At some point, Otto wandered off from the acquaintances he'd made while trying to escape the island. The longer he was there, the more he wanted to paint the walls with graffiti and throw hard things at breakable objects.

At this point in his cabin fever, he was whacking every door he passed by with an aluminum bat he'd found on his wanderings. He'd make the wackos who kidnapped him sorry they were ever born.

While making his rounds during what was most likely the time period where half of Death Division was making a barricade, he suddenly spotted Otto dangerously nearing the office corridor where it was off bounds to non adults.

"Excuse me," Carl politely said to Otto, trying to wait for an opportunity between the loud noises, "this place is for adults only."

Otto stopped mid-swing to give the other boy a seething glare. At age fourteen and reaching only five feet in height, his intimidation factor was low despite his best efforts.

"Give me one reason why I should give a s**t?" Otto growled back. "Ain't seen a single adult since I woke up here. They wanna enforce some bogus rules on me, they can tell me to my face. Or they can shove it!"

For good measure, he slammed the end of the bat down onto the floor between them, hoping to scare the other kid off.

Carl's eyes comically widened and for a minute he looked like a puffed up cat. "That's very rude," he suddenly said, "You shouldn't treat your weapon like that, Rep said weapons have feelings."

A second thought occurred to him. "Wait, did you just wake up now? Because I've been here for a very long time." It was a week, but Otto didn't need to know.

"It's a ******** baseball bat, not a cat. Bats don't got feelings, pinhead." Otto growled. In his mind he continued to ignore the voice that insisted it had thoughts of its own. If he talked back to it, that made it real, and then he'd have to admit he was crazy.

"Huh? And where is here? Ain't nobody explained anything to me yet." Mind you... Otto hadn't a mind to listen to anyone either. But that was neither here nor there. He didn't want to go home, since home sucked a**. But he wasn't sure he wanted to be here either.

"So what, you think yer hot s**t cause you been here a while, huh? That it?" He stomped one step closer and leaned up close. "Joke's on you cause I'm the one with a ******** metal bat."

He sighed. "So what? You're going to hit the one person who can explain everything to you and then waste a lot of time trying to figure out what I was trying to say? Look, just put your stupid bat down, and I'll show you something."

He paused. "I promise it'll be super neat."

"Tch. Fine." He didn't appreciate being outed on bad decisions, but he had a point. So Otto tossed the metal bat down the hallway, relishing in the clattering sound it made the whole was down.

"It better be super ******** neat."

He sharply stared at Otto for a second because swearing was bad, and then just continued to silently walk down the stairs. There was quite a fair amount of chaos going on in the hallways, some things were burning, other people were looking lost and confused, and most teens had just settled for being petulantly tired.

About five twists and turns later, they came to a door at the end of a very long corridor. It seemed to be a very special and secret corridor as it took two closed sets of doors to enter and the door at the very end said very specifically:

MARK'S LAIR OF DOOM DO NOT ENTER

- Also because the door was plastered in DANGER yellow tape so everyone knew how dangerous it was.

Carl simply just pushed the door open, and sidestepped to let a few stray rats escape out. The only way to explain the room was the copious amount of tech everywhere, though there were also quite a vast, vast collection of collectable figures (not toys, figures) mostly from Star Wars and Marvel, lava lamps, glowsticks and lightsabers in progress, packets of leftover food some of it extremely expired, empty beer bottles, DVDs, and about anything anyone who had a severe packrat problem could wish for including for some reason an espresso machine and toaster oven with a warm pizza pocket still in it.

"There, you can- you can play here all you want and you won't be destroying anything." He paused. "Anything important."

Otto followed Carl reluctantly at first, but as they passed bye double sets of doors, he started to think he might be getting somewhere useful. Until the rats, he'd truly believed that.

Entering the foul smelling lair, Otto covered his nose with a scoff. The place reeked. Not that his own room was a heavenly haven back home, but his parents would kill him if he left mouldy food sitting out. He ignored the trash and the dorky figures that he totally wasn't jealous of, and admired instead the grand heap of technology surrounding him.

Carls comment about playing in here made him wish he'd brought his bat, just to prove the kid wrong about trusting Otto Graves with anything 'unimportant'.

"Is this like.. the storage room from useless trash?" Otto asked in all honesty, taking careful steps further inside. His feet were still bare, and he was regretting this instantly. If only this place had shoes his size. He had no idea what manner of filth littered the floor. After all, those rats had come from this roo---Oh dear Lord, is that a cockroach?

Otto hopped up on a table and tip toed his way across the room to a chair before sitting down, keeping his feet propped on the seat and NOT on the floor. He spun in place a moment, getting a 360 degree look around before settling his gaze on the computer in front of him.

"Does this work?" He asked, already pushing a button to turn it on. Maybe this thing had Minesweeper...

The computer immediately turned on, and the only thing that greeted Otto was a full screen with blinking red text that read

EMERGENCY EVACUATION PROTOCOL

The list went on and on and included things like:

- In case of emergency island hazard, make sure all portals are locked after evacuation

- Secure all loose baggage and help yourself before assisting others

- In the situation others have been affected by the situation, assist by exiting the island and then assessing the situation

- A self detonation device is readily available at all designated locations. This will eliminate all evidence of sensitive material. Please consult the self detonation manual for more information.

ISLAND SET TO LOCK: PROCEED? (Y/N).

Carl however, had not made a single step into the doorway and just kept on pacing around it. "Yeah it- yeah sure. You enjoy that computer okay, I'll be back later."

He turned around to leave.

"This don't look like Minesweeper..." Were they on an island and this system alert was for real, or maybe it was just a very convincing simulator. He looked up as Carl murmured something, finding that the other boy was leaving. Maybe the cockroaches were too much for him. He understood. It was pretty damn gross in here...

"Wait, dude I don't think this is a game..." He said half heartedly, not paying much mind to the fleeing figure. He said he'd show him something super neat, so he supposed this room was it. He just thought the little dweeb might stick around to explain himself.

"Self detination devices..? Thats a bit extreme. Can't be real." He leaned back in his chair, mulling over the game mechanics before choosing what he'd do. "Maybe its a tactics game. Like Risk?"

"Island set to lock. Yes or No..." He leaned in close to the screen. "Yes?" He hit the key to confirm.

He sighed a little and turned around as Otto said 'wait', suddenly feeling obliged. Carl did tell the adults that he would help, so theoretically, Otto was his obligation to help. "What's Minesweeper? I'm sure there's games on there, Mark always talks about them and-"

"Lockdown initiated. Self detonation device for section 32-1 activated. Detonation set in five minutes."

- His eyes widened quite comically open at the loud noise as the room, and hallway suddenly began to blare and flash red. "Island set to lock? What- what did you do?"

Oddly enough, this wasn't too far stretched from what Mark would have said.

Otto hesitantly turned to face Carl, who'd not left at all.

"I.. pushed yes?" He wasn't sure how he could divert the blame from himself as he was in the literal hot seat right now. "Look man, you told me you'd show me somethin' cool. How was I supposed to know this whole place is set to blow with one ******** button? This is your fault, man. Own up!"

Carl didn't say anything for a solid ten seconds as the timer ticked down because he was trying to figure out if this was one of those computer games that Mark was talking about. It looked a little too real to be a game, but he also wasn't too familiar with the concept of a computer, other than that it was a smaller TV that people could interact with to talk to each other instead of talking to each other.

When the timer reached around the 4:30 point he frowned at Otto. "I'm not the person who was going around destroying things in the first place! That's why you read things first. Were there instructions to read - what did they say?"

As he was asking this he had already taken out his cellphone, exchanging the newer model for one of the older vintage flip ones, and was dialing Mark. And waiting.

"I read stuff. I read the screen." He gestured to the now flashing screen. "Emergency Evacuation whatever. Lockdown n stuff. Something about bombs."
