Mel and Jordan had been wandering in the jungle, Melvin taking the knife they had found and cutting at various sticks and twigs even if they had a path to follow just for something to do and because he doubted that, once he got home, he wouldn't have a chance to hack through the jungle.

After a while, he stopped and looked up. "Wow, Jordan! Look up there!" He pointed up to where a massive fort was built high into the trees. "They have a lookout here!"

Jordan followed along, fascinated by the flora and the slightly creepy lack of fauna. He let Mel take the lead, occasionally lagging behind to inspect something, then catching up again, reluctant to be separated from his new friend in the absence of anyone else he knew.

When Mel pointed up, Jordan looked, and said in an awed tone of voice, "Dude. That's awesome. Let's try to get up there."

"Yeah we can see anyone who might come around for miles. Maybe we can see the whole place." Putting the knife away and tucking it back into his pants, he followed up to where a very long ladder went up to the opening of the tree-house.

"That is really up there." He managed before looking at Jordan, before adjusting his backpack to make sure everything was packed tightly into it before grabbing the first rung of the ladder.

Just don't look down. He told himself, before starting his way up. It was a good thing that they weren't anywhere windy or it would be really bad climbing up.

"Yeah, it'll be safer to have a place to look out from. We could camp there tonight if it's solid," Jordan suggested, trying not to sound too excited about this. Really, though, a treehouse in the jungle was pretty awesome.

He let Mel get a little way up the ladder before he started up himself, politely not crowding the other boy, going a little slower than he would have on his own.

Up and up and up and he really needed to stop counting the rungs of the ladder of notice just how the trees around them were going down and down before he looked up and noticed the hatch above. Stopping, he pushed up and then climbed up a step more until he shoved himself up against the latch. With a heave, the latch opened and he climbed up onto the floor and turned to help Jordan up before clothing the latch back down.

Looking around, he saw there were chairs already here. "Wow. This is the best hideout we could ever find and no one else is here."

Grinning, he stood up and headed straight to the window, looking out across an expanse of jungle trees before he saw a vast line of blue. "There's the ocean!"

"This is incredibly cool," Jordan agreed as he dropped his bag on the floor and moved over to look out the window with Mel. He had no trouble with heights, and he stretched to get a look at how high they were, looking down at the ground far below. "We're so high up, like two stories."

He looked out over the trees to the blue line of the ocean. "Maybe we're in, like, Florida," he suggested. It was obvious they were on a coast.

"Oh, what if we're in Hawaii!" He said, not sure exactly where but he knew it was tropical and with a beach. "I wonder if there are any boats at the beach! I can drive us out of here." He said, completely confident that ANY boat they find he could sail.

Excited, he dropped his bag too and then moved to the other side, looking out all around. "There is water everywhere. You can even see the other buildings from where we went. This is nuts. Are there any binoculars?" He said, looking around for anything that was in the lookout.

"You can drive a boat? That's cool," Jordan opined. He could swim well, b ut he certainly couldn't drive a boat.

"Water everywhere? Are we on an island? Maybe we are in Hawaii. But I thought there would be more bugs in Hawaii." Jordan made a circuit of the treehouse, found a trunk, and dug through it. "Hey, binoculars," he said, and held a pair up. "There's a bunch of like notebooks and stuff in here, and some old blankets, and some weird equipment. Oh, and a canteen, but it's empty."

"Yeah. I go on our boat each summer. It's not a super fancy one though. My uncle has a super nice one and he lets us go on that. I can even work a sail too and do a couple knots. We live really close to the ocean too, but it's not as warm and bright as that water. Ours is like....a deep blue. Not tropical like it is here." He turned and went to pull out everything from the chest, taking out he blankets and deciding to undo them to make a spot for their beds.

"I wonder if they wash these." He said with some concern, but decided it was better than directly on the floor, throwing them out and laying a few flat before pausing.

"Uh....are there any lamps or flashlights." If they were setting up to sleep here, would they have ANY light to .....to make the place safe?

"I was on a boat once, one of my friends, his dad has one. It was cool. We live close to the ocean too," Jordan offered. "But it's dark greeny blue and it's always cold, even in summer. I still like swimming."

He helped arrange the blankets, because camping out was cool and camping out in an amazing treehouse was even cooler. When Mel asked about lights, he stopped to go back to where he'd dumped his bag, triumphantly producing a small flashlight out of it. "I got one. Maybe the guy we got these from does camping?" he suggested.

"Maybe the guy is a sociopath who needs to have night murders." He said as he looked back at Jordan. "He kept ropes and knives and we already saw his room. This whole island could be made up of kidnappers and assassins or just like - a murder island with no laws." He said, somewhat romanticizing the idea a bit with a smile.

"Not like they can get us here though." He was glad for the light and looked out again as the sun continued to move over the blue horizon line of the ocean.

It got him to thinking about something that he had wanted to ask.

"Has your mom been sick a long time? Anyone there to watch over her?"
PostPosted: Tue Feb 07, 2017 4:28 pm

"It looked pretty normal," Jordan pointed out. "If it was a murder island, I bet there would be like, deathtraps and stuff all over the place. Maybe with man-eating plants in the jungle." They hadn't seen the basement rooms; if he had, he might have put more stock into the idea.

"Yeah, the treehouse is defensible. Only one way to get in. If anyone tries to get us we can kick them in the face and they'll fall down the ladder," he pronounced confidently.

At the question, he went still for a moment. Then he moved over to lean on the windowsill and look out, carefully controlling his voice. "She's only been in the hospital for like a few weeks," he explained. "My aunt is taking care of stuff and looking after me and my brother. But we don't know how long it's going to be. Maybe not long," he said, sounding out the idea again, but not like he believed it.

He pulled out the water bottles and snacks out onto the table.

"Where's your dad?"

"My dad died last year," Jordan said, still looking out the window, his voice still as steady as he could make it, though it had taken on a rough edge.

Looking at the table, moving the bottles in perfect rows and then followed this by making the granola bars do the same.

Taking one, he walked over and offered Jordan one of the bags of chips. "Sorry. Was....it the same thing your mom has?"
