Hobbies: Wanderlust - Elex's grandfather was an inventor, and his father a philanthropist (and a suspected philanderer) - thus, the Yorkes play the socialite game and such a game necessitates traveling and becoming worldly. Elex enjoys it for all the world can show him - not just the magnificent inspiration of the Himalayas, but also the street magic found in the annals of Kolkata. He enjoys exploring the pinnacles and shameful undersides of a city, but does not much care for the wide-spanning middle. Elex used to travel with great frequency, but now that he is enrolled into Azure Valley, he has to content himself with wandering through all that Destiny City has to offer.
Scrimshaw - Drawing knife over bone or shell became a hobby for him after so many tales of seafaring and long adventure. He seldom went sailing himself, but he took to scrimshaw when bored on fishing trips, or even when private tutoring grew tedious. It offers twofold relief: one side of scrimshaw allows him to work out his fantasies into an indelible final product, and the other gives the tactile soothing of busied hands. His father never allowed him to keep them, calling them servant's fancies for how one of their past maids took fascination with them, but Elex did not mind (he thought it was kind of funny). The bone was therefore resurfaced and sold or discarded.
Swimming - Swimming comes with a few great perks. For example, he could dive into a second world that men rarely know. Diving down also separates one from the dull bore of men who seek his attention, or simply want to lecture him. Swimming generates its own wonders, too - swimming in lakes or off a coast often gives glimpses into the private spheres of fish, who dart about while looking at him with equal interest. There, he cannot speak, so no words are necessary. The ocean is such a different world from that of tired men in scholarly pursuits - why don't more people go swimming?
Gossip Gossip Gossip - Elex isn't completely immune to his socialite roots. He, too, enjoys hearing rare snippets about Ms. Curnow's suspected b*****d child, or how Mr. Breckenridge skipped his last week's social arrangements due to his ongoing obsession with the latest religious fad. He wants to hear how Melinda went seeking a guru out in the highest heights of the Himalayas because to her, Orientalism is just another word for magic. People have lives, and every day they share only the flashiest tidbits about themselves. Sometimes the raunchiest. And Elex likes to hear them all, whether through eavesdropping or skimming magazines or accosting the source himself.
Virtues: Precocious -- Elex grew up quickly. While often attributed to good tutoring and careful parenting, he matured fast enough that he became a delight for his parents to debut at dinner parties. He is capable of interacting with the adult world without want of sports or social conquests or urges toward popularity as with some of his peers. He is now wise enough to glean significant comprehension out of lauded literary works, though he does not often do so, and able to give sound counsel to others with greater frequency of success than the average boy his age. While he can't see into the future, he tries his best to account for the greatest possibilities.
Attentive -- Elex loves to listen. People are what brings magic and tragedy into the world, and people are what fill the earth with beauty and meaning. Stories are oft the crux of any culture, and each person met on the street has a story to tell. While he cannot listen to all of them, and certainly has his preferences, Elex shows a great proclivity for becoming an open ear. Anyone venting to him may do so in confidence, and know that their woes do not reach farther than him.
Placid -- Many things could happen to Elex without a great show of emotion. Were he arrested by or for some childish prank, he would capitulate with little more than a bare hint of a smile (perhaps for what was done or what is yet to do). Similarly, in joyous occasions, Elex retains his cool politeness without challenge. While he can be incited to anger, such instances are exceedingly rare. If he does feel anger often, it is not expressed externally. This can lead to others finding him more trustworthy for heated issue, or considering him a more acceptable ear for heavy woes.
Flaws: Adrift -- Elex finds himself listless at a time in his life when he should be determining where he would go to college, what he would pursue, and how he would carve a name for himself to make his father proud. Elex, however, has no direction in life and appears disinterested in finding one. He wants to let the seas carry him where they want, without interference of an oar. He prefers tossing aside compass and sextant, too, and simply resigning himself to the influence of events around him. Thus, Elex appears lazy to others where he should be driven, and any attempts to convince him of a direction end in frustration.
Anomie -- Elex doesn't fit with the upper echelons of society that his parents want him to represent. The social responsibilities thrust upon him breed an empty and meaningless life. Elex has a want of a life existing outside money, social status, and recognition, whereas his surroundings expect him to strive for these attributes. His obvious lack of fitting in with the other socialites of his age and class place him in a perpetually precarious social situation where he cannot find like minds. He simply does not carry the values and ethics system they require for him to be accepted. He is, therefore, a posh outcast.
Cynical Delight -- An unsubtle car crash, a stolen purse, power abused by the latest bureaucrat - to all these scenes, he laughs. He'll clap his hands together, and speak of them frequently in very finely-laced sardonic tones. Elex isn't naïve to the corrupted workings of humanity. He laughs in the face of destruction, a subtly cynical delight, but the fine-tuned sarcasm demands such intuition to suss out that he often appears genuinely enlivened by human tragedy. Without intimate knowledge of who Elex is, he looks to be that a*****e who wants to watch the world burn. And given his standoffishness at times, this aspect of him has stopped a lot of people from getting to know him better.
