of those cases happened. Not that it had really turned out badly for Encke, with his love knowing, but he was almost positive that wouldn't be the case for everyone. How could it be, with so many secret identities in this city? He didn't personally know a lot of the people on either side, but he had certainly seen plenty. They were all people with second lives, too. "It's good you want to protect him, though. He means a lot to you, then. You'll manage." There wasn't really anything better he could offer than you'll manage, but at least it was something like encouragement, right? Encke silenced himself when Gelria resumed talking, letting out a laugh that was considerably less somber when Gelria pointed out his hand was covered in blood. "You need a napkin? There's gotta be one somewhere nearby." Maybe. They were at a power plant. Not exactly a restaurant. Maybe there was a cafeteria somewhere inside the place that they could find one? People had to work there, right? "But yeah. I'd like having more people to talk to, myself."

Grimacing, Gelria nodded. “Yeah. I’ll manage.” The echoed statement was rather somber, but at Encke’s laughter about the blood, he raised a brow, frowning slightly. “Oh I see how it is. You’re laughing because the snake was too stupid to hurt you but I got an arm full of teeth, hm? Laugh it up.”
This was so much easier. Banter was always easier than thinking about difficult things and laughing was always better than worrying. “I’ll be fine. I’ll stop somewhere on the way home, a gas station or something and wash up…those places never ask too many questions, right? Besides, I live alone so even if I don’t get washed up right away, there’s nobody to ask any questions, so, that makes life easier too.”
He paused, trying to think of how he could keep in contact with Encke, how they could schedule new walks together and what not. “Oh! You have one of those fancy cellphones? The cat—Ember said something about taking someone’s picture to get their information? Is that real? Sounds kind of creepy, but if you want a picture of a tired, blood stained me, now’s your chance.”
Gelria did a duck face. Looking right at Encke and waggling his brows. “Get my good side though. Which is all of me. I am all good side.”

Encke's eyes twinkled teasingly for a moment, also clearly enjoying banter a bit more than the serious conversations. Most people did, after all. But the serious conversations were necessary. Good to balance them with a bit of fun when he could. "Well, at least you don't live with anyone. It does tend to make this whole mess a bit easier." Encke couldn't live by himself. He shouldn't even if he could. It meant that it was definitely a bit harder to hide things, and only so much could be explained by stunts going wrong or tripping over his own feet. He raised both brows at Gelria's posing. It didn't take long for him to change his expression into something that might have come off a bit flirtatious if the situation was a bit different. "Damn boy, you fine." As he said this, he withdrew the said fancy cellphone and aimed it at Gelria, pretending to ponder where the best side was. Then he snapped the picture. "Huh." He guessed that did work. It was a bit creepy, honestly, but-- "See, got you now." He flipped his phone around in his hand to show him. "I guess you gotta take a picture of me now too? Hopefully I'm not too florescent for these cameras." His tone was almost sing-song.

Gelria grinned. This was fun.
He pulled out his own phone, holding it with the frilly part of his sleeve so as not so get it covered in blood and snapped a picture of Encke, laughing. “Man, you do sort of glow, don’t you?” The senshi watched, fascinated as the phone registered all of Encke’s information, placing his contact in the list.
He was Gelria’s only contact…so it would always be easy to find him, that was for sure. “Well…I’ll text you the next time I decided to don this…getup and go out…though I’m not really sure when that will be…I honestly…I feel like I’ve done enough senshi things to last a lifetime now…but I guess the only way to really beat that feeling is to keep doing this…so…”
Sighing, he shrugged. “How about you text me when you want to do this again? And I’ll make an effort to do it too. I’ll try to come out again before the week is over…just so…you know. I do it. I’ll send a message when I do…maybe…I don’t know. Maybe.”
He was feeling so tired now, be it from blood loss or just the drain of his adrenaline or whatever it was…all he wanted to do was curl up in bed and sleep.
Maybe for the next ten thousand years. “I’m really glad I met you, Encke. And I’m really, really glad we didn’t die.”

"Yeah? I'm not sure who designs these outfits, but clearly Encke means purple and blues and bright a** colors," remarked Encke, glancing down at his pants. Seriously bright. Encke couldn't help looking at Gelria's arm again in concern when he put his phone down. Was he sure he was alright? He didn't seem to be complaining about it actively and thought he could go home so it was probably fine. That dried blood just didn't make it look fine... "I can do that. Or you can text me. Just don't push yourself too hard, alright? That arm injury looks a little not good." A little not good? That was a rather dumb way of saying bad. Good job, Encke. He shook his head out of it and offered a bit of a grin. Moving on. "It's nice to meet you too, Gelria. You were a big help out there. Thanks."

“Eh…it’s fine I’m sure. When I wash it off I’m sure it’ll be hardly anything. Maybe I just bleed a lot.” Or maybe he was hurt worse than he would like to admit, but he doubted it. If that really was the case, he’d be dead by now, and Gelria had established it several times that they hadn’t died.
And that was good.
He gave a little wave, keeping it short because…nobody wanted to see that hand right now, and set off for home, eager for two things. A shower, and some bandages and his bed.
…Okay, three things. But still. He was more than eager. Very eager.
The most eager.
And he was alive.
