She sent a text to Mark, because didn't feel like standing around in his room watching pizza thaw again.

Sherry eyed her phone for a few moments, then let out a great big sigh.

Text from Sherry
Do you NEED help? I'm on my way.

She put her phone in her pocket, grabbed her coat, and set out for the Death office.

As she walked, she pulled her phone back out.

Text from Sherry
Should I bring anything?

Text from Sherry
Hole punchers are useful for paperwork, btw. Don't throw them out.

Text from Mark

u know how to use a computer rite??

Mark was in an office that looked like it was under some serious redecorating. Almost everything had been taken out of the desks and tables, and then some, to the point where it filled the floors in surprisingly organized piles. The good news was the hallway en route was impeccably refurbished, practically sparkling. A couple of disgruntled Moon Hunters were still arguing outside about window measurements.

The Death Assistant looked up as Sherry came in, and exhaled in relief. "Good like, come take over. Do you think scissors should be put under 'Office supply'," he pointed to the giant pile, "Or '"instruction manual'?"

Sherry really didn't think pasting random words was going to help anyone. Sometimes she wondered about Mark.

"Of course I know how to use a computer," she said as she walked in. Sure, she wasn't up on the current version of Windows or anything, but she'd been busy.

It was almost a relief to be out of that shiny new hallway... she was still half expecting a bill for it.

"Scissors are definitely 'Office Supply', and I'm not taking over." She looked around. "Are you just putting stuff in piles?" Maybe she should take over.

Mark shook his head at the question. "I seriously have no clue. I think there were supposed to be ten piles but the room could like, only fit five. So there's 'office supplies', 'mission report', 'instruction manual', 'furniture', and 'everything else'.

Currently the "everything else" pile just showcased a jacket that suspiciously looked like Gale's trainee coat.

"What the-" Mark picked up a box that was still shaking and then opened it. Inside was a single severed finger, with a pretty simple snake-shaped ring still on it, that was beginning to grow roots at its base, as in literal plant roots. He shrugged helplessly. "Furniture maybe?"

So there was supposed to be a method to the madness, okay. That made her feel a little bit better. She didn't know why he might think scissors went in the 'instruction manual' pile though. She might need to go through things again just to make sure it's all right.

"Okay, I'll start--" She stopped when Mark seemed to have found something interesting. "Hm?" Sherry leaned over to see what he had. Oh. Oh dear.

"I don't think that's for the furniture pile. Mark, why is it still moving? Are those roots? Please say they're roots and not like, stringy finger bits." Sherry reached out to take the box. "Can I see it? What's with that ring?" She was very concerned with reptile rings lately.

"Calm down," Mark immediately closed the box and moved it away despite Sherry's request, "I'm sure like - I'm sure there's a reasonable explanation to all of this, and it definitely doesn't involve plant-hybrid monsters from giant trees. Look, none of this is going to Life until we can figure out why it's going there, unless you want a repeat of that weird clone amalgamation thing happening again, it said clearly on the package, do not combine with minipets."

He shook the box a few more times and then tossed it into other. The box continued to wriggle but did not open. "Okay, next-" he pulled out five key cards, all of them unlabelled. "Office supply, duh," and then he tossed it to the other pile as well. "Crap, washroom break, be right, back, keep on sorting okay?"

Mark scooted off.

Sherry stared at the box, then at Mark. Sometimes it was really hard to follow what he said, and this time the bits she did understand weren't good things. Plant-hybrid monsters? Of course, why not?

"Um," she said, looking at the box where it wriggled in it's new pile next to the key cards and a trainee coat. "Okay."

Sherry sighed as Mark left. He had better com back, because she wasn't entirely sure what she was doing. She did know, however, that he'd put the key cards in the wrong pile.

Moving to the 'other pile' Sherry picked them up, then decided to pick up the box with the finger, too.

It wasn't like it was anyone's personal things (anymore) so it was legit okay to be nosy. Unlike a personal computer a box with a severed finger was free game in Sherry's eyes. Besides, she really wanted to look at that ring.

She stuck the key cards in her pocket because she needed both hands to open the box.

Yep. Still a finger inside. With a ring. It wasn't quite like her ring, though.

The ring was exceedingly ordinary where Sherry's ring was extraordinary, and it didn't echo with any form of power. It was a smooth design, with light ridging against one side, diagonally, to create the pattern of a serpent.

Now that the box was opened longer, the finger was very steadily and rapidly growing into a hand-like shape, vines creating veins and then twisting into a skeletal structure that extended leaves folding into skintone. It also immediately latched onto Sherry's wrist.

The ring was rather ordinary, and Sherry did like taking a closer look at it. She would have looked at it longer, simple as it was it was kind of nice, but sadly the finger in the box was now demanding her attention.

For starters it wasn't a finger anymore. It was growing faster than it had any right to. Growing itself into a hand again. Just as Sherry's brain processed this, the damn thing grabbed her.

"Oh no."

Sherry dropped the box, now fully focused on the viney hand that was firmly attached to her wrist. "No, nope, no," she muttered, grabbing at it with her free hand. s**t. This was a mess, and not at all how she'd pictured this day going.

The trick was not to panic, but that was always a little difficult when things like hands grew out of fingers into plant-people-parts. <********." She turned towards the office supply pile. Mark had mentioned scissors, and she could really use some right then. She was still trying to pull the hand off while she looked.

The hand was now growing a full-fledged arm, and from it a ribcage, stemming downwards into half a formed skull. Stubs of a shoulder blade, mostly branches, wrapped around her arm and began to slowly pry her fingers open.

It was after her ring.

"No, no, no!" Sherry wasn't really thinking anymore. It was growing too fast. Too much, too fast, and a little bit gruesome. What it wanted was clear even as the thing grew - on her hand was the ring.

The fingers of her left hand did their very best to stay in a tight little ball, even as in her right hand she summoned her weapon. The glaive wasn't a close combat thing, but it was a blade, and Sherry wasn't giving up her ring to some plant-person-abomination. Holding her glaive close to it's blade, she started hacking at the thing growing as it clung to her arm.

"Off! It's mine. Off! Off!" She was stabbing at the branches poking at her hand.

The branches broke like snapping straw, leaves and foliage practically crumbling apart. Occasionally it would try to reform itself around Sherry's weapon, always in a thin, spindly nature. Another sound whack to it and it was just a wriggling arm now with vine-shaped fingertips wrapped around its single ring.

It was around that time that Mark came back and stared. "I knew it should have gone into 'Office Supply'."

Sherry just kept hitting it, relieved at the way it fell apart, but still very wary of it. She was worried that if she didn't it'd start regrowing it's body again and then she'd have even bigger issue. "No, stop, die!" She smashed it's little tendrils.

At least she kept hitting it until Mark returned. "What?" she stopped hitting the wriggling arm/hand/vine thing long enough to look at him. "It's not an Office Supply. You need a Bio-hazard Pile."

She turned to hit the hand some more, because 'just in case' was always a valid reason. "Can you hand me the box for it?" A pause. "I'm sorry I let it out." She really should know better.
