Briiva finally stepped out of the shower room, still drying off her hair with her towel. She had taken a decidedly long shower today, in part due to how hard she had worked today. Mostly cardio: Treadmill, rowing machine, swimming pool. She found herself coming to the gym more often than she ever did back home, it so far felt the most therapeutic of her hobbies. Of course that was probably because she always worked out until she exhausted herself, and she knew that there would be struggle tomorrow morning to even get out of her bed. With a slight sigh, Briiva rolled her towel and threw it around her shoulders, going to pull open the door to the entrance.

Only to have the door come flying towards her, moving much lighter beneath her hand than she could have expected. Suddenly, it jarred to a half mere inches from Briiva's nose and a low voice growled a curse. While the word was very filthy indeed, it somehow seemed less angry and more moderately annoyed - as if the owner of the word just had a general beef with the world and it was nothing personal. Before she could react more, the door started to edge open a bit more in an attempt to force her back a few steps. "If you get out of the way, I can get this open and we both can use the door," said her faceless opponent. WC: 121

Briiva lurched as the door provided much less resistance than the strength she had used to open it. Almost reflexively she jumped backwards, her flight-or-fight obviously less concerned with her a** than her face. Being tired and freshly showered didn't seem to help matters any and Briiva's arms briefly pin wheeled as she desperately tried to catch something, anything that could hold her weight long enough to soften the blow. The door stopped short of hitting her however, seemingly held by someone on the other side, something that Briiva decided to use to her advantage. And not be introduced to yet another person sprawled out on the ground. Gripping the side of the door took more effort and fumbling that she would have liked, but she managed to finally grasp the door and pulled herself to it, saving her a** from being sore in the morning. Briiva breathed heavily, the brief adrenaline spike leaving her feeling just a little jittery. She took several more deep breaths to normalize her system before the person on the other side of the door spoke up. "Oh! Right, just a sec." Briiva pushed herself off the door, cheeks burning from the embarrassment of being so absent-minded.

Once she moved away from the door and released the handle, it finished its swing in a slow, stately manner. "Thanks," the same voice echoed. This time, it was a bit warmer and an almost-chuckle lingered beneath it. When the door was open far enough, she caught sight of the man on the other side and the resistance made perfect sense. He was enormous, tall and stocky and dressed in sweatpants with an old Army Ranger t-shirt stretched over his barrel chest. He offered Briiva a faint smirk. "Hey. Coming or going?" WC: 213

"I uh..." Briiva mind was blank at the moment, at least blank of anything that she could say to the person standing before her, holding open the door. The flush didn't leave her face, nor was it likely to anytime soon considering hot Briiva liked her showers. come on idiot, say something! "Well, I was about to leave, at least until I nearly clocked myself with this here door." She did her best to not stare, but she found it damn difficult. Compared to her small stature, the man in front of her might as well have been a mountain. Briiva had other things to do, but at the moment she was wracking her brain for an excuse to stay and get to know this stranger just a little bit better. "I haven't seen you around here before, at least not recently. I'll admit, I don't really get out much here besides the gym and labs, so it's easy enough for me to miss a new person, but.." Briiva felt herself slowly losing control of thinking before speaking so she cut herself off before she came across as a complete moron. "I'm Briiva, from Hephaestus dorms."

"Volkov." He extended a big, calloused right hand as an offering towards polite manners. It was at odds with the short, sharpness of his last name. He waited until she took his hand and then added, "Lukas. You can call me Lukas if you want. Ares." Lukas ran dark eyes over the petite woman in front of him. Small, sure, but she seemed quick and there was some definite strength to her. Her hold and pull on the door proved that. He racked his brain for a moment and came up with some data on Hephaestus. "God of the forge?" he asked suddenly. "Do you build stuff then?" WC: 321

Briiva nodded in affirmation at Lukas' guess. She was aware of Ares' role in the pantheon was that of war, a placement that would seem to be apt given his -admittedly tautly stretched- Rangers shirt, but if you were playing a game of Guess That Ancient Greek God's Role! Ares would be in the warm up round. "I work on propulsion technology, or at least that what I'm currently majoring in. I'm very hands on though, so I try to do as much of the fabrication aspect that I can. I'll admit that recently most of my work had been theoretical, in part because of the difficulties in procuring certain materials." Briiva brushed her bangs back behind her ear, still not quite over just how tall Lukas was. Of course, she had just finished gushing about what she did, it would only be fair to ask a little about him. "So, Lukas. Were you in the Rangers like that shirt is leading me to believe?"

"Yep." He seemed to realize that such a short answer could be viewed as rude and added, "I've been out for a few years." Lukas tipped his head to one side to study the petite woman and seemed to be working through some sort of mental mathematics, getting her on plane with what she just told him was her passion. Then he nodded briefly, lifted a hand, and indicated she should move further back into the gym. After all, his backside was catching breezes from the Michigan winter. He did not quite wait for her to comply before he himself moved, stepping to one side and further into the wide open room. "Propulsion?" he asked. "As in jets?" WC: 439

Briiva complied with Lukas' request, taking the opportunity to lean against a nearby treadmill. She was initially disappointed he had been so short in divulging his own career, but it was the army after all. The few missions Briiva had been on had proved taxing both physically and mentally, Briiva couldn't even imagine what being a soldier would put someone through. With that in mind, she resolved not to pry to much into things that he may not want to talk about. She came back to the conversation at hand about when he was asking if she worked on jets.
"I guess it would be more accurate to say that my field is propulsion development. My thesis is alternative propulsion technologies that can operate in a vacuum. Our current go-to is of course rockets, but their fuel to thrust ratio is pretty low to, say, ion- propulsion, which in turns has the downside of very low acceleration. I guess you can say that I want to redefine space travel."
Briiva let slip a grin, while also hoping that she wasn't going to talk Lukas' ear off.

As she had gone into more (and possibly excessive) detail about her area of study, Lukas' face took on a more bemused cast and one eyebrow lifted as he listened. Then, when she wound up with a grin, he could not quite suppress his own half-grin back. "That sounds pretty heavy," he commented dryly. "Well over this grunt's head. All I know about rockets, propulsion, and Newton's Third Law falls under the list of Stuff I Can Shoot With." He shrugged a bit. Then he gestured behind her at the gym. "Were you done working out?"

Briiva couldn't help but giggle at the man's dismissive shrug. She couldn't blame him for just letting her mouth speak wash over him, but she did appreciate the polite redirect of the conversation. She didn't want to bore Lukas to death, so maybe not talking about her field of study would be helpful in those regards. "Did you almost knocking me on my a** as I was leaving give it away?" She smirked up at him, fingers tightening on the towel draped over her shoulders as she did her best to not give away how worn out she was. It was at least tired enough that her fear of embarrassing herself from passing out in front of him surpassed her desire to watch him build a sweat. That wasn't creepy, right?

"Ah, yeah." A low sound that, after a moment, she decided had to be a chuckle escaped him and Lukas smirked more. "I should probably apologize for that. But, you know, you were pulling on it, too. How do you know it was all me and not just your impressive strength?" Before she could answer his joke, however, he lifted a hand to brush aside any protests. "Sorry," he said. Then he gave her another assessing gaze, brown eyes lit with more amusement. "Just out of curiosity, what do you use? Weapons wise, I mean." WC: 630

Briiva was about to say something about his apology being unnecessary when he continued his statement, with more than a little unfortunate wording. It was all she could do not to let out a loud laugh, though the mental image was certainly enough to paint her cheeks a little more rosey than they had been moments before. Fortunately, she was able to somewhat maintain her composure long enough for the subject to change. "I've been using a longbow. I tried a claymore once with a friend, but, ah, that didn't end up so hot. Got my shoulder pretty good, mostly cause it slipped our minds that dummy weapons were a thing." Briiva looked carefully at Lukas, trying to deduce what weapon he might use based solely on his build and stance. It got her nowhere, of course, as she hadn't spent nearly enough time with any one weapon to be able to tell a different in how you had to hold yourself to use one from the other.

As if reading her mind, Lukas smirked in a completely unwholesome way. Still he said nothing but only politely listened to her answer before nodding. "Yeah, there's a big difference between a ranged weapon and something you have to get up-close for," he agreed. "Longbows have some pretty serious distance that goes with them. Crazy how we get offered everything except a sensible sidearm." He lifted one large hand and motioned towards the wall of weapons. "Which, believe me, I would give my left something or other for a good pistol." He paused. Then he shrugged. "I went with the big ******** axe. I figured it was more familiar than a sword or whatever else. I'm not a shield sort of guy." WC: 752

"I vaguely remember something about modern weaponry and magic not mixing?" Briiva shrugged as she walked over to the wall, pulling a bow from the rack to examine it. "Of course, I would love a chance to comparing some magic spells effects to high explosive when it comes to effectiveness. Only real magic that's happened to be was being turned into a tiger and a badger." She paused thinking back on the event. It had been a fun experience, if only a tad bit harrowing. "I'm not as hung up on the no modern weapon weapons dealy, if only because I've never used a firearm. So... Big ******** axe, huh?" Briiva grinned mischievously.
