Zachary, as Themisto, followed the furball Ember towards home as far as he could before powering down and walking with her. All the while, he was concocting a story - Ember was outside in the cold, she approached him and was friendly, she seemed like a stray. He was struck by her googly feline eyes and her snugly mannerisms and just had to bring her home and at least "attempt to find if she had an owner".
That sounded pretty plausible.
On the way home, Zach also needed to pick up a few things from the nearby convenience store, so, with Ember's permission, he hid the cat in his sweatshirt. That way she could keep warm, hidden, and count pick out a decent dinner that Zach could cook for her. Picking up some gravy and meats (along with people-food like soda and chips so it didn't all look suspicious), Zach headed towards home.
His father greeted them at the door with Ember at Zach's feet. He seemed to buy the story for the most part, but with Ember's endearing social qualities, she became a welcome guest in the house. The father passed away to lay down with a book for the evening and Zach got to putting everything away to begin dinner. He was hungry!

Ember much enjoyed rides so she was not at all unhappy about riding in his sweatshirt and poked her head out of the neck hole. The convenience store was not somewhere she got to go inside so there were plenty of good sights and smells to savor. The fish department was particularly appealing, making her little mouth water with all the fresh seafood within gobbling distance. She whined a little as they passed, letting him shop for whatever he wanted.
Ember curled around his father's legs and batted her big hazel eyes up to him. She did her best to be charming, which was rather a lot, and when he accepted her presence she let out a happy purr. A warm bed sounded nice for a change from the treetops. She followed her rescuer into the kitchen and laid down immediately on the floor out of the way.
Already she was very pleased with things.
"That seemed rather easy." She looked pleased, rolling over. She batted lazily at the air before she continued. "Perhaps your family would enjoy having a pet."

ZaiaFantasy i made so many mistakes on my phone, I'm so sorry if it was confusing! Benjamin, Zach's father, seemed to have taken to Ember quite quickly. Her googly hazel eyes and friendly demeanor did much to endear her to the older man. Zach explained that he'd found Ember out on the street and she seemed open to human contact (obviously) and being as charming as she was, he couldn't just leave her! Benjamin seemed satisfied with that story for the time being... or he was just being amicable because he was so tired. He didn't even ask about a litter box before trotting off to bed. When his father was safely out of earshot, Zach went to the sink to de-shell some shrimp for his feline companion. "I dunno, Ember. You're not really a... pet..." The word seemed offensive and distasteful. Ember wasn't just some house cat! She was incredibly intelligent and magical to boot, but his father would think his son was crazy if he mentioned such a thing. Hey dad, this is Ember. She's a magical, talking cat. Is it cool if she stays here? That wouldn't go over well. "I gotta do a quick load of laundry for tomorrow so... you can sleep in something warm for a change. Fresh from the dryer." He bent over to set a small dish full of peeled shrimp and raw fish on the floor for the guardian cat. Would she prefer a table instead? Zach was so new to this whole taking care of an animal that was probably smarter than you thing. He sighed an pulled the sweater he was wearing over his head. He was beat and sweaty from all that training. "Should I get a glass or a dish or something? You must be thirsty..."

"Oh, I don't mind being pampered like a pet."
In fact, she preferred it. Being confined, however, was not high on her list of things she enjoyed. Having somewhere to sleep that was warm and soft was all well and good so long as she had her freedom through the day. She sniffed after the shrimp he was working on, her mouth watering a little bit at it. She had a fondness for seafood and apparently that was all too apparent. He seemed to have her number dialed already, but that was fine by her. She had already claimed Zach as one of her humans and would not be able to give him up very easily.
"And, anyway, it's not like I'm going to start talking to the rest of your family."
Boy did he know the way to her heart! Nesting on a pile of freshly dried laundry sounded a little bit like heaven. She purred where she lay, the sound echoing though the kitchen while he worked. She may not have been a house pet but she enjoyed the comforts of one. Being waited on, for example, suited her well.
"Water, yes, that sounds very nice."

Maybe this wouldn't be so bad after all. With Ember happily munching away on the seafood, Zach padded down the hall to start some laundry and take a shower. "My room's at the end of the hall, to the left. It's uh... a lil messy so uh... don't mind too much, okay?" With the washer and dryer on the opposite side of the hallway, it made laundry so easy. Such little distance to travel! A load started in the dryer gave him enough time to scrub himself down in the shower. There was quite a lot of sweat and dirt to remove, but once finished, Zach stretched and put some old sweatpants on. Being clean suddenly made him so tried, but he had laundry to gather and a guardian cat to make a warm nest for. This load consisted of some of Zach's polo shirts meant for work and several fuzzy sweatshirts. While he removed the polo shirts, he kept the warm sweatshirts in the circular laundry basket, just for Ember. Entering his room, which was the typical-teenage-boy level of cleanliness, he plopped the basket down on the floor near his desk. "I hope this is okay?" he asked when the guardian came into the room. "If I need to get you an extra blanket or a pillow... I dunno how well that coat keeps you warm."

Ember finished up her shrimp in short order, nodding at his instructions. She went into his bedroom, which was unfortunate for cleanliness, and jumped lightly up onto his bed. She made herself to home on his pillow while he tended to the laundry, her tail moving ever so slightly back and forth. She watched him with lazy eyes, yawning as she drowsed. It had been a while since her last nap and she was ready to go to bed.
She was half asleep when he came in with the basket, watching with wide, eager eyes as he set it down.
Immediately she jumped down and turned around in the basket, tramping down the sweatshirts to make a proper nest for her little body. She would probably end up on his chest at some point during the night so the offer of blankets was politely declined with a little shake of her head. Instead, she curled up in the clothing and felt the dryer's heat radiating through her body. She curled her tail around her body and laid her head on her paws.
"This is nice."

ZaiaFantasy We can probably wrap soon if you want to/think it's good! "Oh yeah, I forgot the dish of water. One sec..." Zach disappeared into the kitchen, head foggy with exhaustion. It was a very long day but luckily for him, he didn't have to work until later in the day. That meant a few extra hours of sleep. Since the Calloways didn't have pets, there were no pet-specific bowls, deep dishes made for water and food. A regular, shallow cereal bowl would have to do. Zach returned to his room and placed the bowl on his desk so he wouldn't kick it during his morning grogginess. He fell back into his bed then, almost sinking into the mattress. "Man, if someone told me I'd be rooming with a talking cat... they'd lock me up in the mental hospital." He chuckled and turned off the light on his tiny bedside table. "But then again, if they told me I'd have magical powers, I'd have them all locked up... this whole war thing is bonkers, Ember..."

Ember was drowsing in her basket, letting him go about his own business while it cooled beneath her little body. She looked up when he fell into bed, listening to him as he spoke and jumping up lightly to his mattress. She knew well enough how hard things were.
"It's not fair what's been asked of you but as long as you're willing to do what needs to be done you're doing well."
She walked up onto his chest and settled down again, purring loudly in the darkness. For some reason, she found, purring kitties tended to make people happier. Besides, it was a little bit like a water bed as she rose and fell with his breathing. She turned around and settled where she was.
"Try to rest."

Zach wasn't prepared for soft warmth on his chest. For whatever reason, a warm cat purring on or near someone tended to make them sleepy. It must have been feline magic or something - an ability all cats possessed. The boy felt his eyes grow weary and heavy with sleep. Placing a hand on Ember, Zach didn't know when he fell asleep, but sleep came swift and hard. "...nnngnight Ember..." he mumbled, and was out like a light.
