The shadows were growing long. The world was stained with fire, the last, fleeting battle cry of daylight against the encroaching night. It was said that there were some ruins somewhere nearby. That might be a good enough place to settle. Especially if no one was nearby, or the neighborhood was bad. Her mate would get into too much trouble otherwise.
Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing sighed, puffing out a cloud of smoke. How long was this state of affairs going to persist? The travel, the boredom, despite new experiences, the keeping of Alucard out of trouble, and the fact that the lady knight was increasingly adapted to a nocturnal life? This new land seemed too quiet for them. And, as much as she knew she shouldn't...Sir Integra missed it. The nights they had spent hunting freaks. She, prepared to command their forces; he, prepared to eliminate all freaks, at whatever pace pleased him, never using full strength, unless it was deemed strictly necessary. Alucard hadn't availed himself of that power since they came to this world. Not that Sir Integra knew of. Would Alucard tell her? Nonsense. She was his master.
But a little voice inside, the voice of a terrified teenager about to die whispered, But why should the Lord of All Vampires listen to a mortal like her? Was he doing this because of a spell? Or was it mockery? Or true devotion? And if he didn't truly respect and value her, when would he turn on her?
It was better not to think of such things.
The two of them needed to stay busy. Were there...undead...in this world? She hadn't heard of any, but what she'd seen of this world, it was a strange one, a world of magical horses, dragons, kings, gods, knights, faeries, genies, and merfolk. Undead would make sense in this world. Were the undead even a problem in this world? Did this world need something like the Hellsing Organization?
She hated herself inside for wishfully thinking of such evil, but....
It might be the best thing for Sir Integra and Alucard if there were freaks to hunt, a war to wage, and a cause to die for, even if it was only the lady knight's cause, and Alucard only stayed with her for amusement, or duty.
