Since joining the Negaverse, Tourmaline had always been an exemplary soldier. As a Lieutenant she had always done as was expected of her, training and learning and earning her rank of Captain after the Order attack on their castle-- The day Laurelite had ascended as Queen.

After that Tourmaline had done her best to keep her standards up. She bullied sailor scouts and patrolled with Aluminite. She trained with her General and spent time partnered with Sailor Dia. Everything had been going so well and then something had happened. Something had changed.

Captain Tourmaline's weekly check-ins became bi-weekly and then they stopped coming in completely, roughly around the time that James Chaney had been reported missing by his girlfriend... Ex-girlfriend.

The Captain now found herself wandering the Negaspace with half a mind to call someone else to join her. The halls were dark and lonely; not at all like they had been when last she'd been here. How long ago had it been since the spar with her General? How long...?

There always seemed to be a surplus of energy signatures pulsing through Negaspace. Sometimes it was not easy to tell who was wear until they were right upon you--which was the case for Axinite, tonight. He was fumbling with a piece of technology; it looked to be some strange, holographic tablet, only the screen was completely distorted and he was tapping the holographic screen impatiently.

He rounded the corner and had to come to an immediate stop to avoid running into Tourmaline. He blinked at her, as if surprised to see her here.

"Captain," he greeted. It took a second before he identified her. "Tourmaline. You're out awfully late."

His eyes scanned the hallway quickly, looking for some motivation for her to be here, before he returned his gaze to hers. "I haven't seen you around much, these days. Are our schedules just not overlapping anymore because of these new hours?"

He asked in a tone that said he would have humored her if that was the lie she wanted to give him, but there was at least some genuine concern in his voice. It was a gentle pry, to test the waters.

"General-King." Her tone was respectful, if not slightly startled as she looked up from her thoughts to the fiery haired man now occupying the same hallway as her. He knew her name but she could not recall his in the sudden haze that had crept over her mind. Laurelite is Queen, Lepidolite is large, not Hess--

"Axinite." Her lips quirked into the slightest smile, pleased that she had recalled his name. The expression lasted briefly, slipping back into a thinly pressed, somber line. I haven't seen you around much...

"Late for some is early for others, Sir." The young woman's shoulders rose in a shrug and for a moment she seemed as though she might play the part of an errant teen, determined and defiant. Contrary.Lieutenant Uvarovite's face came to mind, wrinkled nose and partial scowl. Lower in rank, but older in age and experience, she had learned to listen and knew that he was right.

"My apologies, General-King," as she spoke this time she straightened herself out, standing tall and proud like she had been instructed to do from the start. Tourmaline was proud. She served the Negaverse with love and loyalty to those she had climbed the ranks with; fierce, wild and passionate, it marked her as an asset as well as a potential threat should she go rogue.

Had she? That was the question, really, wasn't it? You haven't checked in. What have you been up to, Captain?

"I lost someone and I was..." Hunting. "Grieving. I did not handle the situation in a manner that was conducive to staying on top of my duties. It won't happen again."

Axinite watched her closely, perhaps waiting to see if she would give him reason not to trust her or in an attempt to see if she sought reprimand. When she did neither—when she apologized, he simply smiled. “I understand,” he said simply, in a tone that implied he did understand.

He had been in the Negaverse for long enough to know what it was like to lose people.

“I am sorry for your loss. Would you like to walk with me?” he asked, gesturing to the empty space next to her. “Seeing your face has reminded me that there was something I wanted to talk to you about, if you have time? I don’t mean to disrupt your grieving. If you wish to be alone, I could make this quick, instead?”

"No," she said quickly, a bit too quickly, perhaps. Tourmaline calmed herself once more, tapping into the training that involved professional decorum before responding again.

"That is... No, you aren't disrupting anything, Sir. I've spent more than enough time grieving and not nearly enough time acting, lately. My time is yours." In a place without night or day it was easy enough to pretend that time passed differently anyways. As Katrina she had slept late into the afternoon, so she was hardly tired and it would be incredibly rude to turn down a General King's request-- Especially a polite one such as this.

"I hope Destiny City has been treating you kindly?" In truth she cared little, but the words sounded pretty enough coming from her lips; polite small talk from a young Captain to a commanding officer.

Axinite smiled when she accepted, and again when she asked how Destiny City was treating him. It might have been small talk, but he seemed appreciative all the same. “Well enough. I think I’m starting to get used to things a bit, I think. Thank you.”

He walked slowly, one step at a time. He didn’t seem to have any particular destination for the time being, but it seemed important to him to keep moving.

“I was wondering, though. If you’ll allow me to pry? You say you haven’t spent enough time acting. Are you, perhaps, limited by your rank? You’ve been a Captain for a while, now. You’ve collected a bit of a record. I was going over it earlier this week—you’ve got a few projects going on? I’m impressed, to say the least. I wondered, if you felt you were ready for a promotion? Or if you still feel there are weaknesses you need to work out?”

Tourmaline wasn't used to slow. Slow was something for other people; people who had nowhere to be and nothing more interesting to do which, honestly, was rather fitting for now. If anything it meant that she had time to ponder her answers to the General King's questions before they fell from her mouth.

"My limitations are, were, of a personal nature. I was allowing certain things to distract me." Captain Tourmaline was young and spirited and some would assume that her adventurous nature meant that she was flighty and unable to focus. Those thoughts weren't entirely untrue when she didn't have something to focus on, but with her distractions out of the way?

... weaknesses you need to work out? She focused in on the tail end of his next question, lips pursed together at the thought of what could be perceived as her 'weaknesses'. Tourmaline shook her head. "No, Sir. Any weaknesses that were also distractions have been eliminated. The rest-- I would consider them less a 'weakness' and more motivation to push myself forward. The stronger I am the better I can follow through with my duties, the better I can protect those who serve with me." She could keep her new 'family' safe.

"I was promoted the day Queen Laurelite was crowned. It seems like forever ago."

Axinite nodded and seemed as thoughtful as ever. He seemed like he was a quiet sort—or, at least, he would have been if he wasn’t pushing himself. He was more comfortable in his office, planning. It hadn’t always been like that, but connections were hard. Not because he couldn’t talk, but every new conversation, every new friend was opening the door to weakness.

A strong team made you a stronger person.

Axinite had lost his team, and no matter what he was doing in the Information branch it didn’t seem to be enough to fill that void.

“The stronger you get, the better you can follow through with your duties,” he agreed, but seemed to be more attached to the latter part of her observation. “And the better you can protect those who served you.”

For a short moment he considered the phrase again and then finally nodded. “Right, then. Well, I suppose General Tourmaline would be better for that purpose than Captain. Your records show a lot of promise, you know. I wanted to talk to you about what you’ve got on file. I notice you still haven’t chosen a branch and—well, to be frank,” he turned to face her. “I think you’d be a fine candidate for the Information branch. You’re smart, you’re likable, you’re outgoing. I think you’re a very clever woman and I’d like to see how far you can go—and more than just you, I’d like to see how far you can push those around you, too. I think you’d thrive in Information—or, really, any branch you’d like, but I was specifically looking for more Generals to help me out with a few things. Considering you’re ready for promotion—that I’d like to do tonight, if you consent, I thought I might offer you a position in my branch.”

"I--" Katrina Halloran was rarely at a loss for words, even less as Captain Tourmaline. It had been some time since she'd received praise from a superior officer though. How had she forgotten how good it felt? It was so different being acknowledged like this than it was being complimented on a job well done at work. This wasn't brewing tea or packaging cupcakes. This was important.

"It would be my pleasure, Sir. Whatever I could do to be of service. I--" The young woman was practically vibrating, although she managed to reign it in enough to keep herself from grinning like an idiot. The last thing she wanted to do was make the General King regret his offer by making herself look like an over-excited youth. "Information is something that I can do, happily, Sir, and if you think that I am ready I gratefully accept. Yes, I'm ready. Tonight."

It was all the consent Axinite needed.

“We’ll do it now, then.”

He offered her a smile and reached to take her nearest hand. His grip was short lived; once he held her hand firmly in his own, he teleported her to his office without warning. There was clear purpose for why he had chosen to do it, though, aside from just the hallway being a bit uncouth for a promotion.

He moved behind his desk and opened a drawer to withdraw a stack of papers, carefully bound, with the word, ‘INFORMATION’ in bold letters on its cover. There was ample information on the Information branch available elsewhere, but this was a personally prepared packet for all new agents joining him. He was perpetually overprepared and he wanted the officers in his branch to be the same.

But a packet of information wasn’t all he had laid out; on his desk he had a plate half full of sugary treats, some store bought and wrapped, and some clearly homemade. The other half of the plate was full of fresh fruits. From behind his desk, there was the sound of ice shifting; he withdrew two chilled sports drinks, each a different color, and set them on the desk.

If he hadn’t prepared for her tonight, it was clear that he was prepared in general. He moved back from behind his desk and made sure to gesture to the chair next to her.

“These upgrades can be draining,” he explained. “I apologize in advance for any discomfort I’ll cause you. A necessity, to prepare you for the power, but I will do my best to make it easy on you. I strongly urge you to take a moment to rest afterwards, and help yourself to anything you need.”

He nodded to the supplies on his desk. “I have seen new Generals push themselves too hard too quickly. You’ll be safe in my hands.”

And while she recovered, she could look over the packet, and then he’d return her to whatever duties she wanted to tend to for the evening. He offered her a moment for questions, or to prepare herself, and then asked, “Are you ready?”

Each introduction to power in her life as an agent of the Negaverse had been an experience, to say the very least. There was the motorcycle race the night General Labyrinthite had awakened her, introducing her to the embrace of Chaos. The day she had been promoted from Lieutenant to Captain had been the day Queen Laurelite had sent them all on a quest... And tonight? Tonight?

She would remember this; every detail, from the sweet aroma of the sliced watermelon on the tray of fruit to the way water beaded up and condensed on the bottles General King Axinite had set down on the corner of the desk. There was a massive packet of papers as well, but she would choose to ignore that. With great power comes great responsi--- yeah, yeah, yeah.

He was kind in the way he spoke to her, caring in ways she wasn't quite used to. She took it all in with reassurance, confident that she was making the right choice by putting herself in his hands and pledging her services to the Information Branch.

"Yes, sir. I'm ready."

Axinite nodded; it was only after she indicated that she was ready—and he took a few seconds to make sure she was ready, that he planted his hand on her chest. “This will only be a moment,” he assured, in the same soothing voice.

It didn’t matter how carefully he slid his hand into her chest, or how gently he held her starseed; there was no shielding anyone from the pain that came with any promotion. But, he had done this many times before, and he was as close to perfect as he could expect to be. He channeled the magic into her efficiently—quickly—but with the same discomfort as any surge of Chaos.

It took only a few seconds, but he could only imagine how long it might have felt.

He retracted his hand as soon as he was finished, keeping one hovering a few inches from Tourmaline, ready to catch her if she should fall or guide her into the chair to rest for a moment.

“And, that’s it,” he promised, “No more pain.”

His eyes met her, and he added, “General.”

Tourmaline swayed on her feet as the General King withdrew his touch, but true to the strength of her character she did not fall. She took a moment to gather herself, drawing in a breath and slowly expelling it from her lungs in an attempt to process everything that had just happened. She felt... She felt...

Stronger. The surge of power was enough to almost give her a second wind, a Chaos high, so to speak. She knew better than to rush off and do anything foolish, however. It wouldn't be wise to make a run for anything now-- why waste snacks and a chance to nibble while reading over paperwork?

Because paperwork is dull.

She scoffed at herself, brushing the action off as another puff of air past her lips as she finally opened her eyes. Bright and wide as they met his, she smiled. "Thank you, General King Axinite. I promise I won't disappoint."
