At the center of the manor’s courtyard, Buthos had build a marble pool. This was a recent addition to the household, and such an obvious display of affluence that even the normally-showy Myranda was a bit embarrassed by it. It didn’t even serve any particular purpose, since the family had their own well (two wells, actually, one in the kitchen and another near the stables). It was just there for looks, and to give the servants yet another thing to keep clean.

Bahari sort of liked it. Especially on a hot day like today -- with the sun glaring down and all the rooms stuffy and airless, the best spot to be was down in the courtyard, under the shade of the nearly-clipped fruit trees, sitting on the raised white marble wall of the pool. He had his feet kicking about in the water and a book balanced on his knees. His eyes, however, weren’t on the words, but on the crystal-clear ripples he was making. He was trying to picture some real waves… and failing, mostly because he’d never seen any.

Myranda (the lady of the house) and Sarii (her precious teenaged daughter) had a special guest of some sort; they seemed excited about her, but whoever she was, she hadn’t been deemed important enough to welcome though the main doors. Bahari knew she was here, because he could hear the ladies’ laughter filtering down from one of the windows overlooking the courtyard, but he hadn’t seen her come in. She must have come in through the servants’ door. Bahari was admittedly curious about her, but he’d have to wait to see if he could catch sight of her later -- Myranda was even less fond of him now that he was older, and it was best to stay out of her way altogether.

Sorry it took so long to reply. I was on a mini vacation over the weekend!

Nerves raced through her as she fidgeted with her own dress. Masika had been invited to the house of a lady so that she could show off her designs and possibly even gain a client. The blue young lady brought with her several drawings of dresses as well as examples of others that she had already sewn together. They were the more popular styles that most ladies had been getting lately. Masika thought that if the woman wanted to try them on to see how they fit then it would be best to have them along. Of course that meant her hands were full. Several parcels were tucked under her arm, as well as the portfolio of drawings, but she managed to not drop anything.

The hybrid had a grace about her even with her arms full. When she finally got to set things up she was careful not to let the dresses get dirty or the drawings to slip out of place. Since this was her first meeting at this house she would allow the lady to browse everything before asking the questions that were typical of a dressmaker.

Myranda and Sarii were pleased with the hybrid girl's display of dresses. Sarii was still picking out dresses for her wedding party (the wedding itself had been in the works for what felt like ages now), and although her own dress (which cost a small fortune, of course) had already been ordered from the city's finest dress-maker, she was looking for something special for her bridesmaids, and Masika's work seemed to fit the bill. It was trendy but creative, decorative but not too stifling, with room for dancing and drinking and eating in.

Myranda has more practical needs -- she wanted more dresses to replace some of the hers that had gone 'out of fashion', according to her. So the appropriate arrangements were made with Masika; four matching dresses for Sarii's bridesmaids (whom she would have to visit for measurements) and two dresses for Myranda. With that dealing done, the two noble ladies retreated to their private quarters and left the hybrid alone to deal with packing up.

This was Bahari's chance to investigate. He made his way over to the greeting-chamber where the visitor had set up her things, and peered about the room. He was a bit disappointed when he saw all the dresses -- that wasn't his thing, although the dyed white clothing he wore was clearly well-made. However, the hybrid woman herself was more than interesting enough.

"Hi." He spoke up from the doorway. "Where are you from?"

There was a feeling of excitement that coursed through her as the ladies left the room. She had more orders to fulfill! Masika was on the high that new dressmakers ride when they start out. As she started to move around and fold fabrics and dresses so that they could be loaded into their respective boxes she was grinning from ear to ear. Then a voice caught her attention; caused her ears to flicker and her antennae to twitch all at once. The hybrid turned to look at who it was that spoke, grin still plastered onto her face since nothing could ruin her mood right now (she hoped), and when her eyes landed on the other hybrid she seemed to offer up a small giggle. "Pardon?" She asked innocently. As though the person she was facing had asked where she had walked off the street from.

Masika certainly hoped that was what they meant by the question and not which parents she came from or the place of her birth. Those were too personal to discuss with a stranger. "Oh, I'm a local dressmaker." The young woman gave her generic answer and lowered her eyes to focus back on her folding. Masika wasn't being rude she just didn't know what else to do. So small talk came to mind and she started to speak a little more. "Do you live here as well? With your family?" She really wanted to know if she would get the chance to make anything for the hybrid to wear. The interesting skin tone would be worth it in the end.

"Oh." Bahari tilted his head. It wasn't what he'd meant, but he'd accept it as an answer for the moment, because it did explain what Lady Myranda and Sarii had been so excited about. "More wedding stuff, I guess."

He had a typical teenage boy's lack of enthusiasm about the upcoming event. But he did reach out to (carefully) touch the edge of a dress that the woman had brought. The fabric was fine and smooth -- it felt like water woven into cloth, slipping from between his fingers the moment he loosened his grip. He was no expert on dresses so he could scarcely make any intelligent comment about the handiwork, but it seemed quite good. The stitching was neat, and the embroidery was pretty.

"This is nice. Way too frilly for me, though. Lady Myranda always tries to dress me up when guests are over, but it's so itchy. Bleh."

The hybrid woman asked him if he lived here, and he nodded. "Yeah, but no family. Lord Buthos just sort of takes care of me, I guess. I call him uncle but he's not really my uncle. Obviously. I don't know my family, but it's ok, I like living here. Well, except for all this wedding business, that's a bore. Did you grow up in Oba? Do you live in Sulburi?"

She watched as his fingers touched one of the dresses. Since she didn't mind the act there was no fear of the fabric being ruined or anything like that on her face. Instead there was only her usual soft smile. Masika seemed a little intrigued that a boy would be interested in touching the dress to begin with. Maybe he liked the material?

She giggled softly when he said that it was too frilly for him and offered a nod of agreement. "That material is actually really soft on the skin. No itching." She knew that some noble clothes were made of a heavy and resilient material that could also be stifling. Due to that it could make some people itch. So she did her best to use softer things when she made her clothes. With the explanation of his situation she felt her antennae lower a fraction. Masika wasn't sure if she should be upset and worried or a little pleased that someone was at least taking care of the boy. "I see.." There wasn't musch more she could say without overstepping.

"Mm, no I grew up in Matori." Her hands moved to motion to the side as if Matori was just across the street from them. "I do live in Sulburi now since it's better for business." The hybrid's hands came to clasp one another in front of her. In truth she wasn't sure what else to do with them.
