Another morning with no results.

Chrysanthe pursed her lips thoughtfully as she headed through the marketplace. So far the girl had been combing through as many merchants as she could find, but none recognized the necklace that she kept around her neck. None of them knew of her father. He definitely was a sly one. Chryssa sighed in frustration as she twisted around the corner again. She had already looked through this market area a few days past, but who knew? The girl was constantly hopeful that surely something or someone would show up.

Someone would show up, but just not who she was expecting to see.

“Oh, look! A performer!” Whispers through the crowd caught the hybrid’s attention. Chrysanthe’s gaze followed after a small group of people who were rushing around the corner. Was a performer so enchanting that people had to see them? Though she did bit her bottom lip thoughtfully. She had heard of performers traveling across Sauti once, but her mother had forbidden her from going. So maybe a little detour from her search wouldn’t be too awful an idea.

Though she immediately regretted it the moment that she too turned the corner and saw an all too familiar Matori man, “Leukos?” The name slipped from her lips in surprise as she watched. What was he doing here and why?
PostPosted: Sat Mar 18, 2017 9:12 pm

After having all but a measly fraction of his money stolen from him as a result of a rather costly one-night-stand with a thief, Leukos had resigned himself to the fact that his “vacation” in Matori was going to have to last longer than he had planned. Even after performing here for a handful of days now, he had earned nowhere near enough to cover the cost of a return trip home. And to make matters worse, today marked the end of his pre-paid for time at the inn he was staying at. There was no way he’d be able to afford to stay in so nice a place and have money for necessities; he’d have to find somewhere else. But the options could only go steeply downhill from there, and Leukos was decidedly NOT looking forward to them.

But he didn’t let his melancholy sour the energy and positivity he put on display for the public, pushing the stress behind a practiced smile and bright eyes. So he took up shop in the space he had come to claim as his own in the market, decked out in the sparkling costume he had put together from what he had brought with him on the trip. Using a dented tin plate he had found discarded, he set about tapping out a little tune with the end of the rod he had fashioned a makeshift dancing-ribbon out of, letting the rhythm grow more lively and louder as he sashayed across his makeshift stage, engaging the passer-bys.

Eventually a few people stopped to watch. Then a couple more. Soon he had a nice little crowd, just what he needed. It didn’t make sense to pull out your trump card in front of an empty audience though, so he waited until more had been drawn in, adding a simple dance to the melody.

Crowds were a rather simple phenomenon to understand: if someone stopped to look at something for long enough, someone else would join them, even if they didn’t know what they were looking at. This instinct to follow the herd was an essential aspect of any performer’s livelihood.

Once satisfied with the size of the group he had acquired, Leukos tossed the metal plate aside, unfurling the fabric that had been twisted around his arm. The orange fabric shimmered as he twirled it through the air, hearing a few delighted gasps from some of the onlookers. He then set about enacting one of the many routines he’d used in the circus, modified slightly for the size of the area he was performing in. There was no music to accompany him here, relying on the tune he played in his head to stay on tempo as he danced, fouettés & pirouettes accompanying leaps as he pivoted, arching his foot over his head as he bent. The first time he tossed the rod out towards the crowd, only to yank it back into his hands, he couldn’t help the sincere smile that replaced his fabricated one. Because even though he was being forced to do this because he needed to, that didn’t detract from the fact that it made him happy.

And so the show continued, Leukos tossing the stick into the air and catching it as he tumbled, popping back up to snake the ribbon through the air around him, under him, over him, winking and grinning at the enraptured crowd that continued to grow. Someone had even started clapping along to the natural rhythm he was creating, and soon others joined in, creating their own music. But it could only go so long before both he and they grew tired, so with one final toss of the ribbon into the air, he flipped his way over to its intended destination, catching it with a flourish as he landed in the splits.

It seemed that Leukos truly was a performer. Chrysanthe could only raise a brow at the audacity of the other Matori. I suppose that's just his true element. She reasoned though the idea of even stepping forward to do any of the things that Leukos was doing made her own cheeks darken. She would never! But the question was why? Was there something in it for him? The hybrid pursed her lips in confusion. The last time she had seen him he had seemed well off - especially since they had gotten their coin back from that back alley thief. Unless...Chrysanthe rose a brow as a ridiculous thought crossed her mind. Surely Leukos had known better by now to keep his money bag closer. There was no way that another thief had actually gotten away with his belongings, right?

He does seem to really enjoy entertaining others. Impressed by the display Chrys simply crossed her arms before leaning back against a building. As she positioned herself the girl simply just watched both Leukos and the crowd. He definitely had attracted a variety of people. Including creepy as well it seems. A couple seemed a bit too interested for Chrysanthe's liking though the girl had to shake her head against the thought. It was not her problem. She was just taking a break and it happened to be that Leukos was performing on the same street corner was all. And she was just fitting in with the rest of the crowd when she clapped for him. Didn't want to seem like a complete a*****e. That would just draw attention to herself and the last thing she wanted was for anyone to notice her - especially Leukos. So Chrysanthe just kinda lingered in the shadows out of curiosity while he did his thing.

When it was over she would leave. That at least was what she told herself.
PostPosted: Thu May 18, 2017 7:39 pm

Following the obvious conclusion of his act, his assembled crowd offered their applause; some of it felt more obligatory than sincere, but pleasantly enough, a majority of those present actually seemed appreciative of the entertainment. They were a good crowd, more than usually coming forward to part with their coin. Leukos couldn’t help but genuinely smile when they did, getting up and thanking them as he wiped off his brow. Luck was funny like that, and it seemed that just the right batch of people had gathered together for this particular group. Picking up the bag they had deposited the funds in, he was more than pleased to feel the heft of it; of course he’d have to count it later, could just be a bunch of small coins, but it was a still satisfying to hold.

“That was quite the performance, young man; we’re impressed.”

Leukos turned his attention away from the bag, towards who had spoken. Most everyone had already filtered off by now, but it looked like three Matorian men had lingered. Their sense of fashion was… interesting… to say the least; they seemed a little gaudy, like they might be trying too hard to make their wealth apparent. But Leukos shouldn’t really judge, being dressed the way he was.

Buuuutt.

That didn’t stop him from sparing a momentary self-indulgent glance of disapproval, before that was swept away to be replaced with his usually sincere smile, “Thank you so much, I’m glad you enjoyed it.”

They exchanged a look with each other, with some kind of weight that's meaning was not apparent to outsiders, before their focus was back on Leukos. One of them spoke up, “Oh yes, it was a pleasure being able to watch you work. You have such control of your body, and so flexible too! It’s clear you’ve gone through much training to be in such prime condition."

One of his other companions chimed in as well, "And you’ve put yourself together so well; you clearly have good taste, the cut of your clothes compliment your figure and complexion quite nicely. I don’t think I’ve ever seen another of our kind with markings quite like yours...” The last nodded, eyes making a not very subtle scan down his sweaty body, humming appreciatively.

Then the first pulled a large, hefty looking coin out of his beaded wallet and dropped it down with the others in the bag Leukos held, grinning in a way that was evidently supposed to be taken as charming, “This hardly seems like enough for a boy of your caliber. You shouldn’t be performing on the streets; you look like you belong in a large room with the finest silks and a real musician accompanying the music you make with your body.”

“Mm.” It was hard keeping the grimace off his face as Leukos accepted the praise, and the rather unsavory gaze that came with it, “That’s all…very kind of you to say. I really don’t deserve this much praise, I'm flattered. Thank you for your generous donation as well, it’s much appreciated…” His tone was clearly inviting an end to the conversation, pulling the bag closer to himself and oh-so-inconspicuously drawing the clasp closed.

I suppose he didn't have to be a thief when he can easily make money like this. Quipped Chrysanthe to herself as the crowd surged around Leukos. Seemed like being an entertainer was profitable in the city as there were plenty of people with coin to spare. She could only huff at the thought. She would never dare to display herself like he did. But if it worked for him then it worked for him. And admittedly he did manage to get a few interesting tricks off here and there. I suppose having good lucks also helps with that. The golden hybrid shrugged her shoulders before turning on her heel. She had wasted enough time here already. She had a goal in Matori and watching some fool perform, admittedly a fool who was talented and alright on the eyes, was not in the agenda.

Tucking a stray curl behind a finned ear Chrysanthe shook her head. At least he seemed able to hold his own. She had to worry more about herself. Her time was limited as her funds were only so-so. There would only be another couple of weeks that she could spare to be in the city before having to move on. And even then she wondered if that would be enough time to find this mysterious father of hers. My luck watch him also be on the streets performing like this. She let out a soft chuckle before freezing as some conversation reached her ears.

"Seems like they've already moved in on him, mother."

"Shame since I was going to offer to pay for his entertainment at home, but I'm sure they have more than us. And I know those connections, I would rather just pick up another pretty boy for our amusement elsewhere."

Chrysanthe took a deep breath to calm herself. She was so not hearing these things. What type of creeps were out here in the city? Still the golden girl couldn't help glancing over to notice that some rather creepy looking guys, far too fancy for her tastes, were actually approaching Leukos. Not that it was her concern but she found her fists clenching as one leaned in too close to him for comfort. Don't you dare Leukos. You do...oh gods he did take the money. Chrysanthe bowed her head and pinched the bridge of her nose. Certainly she was a country girl with little city sense, but even she knew better than that!

He took the money so they were not about to leave him alone. Chrysanthe sighed as she continued watching. It was like some natural disaster where you wanted to flee, but at the same time see a small child near the edge of the typhoon and have to eventually rush into save them despite wanting to let nature's natural selection do its thing. Still, all she could do was stare for the time being as she debated her decision.

He thought that surely after the tone he had used, the guys would get the hint that their company was no longer desired or invited. But just as soon as he had closed his bag, the more talkative one of the three closed the distance between them, sidling up next to Leukos. Ugh, he smelled like strong perfume. And not the good kind either, the kind used to cover less desirable odors.

“Oh but you really do!” His tone was syrupy sweet, obviously intented for maximum flattery. “You should be showered in compliments and all the attention you deserve. A high class boy with such a high class act ought to have the very best, all the finest things.”

“My compatriots and I represent a very prestigious establishment, one that deals in only the most powerful and esteemed clients.” With that the quieter of the three slepped closer, and though it was not an overtly threatening move, he did effectively box in Leukos even further. He’d been so distracted by their ornamental gettup that he’d missed something important: this guy was almost as tall as himself, which really was quite the feat. It looked like there might be toned muscles under all the robes, he was not a slight man…

“And we’ve been looking for someone of quality such as yourself.” His grin was wide and white, interupted only by a gold tooth that glistened in the afternnon sun. “If you were to come with us, I can guarantee the richest men in Matori would pay handsomly to watch you perform, and you’d soon be swimming in more money than the glittering waters of our beloved coastline.”

A nervous prickle ran up Leukos’ spine, being all too familiar with the subtle predatory manerisms and look in their eyes. He swallowed and took a step back, trying to maintain a nonchalant air about him, “That…sounds like quite the offer. Thanks, but, I’ll have to decline. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavors, surely you’ll find someone else to take you up on tha―”

But then a jeweled hand was at the small of his back, halting his retreat. “No really, I must insist. The building is not that far; you could come and enjoy a delicious meal on the house, see for yourself how wonderful the place is. Our employer is very eager to meet with you…” Before Leukos could pull away from him, he felt the larger man’s touch at his elbow, making him flinch. “You really should at least consider it further; doesn’t a beautiful boy such as yourself deserve beautiful things?” The third man stepped in closer, making him feel truly trapped.

She was going to walk away any second now. At least that was what Chrys kept telling herself as she simply stared at the disturbing scene unfolding before her. Gods this was like watching some sort of train wreck. I mean he wanted the money so surely he'll be getting more of that now. She quipped silently to herself. He was a performer maybe he was accustomed to these things? To these 'special events' that allowed him to live in a life of luxury? And chains were kinky right? Didn't some people enjoy those thrills?

But he seemed so uncomfortable and his tone....well it made the golden hybrid take a few steps towards the men. It was frustrating really - she wanted to stay far, far away from these messes. At this rate she would be wasting more time on others than on finding the man who she was chasing. If he was even alive! Frustration knotted up Chrysanthe's stomach as she stared down the men surrounding Leukos. Dirty bastards. All of them were just drenched in a nasty stink that made the girl's lip curl. Couldn't they just take a no for an answer and leave it? Surely there were other pretty boys in the city that could be just as entertaining and far more willing.

And then they were touching Leukos more and a defensive glare crossed Chrysanthe's features. As much as she enjoyed watching the other earthling getting himself into stupid trouble this was just too much. It was dangerous and uncomfortable and despite her best intentions to just leave him to deal with it the girl was loading a bolt. A bolt that flew into the foot of the one touching Leu's elbow. Immediately a loud grunt left the man as the pain slowly started to set in and by then three more bolts had been fired around the group. Screw manners when you could just shoot people, right? And they wonder why I never go anywhere without some form of weapon. Rolling her gaze at the absurdity of this situation the hybrid marched up and reached out a hand towards Leukos.

Keeping the crossbow aimed high towards the men Chrysanthe's gaze darted towards her acquaintance from the other night, "Come on so we can get out of here." She hissed towards him before glancing back towards the trio of men, "Sorry boys, he belongs somewhere already and he's running late. Would be a shame to disappoint those waiting on a good show." A slow grin crawled up her face as she studied the bolts that were piercing through some feet and clothing and more importantly also into the ground, "And wouldn't want to be slowed down considering how easily big feet can get stuck on things. You'll just have to try again for the next show~"

Her gaze darted towards Leukos as she reached out to grab him and drag him away from the three. It would probably be best if they started running before the shock of actually having bolts fired at them wore off. The last thing she wanted was to have a fight in the middle of the streets. Running was going to be troublesome enough and it was best to get a good head start....
PostPosted: Mon Jun 05, 2017 7:10 pm

There was no way he was going to just let himself get dragged away to who knows where, but even with that thought on his mind, Leukos was having a hard time making himself move. Should he just try to punch one in the face or something, use the shock factor? But what if one of the men had a knife? Or if they called the authorities, since they’d be in the right if Leukos lashed out first, would he get the blame? A lot of nobles back in Oba had connections with the law, what if there were the same back-door understandings in Matori as well? He was a stranger here after all, who would they rather believe?

So caught up in trying to figure out how to peacefully get himself out of this mess, Leukos didn’t even notice the approach of the girl he’d met before, or the crossbow being fired until the bolt was already in the foot of one of the men. And then he was staring down at it just as dumbfounded as his assailants, caught completely unawares, when suddenly Chrysanthe was just there, yammering on about SOMETHING and tugging him away.

“Chrys, why are you…where did you…” It was all he could do to keep his feet under him properly, just surprised and relieved to be away from that situation, but lost in a sea of swirling thoughts as he tried to place all the pieces together. “You SHOT THEM. Like…you actually―shot―at them!”

At least where Leukos was hesitant Chrysanthe had opted to move. Though her 'shock' factor was a bit rash and rather violent the hybrid felt as if she had made a good move. And no one better tell her otherwise. The girl's golden gaze narrowed as she stared down the men threateningly. If they hadn't wanted to take a young girl seriously then that was their fault. It often worked best to just shoot now and ask questions later, right?

"Because I must be attracted to idiot." She quipped at the question as she pulled him along. While she would love to stare at the shock on the men's faces she knew it was only a temporary situation. In fact she was pulling Leukos after her and running faster than she had in a very long time. Even her sides were screaming by the tie she finally opted to slow down and let go of the Matori's hand, "Why yes I did." She retorted in between gasps for air, "You....saw....me....shoot....before...no surprise....this time." As she leaned back against the alley wall the girl shot him a look, "Not like they were up to any good anyways. What were you thinking? Men like that would have you bending over backwards for them in some private quarters, and not in a fun way either! More like makin' ya a slave again....you idiot." She snapped before reaching up to pinch the bridge of her nose in frustration.

Holy gods she had shot them. What in the world was she thinking? Would they be on the hunt now for her? Oh gods, oh gods, oh gods....not that she wanted to show Leukos how scared she was, but spirits her legs were shaking beneath her. I can't believe...I just did that.
PostPosted: Thu Aug 17, 2017 12:54 pm

Sprinting was usually an activity that Leukos could handle easily, blessed with long legs and a body trained to handle the rigors of exorcise. But there was only so much it could handle, and after having just finished a demanding performance, running as far and as quickly as they did left him winded. So he let the smaller girl drag him along, trusting in her ability to lead them to a new location safely. Which she did, taking the opportunity to catch her breath between chewing him out. Leukos propped his hands on his knees and took it, more invested in gathering air into his lungs than defending himself.

But at the mention of slavehood, his eyes darkened and he scowled, standing straight to his full height as he pushed loose hair out of his eyes, “Don’t even begin to lecture me on subjects like this, girl. I am more than familiar with what men like that are capable of.” He looked down the mouth of the alley they had entered with a dark intention, hands bunched into tight fists, “And I’d kill every last one of them before I let that happen again.” But it would seem they weren’t being directly pursued right at this moment, so he turned his attention back toward Chrysanthe.

When he registered her shaking legs and the look on her face however, his eyes lost their sharp edge, moving to lean on the wall next to her, “But I must thank you for giving me a swift escape from that situation.” He placed his bag and rod on the floor, casting her a smile as he stood again, “Though I may have chosen a more tactful approach myself~”

Chrysanthe was surprised by the sudden darkness that filled Leukos's expression, "Good." She replied quietly, her own gaze flickering with emotions. Even if she hadn't experienced slavery the stories had been enough for her. Honestly just the thought of it twisted her stomach. What had Leukos endured before this to make him react in such a way? Truly she hadn't thought of it, but he had lived in this area while she had been born in Sauti away from the cruelty of Oba, "At least we agree on that..." She admitted before turning her gaze away. Even if she regretted hurting him with her statement the girl was honest in that. She would rather shoot those men again than let Leukos be dragged away! Even if he did get on her nerves and was way too flirty for her interests....no one deserved that, no one.

As he seemingly calmed down Chrys simply nodded, "At least you acknowledge that I did that." She breathed before slipping down to sit on the ground for a moment, "We should just take a moment to hide here and then sneak out once the danger is over." She huffed at his 'tactful approach' line and just rolled her eyes, "Tactful or not it was effective and in the heat of the moment that's what matters the most so just roll with it. I helped you out because you're like some lost pup in the streets~ I didn't ask for criticism on how I did it though."
PostPosted: Fri Sep 01, 2017 2:52 pm

Alone in the alley with just the two of them, it struck Leukos how odd it was that this seemed to be the inevitable condition for him spending time with this strange golden-girl: running into alleyways after getting into a spot of trouble. They were making a habit of it, and that in itself was humorous enough to lighten his mood considerably, despite the serious repercussions Chrysanthe might have unintentionally stirred-up.

He chuckled lightly at the pickle they were in, sliding down the wall to sit a considerate distance away from her. “Don’t take offense, I didn’t mean to criticize you: I was simply pointing out that sometimes a bit of fore-thought can save you from a lot of headache in the future. Just…something to consider.” And whether or not things would ever cool down was up for debate: she’d attacked a group of men, in broad daylight, with witnesses to testify. Who knew if they’d try to press charges, if the authorities might be looking for them now? But they were no doubt part of an illegal business, so maybe they wanted to avoid attention? There were simply too many variables to consider, to wrap his head around. Waiting was the only thing they could do at the moment, so wait they would.

In truth, he was rather sore everywhere: he hadn’t been able to cool-down properly after that workout. Might as well take care of that now. So he stretched out his long legs in front of him, reaching to touch his toes in a variety of different positions, stretching out as many different muscles as he could while sitting.

Head between his parted legs, he addressed his question to the cobblestones beneath his nose, making sure to project so she’d hear him properly, “So, Chrysanthe…since we’re going to be spending a bit of time here together, might as well pass the time. I don’t believe you’ve ever mentioned what exactly brought you to the city?” At that he turned his cheek to look at the girl, quirking an eyebrow, “No offense…but it doesn’t exactly seem like you are familiar with the way things work in these kinds of large places.”

Chrysanthe pursed her lips in a pout as the man chuckled. Really he could laugh, even the slightest after all that? He had almost been kidnapped basically! A shiver went down her spine at the thought of what could have happened. She had heard stories, had kept to herself even to avoid such a thing considering her own unique appeal to those who collected interesting earthlings for...entertainment.

The hybrid glanced towards Leukos with a soft sigh, "I understand I suppose, but at the same time...ugh." Her gaze narrowed in frustration as she tried to sort through the tangle of feelings and thoughts she had when staring at the Matori, "Can't you have a bit of foresight? Why were you making money on the streets anyways? I thought you had plenty after catching that thief the other night." She blew a stray strand of hair from her face, "Not like it's really my business what you do yet here I am...again." In an alley with this guy...talk about great hanging out locations. Chrys rolled her gaze at the thought before finding her expression flickering downwards at the sudden question.

"Family business." She quipped, "Just trying to track down a merchant that my mother knew well several years back. Seems like he doesn't operate anymore in this area, but I figured I would try." Chrysanthe glanced back towards Leukos, "I may be a country girl, but I'm fine. I know better than to trust any stranger and I keep to myself while wandering about through all the shops in the area." She shifted on the ground and crossed her arms defensively, "Somehow though seems like you are more of a tourist yourself even though you're a pure Matori...unlike me. I'm guessing you weren't raised in Matori either though." He was right, if they were going to be here for a while then why not just talk? Even if it did ruffle her feathers a bit just as she was certain to ruffle his.
PostPosted: Sun Sep 10, 2017 7:13 pm

Leukos pursed his lips to keep any reaction her comments might have elicited to himself, drumming his fingers on the hard cobblestones. Certainly a defensive little thing, isn’t she? He scooted back to sit against the wall, legs crossed under him. Would certainly make conversation easier to be at eye level, since that seemed to be the agreed upon direction they were going.

“You are right, and I’m not ashamed to admit it: this is my first time in Matori. I’ve always lived in Oba, but after someone very special from my childhood reemerged in my life, I thought it would be best to finally visit the land of my people,” he said, before picking at a spot on his pants, flicking away a bit of dead vegetation that had clung there, then continuing. “But cities are not new to me. In fact, compared to the metropolises back home, the cities in Matori are rather quaint. Not that you can blame them: they haven’t exactly had the opportunity until recently to develop their own economy.”

He smiled at Chrysanthe, tipping his head apologetically. "So I'm afraid I'd be rather useless as well in locating this elusive merchant you are looking for. Do you at least know what he looks like?"

Chrysanthe just shot the man a look before sighing under her breath. Certainly wasn't the friendliest atmosphere between them - mostly her fault she knew, but she'd rather keep it that way. No point in getting friendly with some random person in a place that she didn't plan on staying in for long, right? Or something like that. The hybrid pressed against the wall and took comfort in the solid feel of it against her back. At least she knew that the wall was there for her, support piece and all.

"Ah." She found herself saying thoughtfully, "Must be nice." A slight flush decorated her cheeks before she glanced away, "I mean to be here for someone special." The only person she was here for deserved a special a** kicking and nothing more. To actually be here though to reunite with someone? It had its charm...for those who could dream and not be stuck in a bitter reality that Chrys felt she was in.

"I suppose so. Must be dull compared to Oba." She replied, "Gods only know how you would see Sauti then - probably far too quiet for your tastes unless you like bandits and traveling merchants and creatures that lurk in the fogs of the mountains there." Her lips pursed into a frown at his last question and for a second she stared at the opposing wall as if trying to draw any image, any idea of what the man would look like. Eventually, however, she just let out a soft sigh before shaking her head. It was silly of her to even be looking and just admitting that she didn't even know how he looked made the girl's ego even more bruised. I must look like a serious fool right now.
