Let's face it: there was really only one adult on the island. And America did act as a helpful helper who helps for a good few hours because she's hella helpful like that. But it was only a matter of time until she was up on tip toe to whisper at Mimsy, "I heard there's vending machines in the big buildings. Let's stock up... for survival." And that was why the sounds of tinkling glass and quiet, "Why the hell are there so many boxes of Dots in here?!" filled the hallways of the Main HQ. "Only take some of the crappy candy, Mimsy. We need them to look like we're being nice to anybody who crosses us."

Unlike America, Mimsy had no desire to be a helpful helper - at least not to her mother, who was the worst of her parents. She did appear interested in continuing to be a co-conspirator to any and all of America's plans, however, and followed right along as the other girl embarked on a raid.
Now that she was here, she wasn't sure that she was deserving of the position of America's co-conspirator. Her face one of intense concentration, she stared at everything the vending machine had to offer.
She seemed to be stuck in the staring position, until she finally broke her silence with a whisper in return: "Which candy is qualified as 'crappy'?"

Opening her mouth to explain the basic candy food groups and which ones should be coveted and the tiers that went down from there, America paused. She considered. Not so much as looking beyond her own orbit, but maybe a little to the right of it, as the other girl already had the good taste to orbit America in the first place. She asked, "Well, what kind of candy do you like and which do you hate?" Another pause, "You aren't diabetic or anything, are you?"

The spindly satellite paused and began to think again. Had she ever had candy? Mints were likely categorized as hygiene products, not candy. She had received a small peppermint candy cane one year from a teacher just before Christmas, granted to each student as they exited for winter break; candy was in the name of the confection, so it undeniably counted as candy. Unfortunately, she had no idea if she liked it, as she had grossly misinterpreted the point of the gesture and simply kept it as if it were any other physical indication of academic achievement. "I am not diabetic." The simplest answer was not supposed to be tackled first in a complex problem, but she thought it necessary here. "I think that I am lacking critical information. I have received no guidance in this matter and may need to test them all before I arrive at a conclusion. Will you perform this experiment with me?"

It takes a moment for America to translate that into, I haven't eaten any of this so let's try them all. Went it got through though, America lit up, head to toe with childish excitement, " Oh, hell yeah! Let's try them all!" Clearing out some of the glass, she helped Mimsy organize the candy between them, she added, "I heard your tastebuds change when you go through puberty, so I probably needed to retry them all anyway."

Seeing America's extra burst of exuberance at the idea of this series of tests made Mimsy smile, pleased to receive such a positive reaction. She was getting a little better at the expression, but still had a long way to go. "That is a pragmatic decision. It is certainly best for your knowledge to be current." With the candies all lined up and prepared for their experiment, she eyed one box in particular, recalling her earlier comment. "Will you even retest... The Dots?"

Mouth grimly set, America nodded and then had to add, "But only a red one. Red's usually the best flavor so if that's no good, the rest is just gonna be a rainbow of disappointment." They may as well get it over with, though, so that's the first one she reached for. "Your teeth are probably nicer than a lot of kids, 'cause no candy. But what did you do for Halloween?"

A dejected teenage boy wearing just about dark everything walked over to the vending machine, saw the two at it, and sighed deeply, walking away with exaggeratedly long steps. Why didn't vending machines ever understand that he just wanted to be left alone?

A nod was returned as Mimsy made a note about the preferential position of red in candy. Another was given in response to the comment of her teeth, which were always cared for as directed. It was the question that threw her off. "What did I do? Is there a specific Halloween that you would like for me to recall?" As she waited for the answer, she carefully removed a red candy from the box of Dots - patience was impossible when science was at hand. She chewed it with great difficulty, and though it was rude to speak with food in one's mouth, she wasn't sure she had another option. " America I do not like this." With a bravery unmatched by anything other than facing her cousin, she forced herself to swallow the mangled Dot.

"Well it's a big candy holiday! So when you dressed up and went out to get candy, what did you do with it all?" America watched the emokid slink off and decided they'd probably had a moment of significant eye contact where he clearly understood his place in the pecking order. It was a shame he was too intimidated because he was kind of cute and she was probably gonna b-cup up in like, 10 minutes of candy eating because she was pretty sure candy helped plump more than your butt and that's why sometimes cake caused the chest tingles. Sighing, she turned to tell Mimsy this when she saw the girl swallow the Dot. "Okay, okay! I know CPR! So if you think you're gonna choke point to your throat but if you're okay, just like...give me a thumb's up!"

The most miserable, truly undeserved thumbs-up that had possibly ever existed was given to America. "I did not do those activities. I did receive candy at school, however." Mimsy left out the part about not eating it. And the part about it only happening once. "What did you do with it all?"

"Wow, is your family Jehova's Witnesses or something?" America opened up a pack of emergency gummy worms and held them out toward the other girl with a look of profound concern. "I ********' hogged out 'cause I'm really good at getting candy outta folks. I'd go out for hours and cover all the hotspots real good. So I'd be a fat possum for weeks and then I'd save the rest to last me, 'cause back when Aunt Prudie was alive I got grounded so much." The last was said with the hollow prison yard stare of a perpetual convict.

At some point Roland had separated from the other kids in Caroline's ever growing army/daycare/cult. It wasn't that she was bad, or the other kids where bad so much as a small bit of curiosity was starting to sink in.
So when Roland heard something shatter he cautiously crept towards the sound peeking around a corner to spot two other girls, one of them clearly the Mindy person from Twitter and the other the girl who posted lots of emojis. Except they looked different then their pictures on the phone.
"...Did you guys just smash up the vending machine?" He scooted closer fidgeting a bit, "Do they have Doritos in there?"

Even as a child Lawrence was one of nature's scavengers, skulking around and taking whatever he could get, so it wasn't all that surprising that when someone brought down a large prey beast like a vending machine that he appeared as if following the scent of fallen candy.
This Lawrence wasn't actually all that thin in contrast to his older self, raised on a diet of overly nutritious cheap food and with a variety of metabolism messing medicines.
He recognised Mimsy and assumed the scary girl next to her was probably America.
He still had his claws summoned, but seemed a bit less dangerous than he had been of late also.
"Hi." he said, smiling in a friendly sort of way.

It was Mimsy's turn to take some time to process and sift through what America said, slowly piecing it together until she thought she had the right idea. While she wasn't quite sure what a religion had to do with anything, she did understand the gravity of being grounded. " Grounded," she breathed out, eyes wide, as if America really were talking about prison. "You are very experienced in the acquisition of candy. I would think that this is a beneficial skill. Why were you penalized?" A gummy worm was plucked out and held up for inspection. She seemed to really be into the idea of this kind of candy, and was in the middle of putting the worm in her mouth when she heard a voice--then another. In a panic, she scrambled to sit directly at America's side, both hands covering her mouth (and the half of a gummy worm still sticking out of it).
