Sometimes Lovina really hated the grading system.
She could sit in class and pass notes to survive the boring lectures in english. She could text on her cleverly hidden phone through the stupid Jeopardy-style study sessions in her math class. She knew who to gossip with to get through chemistry and still have some idea of what she was supposed to do. Her history class, however, offered no such sanctions to her - her assigned seat was near a couple of meatheads, she wasn't allowed to have her phone on her and she almost invariably fell asleep toward the end of the period. And without a doctor's note, she couldn't eat in class to boost her energy levels.
Really, she blamed poor scheduling for her troubles in that class. If they placed Theatre or maybe PE before her lunch period, then she wouldn't be nodding off through class. Instead, they picked one of her worst subjects and sandwiched it between math, which wore her out, and lunch. And, somehow, they expected her to succeed when she definitely couldn't keep her eyes open thoruhg the lectures.
Now, so far into the semester, her grade sat teetering on the precipice of total failure. Maybe she could bring her grade up, her dad had encouraged, if she talked with her teacher and tried her hardest through the rest of the term. Lovi considered this a longshot, certainly; history seemed like one of those subjects that necessitated memorization, and Lovi had other plans for her memory space than dead kings or whatever happened with Russia's proletariat. What even was a proletariat, anyway? She couldn't remember where she picked up the word. It didn't matter, she told herself. She still had to face Mr. Cappello and find out how bad her grade looked. And then do something about it.
At last, Lovina crept up to the classroom door and executed a mousy knock. Without waiting for an answer, she tried the handle and chanced her teacher's name. "Mr. Cappello? I'm here about my grade."grymoire lmk if anything needs changing

Grading papers still had to be his least favorite part of being a teacher and since he'd made the switch from college to highschool classes it was becoming more of a chore. He had lamented some of his college student's abilities, or lack there of, when writing papers and now he knew where they got it from first hand. At least the students at Romano's were held to a higher standard so he was allowed to grade them on their atrocious use of grammar. Usually he wasn't bothered after classes were over for the day so the knock on his door was a bit surprising. He looked up and raised a brow when he noticed one of his students. "Ah, Ms. Lee." He tucked the papers he was grading away so she wouldn't be able to see them before motioning her to come over to his desk. "Your grade?" He raised a brow slightly. She wasn't his worst student but he id know the red-head spent most of his class nodding off and not paying attention. "What would you like to know about it?"

Lovina crept in when she heard her teacher's voice and shut the door behind her. She crossed over to the front row of desks where she chose one relatively close to the teacher and leaned against its surface. The Romano's uniform skirts often prevented her from fully siting on desks, and she disliked it. "I need to find out how bad it is. Like, I don't expect it to be like too awful? But your class is at a really bad time for me and I think you probably already know that." She sighed through her nose, exasperated.
"So I guess I really need to find out what it looks like. And if there's like anything I can do to bring it up. Like extra credit?" She winced. The words almost felt like an expletive when spoken in front of a teacher unprovoked. Romano's carried rigorous education requirements and Lovina was starting to experience their backlash after working hard all term. Not only did she feel cooped up and supremely annoyed at all the chores heaped on her, but she started to lose steam in the academic department, too. The term would come to a close in a couple months at best, however, and she needed to make an effort to rescue her failing grades before she got kicked out or was forced to repeat classes. Repeating classes would kill her social life.
And she definitely didn't want to repeat this class.
Plus, what would he say to her next term? Would he be all passive-aggressive about it if she passed his class by sleeping through it? Didn't teachers like to grade students harder for that? She didn't know. "And um…" She bit her lip. "Have you finished grading our last test?"grymoire i am so sorry i missed your last tag! feel free to poke me if it's been a couple weeks and i haven't tagged you back.

He listened to Ms. Lee speak and for a moment wondered how many students had come to him with the same questions. He suspected it was a lot given that history seemed to be something students either loved or loathed. "I would suggest endeavoring not to sleep though any more classes as a start. Bad time or not. Things wont' always happen when you want them to outside of the academic world either." Depending on where she wanted to go with her life she would eventually be stuck having to pay attention when she really didn't want to. "There is a participation element to your grade and you are severely lacking in that area." That was a nice way to put that she didn't have any grade there. "Not entirely but I did finish yours." He shifted through the papers he'd been looking out when she walked in and pulled out her test after a moment and held it out so she could take it. "Not your worst but this was not complicated information either." She had scored a C, a high score one, but the chapters had been easy.

Lovina sighed, shoulders slumping at the admonishment. She felt frustrated; on one hand, she felt like she was fighting her body to stay awake and that the school system was totally ignorant of that, and on the other, she kinda saw his point. It just didn't seem fair that the rest of the world wouldn't at least try to work with her over these things, but obviously Romano's saw no point in that. She was just a number here, and Lovina was starting to see the folly in her choice of institution. There wasn't much she could do about it now.
Lovi trawled her brain for some sort of a compromise, where she might be able to stay awake and participate as intended but she was coming up short for answers. Energy drinks came to mind, but she doubted she could chug one in ten minutes while power walking from her last class to this one, nor did she like the way they left her all jittery and hypervigilant. "Do you think maybe I could have a snack in your class? Like a granola bar or something? I could bring a doctor's note." She heard about hypoglycemia, and knew one student talked it up as the reason she could eat mandarin oranges in her last class. Lovi wasn't sure she could swing it for herself, but considered it worth a shot - especially if she could keep herself awake through history and actually work on her participation grade.
Who participates in history, anyway? Dead people, that's who. Why do we have to participate when we're not dead and we're not making history? Lovi sighed inwardly.
She shifted from the front desk to take up her paper and worried her lip at the results. A C was passing, she knew, but it wasn't a great reflection on her academic record. She actually wanted to go to college, even if her father wanted more of a home life for her. And how was she supposed to go to college if she couldn't pass a simple history course?
"And is there any way I could make up some of the grade? Like an extra credit project maybe?"

"If you think eating something would help you stay awake, and you can do it quietly without disturbing the rest of the class, then yes. But if it becomes a problem then that offer will end." He didn't really have a problem with students eating something if they needed it. Quiet a few had when he taught college to keep their energy up. It was technically healthier to eat when you needed something rather than having to wait between meals. "I might also suggest getting more regular sleep. You should be getting yourself plenty at night." He shouldn't technically be telling students anything about that given how often he was out late himself but he at least didnt' fall asleep during the school day. He had just learned the value of properly timed power naps. "As far as extra credit that isn't something I usually offer my students. But you are at least acknowledging your shortcomings which is more than most." He tapped his pen on the desk for a moment. "The essay you neglected to complete at the beginning of the semester. You can take two weeks to turn in a second, with a different topic, and I will change that grade to one of the new paper." That particular essay, since he always assigned it early in the term, was technically built in extra credit since he only counted it toward the final grade for students who needed it. Lovina had only turned in a draft though so she wouldn't be able to take advantage of that unless she re-did the paper.

"Yes!" Lovina sounded in breathless delight. Finally, she felt like she was getting somewhere with a problem she'd had since the start of the semester. Though, she probably should've said something about it earlier, but she reminded herself that she didn't know it was a problem until their most recent progress report. And even then, her dad kinda took it as a sign that she shouldn't be in school anyway. And that was a problem all on its own.
The sleep suggestion was, of course, something she took under advisement but often blatantly ignored. She loved to stay up late, to browse Etsy shops on her phone and dream up new outfits and shopping excursions to get her through to the weekend. Unfortunately, that reflected badly on her in classes like this, but she wasn't sure if her bad grades here justified changing up a much-needed routine. If she daydreamed on her phone before she did her homework, that might work… But then she might just wind up never getting her homework done or staying up 'til way too late in the night working on it.
One thing at a time, Lovi, she reminded herself.
Then Mr. Cappello offered a secondary solution to her grade, and Lovi felt relief all over again. "Okay, okay, I can do that. It just needs to be about the French Revolution, right? Okay, I can do this." She added the last part more to herself than to him, but she thrived off of the external validation.
"Oh my god, thank you so much for doing this! I promise you won't regret it. I'll get you the paper by the end of next week, and I'll stop falling asleep in class, and things'll be awesome." Lovina hopped off her desk perch with renewed energy. She very nearly bounced out of the classroom, free of the weight bearing down on her shoulders, and tossed her teacher an exuberant wave. "I better go get started on that essay! See you in class tomorrow!" In all her excitement, she slipped in on the handle of the door and very nearly slammed her face into the planar surface.

Kian managed, just barely, to not laugh at Lovina as she almost broke her nose on the door. He might not have been able to stop himself she actually had hit herself with the door though he woudl have had to make sure she was alright. "I will see you tomorrow Mrs. Lee" He shook his head as she flounced out and went back to grading papers. She wasn't a bad student, just not driven enough, so perhaps giving her a second chance would make a difference.
