                      Rise if you would.

A voice unknown to your knowledge would drip into your ears. As soon would the rain, letting you feel the cold sensation. It feels as though you are being pulled in and out of consciousness.

It seems your vision pool from the falling rain. Your hearing... deafened by the strips of lightning shattering from miles above. So high up and yet you're so far below. What happened?

                      . . .

Turning your head until it stops, the sensation of a scratch riddling your body until it chills into a numbing ache.

The smell around you is acrid, mostly masked by the rain. You can barely move. It feels as though you are wedged.

You look and your sight clears, what feels like armor and metal looks between a rocky outline with the cape of a scorched emblem over it.

                      Do you lift the caplet?

My body is heavy, and it's hard to breathe. I could choke on the debris and dust lingering in the air. But this before me, this thing... Seeing it, my heart aches.

"Do you lift the caplet?"

The voice of a different soul ringing in your ears. From the white noise to cacophonic gurbles your ears and eyes align to one sight and it still blurs. What you see is a silouette, their head tight between your grip as your grip even in your wandering state of mind, does not loosen.

                      "....elp......me....ckk...! Ahhgh....ckk..."

Their hands on your wrists, you see signs of fighting but for now...the tunneling of your vision only focuses with red all around. Soon their eyes start to twist back as their slaps turn gentler. Still you cannot discern who it is, but your heart feels to be a drum that never stops.

                      > _ Do not let them go.
                      > _ ...release them.

The rain only fell harder. Again, your lifeline is but a pulse. But somehow you will to try.

You lift the caplet, a face you wish you didn't see but even more. The fallen warrior has a sword running through his neck and deep into his shoulder.

What's more, rats come popping out the fallen's mouth. Somehow it doesn't startle you but it provokes you enough to move an inch. And just in time, you avoid being dragged down by the corpse that fell. It feels you are laying down by the crook of your neck. The skitter of rats go by and your senses start to open little by little. The smell comes in. Resisting the urge to empty your jowls, your grip reminds you to turn to face your hand. Worn leather still drenched by the rain, gripping the copper badge. You start wiping the dirtied item as though taking in it would help your condition any. Still you felt better at ease, as you try to see yourself in the emblem but you don't. By the next rub you wince, and then you see it. A short blade embedded in your hand. Straight through the palm. Memories only muddle as you only try to remember but the pain only rises as you focus on it. Noticing something else in the badge you haven't seen before.

There are a pair of eyes that aren't yours even in the heavy rain.

Immediately, you feel your leg being grabbed. You suddenly feel your own weight, feeling the rock you were wedged between dig into your armor. Beneath your head you see a crevice... a fall you know you will not make.

The pain is insurmountable. How could I have no noticed this lodged in my hand...? Regardless, pain or not, I have to do something. Anything. Or, I know...it'll be over.

Your vision returned and just like your conviction, your duty, you feel your arms come alive as they did with color. Tan arm guards twisting across both wrists with the royal guard sigil tapered on each end. Blood of the enemy spilling as they stained over the emblem. The innocence of the jokers eyes fan out into how they truly were---indignant. A smile fixed onto him as with his death his soul would escape. Stilling into your grip as his movements were no more. The knife that would fall from his grip that would have marked you in his place should you have not continued. The broken words coming with dread if he meant it.

Queen? You look in the royal chamber, and between you and the fallen, it was vacant. The footsteps spiraling back, as to you the young commander would remember the sacred oath, coming through your head like a culling blade. Whipping to leave the hall, joining you, ten men strong on your command. All armored and fixed with the Scarlet Sigil of Fort Streganna, the Queensguard of Castle Vadamerca.

[Crit] The blade was removed with an almost surgical precision. with the pain and fluidity of your movements did you remember that you were not wet behind the ears. A seasoned veteran, this knife to you was child's play. And no child would be able to have diced your assaulter as you had in the neck and across the eyes before they would fall back over. You rise, your movements surging back into you now even more than before. Their grip released, the bounce back to your rear leg feeling final. Maneuvering over the other body that now fell to the pooling of corpses beneath. And as you raised your head, you saw even with the rain..

That you were a man all alone, surrounded by fallen corpses on the slow climb up against the odds. The thumping in your heart flared again as you remembered your place up above. Your duty calling you to race against the other fallen soldiers and stragglers all trying to curse their way up this ladder of chaos. From the distance, a whinnying coming down as a Knight slipped down with the horse whose landing already broke. Bodies of others following after as they rolled.

This feeling inside of you, it screams in you like the strength you forgot you had. The gait, the windward sprints that carries you. The position you had before they put you down here. Why all of that was, and then it hit you.

She was up there somewhere, scared and alone. Where you left her to hide. You must get there before they find out.

The party was alive, from all around colors and though the high halls and arches aged with grace, it remained true. That Castle Vadamerca would remain true and just. In your hand a lofty bouquet, in the other, the hand of a young girl. Doing sweet little circles around, as others in the party, of noble or honor of the caste, giving soft claps for the girl as though every movement of hers had them in enchantment. She was after all, the pride of the Kingdom. The face of Castle Streganna. You were not one of hers, but...as you looked across. You were, one of his. The vision of the taller Knight in view, as he was your order and you were his acted command.

And you knew that while the little Crown Princess danced before your little feet...

She had to die, for your own to live. Even if she was raised under your hands and dressed by your efforts.

Smiling pretty as though it was painted with a high gloss coating. Fanfare strumming strings of the heart. Youth budding softly in the hand which would have the power to smite. But why put off a party when you can put off an order?

Your men gather back with empty ends. You lost sight of any sign of possible threat. Perhaps a sloppy thought creeps to your mind if there were any after the end of the vermin back in the chamber.. No. No! You can't doubt yourself---it took more than that for you to get to this position. You can't afford to weaken your resolve now or else fate worse than the current happenstance awaits..

This was a party. A grand one where diplomacy laid on thin strings. If so much as a spark were to escape and land.. Before you could finish such a useless thought, your senses tighten. You had moments ago ended the life of a traitor even during a lapse. You were not the type to hesitate. Regathering your men, you send them off to dally more orders. Touch all the bases of this fort, the security of this party was now in your hands.

"Ser?" The voice of a woman would call, as if she were peering into the hall. But if you were to look, she was only behind the corner by the door.

SCHWIIIK! As it was, it was her last word when she flattened onto the ground. Still. You look up from the Queen's maid. Into the hall where her chamber laid. Your blade still wetted of blood from prior happenstance. Yet it will wet again if it meant there was a chance to save her. This Castle's only hope against the realm.

You've been caught. On the night of all nights, the one who is patrolling this particular section of the Hold is none other than---

"...Rhysand..." [Getting up from, fixing the crack in his thick wrist from the missed assault you attempted] The voice of an old soldier mixed with grit. You could tell that his aura didn't come with the fact that he was to retire--but that retirement wouldn't have stopped what he was. A decorated war hero, just like you, loyal to the Throne.

Aelwin. Your father. The former Seneschal, right under the Master, once heralding Knights like roping children and swine.

He looks at you, his eyes cloudy with grief but even the state of your life and your return could not shake his resolve. It was almost a quiet whisper, the language between the two stoic men. And you knew as he let you take the sword. "Kill me, and you save her."

He had long ago made up his mind. His blade now drawn. Looking up to the sky after the ground but never into your eyes. "Or disgrace us both as you had before."

It was a time of life and light. The hour spinning by the moment. Strangely, this night you feel a different pluck in your fate. It feels smoother. You are almost like another person in this body but again you are not yet fully cut from your duty. As you watch the darling dulcet with chubbiness in her legs and movement fix her dancing, she looks to you with wide eyes and motions for you to join in. As you do, aiding her in her twirls, you catch the steel glint of the one heralding your thoughts.

It was clear, the look in his eyes.

The princess is again in your arms, suffering a nasty habit of spending the majority of her time in them as you often enabled her. Was it softness spreading in your heart or the emptiness wanting to fill itself? She yawns while the party resumes. The maid has not yet returned. Odd. But either way, she is to be back. As even in such a facade of a party, you knew it well, why it was you and not her mother accompanying her tonight. Your eyes search around, ignoring the rumors regarding the elephant in the room. Or the lack of.

I knew it never be this easy. Is it so wrong to desire comfort by her side? To defend her? Yet, why do the gods defy us, lumbering between our touch. Strange would be the pattern of the absent maid and yet it seemed like a mere miff in a swirling tide. The familiar weight of the princess and warmth churning an odd air of protectiveness. Pity the fool who plays with dynamite in their grasp while the wick still was burning.

Sheep are safest within their flock. But the deserter anomalies who smell the storm often survive.
