He wasn't entirely sure where to find Samuel, but Gale went looking anyway.

Currently he was wandering around the Death Division offices, hoping not to run into a certain Lead and instead peering curiously around into the surrounding rooms for a sign of a certain tattooed person.

Instead, what Gale got was an empty office, and Mark napping, a sticky note stuck to his hat that read "Took the pile to my office - S"

Gale squinted at the note, carefully left it where it was, and then tried to find Samuel's office, hastily scooting away from the sleeping Mark.

He was redirected to the right one - he thought - Gale peering around the door as he carefully knocked.

"Samuel..?"

The door cracked open to reveal Sam nearly dropping a folder of papers. "Jesus Christ - oh it's you Gale. I thought this was over the Commodore thing, it's okay I understand it about as much as you do." He casually leaned against a desk that could easily compete with Gale for size. "So you going to ask me out, or am I going to have to do it myself?"

Gale's expression narrowed slightly.

"What Commodore thing?" he repeated, and then rolled his eyes. "I'm not here to - I just wanted to talk, is all, if you've got a moment to speak with me."

"It's so stupid," Samuel sighed, "Mark wants five hundred bucks for that pile of crap and I gave him fifty so you do the math." He did crack a smile though at Gale's eye rolling. "Good because I've only got so many jokes I can carry around, and none of them were date quality worthy."

He placed his folders back on the desk, casually crossing his arms. "Sure let's talk, I had three guesses to what this talk might be about, but it is probably customary in most countries to let the guest speak first."

Gale leaned against the doorway, looking a mixture of confused and exasperated all at the same time. "Why is Mark selli - okay, never mind, I don't think that there's any logic behind anything anymore."

He fidgeted with Jinhai's ring, the cool metal a familiar sensation against his skin. "I...I'm not sure what your three guesses are, but I wanted to ask about what happened in the Arctic."

A pause.

"And also about Carl. And everything else, really."

He gave Gale a sidelong glance and then finally disengaged his arm crossing, standing up. "Wait, I have a folding chair somewhere," he passed Gale the chair, "have a seat, I have a feeling we'll be here for a while." Samuel began to look in his modest desk drawers before pulling out a box of butter cookies. "Here, someone gave me these, help yourself. "

He waited for Gale to at least take a few cookies before thinking deeply, and then frowning. "So have you ever wondered why they have such an endless supply of well, people? It's because Creation creates, it uses human memory and to some degree their imagination to create things it otherwise wouldn't have bothered to do. To be honest, I think it was supposed to be one of the benign legacies, but since it has absorbed our memories, it desires what we want. Greed, anger, wrath, hatred, all those emotions that it otherwise did not even know of, it emulates." Sam waited patiently for Gale to absorb that information. "Now, the Carl thing, you're going to have to ask Rep about that because that is not something I'd like to touch any time soon."

He accepted the chair, because it was better than standing, Gale fiddling with it for a moment before finally taking a seat, because he couldn't figure out how to open the stupid thing. The cookies were given a vaguely suspicious look out of habit, because Gale had learned to accept nothing from Mark and Caelius both - but he reached out and took a butter cookie anyway.

There was a slight frown on his face as he took a bite, Gale's brows drawing together.

"So Creation - Creation was what was in those pods?" he asked, thinking of the vines. He stuck the information about Carl and Rep away for later, since it seemed a fruitless effort to ask Samuel about those. "Is that what makes it stronger - Creation, I mean? Eating our memories..."

He trailed off, thinking, the cookie half eaten.

"Is that what's been all over the island?"

Samuel took a cookie too, selecting one of the less sugar-covered ones. "Sure I mean if you consider all legacies as just that. The concept of legacy is that it was created from memories. They are all indirectly created from humans, just like how Fear, or even Insanity is a byproduct. Excalibur was once a sword, Creation once was a grail, and even those who had names before they became legacies are now more just the accumulation of memories of."

He was gesturing vaguely with his hands as he spoke, and spent a moment just brushing his hair back. "And yes, Creation's been on the island, but so has Destruction, and it was long ago protected by Excalibur, as you probably know, and well, you can ask Mark about the Grief thing. Long story short, there isn't much this island is actually safe from."

At last, Samuel gave Gale a sidelong look. "So, I'm going to guess you're not just just here to listen to me give you a lecture on legacies 101."

Gale digested this information with a certain amount of mingled surprise and curiosity, though he supposed he shouldn't have been too surprised. It made sense, after all, given the legacies' history, and their value. Everyone had heard of the Holy Grail, or Excalibur, but just not quite in the way that they were now.

His expression tightened, Gale frowning. "When was Destruction on the island? Destruction is..." He tried to remember. "...red, right? Is Destruction the red-eye virus, the one that took over?"

It would make sense, even if Gale's thoughts felt scattered. The look Samuel gave him wasn't missed. He leaned back in his chair, lips pressing together and was silent for a moment, just watching the other man, cookie only half eaten and still held in one of his hands.

At last, Gale said, "Your tattoo. You're part of Ouroboros?"

There was more, but he would start with that, at least.

Sam furrowed his eyebrows even deeper. "One second, let me get something for you." He opened and closed a few drawers, and then checked two bookshelves to the side of him before finally checking the desk again. "Oh, it was right here, of course it was. Here's everything I've compiled about the legacies." It was a relatively thick binder all typed out and then printed, and had a few reference images too. "If you have anything of interest I haven't written in, feel free to contribute, this is an open resource."

The second question required about two more butter cookies before he was willing to speak up about it. "Theoretically, I still am part of that, but you're no stranger to their initiations too. I defected, and I chose to defect. Another division may have been more relaxing, but I owe my life to this division." He sounded absolutely serious.

ALL OOC KNOWLEDGE YOU KNOW on legacies at the moment is what Sam has compiled in his book ie: What each colour is, their brief attributes, and vague detailing of the ones that visited the island. The binder does NOT cover individual cases ie: Sherry's ring, etc.

Gale took the binder with a certain amount of wariness, his gaze flicking across the cover. He opened it up and flipped through a few pages, fingers skimming the neatly printed type, eyes flicking across the pictures as well, lips pressing together in thought, expression alert.

"Thank you," said Gale finally, because it was not just useful to him, but to everyone, really. He closed the book, fingers curling around the edge of the binder, and glanced over at Samuel, reaching over to get another cookie of his own.

"I'm not, no," he said, slightly dryly; Gale turned over the arm holding the cookie, a small, black O stamped unobtrusively on the inside of his wrist, just below a tattoo of an hourglass. "It wasn't exactly what I'd planned on getting, mind you, but, well..."

He took a bite of his cookie, wondering whether it was rude to ask, and then finally went for it anyway.

"I'm not intending to pry," said Gale carefully, "So if you don't want to tell me, I'd understand. But why did you defect?"

"But you are prying," Samuel said, and there was a fleck of defensiveness in this voice as the tensed, and then relaxed just slightly. "Sorry, I'm sure you're a good person and you mean well, that's just a little sore for me right now. So that - that other marking, Lucky told me you made some deal with an Ancient?"

He was frowning.

Gale held up a hand, leaning back minutely. "Sorry," he said. "I really wasn't. It wasn't..."

But he trailed off, lips pressing together. He couldn't quite get a read on Samuel; sometimes he thought - well, he wasn't sure what he thought, but he wasn't so bad. He'd saved Gale twice now, first from the pods, and then in the tower, with Caelius, sort of. And yet...

And yet.

Gale was frowning as well.

"Lucky told you about that?" he asked, brows drawing together. "No, I...we didn't set off to do anything of the sort."
