Here are some basic questions to start you off with- this thread may be updated periodically with big questions that many might find useful.

Question: What does HP/MP stand for?
Answer: HP stands for "Hit Points" - HP lets you know how many more hits your Nightmare/Daydream can take before they're too exhausted to keep battling. Reaching 0 HP does not mean your Nightmare/Daydream has died. They don't even have to faint! It just means they've given up fighting for whatever reason. MP stands for "Magic Pool" - this indicates how much Magic your Nightmare/Daydream can use. Reaching 0 means that your Nightmare/Daydream can no longer cast any spells and must rest to regain their MP.

Question: Do I have to use this in my normal RPs when my Nightmare/Daydream is using spells?
Answer: No, the Battle System is just for Battle RPs. You're welcome to use the Success/Effect die roll to enhance your RPs if you'd like though!

Question: Why do I have to choose one race's stats for my Hybrid?
Answer: Because there are so many races in Nightmare Academy it would be impossible to give stats to every option. To make things easier on everyone, we decided that all Hybrids have to use a single race's stats. We know there are some mega Hybrids out there with 5+ races- but that's just all the more reason to use a simple system.

Question: I want my Nightmare/Daydream to learn a restricted spell, how do I do that?
Answer: You must contact nepsah or Yushika to learn restricted spells! Since nepsah designed the Battle System with Cerl Temius's assistance, its better to contact him. You'll work with one of the owners on how to determine whether or not its believable that your character would learn the spell, why you want them to learn it, and how they'd learn it.

        Question: Explain Buffs/Debuffs please?
Answer: So every Nightmare/Daydream must roll a 50 on their Success Rating to succeed at casting a spell. This is without any Buffs or Debuffs. Now, sometimes due to racial aptitudes or because they've studied, a Nightmare/Daydream may have a Buff they can apply to that roll. a -10 Buff means that instead of rolling 50, they'd only have to roll a 40. Likewise, if they have any Debuffs, they would have to roll a higher number to succeed. A +10 Debuff would require a 60 or higher for a successful roll. Buffs/Debuffs just make things easier or harder for your Nightmare/Daydream to do.

Yes, all spells that your NMs/DDs learn are entirely your choice.

In the infected meta, full kirin and full grimm were able to transform. would a student who participated in that be allowed to know the transformation spell? Or do they have to officially go through the class?

EG: Kingston the Grimm went Warg for the meta. Does Kingston know the spell?

(I think I was the only person who transformed in that meta)

Kirin/Grimm who participated in the Corrupt META that opted to transform (as in: they actually DID it) can automatically have the spell since its already canon that they know how to. ; D From this point on, all other pure Grimm/Kirin that want to learn how to use the spell must take a course to do so!

I've got a question regarding buffs and debuffs.

I'm going to pick on Grimm so bear with me for this.

Grimm have a -10 buff for Herbal magics. Say I wanted my grimm to know Floralkinesis. It's an herbal skill.

Grimm also have a +5 debuff for casting, and floralkinesis is a casting method. Would that spell then have a -5 buff total? (-10 for natural aptitude, +5 for natural ineptitude = -5 overall?) So to use that spell they'd have to roll at least a 45?

And then another question from me~

Does Transform take up a spell slot, even though it's a race specific skill? I thought I read that it didn't but maybe I'm making it up because I can't find anything like that.

Are Senior- career nightmares Academy graduated or University graduated?
PostPosted: Sat May 13, 2017 11:14 pm

Lural

Alrighty for buffs/debuffs-- yes, in that scenario Florakinesis would only have a buff of -5 due to the racial buffs/debuffs that a Grimm has. You'd have to roll a 45 or higher in order to cast the spell. ; )

As for the second question--- yes, it does take up a spell slot however there is no limit to the amount of spells a character can learn. If your character participated in the Corruption META they can automatically start with the spell in addition to their starting spell amount bringing their total up to 6 spells (since seniors start with 5).

Senior-Career NMs/DDs are University graduates (Community college counts). Students who have only graduated the Academy and have not opted to go on to higher learning can never reach the Career status - Career status seniors are specialists. ; D

Coming in swinging with a couple questions!

One (and the most important one)—how does physical combat play into the system, especially for those characters that are without magical ability? Does it follow the standard success rating for spells in order to hit (50+) with the second die being damage? If not, do you have any plans to implement an alternative system?

Two—is the flavour text negotiable for spells? Say a spell does not exist within the spell book currently. Could one take a spell with the appropriate mechanic effect and apply a different in character result (within reason)? E.g. Using a water based spell for oil instead.

On that note, can players make suggestions for spells within a certain field? For instance, I had wanted one character to inscribe "trap runes" in locations that would activate with varying effects whenever something approached/made contact with them.

excellent questions!

Currently there is no physical mechanic-- an oversight on my part whoops. I need to assess some things before implementing it - so it may be the same after all or may use different dice. But! For now, those who are infertile will need to wait for items to become available for purchase that will allow them temporary ability to use magic. ; D Currently they are not in stock (I was waiting on lineart but I got it this morning~)

Yes, the flavor text is negotiable within reason- so manipulating water-like substances with a water spell is just fine! When in doubt, gimme a shout and we can work out the best spell for the scenario.

And yes ! It totally slipped my mind when I was getting everything set up but!! It was always intended that shopgoers would be able to submit brand new spells to the Spellbooks for everyone to be able to learn in the future. I will be getting that thread up later today.

Can we determine our nightmare's specialties and add the debuffs or w/e to the battle sheets, or is there something special that we need to do to have those?

also, can we use the battle rps for RP points if they have the correct word count?

To start off with, your NM/DD only has the buffs/debuffs from their racial aptitudes. You can participate in magic classes or do Self-Studies to gain additional buffs, though!

Your battles can count for RP points so long as they meet the word minimum. Self-Studies can also be used for RP points so long as they meet word count requirements as well.

how do the magic classes/self-studies affect the buffs? Like, I have Ares in the general magic class for may. does he get additional buffs for that? if so, which would he get it for?

can you get buffs for the magic archetypes?
