Elna was out in the backyard, watching the trees move in the slight breeze and tilting her head to the side, her mind racing with questions. Why was it so hot in Tale, why was the breeze happening now when there almost never was one? Things that she just thought of whenever she was sitting still.

She leaned back onto her palms and looked up to see clouds in the sky. She heard the door close behind her and she whipped her head back. It was her mama. She was so pretty, Elna noted, her eyes on her mama's blue skin and streaked hair.

Liira brushed her hands over her shorts, clearing what was left of the water off of them. She had been cleaning the house, but now that that was over, she found the house was awfully quiet.

Tau and Liio were out in the market, doing whatever boys did best she supposed, but she knew Elna was around here somewhere. She reached for the back door, knowing she was probably somewhere nearby and wasn't disappointed. Elna was sitting sprawled out in the backyard, sand covering her legs and pants. "Elna, what are you doing?" She asked her youngest daughter. Of all the things her other children were, Elna was probably not. While Tyyn was wild and nearly out of control, Elna was cool and collected, even at her young age.

She matched Liira's cool yellow eyes with her large green ones and with a serious look on her face she answered her mother's question. "I'm sitting." It was almost too obvious what she was doing.

Though she knew that's not what her mama was asking. She opened her mouth and started on the big questions in her head. "Mama, why is it breezy today?"

Liira saw the look in her daughter's eyes, and heard the answer to the question she posed and she sighed. She should have known better. The little girl she was raising was awfully serious for someone so small. Though she can't say she didn't remind. Liira of herself when she was young.

The question that ran out of Elna's mouth had her eyebrows furrowed. Was it going to be one of those kind of days? Elna had too much time on her hands when she started asking the kinds of questions that had no direct answers. She sat on the ground next to her and pulled her hair to the side. "Why do you want to know El?" She asked her daughter.

Elna thought about that for a long time. Why did she want to know, what was it that made her come up with these questions that she felt like she needed to know the answer to. "Well because mama. Wouldn't you want to know?" It was just in her nature, she just had these questions burn up inside of her and she might be able to get the answer from her mama. She knew a lot after all.

"So do you know mama? Why is it breezy today when other days it's not?" She couldn't get off of the question. And while it was typical for children her age to have questions about why things do what they do and why stuff happens the way they happen, Elna was more persistent than most and had a better attention span. She wouldn't be blown off that easily.

She laughed at her daughter's persistence. She knew it would take more to shake her, so Liira gave in.

She looked up at the trees overhead and watched them sway gently in the wind. It was always stifling in Tale, any wind typically lacking. "Well baby, sometime it just is. Most people don't know why either." She used one of her hands to pull a piece of leaf out of Elna's hair. "Maybe when you get older you can find out why it blows some days and doesn't others." She offered.

Her mother gave her an answer and her lips pursed. It wasn't what she was expecting. "Mama, I don't think I want to be the one to find out though. That sounds like it would take a lot of time."

She put a hand over her eyes and sighed. "I just wanted to know." She almost whined. "Well then why is it so hot here? Is it hot in other places?" She asked her mother. She had more questions, questions that needed to rattle around her head before coming out of her mouth. She looked at her mother and pulled on her pant leg. She always sweated in Tale.

Of course there were more questions. She looked to her daughter before reaching over and pulling her closer. "It's hot here because that's the way it's always been." She knew Elna wouldn't be satisfied with that answer either. "But in other places it can be very cold. Zena is very cold." She added. "It's where I was born. You haven't been there yet, but maybe one day we can go together." She offered to her.

The last time she had been to Zena was when she was still pregnant with the twins. It had been years and Liira missed her parents. It would be nice to be able to show them their other grandchildren. "Gran and Pops are from Zena, too. You remember me telling you about them?" She asked Elna.

Again, Liira's answer didn't give Elna anything other than a sour look on her face. "Is it because no one knows why Mama, or just you don't know why?" She asked. She knew her mama was smart, and if she didn't know, maybe it's because no one knew.

She mentioned cold and Zena and her grandparents and Elna leaned in closer to her mother. "What does cold like Zena feel like mama? Is it as cold as when it's winter time here? Or as cold as the ponds in the forest when you jump in?" She thought about it some more before answering her mother again. "I would like to go and see Zena." She stumbled over the word Zena, not used to saying it. "If it's where you grew up I wanna see it." Her mother had mentioned it before, had told her stories about her Gran and Pops, but to her they weren't real, it didn't really register. She had never met them before.

Her next questions surprised Liira, she wasn't exactly expecting that. "Well... I'm not sure if anyone knows the answer to that, but I haven't met anyone who does yet." It was as honest as she could be with her daughter. She had no idea if it had been figured out.

Elna asked about Zena, how cold it was and the thought of the snow put a smile on her face. "It's so cold it snows there. It's fluffy and white, and icy." She knew Elna had never felt anything like it so there was no comparison to make. "It's colder than winter here and colder than the ponds. Much colder. You're going to have to see it for yourself so you can feel just how cold it gets there. Even in the summer when it's so hot here." She wrapped and arm around Elna and gave her a sideways hug. "We can plan a trip and go. The whole family can go." She offered.

Elna looked at her mother with a sideways glance when she mentioned the whole family. "Everyone? Even Nan and Uncle Taye?" That was a lot of people to go all the way to Zena. She thought it would be crowded. "Can we brind Daddy's scorra and your raptrix too Mama?" If they were bringing the whole family, they would need to bring the animals too, or else who would feed them? She thought Daddy's scorra was probably too dumb to find food itself like a normal animal.

Liira laughed when Elna brought up the extended family. It wasn't what she meant but she could see the confusion. Elna and Liio were always visiting their grandmother and their uncle, so of course they would be in her mind when she said the 'whole family'. "No baby, I mean your daddy and your brother and sister. Nan and Uncle Taye would be here."

She ran her fingers through her daughter's hair. "Daddy's scorra would be too cold in Zena. But we could bring Mahri. Mahri likes the snow." Her raptrix had been with her for many years now, and Liira was sure Mahri would love a chance to see snow again. The last time she had seen snow was back when Liira was pregnant as well.

Her mother corrected her idea of the family going and she just looked at her with a stern face. "Oh." She didn't think it was very right to exclude them, but at least it wouldn't be so crowded on the trip.

"I'm glad Mahri likes snow. She's pretty." It was an unrelated connection she made, but in Elna's mind it made enough sense.

Liira looked at her daughter in all seriousness and then paused when her next words came out. "Well she is very pretty." She agreed with her, a laugh bouncing on her words. She had a hell of a time trying to figure out her daughter's trains of thought.

She laughed again before asking her next question, which she wasn't sure if she would regret or not. "So El, any more questions you have floating around in there?" She poked a finger gently to her daughter's forehead.

Elna received the poke from her mother, and it only made her furrow her brow and frown more. Well did she have other questions? She knew she did, but she was also tired of thinking.

"When are Daddy and Liio gonna be home?" She asked her mother. If they came back, they could eat lunch, and now that she was satisfied, food was what was on her mind.

"I'll ask more questions later, Mama." She responded.
