Volney sat on a branch high enough from the ground that his tail did not drag but not high enough that he could not see the others on the ground. His head darted this way and that, alert for any horse that crossed his path. He was looking for someone soft, some one different, and someone who was lonely but not just like him. His feathers ruffled and he shook himself, flowers breaking free of his long tail.
"Today is so nice. Why am I not finding others?" chirped the bird crossly. He hopped from one end of the thin branch to the other in an attempt to free his frayed nerves. The only times he saw quiet like this is when a predator was around. But the bird saw no predator. He murred quietly. He turned his head and burried it into the flowers picking at them with his long needlelike beak. He was looking for bugs and dead flowers, pecking them out and tossing them aside as he found them. He saw no predator so it must be safe, right?

Roxx, while a bonded familiar, was an independent creature who often struck out on his own. He enjoyed spending time with others, socializing and having fun, but as any growing bobcat, he also needed to eat. Of course it was awkward, never knowing what animals of these lands could scream for mercy, but it was a risk he was willing to take. Besides, those cries only lasted a few seconds before he sank his fangs into them, so all turned out alright in the end.
On this particular afternoon, his morals had flown out the door, for he felt as though he hadn't had a decent meal in days. So, familiar or not, speaking or chirping, when he had laid his eyes upon a particularly colorful bird nearby, he had begun to stalk it. Luckily, the spring greenery was starting to appear and his colorful spots began to look more like flowers than the spots of a saber-cat.
This particular bird had a very long and elegant tail, one that he was most interested in snagging with his claws. Moving slowly and getting closer with every step, he unsheathed his claws and then leaped high into the air, his claws outstretched. He managed to snag the tail feathers of the bird above, just so, and dragged the creature to the ground. Laying his other paw gently on the bird's wing (if he broke it the bird would screech violently, which would in turn hurt Roxx's ears quiet badly) he sneered down at his meal.
"Do be quiet, precious meal." He requested politely, in case this was another talking creature. "This will all be over shortly."

Volney squawked as something slammed against his sensitive tail and tangled into the sleek feathers. His beak gaped open slightly as he was dragged from his perch. His eyes squeezed shut as something large pressed against his wing holding it open. He peeked at his attacker with one teary eye, the cat blurry through his pain. The larger colorful cat spoke, Volney not clearly making out his words.
"Why me?" the bird wheezed. Summoning up what little courage he had in the face of such a clever predator, he attempted to peck at the paws holding him hostage.

Roxx Starr peered down at the strange creature, tilting his head to one side as the bird wheezed out its question. To answer it would mean that he would be further acknowledging that this was a sentient creature and that would give him a belly ache.
It was better to pretend that this bird was a stupid one. One that had simply gasped for air rather than spoken anything at all. He slid out his claws into its plush feathers and hissed in irritation at the pecking he received from the action.
He opened his maw and was ready to crush the tiny spine in his teeth, when quite abruptly the wind was knocked right out of him.
"OOF!" His paws flailed and he rolled over, the bird falling from his claws, leaving no more in his claws than a few pulled feathers. Now he was wheezing and struggling to get his bearings. Nearby, he heard a gruff voice nearby and eventually moving himself into a laying upright position, he was able to identify his assailant.
It was a goat. A lady goat, by the looks of it. How tedious. "Excuse me, but that's my lunch you're standing over." He growled at the goat. "Not anymore it isn't." Retorted the goat, nastily. What a vile creature; not beautiful in the least.
"Look, goat, if you want to mess with me that's fine, but I will be eating that bi--OOMPH!" The goat had charged and hit Roxx directly in the chest. He did a backwards somersault into a bush before he lay there, snarling and panting. "Fine!" He spat. "You eat it then!" And while he envisioned himself stalking off proudly, he really had to nurse a limp as he went off, his tail high in the air as he went.Ace watched the bobcat leave with wary eyes and then walked over to where the creature had been standing mere moments ago to make sure he was really gone. Satisfied, the goat returned to the side of the bird. She had been certain that it had spoken, when she passed by the hunt in action. Normally, she would have let such things slide; all creatures had to eat after all, but if the bobcat had been knowingly hunting another familiar? Well, that was something that Ace would not let stand.
So, without thinking on it any further, she had rammed the feline and stood protectively over the bird. When threatened, she rammed him again. She had seen those massive fangs on the beast and she wasn't about to give him any chance to recover. Besides! How was she supposed to return to Savannah and Tove if she got hurt? Then she would end up humiliated as well as beaten on and that wouldn't do one bit.
Well then, back to the bird. "Do pardon me." Said she to he. "But are you yet living?" The whole thing would be a waste of time if the bird was dead! What if the beast had sliced it with its claws before Ace had intervened? It did look like it was missing a feather or two, but Ace didn't see any blood.
"Helloooo?" She prompted it again. "The cat's gone, you know."

The bird let out a weak cheep and opened his eyes slowly. He breathed a heavy sigh of relief that the cat was nowhere to be found. Fluffing his feathers, he used his wings to weakly flap himself upright. The flowers in his tail were torn and some were missing and his bore a nice red scratch across his back and where a claw had pierced his wing bubbled up with blood. But he was alive and nothing was broken.
"I thank you miss," the bird stated with a bobbing bow, "you saved my life. I owe you a great debt that I cannot begin to imagine how I will repay." He turned to preen the blood from his wing trying to come up with a way to repay the goat's kindness. "I am Volney. I come from a dreamkeeper herd. But I found no bonded for me there. So I am travelling to see what I can. Who might you be?" he asked in between cleaning his wing feathers.

Well, the bird wasn't dead, thank the gods, Ace found. In fact, after some awkward flapping, it had righted itself and was now standing on two legs and cleaning the mess that it acquired in its wings. She hadn't any notion of telling bird sexes apart, after all.
It was in the way the bird spoke that she suspected it was male, so pronouns shifted in the goat's mind and stuck. Alright then, male it was. "The name's Ace." She replied. "The herd I come from... It's more of a family group, really. Got my bonded, that's Savannah and her lady love, which is Tove. I suspect we'll be having little ones along the way soon, too." She added as an afterthought. With how in love the mares were, some spirit or another was bound to take notice.
"You can repay me by coming along with me to my herd." She said, having already decided. She didn't like the idea of this bird being left to his own devices when he was injured and Ace herself didn't fancy the notion of leaving him by himself only to hear him squawk in alarm moments latter when a different beasty tried to jump him.
Bending her knees, she lowered her horns to where the bird might hop on. "I've got a few stops to make, since I was out here gathering my own lunch when I saved you from becoming someone else's." She told Volney. "Now, tell me. Have you ever had the pleasure of trying a truffle before?"Whoan Ace and her truffles, I swear... xD

Volney took a moment to answer. He hopped a bit to flutter and land on the goat's horns with a muttered thanks. He glanced around, nervous the cat would try a second time. Swiveling his head this way and that and seeing nothing, he relaxed a little.
"A truffle? Ah no. I have not. I normally only dine on insects and nectar due to my birdlike...ah...qualities," he chortled, "A truffle is a sort of fungus is it not Miss Ace?" He flicked his wings to keep his balance as the goat moved. His long flower filled tail hung loose over Ace's shoulder as he settled into place. He was to meet new soquili! What a turn of luck.

Ace did her best to keep her head while the bird got his bearings on her horns, but once he was settled, she took off at her usual gait, a steady walk with a slight bounce of her shoulders whenever the ground was uneven. Luckily, at this time, it was a smooth walk.
"No Miss, thanks." She told the bird. "Just Ace, and yeah. A truffle is a sort of a mushroom. It grows under the dirt though, so it's harder to find and has a better taste. Me and mine rather like it. Not surprised birds don't."
She went on, having promptly decided that she didn't want to re-do the experience she'd had with Kinak and Nash, who decidedly (and somewhat rudely, she thought) proclaimed that they did not and would not ever like a truffle. Snobs.
"We'll just see how it is when winter comes around and truffles are the only thing that don't go bad and they're starving. Yeah, we'll see then..." She muttered and then flicked her ears at the bird.
"So tell me a little about yourself, Vols." She told him. "Where do you come from? What's your story? What do you want to do?"
