Themisto found himself alone that night, sipping on a bottle of water he'd bought just before powering up. He'd been inspired by Denebola and Cetus to keep up his traiining and while they couldn't always join him, the newbie senshi tried to make a habit of going out to practice something.

He sat on the rooftop of a restaurant that was closed for the evening, hanging his legs over the side. Themisto was somewhat sweaty, wiping the moisture from his brow.

Ember didn't really have any friends in Destiny City. She didn't know anyone and certainly didn't have any plans as she trotted along the sidewalk. She was just another stray out for a stroll, though strangely dressed, as far as anyone else was concerned. It was the power signature that drew her attention, bringing her gaze up and making her pause in her tracks. It was a little difficult, but with maneuvering she found her way up to the roof and sat down a few paces back from where he sat.

"I suppose I'm not the only one out alone tonight."

The coins on her sash jingled as she moved, settling onto the roof cozily.

"You appear to be very warm. I can't imagine it's the weather, considering."

It was the middle of winter and it was her nice sleek coat that was keeping her warm. Not only that but she always managed to keep warm, running hotter than most people she knew. She preferred cooler weather for just that reason.

Themisto was actually quite surprised when another cat approached him. Last time this happened, it was Katya, a corrupted cat by Denebola's estimation. Katya gave him a great deal of information, sure, but still she harbored the wish to have him corrupt and switch sides. That meant losing all of his memories, forgetting people like Kari and Denebola. He just couldn't do that, regardless of his fears.

But this cat? Themisto had learned how to identify them by signature, just like a senshi or an agent. This one, thankfully, was on his side.

He smiled as the cat approached, offering her some water. "Just finished running around, actually." he said, pulling his shirt away from his sticky body to fan himself a bit. "This weather's real nice for training, you know? Anyway..." The senshi would have held out his hand to shake her paw if that were remotely appropriate. "I'm Themisto. What's your name, Miss Kitty?"

She straightened up at the asking of her name, spine rigidly upright with pride. That was one of her best and worst features: her pride. She was proud to be what she was and do what she did. If the entire world could exist in Order she'd consider herself happy. She prayed it wouldn't be shortened to Emmy or the abomination "Emmers" or some such foolishness. She was who she was and no one could change that.

"My name is Ember."

She moved forward and hopped up lightly onto the ledge he was perched on, sitting to look out over the city. It was deceptively pretty, except for the auras of Chaos scattered throughout its streets. It was her job to find Order to stop it and she took that seriously.

"I don't train very much," she admitted. "Not a lot of call for it besides being able to run and climb trees. I'm well equipped for that, naturally."

Her sleek, small body made her a naturally fast runner and agile when she needed to be. She began to purr as she sat beside him, though, butting her head gently against his hand. There was no reason he shouldn't pet her; his hands were free.

Themisto dipped his head to the cat and gave her a smile. "It's nice to meet you, Ember." He took a sip of his drink then, contemplating his panoramic view of Destiny City from this perch they shared. When she butted his hand, it seemed an automatic reaction to give Ember some good scratches. "It's weird." he pondered aloud, "I mean, I know you guys are cats, but you think and talk like people. Sometimes it's easy to forget and treat you like another person. Uh... not that you aren't but..."

Themisto sighed, defeated. "You know what I mean?"

Truthfully, hanging out with Ember, as coincidental as it was, was preferred to Katya. Ember wasn't feeding him terrifying visions of losing his friends and family, of being inducted into the military. Embed was soft and warm and vibrating, just like a cat should be. She wasn't trying to lead him astray, no pun intended.

"Anyway, I don't get to talk to cats very often. Are there not a whole lot of you guys? I mean, one of them awakened me and then... that was it. After that, I was kinda on my own." Not that his running away for two years had anything to do with it, no sir. "Do cats typically hang out wherever they want, or do you guys have a place to stay? I'm kinda... ignorant about the whole thing..."

Ember was very grateful for the scratches, ever a lover of being petted. Likewise, she was familiar with his dilemma. She was aware that she looked like a pet, but was far from a normal house cat, even if she did have a few of the habits of house pets. Her purrs got louder as she was petted, flopping on her side against him to allow him access to more of her furry body to pet.

"I know what you mean. I often find myself surprised that people aren't sure how to treat me."

She purred and rolled over on her back patting at his hands lightly with her paws. She liked him, she decided. He was probably worth keeping. Her little heart went pitter-patter as she lay against him.

"I know there are others but I wouldn't say I'm very close to any of them. We are rare. For instance, I've never awakened a senshi. I'm supposed to, but it never came up."

Truthfully, she came and went as she pleased and hadn't settled in one place.

Apologies if my phone keeps auto-correcting Ember's name! Sometimes I don't catch it when I'm typing on my phone.

"Boy, can you imagine?" asked the senshi, still absent-mindedly petting the magical, talking cat. "If dogs could talk, man, the whole city would be an awful lot louder. Cats are a good choice." Themisto was an animal lover and did really enjoy dogs, but the thought of having a magical talking dog made him realize stealth would be out of the question. YouTube already answered the question of what if dogs could talk?

The war would sound utterly ridiculous.

He chuckled to himself, looking over at Ember who had flipped over just like a house cat. "So cats aren't really organized either? It's just the Negaverse? How weird is that... why is that, Ember? You cats seem to know an awful lot, but there aren't that many of you. Is that why you don't tend to hang out with senshi on a regular basis?"

Ember admitting that she'd never awakened a senshi gave Themisto a sense of camaraderie and relief. "I'm supposed to defeat the Negaverse, or something but... nope, hasn't happened here either."
PostPosted: Mon Feb 20, 2017 8:05 pm

"I certainly could not!"

Ember wasn't exactly an enemy of canines but she didn't much like the things, either. To her they were a less intelligent version of a house pet and were good for occasional rides on the larger breeds. Slobbery was the main word that came to mind when mentioning dogs, and of that she was not too fond. So long as he kept petting her she would tolerate the talk.

"Organized? No. We only open the door. We can't force anyone to walk through it. People must come to terms with their destinies in their own time."

She always considered it one of the strengths of the Negaverse that they were regimented and organized, unlike the seemingly sporadic White Moon. Certainly her Mauvian brethren could not organize them all. Their responsibilities were as guides, not leaders. Their benefit was in their knowledge, not their ability to fight. Though she was plenty hands on, a strategist she was not.

"I don't know who you've been talking to, but you can't defeat the Negaverse on your own. If you senshi want to defeat them once and for all, you need to be closer, share more. It would help if you were born knowing of your roots, too, instead of awakening when we find you."

Themisto sighed at Ember's dialogue about defeating the Negaverse, sharing... Sharing? Themisto had nothing to share - he was a blank slate of sorts, stumbling around in the dark trying to suss out the edges of his powers, let alone his past. Something about that made the senshi's brows touch.

"Ember, when you say roots, do you mean like... our moons and stars and stuff?" His mentor-of-sorts Denebola had mentioned such things, that her own special place was a star in the Leo constellation. That said star once held a civilization that rode on giant dragonflies. Themisto knew nothing of his own spot in space. "Do cats have their own stars and stuff too?"

Seemed appropriate, being that they were magical, talking cats who could give people superpowers. Maybe they were from space as much as senshi were?

"Well, I haven't defeated any of the agents, either. One of their cats tried to, you know..." Themisto made a gesture and squinted, as if searching the air for a phrase to pluck from it. "...run a little PR with me, and try to make the military look like the best career choice for someone like me."
PostPosted: Mon Feb 20, 2017 11:10 pm

"When I say roots I do mean your true home, yes, but also your past. Someone else walked in your shoes before as Sailor Themisto and learning from that is as powerful as the new experiences you will make."

Ember believed in the roots of the past and the power of a strong sense of self. She believed that learning about the past Themisto could help the current one: be it the life of an ancestor or of his own soul in an old body. Given her beliefs perhaps it would have made more sense for her to be closer to the other Mauvians and perhaps someday she would make that true but for today, she was pretty much on her own.

"We have our own world," she responded softly, "but I have not seen it in a long time."

Ember purred, even as the petting stopped. She was used to housing people's secrets and it sounded like he needed someone to talk to. She gave a little lick to his hand to show that she was there for him, rolling back over onto her belly. She looked up sharply when he mentioned being recruited. A low growl sounded in her throat.

"Pay no attention to those lies. You are what you are meant to be. If you let them take that, you will have nothing left of value. What we have are our identities and our past."

She spoke forcefully, but made no move to do anything physical to back up her point. Instead she let another growl of displeasure sound.

"If you were given this power you deserve it. Chaos is like a cancer and will eat away at you if you let it in."

Themisto gave a soft sound of understanding before returning to give Ember the scritches she so deserved. She was soft and warm and fuzzy, just like a cat ought to be, talking or no. He rather enjoyed her company. "Yeah, that's what I figured, but at least Katya told me how the whole corruption thing works." He would have made air quotes but Ember had ownership of his right hand at the moment. "And Denebola told me that you lose your memories if you go over to the other side. That's pretty terrifying."

And now here was a small, soft cat, filling in the missing pieces of the puzzle. Their homeworld, source of their past, was extremely important. It just validated everything Denebola was saying earlier. "So, someone else was Sailor Themisto too? Denebola mentioned we were reincarnated and something about a cauldron. To be honest, it was a lot to take in..."

Themisto looked up into the sky, wondering what the Themisto-of-the-past was like, and if he or she enjoyed their station. Back then, maybe the internet wasn't even a thing? He had no frame of reference as to when the past was. "She said she would bring me to her star, part of the Leo constellation, I think? Anyway, she said she would teach me how to travel to whatever Themisto is. I haven't tried it yet. No space suit, you know?"

The senshi chuckled, looking over at the feline who seemed perfectly happy to have on-demand pets.

"Corrupting is absolutely the right word for it. Chaos takes your core and poisons it with darkness straight from their endless well."

She spit the words like venom; even speaking about such things left a bad taste in her mouth. What he said about memories was true and why anyone else would allow themselves to be perverted in such a way was beyond her. She nodded along with his words, but hated that the other side worked so hard to take members of the White Moon away from their rightful place. It was a smart tactic but bad form, in her opinion.

"For everyone the experience is different. Some connect to the past with memories of a life they lived before. Others connect through an ancestor far down their line but each time it's the past of who they were. Who you are now."

She nodded again, knowing that this kind of knowledge was hard to absorb. She knew it and did not relish having to open that door to the unprepared. She refused to awaken chibis; able to draw her personal line in the sand against mere children being a part of a war they didn't ask for. No child could prepare themselves for this kind of thing.

"You will find the strength to visit your homeland someday. And you will learn more as you explore. I have faith. I believe that everyone finds their place if they look for it. You may not be strong enough yet, but someday."

Allies. Allies were important too. She swished her tail in lazy back and forth swipes, looking up at the stars. Each of them was the rightful home of a White Moon warrior and some of them had been offered to chaos or, worse, their senshi just never awakened.

Where Denebola was perhaps softer about corruption, more sympathetic to the reasoning someone might have, Ember was wholly against the whole thing. Somehow, even though their viewpoints differed slightly, Themisto found it comforting. Despite the fact that he felt utterly lost, he wasn't alone. Embed had found him, he'd stumbled upon Denebola purely by circumstance, and Cetus was helping to train him in martial arts. Maybe things weren't too bad.

He still lusted after a bazooka or eye-lasers though. He'd feel an awful lot safer if he received lasers when he powered up at night.

Themisto looked over at the cat and gently scratched behind her ears, following her gaze up to the heavens. "What do you think Themisto is, Ember? Is it a star? Or a comet or something? I've been kind of afraid to look it up. Heh, pretty silly, huh?" It's not like a Wikipedia page would jump out of his computer and punch him in the face. Still, it seemed like every step he took towards learning more about both himself and the war, the more steps he couldn't take back. "Denebola seems to really like space travel so maybe it isn't so bad after all."

Maybe there was something familiar up there, but a thought struck him then and he frowned. "Waitaminute, if there's like, stuff up there then why don't our satellites find it? You'd think it'd be all over the news."

Themisto dropped into his faux news anchor voice. This is Ace Buttface reporting live from NASA. Scientists have recently discovered ancient civilizations in the asteroid belt. Whole epic f***-tons of buildings and hi-tech race cars. Who knew??

He coughed then, patting Ember on the head. "Sorry, I shouldn't cuss in front of ladies."

Ember did not see the appeal of the Dark Moon and would not be able to forgive those that made the unthinkable mistake of surrendering to Chaos. Everything in the universe started out pure. If it remained so darkness would have no where to hide. However, life just wasn't that easy. Humanity was messy, complicated, and in this war there were emotions and relationships to consider.

Nothing was ever so easy as black and white. The fact that the Negaverse was so strictly regimented worked highly in its favor and Ember wished that the White Moon would take a cue from them and at least for some sort of structure. Half their recruits had to be lost just due to misinformation or a lack of guidance, like her new friend. If he had no one to tell him the truth how soon would it have been before this "friend" convinced him that he needed to cross over to the other side? There was still a danger of it now, even though she was doing her best to guide.

"It could be a star, a comet, or even a moon. Whatever it is, it's yours."

She heard that there was some sort of information network she could access if she found the right people, but had yet to really get to that point. She chuckled at his comments about space travel. He'd make his own decisions about that soon enough.

"The same magic that keeps you protected also protects your home from prying eyes. If everyone knew about us, things would be a lot worse."

Her serious tone and look completely disappeared as he launched into his impression and she watched him, amused and fascinated, bursting out laughing when he was finished. She didn't even mind the swearing.

"You're pretty good at that. Maybe you should consider journalism as a profession?"

The little black cat was right. Whatever "Themisto" was as a celestial body, it was his. He was named for it, drew power from it... somehow. Denebola seemed like a font of knowledge, as did Ember. Really, maybe staying on this side of the war wasn't too bad, all things considered. After all, if Katya was telling the truth, things may only appear better on the Negaverse side due to excellent public relations work. Underneath the organized, militaristic exterior could lurk a hideous underbelly.

"Maybe you're right - it's better that people like NASA can't see all the old stuff on the moons and comets 'n things. Can you imagine how many people would end up on talk shows and how the news would never let go of it? There'd be news crews crawling around here all the time... what a nightmare."

Civilians would be injured trying to get exclusive photos of powered individuals, newspaper reporters would be oozing out of the woodwork, social media would be ablaze with speculation. Themisto shook his head. The kitty was right - the fewer people who knew about senshi, the better.

Her encouragement at a possible career made Themisto chuckle. "Nah, I don't think I'd be too good at that. Truthfully, I dunno what I want to do with my life. It's kinda tough, trying to balance it all. It's crazy..."

With a soft sigh, he turned to the cat. "Do you have a place to go, Ember? I mean, do you guys get picked up by the pound or anything? You got a warm place to sleep at night?"
