She had to admit, it was rather nice coming to the little coffee shop to do some homework or simply read a book among the hustle and bustle of the constant crowd. People clearly really enjoyed - or needed - their daily coffee fix. Something that always amused her. There was the impatient woman, rocking back and forth on her heels and checking her phone every thirty seconds. An irritated look flashing along her features as she waited to approach the register and place her order. Then there were the men, huddled around a too small table, dressed in business attire and speaking in animated tones. Along the window, an elderly man reading his newspaper while sipping at his latte.
Okay, so she wasn't really working on homework. Her laptop was open, a web page about upcoming concerts and events currently displayed. But Kodi wasn't paying any attention to it. Her blue eyes watched the crowd. It was so relaxing and amusing all at the same time!
"Thailand Wuulong for Carpenter."
Startled out of her people watching, Kodi quickly slid from her chair at the little table she'd snatched, somewhat out of the way of the main crowd, trusting her laptop not to be jacked while she grabbed her drink. With a nod of thanks to the young man behind the counter, she brought her tea back to the table to sit and sip at hit, eyes briefly looking at her laptop again.

August relied maybe a little too much on coffee to get through the day, and a little too less on things like actual food. As long as he was able to function he didn’t think there was an issue with it. He was a grown man who knew his own limitations, and even though it seemed to be something of a contradiction that he was a doctor and probably not the healthiest, he thought he was doing just fine. He sat in the back of the café, sipping at a cup of black coffee as he scrolled through the news articles on his phone. He was in his normal suit and tie, not bothering with his lab coat until he reached the hospital. A name caught his attention, and he lifted his eyes to watch as a young woman made her way back to her table. Carpenter was a common enough name, and he wasn’t usually one to talk to strangers because he just didn’t care, but he figured there was no harm in asking. “Excuse me, you’re not related to Dr. Andrew Carpenter, the professor at the medical school here, are you?” There was a pause, and then he figured he should explain, “I was one of his students.”

It took her a solid minute to register that someone was actually speaking to her. Kodi looked up from her computer in surprise, looking to find a young man staring at her. It wasn't anyone she'd met and she didn't recall noticing him before.
"I-I'm sorry. You startled me a little." She quickly apologized, trying to sift through her thoughts and what he'd said. Something about a professor? At... a school here? Carpenter.
"I know a Magiore Carpenter." Kodi replied curiously. She didn't think that was the name she'd heard. But then, she'd not really been paying attention. "He'd a professor at Romano's. English Literature."
There was a small pause as she sipped at her tea and decided to close her laptop for the time being so she could see the stranger.
"He's my brother, unfortunately." A smile lifted the corners of her mouth as she held out a hand. "I'm Kodi. Kodi Carpenter."

August gave the girl another once over. He wasn’t entirely sure what to think of her, and she apparently wasn’t related to the Dr. Carpenter he knew, but the mention of Romano’s caught his attention.
The name Magiore Carpenter didn’t ring any bells, but it was no secret that the Romano’s school had plenty of negaverse officers that taught and went to school there. It was possible that this girl or even her brother was part of the negaverse.
"Are you a student there? Romano’s?" he asked, wondering if maybe if her connection to Romano’s meant that there were other connections. Perhaps she was already a negaverse officer, but he couldn’t exactly come out and ask.
"It’s nice to meet you, Kodi. I’m August de Rais. I’m a surgeon over at the hospital. Can’t say I hope to see you there any time soon." It was a poor attempt at a joke. His expression hadn’t changed from his typical frown. He wasn’t really the joking type, after all.
Unfortunately, that was about the same time his pager started going off. August frowned as he took it out of his pocket to see the alert that was sent to him. It was the curse of being an on call doctor, but one he couldn’t ignore.
“I apologize for running, but I’m needed back at the hospital,” he said as he prepared to leave by collecting his things, and taking another drink from his coffee mug. A multi car accident usually meant a number of casualties, which meant he was going to have a long day ahead of him.
“It was nice to meet you, Kodi. Take care,” August said with a small nod and turned to head towards the door. It was a short meeting, but he would have to keep an eye out for her and her brother’s names the next time he reviewed the Negaverse database.
